5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Career Management Manual
I met Susan Strayer shortly after JibberJobber was created, in 2006. Susan was working on a book called The Right Job, Right Now and felt that JibberJobber might be a perfect complement to her book. In fact, she started to talk about JibberJobber as she marketed her book, in fliers and presentations. It was pretty flattering that someone of her stature was talking about JibberJobber, and I was gratified that she felt it complemented her stuff (which was one of my original goals - to complement career offerings).

I got a copy of The Right Job, Right Now and have been thumbing through it for quite some time. I really like what she's put together, but it has taken me longer than I expected to make progress with the book. I initially approached it as I have most other books, with the intention of reading it quickly, from beginning to start.

That was the problem... this can be a "beginning to start" book, but I find it's more like a career management user's manual than anything else. While it's subtitled "The complete tool-kit for finding your perfect career," it is more than that. Let me break it down to show why it's more than just "finding your perfect career."

Part I has five chapters, and is named "What Do You Really Want To Do? A Career Plan for the Rest of Your Life." This is where she walks you through various exercises to help you come up with your "sweet spot," helping you figure out exactly what you want to be when you grow up. I like her approach more than tests that I've seen where they say "you'd be a good mortician. Or software sales rep... either one would suit you fine!"

In these first few chapters Susan Strayer walks us through the "Kaleidoscope Career Model" where we actually figure out what our perfect job would be. What is my risk level? What kind of hours will make me happiest (and most productive)? How do I value benefits, salary, security, etc? During these chapters, and with the concept of the kaleidoscope, we can find that sweet spot, which she argues is where we really need to end up.

I can't argue with that.

Part II is named "Career Action: Getting It In Gear." This is where she breaks down the job search process, including networking, resumes, personal branding, etc. The last two chapters of Part II (which has seven chapters) are Closing the Deal (chapter 11) and Taking and Making the Job (chapter 12).

I think this is where most job search books end, right? After you find the job?

Susan Strayer put in a Part III, which is what you do after you land the job... very cool. There are six chapters in Part III: Managing Your Career: Staying Challenged, Sane, and Motivated. Here are three very cool chapters:

* Chapter 16: Making the Grade is about employee reviews/evaluations. Susan has significant HR experience, and learning about how to make the most of a review is pretty cool (most of my reviews where a joke).
* Chapter 17: Playing the Political Game is self explanatory... again, her HR (and recruiting) experience provides a great perspective on how to deal with office politics.
* Chapter 18: The Fond Farewell. Maybe I don't read enough, but I can't remember another book that talks about how to get out. Brilliant. In business, a purpose of contracts is to figure out how all parties can walk away from a deal. How come we don't read more about how to walk away from an employer the right way, with regard to our career? What a cool ending to this career management manual.

This book is not a lite read... but it is a great insight into career management from someone who has experience as an HR professional, a recruiter, and of course a job seeker. Do yourself a favor and spend the $10 to $16 on Amazon... I bet you'll find yourself referring back to this book over the years!

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute buy
You have to buy this book ! Firstly because it sets your head straight into search of job and has got the right attitude to writing a proper CV. Loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked Great for Me, and will for you too!
While I was in business school a close friend of mine gave me this book. From the beginning, the book gave me the one thing that I needed (and didn't know I needed)... direction! The author's model takes you step by step through the questions you need to be asking yourself, and the result is an easy to use methodology for filtering any job you may be looking at.What this did for me was place me in a job that was a perfect fit, at the right salary, and even prepared me for the interviews because I know what questions I needed to be asking.

I know that as I look at my career going forward, I can not only use the model for new career changes, but also jobs that I may be applying for within my company.

In short, this book should be part of every career decision you make.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for strategic career management!
The Right Job Right Now is jam-packed with practical tips and tools that are relevant for first-time job seekers and seasoned executives alike.Susan's vast experience as an HR professional, both inside organizations and as an external advisor, has given her a wealth of insight about the hiring process which she freely shares in the most comprehensive career management book I have seen to date.

