Editorial Review Product Description This study examines the state of adoption of leading-edge technologies in Canadian vertical markets and analyzes firm's perceptions of these technologies ability to create operational efficiencies. This research document provides valuable insight, prediction, and prescription for both vendors and end-users. Editorial Review Product Description Since the publication of the first edition of Technology and Society: A Canadian Perspective in 1997, awareness of the pervasive effects of new and emerging technologies on our lives is, if anything, even more pronounced. New and emerging technologies in everything from health care to communication and the Internet hold enormous promise. However, the more ominous consequences of technology are also very much with us?from environmental degradation to uncertainty in the workplace in a post "dot.com" economy to terrorism and warfare. Technology and Society, second edition, continues the rich tradition of Canadian writing on technology found in the work of Harold Innis, Marshall McLuhan, George Grant, Ursula Franklin, and others. Like the first edition, the book begins and ends with an attempt to understand Grant's insistence that technology is a "fate," connected, in the anthropological sense, with the evolution of societies. In between, the book examines the social and historical foundation for the development and diffusion of technology in the Canadian context. The first three chapters define the phenomenon of technology by classifying the vast array of tools and techniques. They offer a conceptual scheme for understanding the interrelationship between society and technology and for the diffusion of technologies. Subsequent chapters shift to looking at the consequences of technology. The linkage between technology and economic development is explored, as is the significance of a technocratic value system. The relationship between work and technology?the significance of "automation," of a "branch plant" economy, "R&D," and communication?is examined. The final chapters consider new leading technologies such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology, as well as public attitudes towards technology. |

All three major IT markets are covered (hardware, software and IT services) as well as the top line telecommunications services forecast. In addition, the key segments within the IT hardware, software and services sectors are examined in greater detail. "Given the strong economic environment in Canada, now is the time for Canadian organizations of all sizes to invest in ICT to create sustainable business advantage, safeguard against future uncertainty, and enable their growth strategies " says Vito Mabrucco, Managing Director of IDC Canada. "Companies that miss this opportunity for investment will be left behind as domestic and global competition continue to rise and even more so if the market or economic climate loses any momentum." |

Editorial Review Product Description This IDC study presents the results of IDC Canada's Canadian technology consumer segmentation. Five segments were identified based on respondent interest and investment into consumer technologies. The clusters are compared across key consumer markets, namely home telephone usage, mobile wireless phone, connectivity and Internet, and television. This document also discusses how vendors that wish to target consumers will need to adapt their customer experience strategies in response to each segment's characteristics. "Segmentation analysis can easily act as a baseline for the development of targeted sales, marketing, product development, and partner strategies when considering the different dynamics of the Canadian technology consumer," says Emily Taylor, analyst, Customer Segments. |
