Product Description
At last, the definitive guide on how to respond when someone says, "I have cancer." Two-time cancer survivor Roseanne Kalick helps readers communicate caringly with the cancer patient. Many have had the gut-wrenching experience of having a friend or loved one reveal they have cancer, yet few can figure out how to react. Using real stories, Kalick conveys how much most people really want to say and do the right thing – and how they often fail. Even those in the medical profession who work with cancer are guilty of etiquette "don'ts." The book is intended for patients, caregivers, family members, and friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly every family is touched by cancer in some way but...
There is something happening in our society, it is called "cancer's dirty little secret"; long-time friends disappear, stop calling or emailing a cancer patient, they may stop contact all together... why would this be so widespread at a time when friends and family are desperately needed not only by the cancer patient but by those trying to give- care?
Could it be fear? Fear of not knowing what to say or do?Better to avoid than to offer help or compassion.Cancer patients need help, and a lot of it.It is estimated to take 3-5 people to get a person through treatment and give care while a person struggles against this horrible disease. This books offers help to people by stating clearly what they can do; what helps and what doesn't,what hurts and what heals. Perhaps this book will encourage people to step up and help a victim of cancer without fear or anxiety that they will do or say the wrong thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cancer Etiquette
I was looking for a book that would give me some practical tips and advice on how to treat a family member with cancer and their spouse with kindness and consideration. This book offers some excellent advice from a cancer survivor.I particularly needed some advice on what to say or not say and this book does deliver.I will be referring back to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars And another thing
When a friend or loved one has cancer, do not tell anyone.

Let the patient decide who is to be told.

I had cancer and my dad told the gardener; my tenant told our mutual next-door neighbor; someone else told my ex-husband.

I thought it went without saying that medical issues are utterly private!!!

This book is necessary!

1-0 out of 5 stars informative
thought the book was very informative and at a reasonable price-service was quick. book wasnot too long or boreing--have friends who are dealing with cancer and thought this book would help--it did help on how to talk to them--thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ
THAN YOU to the author is so inadequate for such a book as this.
If there was ever a book that everyone should read this is the one.
Having had three kinds of cancer myself, I can totally relate to so much of what Rosanne Kalick has written. Her book has brought tears to my eyes and smiles on my lips.
I know in my heart that most people mean well with their comments but at the same time they come across as appearing to be brash, uncaring and sometimes downright stupid. When we are in pain, or feeling so sick from our treatments it's often times hard to smile through it all and try not to react to these comments.I know also that many times we as patients tend to over react to what others may innocently say.
This book is a great guide for all of us, both patients, family, caregivers, friends or neighbors. We can all benefit from reading this book and hopefully applying it to our lives.
I have ordered several more copies of this book to share with others.I know it will be going through my church family as well as a lot of my friends. Some are already telling me they can't wait to get their copies. ... Read more

Product Description

“I want to be brave. I want to be big. I want to be gracious and cool. I want to be the Audrey Hepburn of cancer…”

Gail Konop Baker was a runner, yoga practitioner, and lifelong subscriber to Prevention magazine. As her forty-sixth birthday approached, she looked forward to a time when she could at last take a deep breath, with one child heading off to college and the other two busy with their lives. She finally felt as if she was getting her life back.

Then, right before Valentine’s Day 2006, she heard the words that would forever change her: Just to be safe, I think we should biopsy.

It was the beginning of her year-long struggle with breast cancer and its fallout—one that would upstage any midlife crisis she’d fretted was waiting in the wings. “I want to feel bad about my neck. I do,” she writes. “But I feel bad I may not ever get to feel bad about my neck.” Gail was suddenly faced with the truth that awaits us all—this was her life, and she would do anything to hold on to it. As a doctor’s wife, she knew more than she should about her diagnosis and treatment. As a mother, she found unbearable the idea of not being there for the next birthday, next graduation, next anything. And as a woman who’d put her dreams on hold for years, she was determined to make every minute count.

But Cancer Is a Bitch is about much more than the “C” word; it's about the outrageous challenges of marriage, the joys and unpredictability of motherhood, about figuring out what it is you want to do with your life, about wanting to live now.