I use this book with clients and regularly recommend it to friends because it is the only book that I know of that addresses the finely nuanced interplay between personal values, skills, work behaviors, organizational characteristics, rewards and long term career strategy in a systematic framework (Kaleidoscope Career Model). After laying out components of the model, Susan provides a step-by-step process for activating the insights and information at every stage of the search process.Whether you're starting a new job search, thinking about strategic career progression within your current organization, or looking to make a complete career change, this is an invaluable tool.

2-0 out of 5 stars A few useful tips (10%) padded with endless "resume-speak" stories
This book will be most useful to people new to the job market, to give them illustration upon illustration upon illustration that it's ok and even desirable to tell pithy stories as they represent themselves during the hiring process.

I've been at this for a while, but I did find the section on story structures useful, though overlong. In particular, tying the moral of the story - the lesson learned - to future action can be very powerful.

But there are too many stories, and too little analysis and structure, and too many of them are couched in a way that would make me either wince or guffaw if I were the hiring manager. E.g. "At the very instant I read your ad for a Merchandising Specialist, everything clicked. The description of the job became one with my passion, and I knew the match between me and this job was perfect." Please.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never Delivered Bad Service
I never received this item and it's been a complete hassle trying to find out what happened.Needless to say, my interview was weeks ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information, advice, stories for job seekers
"So, tell me about yourself?"

Is that not the most obvious interview question? The one that every job seeker should anticipate and prepare to answer? Unfortunately, it may seem so obvious, many don't spend the time they should focusing on how to answer it.

In fact, most aspects of the job search rely on being able to tell your own story.

Networking (the all important elevator pitch)
Your resume - connecting your accomplishments with the employer's needs
Cover letter - another opportunity to sell your skills to a targeted employer
Portfolios - online opportunities to connect with people
Interviews - sealing the deal
On the job - to connect and advance
I highly recommend that job seekers take a look at Katharine Hansen's new book, Tell Me About Yourself: Storytelling to Get Jobs and Propel Your Career.

Her book is organized into several sections:

Part I - Career propelling story basics
Part II - Using storytelling in your job search
Part III - Continuous storytelling
Katharine explains how stories can help you get a job by demonstrating your personality, helping to make you memorable and establishing trust. People who know how to tell good stories can communicate their value proposition, which is key for job seekers and careerists.

This book helps you with every aspect of telling your story - from figuring out what the story should be through tips for how to recall stories stored in your brain! (For example, give your stories names.) It is full of samples of stories and many, many ideas that are critically useful for job seekers and all professionals.

If you're engaged in a job search - or maybe you should be - don't miss this great resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good book, despite the poor title
This book was surprisingly fun to read, mainly because it's full of true employee stories, which are always interesting. I think the book would have been more appropriately titled if it had something--anything--in the title about interviewing. Really, this book is about how to interview successfully and make yourself really memorable.

The book also has numerous examples of successful resumes, cover letters, bios, and other correspondence to help "sell" yourself to a prospective employer.

Here's my take:

1. The book is an excellent book on interviewing, and also how prospective employees should present/introduce themselves to employers

2. The book is more suited to people who are trying to obtain a management, supervisory, or white-collar job. The author already assumes that you know the basics, (like, don't show up in jeans and flip-flops).She assumes that you have some skills and education, so this isn't a book for someone trying to get a job waiting tables. It's geared towards working professionals.

3. The book's best points are the cover letter tips & examples, as well as the story examples, of which there are many. She also goes over how to handle a termination with dignity so you don't burn any bridges.

Overall, I think this is an excellent guide, especially for the price, which is quite reasonable for the material provided and the page count. I felt that the title was a poor choice, and maybe even a little misleading, but I don't feel that's enough of a reason to give this book less than 5 stars, considering the quality of the material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for job seekers
In her new book Tell Me About Yourself, Katharine Hansen provides actionable advice for incorporating storytelling in cover letters, resumes, job interviews, and conversations with the boss. As someone who is on the hiring end of the equation, I can vouch for the effectiveness of strategic storytelling (see my posts, What I look for in resumes and What I look for in cover letters).

Katharine, who writes my favorite blog on applied storytelling, interviewed job seekers and studied reams of resumes while earning her doctorate. She supplies step-by-step story construction tips and illustrates her points with actual resumes and cover letters gathered in her research.