Funny, raw, and moving, this story will resonate with every mother and wife, and with anyone who has been affected by cancer. It is one woman’s unforgettable, beautifully told account of juggling midlife and motherhood with a rogue boob—and, ultimately, triumphing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun look at cancer
Gail Konop Baker has done two things with Cancer is a Bitch. First, written a wry and satirical look at her own journey with cancer, and second given us some truth and honesty in what it takes to balance both health, home, children, and a recalcitrant husband. At times the book and its insights seemed a bit too superficial, but in all, it was a quick fun read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read, enjoy, and listen, too, if you like
Why a memoir? And don't tell me it's because everyone's got a book in them. This, I do not want to know until everyone also has a ghost writer on hand, or has a way with words like, for instance, Gail Konop Baker.

'Cancer is a Bitch, Or I'd Rather Be Having a Midlife Crisis' is as honest a title as it is an amusing one. What started as a journaling project after a diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ morphed into a blogging endeavor and eventually yielded this terrific little documentary of one woman's wallow.Yes, wallow. But not with the negative connotation that we've all been warned off of - or warned off of admitting, at least.

Gail Baker chronicled her dizzyingly fast cycles of hope, despair, anger, frustration, and triumph in words that are both frank and funny. As a companion to someone going through a health crisis, 'Cancer is a Bitch', is a firm hand-holding and a gripe session and a hug.And if you happen to be free of the fear of your own mortality just now, it's a lesson in grace and a pleasure to read.

Gail spent a little time with me at PsychJourney dot com, talking over the spaces in between the lines of Cancer is a Bitch, Or I'd Rather Be Having a Midlife Crisis. You can learn more about Gail and her terrific blogs, The Accidental Memoirist, and The Secret Lives of Doctor's Wives, at GailKonopBaker dot com, as well.

Oh, and go get a mammogram.

5-0 out of 5 stars What woman are going through!
Gail's book is such an open and honest insight into what goes through a woman's mind when the doctor's say "This looks suspicious". I read and thoroughly enjoyed the book, about how the diagnosis of cancer can change everything in a person's like. Gail's writing is like a journal, filled with her deepest thoughts of what is like to be told "you've got cancer..."I strongly recommend reading the book and getting copies for woman who have either been recently diagnosed or have gone through breast cancer. It provides an insight as to what will happen and provide solidarity to those who have gone through it...

Cannot recommend highly enough

4-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant read.
At the age of 45, Gail Konop Baker is a mother of three with a radiologist as a husband. She practiced yoga, ran, ate organic food, and rarely became sick. Gail also hoped to start her writing career with her novel about a woman with breast cancer. Then, strangely enough, not long before Valentine's Day, Gail is diagnosed with breast cancer. This begins her struggle with marriage, children, with her oldest going to college soon, family, and of course, the cancer itself-all in a heartfelt and humorous way.

Baker's humorous tone made the novel a quick read. I also liked that, for a book that deals cancer, the novel was not sad or too self-pitying. The novel is titled as Cancer is a Bitch: Or I'd Rather be Having a Midlife Crisis, but through the novel, Baker has a midlife crisis, so the novel is not just about cancer, which was also nice. I enjoyed reading about her family and experiences. Because her husband was a doctor, Baker knew most of her doctors on a more personal level, which, I'm sure you can imagine, can be odd, especially when you're lifting up your shirt at your doctor's appointment.

The best part about this novel is that I would want to read it even if Baker did not have cancer or was going through a midlife crisis. That's how powerful of a narrator she is. She can make going to the grocery store seem interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book about cancer that won't leave you exhausted...
Although everyone's experience with cancer is different, and no one can write about it in the same way, I was able to read this author's book without feeling a cloak of heaviness push me down. Although the subject matter is not an easy one to relate, Cancer is a Bitch was written with a light and humorous hand; of course, the author doesn't disregard the emotional and physical impact of cancer, but in her telling her own tale, she doesn't allow herself, and thus the reader, to become burdened by it to the point of inertia or write with a overly-sentimental pen. There are poignant moments, and moments of clarity: this is cancer and sometimes people with cancer die...a cancer that can alter the way a woman looks physically, the way she perceives herself as a woman, the dynamics of her family changing - all these things could be darkly drawn, but the author did not bury her book in high drama....I forgot about these darker moments as I read Konop Baker's witty accounting. When I closed the book, I wondered if the author will be writing something else? ... Read more

Product Description

When Dr. E. Fuller Torrey was diagnosed with prostate cancer, none of the books he could find was current enough or comprehensive enough to satisfy his need for information. This book is for the hundreds of thousands of other men who each year receive the same frightening diagnosis. It is the book Dr. Torrey wished he had when he was facing the countless questions that a man with prostate cancer, and his family and friends, all confront.