She clearly did an exhaustive literature search to gather a wide range of expert opinion on the subject. My only criticism is that Katharine could have synthesized the academic literature a bit more and taken a few risks by providing her own opinion.

Katherine puts the issue well for all of us, whether we are in the job market or are building our careers where we are: We should carefully nurture our own personal brand. And we know the best brands are those that evoke intrigue and emotion through the story that they tell.

Product Description
Health Care Job Explosion offers a distinct advantage over other books of this type. It is two books in one — a comprehensive CAREER GUIDE plus a dynamic JOB FINDER. First, it provides a detailed description of each of the major health care career fields. Second, comprehensive resources are listed for job announcements (publications with job ads, job hotlines, Internet sites for job seekers, and job fairs), placement services, directories, and general information (associations, career-oriented web sites, and job related books). This dual format permits comparisons between specialties and offers insight into qualifications, cross-training potential, and pay. The job descriptions list occupations with similar skill and training requirements.

Later chapters explore the following occupation groups:Health Technologists

Health Technicians

Dietetics, Pharmacy, and Therapy

Nursing

Health and Social Services

Health Diagnosing and Assistants

Home Health Care and Computers

The job descriptions offer the most up-to-date information available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2006–2007 Occupational Outlook Handbook, interspersed with succinct input provided from many health care professionals and organizations. Each occupational listing covers the nature of the work, working conditions, employment statistics, training, other qualifications, advancement, job outlook, earnings, and related occupations. Following each job description is a carefully selected list of invaluable career and job resources. The all new fourth edition covers all major occupational groups and includes a comprehensive chapter on home health care, over 1400 updated resources, expanded sections, and interviews with health care workers. Our web site at healthcarejobs.org was created exclusively for this title.

VARIETY AND GROWTH CHARACTERIZE THE FIELD

The opportunities aren't limited to traditional health care occupations. Health care institutions will need thousands of additional accountants, auditors, personnel specialists, directors of personnel, attorneys, buyers, computer programmers, researchers, computer support specialists, chemists, engineers, drafters, computer operators, Photographers, file clerks, secretaries, purchasing clerks, and food service helpers. Furthermore, employment growth is not limited to the traditional full-time job. Part time employment is on the increase as well.

The increased demand for health care services, fed by the growing proportion of elderly in the population, is expected to continue for a full 50 years! According to the Administration on Aging the number of Americans over age 65 is expected to grow to 40.2 million by 2010 and to 71.5 million by 2030. Older Americans spend more than twice that of all others on medical services. The health care needs of this population will contribute greatly to the creation of new jobs.

Thirteen of the 20 occupations with the fastest projected growth rate are in health care. (See Table 1-1 in the book.) The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the private hospital industry is expected to employ nearly 5 million people by 2014, which will make it the seventh largest source of employment growth. Employment in doctor's offices and clinics will also increase and the BLS expects a 56% increase in home health aides. Health care manpower shortages are now commonplace and many health care providers take months to locate qualified personnel. An American Hospital Association survey found that the health care workforce is shrinking while demand for hospital care rose in 2004.