Complete, up-to-date, and readable, the book explains how to come to terms with the diagnosis of prostate cancer, evaluate the severity of the disease, and assess the variety of treatment options and their complications. Many chapters provide information other books barely consider, such as a full discussion of the causes of prostate cancer and an evaluation of other books on the subject. Also included is a summary of the most useful Web sites.

The author mixes his personal experience with factual material, and he maintains a reassuring sense of humor. His advice is practical, with dozens of tips and lists including “Ten Steps to Sanity for Men Recently Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.” With Dr. Torrey’s book in hand, readers can now tackle all the important decisions about prostate cancer, confident in having the most accurate and complete information available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surviving Prostate Cancer
This is a very informative book, written by a Doctor who admits even he, as an MD, didn't understand everything that was happening when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

In addition to being a frank discussion of the author's concerns, questions and how he went about finding answers, this books helps to put the man diagnosed with such a cancer-and his spouse as well-at ease with a better understanding of what this cancer is and how to begin to understand the choices available in seeking a treatment suited to the patients own condition.

Included also are many clever cartoons which help to ease the stress of the recently diagnosed patient. After all, even though prostate cancer is one of the slowest growing cancers, and has a good survival rate, it is still CANCER and tends to frighten the patient.

I encourage the prospective buyer to add this to his bookshelf but strongly urge that he also check out additional books, such as "Dr. Peter Scardino's Prostate Book," to gain a thorough understanding of what Prostate Cancer is and how to arrive at an educated choice of the right treatment for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful when I needed it
I bought the Kindle edition of this book in the middle of the night after we were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. It was a great "first book" in my research, and is the right amount of information for the newly diagnosed.I followed by reading Dr. Pat Walsh's book, which is more technical, and the two together made me feel like I had enough information to consider the options appropriately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prostate Cancer Book
This is an outstanding book for anyone who worries about preventing Prostate Cancer as well as anyone who has been diagnosed with it. It is very user friendly and readable and very comprehensive in its treatment of the causes and solutions of Prostate Cancer. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars prostate cancer prevention and treatment
torrey isa good writer.Prostate cancer came upon him and this book resulted. It is balanced and hopeful. As a physician I thought it was quite accurate.
Men with prostate cancer or with first degree relatives with the disease could read this tome with benefit.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but there are better books
He has a nice mix of information, but seems to go out of his way not to mention the truly comprehensive sites on the Internet where one can get information [...links taken out...]You can check the bulletin board at pcainaz dot org.

This book does not hold a candle to A Primer on Prostate Cancer: The Empowered Patient's Guide, which is as far as I'm concerned the most comprehensive yet easy-to-read book out there, and useful for years as a reference, also.

This book is a good choice also, if you are like me and find it helpful to read several books on prostate cancer.I think it is a good idea, because the choices you make will affect the rest of your life. ... Read more

Balancing the serious work of survival with an upbeat tone, The Cancer Patient's Workbook maintains a positive outlook while avoidingpointless platitudes. As a survivor of Stage 4 lung cancer, author JoanieWillis is all too familiar with both the spiritual trials and the dailyfrustrations that cancer can bring. Her book is fundamentally pragmatic, but incorporates alternative healing, humor, and personal reflections.Divided into seven sections, the format is thoughtfully laid out withinformation broken down into easily digestible boxes. If you prefer tomaintain your privacy, the paper cover slides off to reveal calmingphotos--with no telltale title in sight.

Chapter 3, "Navigating the Medical Maze," is filled with questions foryour doctors, and includes informative glossaries of medical terms. Thequestions are broken down by type of medical provider, and cover surgeries, diagnostic tests, and personal medical history. There is plenty of spaceprovided to write the answers directly in the book, and separate pages areincluded to create a pain diary. Illustrations are provided when relevant, such as in this diary section, allowing you to color in the exact locationsof pain on a human's outline. "Nature's Pharmacy" covers alternativetherapies and dietary suggestions, and includes short quizzes, as well asnotes on substances that have been shown to be harmful. "On My Own Terms" is atough chapter, but one that allows you to get your wishes down in writingin case of death. Here, you can plan everything from your funeral serviceto particular bequests, and Willis provides poems, song lyrics, and plentyof writing space to help you through.

Providing both practical and emotional support, this workbook is like afriend who's been there, done that--and is just waiting to help. --JillLightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars just what I needed
Since my cancer diagnosis four years ago, I have been given and have bought dozens of books about coping with cancer. This book was by far the most helpful to me.It does exactly what it says it does.It keeps patients organized and informed. It helped me so much to see how other people cope with everything from treatment side effects, to making plans, to communicating needs--- everything.I would give this to anyone who has just been newly diagnosed-- or who loves someone who is newly diagnosed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for cancer recovery
This book was a huge disappointment to someone trying to take care of a cancer patient. It is, in essence, a re-hash of the familiar food pyramid guidelines that advise low-fat, low-protein and high-carbohydrate diets, organized around specific cancers. The scientific basis, if there is one, relates to epidemiologic studies of cancer risk.It might be helpful to someone who is trying to reduce their risk of various cancers by altering their dietary habits, but I doubt if this book has much more to offer than most of what has been published on that topic over the past several years. It has no scientific grounding for those who already have cancer, and may in fact suggest dietary patterns that would undermine the nutritional needs of those who are already in treatment, when fats and proteins may be friends. For someone undergoing cancer treatment, or in recovery from that ordeal, it has very little to offer that the hand-outs in your doctor's office don't already tell you.

Thanks Amy for a great resource that I have given to many people in my congregation as they battle cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have if you or someone you know just has been diagnosed with cancer
Dr. Givler has not only the knowledge of a medical doctor, she has personally gone through a diagnosis and the treatment for cancer. When I first read this book, it was as a reviewer for several magazines. I have purchased many copies now to give to people and unfortunately, know there will be more as long as we have the dreaded disease of cancer. If you are facing a diagnosis of cancer, please think about getting this book--or get one for someone you know who needs it. It is warm without sappy sentiment, practical, and like having a trusted medical friend for the journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for overwhelmed and newly diagnosed
I'm writing to tell you what comfort I received from reading your book.I read it the first time within two weeks of my husband's diagnosis and the start of chemotherapy.I have reread it again recently, and take it out when I need someone to reassure me God is in control, and to have faith.I often read sections to my husband that I feel will be of the most benefit to continue his incredibly strong belief he can beat it, no matter what the statistics say.

There is so much out there to read that I feel overwhelmed by all the information. However, very few books make you feel BETTER about this very "sucky" situation.Thank you to someone who really needed it, and appreciates it.

Epstein, M.D., backed by meticulous documentation, charges that the cancer establishment remains myopically fixated on damage control -- diagnosis and treatment, and basic genetic research with, not always benign, indifference to cancer prevention research and failure of outreach to Congress, regulatory agencies, and the public with scientific information on unwitting exposures to a wide range of avoidable causes of cancer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) are also accused of pervasive conflicts of interest, particularly with the cancer drug industry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterful documentation of life-saving truths about cancer
Could it possibly be true that: (1) Cancer is preventable? (2) Government agencies and the cancer establishment, with their false optimism, their emphasis on "damage control," and their opposition to non-toxic alternativetreatments, are doing far more harm than good in the "war on cancer"? (3)Each individual, armed with the right knowledge, can significantly reducethe chances of ever getting cancer?

Dr. Epstein fully documents thesetruths with great force and clarity. Having read the book, it would bedifficult not to believe these truths, to fully take them in, and to actaccordingly.

5-0 out of 5 stars We can stop losing the "War Against Cancer"
I can't remember when a book has cheered me the way this one has. As a longtime worker in the field of alternative cancer treatment, and one who has undergone his own battle with this disease, I rejoice that a voice ofauthority has finally stated the truth in loud, ringing tones -- theemperor has no clothes! The reiterated claim by our government and itsassociated medical professionals that we are "winning the war againstcancer" is simply not true. And these stalwarts in the Cancer Establishmentare not the selfless servants of humanity they have been portrayingthemselves as, either. Their ranks are shot through with cronyism, conflicts of interest, and subservience to the giant drug companies.

Masterfully, exhaustively, irrefutably, Dr. Epstein exposes this dirtylittle game that has been snowing the American public for the last 25years. And he makes a powerful case that, in the field of cancer as in noother, an ounce of prevention is indeed worth a pound of cure. Cancer, oncecontracted, is generally a very tough disease to treat successfully. But,in very many cases, it can be prevented by avoiding known cancer-causingagents in the environment, in the workplace, and in consumerproducts.