It is not just traditional medical jobs that are growing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the seven remaining 20 fastest-growing occupations, five are in computers (an industry with increasing importance in medicine) while two are medical related: medical scientists and forensic science technicians. ... But I new it needed to be something that paid decent and would give me job security. So I bought this book, read about the different fields and then handed it over to my teenage daughter to get her thinking about her future....This book guided me in the right direction and now I am in school and will graduate in early 2008. I will have job security and a decent salary until I retire. If you are interested in the medical field then this book is a great guide in helping you decide what you would like to do and how much education you need, where to go to school and what exams you must pass.Great book for those looking for a career change or just thinking of trying something else in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive career guide and a job locator for health care jobs
The new fourth edition of "Health Care Job Explosion!: High Growth Health Care Careers and Job Locator" is a brand new comprehensive career guide and a job locator for health care jobs. Health career data can be accessed at multiple internet sites, with one created especially for this book (http://healthcarejobs.org). The book is very user-friendly and is conveniently organized into 10 chapters. The first, "the Health Care Explosion," is an overview, while the second, "the Nexus - Making a Connection," is helpful to increase chances of obtaining the desired job. Chapter three, "Job Sources for Everyone," is an invaluable key to many resources, including job advertising services, job fairs, job hotlines, internet sites, associations and directories. It even includes pages on the Internet, Surfing lessons, LIST SERVERS, search engines, and education and career resources. A handy system of symbols connects the reader to the desired resource. Chapters four through ten cover general health care job areas, from health technologists and technicians to dietetics, pharmacy, therapy, nursing, health and social services, health diagnosing occupations and assistants, and home health care jobs. Each of these chapters begins with an interview with a practicing health care worker in the listed field. Job descriptions include significant points, a description of the nature of the work, working conditions, training, qualifications and advancement, job outlook, earnings, and related occupations. This is followed by an exhaustive listing of additional special resources pertaining to that occupation/area, again using the helpful icons established in chapter 3. Finally, Appendices A and B present information about health care corporations and sources for tuition and scholarships for specialized health care job training. "Health Care Job Explosion!" is an updated resource that will serve all who seek to build a career in one of the many areas related to health care in the United States. It would be a valued addition to the shelves of libraries and education institutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource!
You can't find a better book for the healthcare industry. A must for anyone looking to land that first job or a better one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very important and interesting book for your carrer!
I've been reading this book since I bought and I'm discovering that this book brought me the necessaries tools for the important decisions on my profession carrer. I would recommend for you that is looking for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have: Knock'em Dead
One of the best handbook that anyone can come across. My mentor passed me the 2006 version (when it won the award) and it has helped me with my approach towards employer in a more strategic way. This is "the book" for U.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get a job-search edge in these tough times
There are so many job search guides and techniques and this one stands OUT among that overwhelming crowd. The book is really good at making the reader feel excited and confident about their newfound knowledge which is great for job seekers in these tough and uncertain times. The interviewing techniques are some of the most valuable I've come across. Being prepared for the aggressive interviewer is invaluable. I also found that by coupling this book with Meagan Holub's The Magic Touch: How to make $100,000 per year as a massage Therapist that I was much more prepared go out and get work. Megan's book emphasizes points on how to really build the clientele you want and how to take the jobs that are really going to support your overall goals and growth. She even talks about the ever important dressing for success and advertising! Together I found these books made me feel unstoppable! Better gig, more pay, greater rewards HERE I COME!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This purchase was not planned. When I received it and started reading, it was very educational in the ways of searching for a job. I am keeping this book based on the well written information. It arrived in excellent condition and very quickly.I am very satisfied with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Difference Maker
I found `Knock `em Dead - 2010' to be well written and well organized. The concepts are very good and easy to understand.I recommend reading the book all the way through, but one can also use it as reference material to focus on specific aspects of the job search.

I found the difficult question section especially useful. That chapter provides great insight into what an interviewer is actually looking for when asking some of those dreaded questions like; "What is your greatest weakness?"Going in armed with this knowledge gives the interviewee the confidence to relax and be natural.I am convinced this is was the key to my most very recent successful search.

I consider this book to be a must have, not only for someone in the process of the job search, but also for anyone who is currently employed and interested in furthering their career within their current organization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Guide to the Outside World
This book was the best book I've ever read. Having based the whole research on questionnaires filled in by foreigners living in other countries, and by being nomads themselves, the authors have very successfully helped others who don't work in their own countries. I believe working and living in a country where you don't live must've extremely difficult, and having to put up with the stress of not being used to the currency or not knowing the language etc. must be equally frustrating. If I ever do live and work abroad I will have this book at my side to guide me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live & Work Abroad: A Guide for Modern Nomads
This book, aptly listed as a guide for modern nomads, is a must-read for anyone going on or living through an expatriate assignment.During my years in International Human Resources I think I read every book written about the expat experience, looking for the one that I could recommend to our staff.I'm pleased to say that this book satisfies my craving, and after twenty-five years, I can stop my quest.