Not only is "THE POLITICS OF CANCER Revisited"inspiring in its revelations and recommendations. It is a magnificentreference tool, one I have put on my shelf for ready access whenever I wantto know if a particular cosmetic, food additive, drug, work setting -- orpart of the country -- is carcinogenic and therefore to be avoided.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and timely exposé of cancer politics
This book will likely change the way you see the world. Not only is the tripling of cancer rates in this century directly related to environmental and industrial conditions, but the same players also control the huge andhugely profitable cancer industry which has grown up arount it. Meanwhilepromising nontoxic alternative treatments have been excluded from theplaying field controlled by this oligopoly of self-interested players, manyof whom are supposed to be the guardians of the public health. Epsteindocuments all this impeccably, but also lets citizens know what we can doto change the system. Highest recommendation. A must-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe this is Non-fiction!
Dr. Epstein manages to prove the saying that "fiction mimics relality." Only this time the "story" is horrifyingly close to home. As Dr. Epstein outlines the mis-deeds of the Cancer Industry, onefeels as if they are reading a conspiracy novel. However, when onecontamplates the fact that this book is non-fiction, it is more chillingthan even the best conpiracy fiction. ... Read more

AN excellent book. Provides a candid and open account of survivorship. Should be read by patients, families and clinicians alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Been there, done that!
I have had close relatives with cancer and I am a cancer survivor.I wish I had this book when my father and SIL had cancer because I didn't know exactly how to help. This is the perfect book for friends and family members who want to help but don't know how.I am one of the patients often quoted in the book so I know these comments come from the heart of the survivors who wrote them.I appreciate seeing my experience from the reader's vantage point.I also enjoyed hearing about what got other people through.None of us could have done it alone.I wish there was such a book for kids and teenagers with cancer. There needs are different and I find myself wondering how to help them uniquely because I am a school nurse.I currently have a student undergoing chemo for testicular cancer. We can relate in general but he needs kids his own age to be there and to talk to.Excellent resource.I recommend it for every place of worship, library, doctor's office and as a personal resource if you love someone with cancer.

A FirstLook Feature

Book Review: What Helped Get Me Through (American Cancer Society, 2008) by Julie K. Silver, M.D.

Edited by the award winning author, Julie K. Silver, herself a breast cancer survivor, the objective of What Helped Get Me Through is to provide stories, memories, and personal histories in the form of wisdom and hope by cancer survivors to others living with cancer. Dr. Silver surveyed hundreds of cancer survivors from around the world and interviewed medical experts and cancer leaders during her research for What Helped Me Get Through.

What Helped Get Me Through offers guidance, emotional support, and advice to those just diagnosed with cancer and those undergoing treatment. Cancer survivors have been in the same situation, and speak their own words about survival, pointing out the small details to the major discussions of the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of having the disease.

What Helped Me Get Through from cover to cover:

* How to manage fear, uncertainty, and speak with your young children. (Dr. Silver had to do this herself.)
* How to explore and decide upon treatment options.
* How to take care of yourself, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.
* How to interact with your family and friends, allowing them to make a difference.
* What would have helped, but was too difficult to ask for.
* What could have helped at the time of diagnosis.

Dr. Silver also has included short lists which are invaluable:

* 5 Things You Should tell Your Partner Who Has Cancer
* 5 Things To Tell Your Children About Your Cancer
* 5 Things For a Friend To Do
* 5 Things Your Oncologist Should Tell You
* 10 Tips to Help Children and Families

A personal sample: "I was my own worst enemy, and I found myself living on the computer, looking for the worst news possible.I cured that by going to work...it really helped the depression and getting back into a normal life.--Kathie, nurse and social worker, diagnosed with kidney cancer at age 53 in 2005 in Kingston, New York."

There are many survivors who participated in What Helped Get Me Through, including famous names, that are out on the front lines supporting cancer research today. You'll recognize Lance Armstrong, Carly Simon, Scott Hamilton, Sharon Osbourne, Susan Vreeland, Elyse Caplan, retired Senator Edward W. Brooke, Lynn Eib, Hester Hill Schnipper, among many many others. Cancer knows no limits of age, race, gender, nor economic position. We are all affected, as What Helped Get Me Through testifies to.

On a personal note, I walked into the emergency room to hear my own father's diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. We needed this book then. What Helped Me Get Through will encourage many families through diagnosis and treatment, offering hope. Sometimes those days are dark, but there is always hope.

BackStory Byte: Julie K. Silver, M.D. is celebrating her fifth year of breast cancer survivorship. She is also the author ofmore than a dozen books, including: After Cancer Treatment: Heal Faster, Better, Stronger (Johns Hopkins Press), chosen by Library Journal as a top twenty health book (2006) Life After Stroke (Johns Hopkins Press),and Super Healing (Rodale).Dr. Silver has received the American Cancer Society's prestigious Lane Adams Quality of Life award(2006) because she of her dedication to cancer care survivorship.Dr. Silver is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and a practicing physiatrist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and on the medical staff at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
As a new breast cancer patient, I searched on Amazon for highly recommended books. This one was rated well and I agree with others - definitely worth buying and reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breast cancer information
I highly recommend this book to any woman who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. The author covers every subject and practically every question that one might have and answers them in a way that is not frightening or threatening, but extremely realistic. It is one of the best publications that I have on the subject in my personal library and continue to send it to anyone I know who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, no matter what stage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I bought this book just a few days before my own surgery. I was thinking I wouldnt have enough time to read it. However I found this book extremely helpful. It is set up as question-- the answer, question-- the answer. Wish I would have had it the day I was diagnosed. This is the best book I have found with real, strait forward answers.
I have referred to it several times and know since my battle is not over, I will still be reading it.
Thank You to the authors!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
More comprehensive than other options available.Very direct and to the point in answering touch questions.
Highly recommend it for all breast cancer survivors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Resource
I am currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer and was fortunate to have a friend who is a nurse oncologist who, when I contacted her to share my diagnosis, strongly recommended Dr. Chan's book.It has been 6 months since my diagnosis and I have read, re-read, tabbed and highlighted his book and as I am still fighting the fight, Dr. Chan's book continues to be the most important, comprehensive resource and reference for me in my "cancer library".The experience of reading his book is as if you are sitting in his office and you have unlimited time to blurt out all the questions that initially race through your mind when first diagnosed and the answers are all there for you. Then, as the initial fog that shrouds your mind when you first hear the words "breast cancer" dissipates and you become immersed in the new breast cancer lexicon, I have turned back to Dr. Chan's book to gain a better understanding of my disease and the treatments that have been presented. Further, this invaluable resource has helped my husband and I to organize and narrow the focus of what questions to prepare ourselves with for the many visits to the medical and surgical oncologists and reconstructive plastic surgeon.I cannot recommend this book enough-it speaks directly to patients of this awful disease in "layman's terms", and arms you with the information you need not only about the disease, but also who are the professionals you need to form your team to fight the disease. ... This is a professionally written book, with lots of detailed info and references. It's not a very easy read for the layman, but if you're really interested in the subject, as a patient or a helper, this will cover most of your needs and questions. Some times it goes into more detail than I would need, but I just skip what I consider too much for my brain. Many thanks to the authors for such a comprehensive non-medical text.

I think this is a great book, now we just need a book on finances and how to plan for lifes events like college, buying a home, and retirement planning.

5-0 out of 5 stars 18 Year Survivor and Counting!!!
I am an 18 year survivor of Osteoganic Sarcoma and I found this book to be one of the best and informative books I've ever read. I read things that I didn't even know about my disease or the long term late effects due to the chemotherapy I received. I will admit, at times it was TOO much information, but it was all factual and there were things that I read that I had to come to term with. I have an appointment at a Late Effects Clinic in a few weeks, and I am eager to get on with the rest of my life. A big Thank You to the authors who took so much time doing research and putting their own blood, sweat and tears into such an awesome project!!! Sincerely, Diane Trautman Smith

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Resource for Survivors!
This book is what every survivor, their parent(s) and thier doctor needs! It is comprehensive and well laid out...I love how I can easily find information on areas of concern I have regarding my son's survival. It has come in handy during follow up appointments to ensure my son is receiving the proper long term care. There is a compact card in the back of the book where all information about the child's treatment can be recorded so the child will have easy to access, concise information regarding their surgeries, chemotherapy drugs, radiation amount and type, etc. I know this will be an indispensible tool for my son as he grows up. I applaud the authors for writing a much-needed book. This book is a MUST-HAVE for EVERY childhood cancer survivor!

4-0 out of 5 stars An encouraging read...
I've been reading lots of books about cancer since a friend of mine was recently diagnosed with bone and, a few months later, liver metastasis from a previous breast cancer.

Overall, I found this to be a very encouraging read. I enjoyed the author's journal entries more than any of the particular tips. I particularly liked Chapter 7 which talks about how cancer changes a person's perspective on life.

The author had young children to care for when she was going through her cancer experience, so many of the tips suggested are specific to helping with childcare and such. I wasn't able to get much help from this since my friend has one grown child and is waiting for grandkids.

The book is a short and easy read. While the author does talk about her faith in God and quotes a few encouraging verses here and there, I disagree with the previous reviewer who thought you might not be able to relate to it if you aren't a Christian. I didn't find the book to be at all preachy, and the heartwarming way in which the author talks about her own experience is pretty universal and I doubt many people (if any) would find anything in her book offensive.

1-0 out of 5 stars a bit heavy on the christianity
The book has some practical(although somewhat obvious) advice. However, much of the book is dominated by references to God, Jesus Christ, to praying, to things like making a poster of a scripture saying etc.If you are not a Christian, you may not relate to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging
I found this book full of ideas to help a friend or family member going through the trauma of cancer. The author gives her personal experience with exherts from her diary and relates how she was helped during hercancer treatment. I also liked the way Pamela related her helpfulsuggestions in a practical way, stating what to do and what not to doduring different stages of cancer treatment and recovery. It certainly gaveme a better understanding of the cancer patient and how I may be able tohelp.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational, informative and resourceful book.
Facing Cancer Together is a wonderful little book that is inpiring to read.At one time or another, all of us will be affected by cancer, either personally or through family or friends. The author gives personalexamples of her own struggles and triumphs. She also incorporatesinspirational quotes and scriptures throughout the book.

The author did awonderful job of providing information on how one can help a friend orloved one during their ordeal with cancer. She talks about what to do andwhat not to do when trying to support and encourage someone facingcancer.

Pam Brown shares resources that were helpful to her during herbattle and recovery.Such as; support groups, internet access, books, andmedical guides.

I really enjoyed the book and actually read it in onesitting.I have even purchased a couple extra copies to give to friendsand family.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and insightful guide.
I wish I had this book 4 years ago.At that time my friend was diagnosed with cancer and 2 years later, my mother was diagnosed as well.Having never experienced the awful emotions cancer delivers, I had no idea what Icould do to support both of the people I dearly loved.Sadly, most of whatI thought was the right thing to do or say, wasn't at all what could havebeen really helpful.I think unless you've been there, you have no ideawhat cancer does to you and what you need from others to get through it.This book is an instruction guide with vignettes of the frightful battleMs. Brown lived.Had I read it 4 years ago, my support certainly wouldhave provided my mother and my friend with more emotional comfort andpractical care.Unfortunately, with the prevalence of cancer today,"Facing Cancer Together..." is a reference book everyone shouldhave. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helping with Humor
I loved Jami's book! After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 I was overwhelmed with all the information out there - most of which was pretty depressing and scary. While Jami discusses the hard truths about chemo and radiation (I've yet to experience them), she does it was great humor so that the information is much easier to absorb. She has very helpful tips and really gets to the heart of the matter. I would highly recommend purchasing her book. I really identified with Jami's approach. I am a Life Coach going through this journey myself and am also trying to bring a little levity to a very difficult situation. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish this book had beenpublished 2-3 years sooner
Jami's book was published AFTER I needed it. I read it a few years after my breast cancer diagnosis. It would have been very helpful to me in the months right after diagnosis, that are so terrifying. It is a lifesaving, life-enhancing read.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT for the newly diagnosed patient!
Jami Bernard provides the reader with humor and personal experience throughout her cancer treatment journey in this book.As a recently diagnosed patient, I wanted to learn more about my new unchosen journey.Jami detailed what to expect during every step of the treatment process and provided helpful hints for dealing with not only the physical but the mental side effects from the initial diagnosis to surgery to treatment.I have read many books since my diagnosis and found this book to be the most helpful and insightful.Thank you Jami!

5-0 out of 5 stars A sense of humor goes a long way
The author manages to provide valuable information, but with some great entertainment. It's hard to imagine that a book on this topic could be funny, but her outstanding wit had me laughing out loud. When you're diagnosed with breast cancer, you find yourself bombarded with information from all sources and it can get overwhelming, and sometimes depressing. This book really helps you to learn everything about the condition, but helps keep your spirits up in the process. If you hve a sense of humor you'll love it.Outstanding!I'd love to meet the author. ...