The book covers everything from definitions of words associated with expat assignments to detailed information on how to address various aspects of expat life. The book is presented in easy to read language. At the end of each major segment it lists additional resources on the topic, typically both print and Internet, so may continue to research a topic of particular interest.

The book can is a boon to all expats, from those moving under the auspices of a company that provides assistance in shipping household goods to those who are making all the arrangements on their own. There are some brilliant checklists that guide you through various decision-makings processed such as what to move and how to select a pre-school. Although I read this book over a three-day period, it's best used as a tool that you refer to as you face expat situations. If you only pack one book in your carry-on luggage, this should be it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Expat's Best Friend
Live & Work Abroad is a must have for any person who is currently living abroad, thinking of living abroad or in the process of moving abroad. Simply a MUST HAVE.Our family uses it as a complete reference guide with up-to-date, practical information. As a Modern Nomad I appreciate a complete book that covers so much. It's a first-timers MUST HAVE and an experienced expat's best friend.Buy one for yourself and keep on extra on hand for friends. If you lend your copy out, put your name in big letters, or you might not get it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live & Work Abroad : A Guide for Modern Nomads
Live & Work Abroad : A Guide for Modern Nomads is THE single MUST HAVE book for anyone who plans to live or work abroad.Callan and Francis have put together a compendium of ESSENTIAL information and they tell it like it is. Their own extensive experiences in living and working abroad are very evident, even in terms of what they include. Things like how to ship your belongings to your new address; what problems you might encounter in doing so; and what to do about those challenges. This is the kind of tone that informs the whole book -- a down to earth, problem solving, "let's get on with it and deal with the daily things so that we can enjoy the rest of what living aborad has to offer." The book is _filled_ with invaluable contact information and questions that people may think no one has written about-- from dealing with medical problems like severe food allergies to tips for gay/lesbian travellers. These folks really have the goods! The only drawback is that the pages are really jam-packed with smallish font: but, that keeps the book itself back-pack size. Definitely a MUST HAVE... for travellers, and also their possibly skitterish parents! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book got me unstuck!

"Career changing has seemed like such a scary step for me. I love that this
author tackles it head on...'You're going to be afraid, and that's
normal!' Her upbeat, encouraging writing style makes the process seem much
more doable to me. After YEARS of thinking about a career change, I've
finally started taking action on a few of the career experiment exercises
she recommends...and they're fun. I truly believe I can make a career
change this time. I love this book!"

1-0 out of 5 stars A Book I would NOT recommend to a Career Changer
I recently bought this book, "Career Coward's Guide to Changing Careers" (CCGCC), along with "What Color is Your Parachute" and "Do What You Are."The latter two were quite helpful; unfortunately, CCGCC was not. (And I have read numerous career-related books in the past several years.)I will discuss CCGCC and then the other two books.

I guess the title of CCGCC should have warned me, as books such as "The Idiot's Guide to [Whatever]" and "[Whatever] for Dummies" were never my cup of tea.I tried, however, several times, to give CCGCC a chance, to see if maybe there was something worthwhile in this book to merit suffering through to the end. There was not. Some of the problems: (1) the author's juvenile, cheerleaderish attitude--I really couldn't stand it, page after page (her writing style seems geared more towards teenage girls than adult career changers); (2) her giddy overuse of exclamation points (if the writing is effective, exclamation points aren't necessary--this seems to be a cheap trick that lazy writers use to try to be more "expressive," or in this case, "motivational"); and (3) her condescending tone ( she never seemed to tire of using "coward," again and again).I kept thinking, "Can you give it a rest?"In short, this book just didn't work for me--a guy who is looking for a well-written, well-researched, and useful book to help me change careers.Simple.There are much better career change books out there.I will now turn to two of these.

I have read several past editions of "What Color is Your Parachute," and as always, I found the 2008 edition quite helpful.Briefly, "Parachute" helps the reader determine: (1) what their favorite transferable skills are, (2) where they might best use these skills, and (3) how to go about finding their dream job.I had to spend a good bit of time reflecting and writing about myself in order to complete the exercises in the book, but it was time well spent.(There really are no short-cuts when planning a career change.)Doing these exercises gave me a clearer idea of the types of job I should pursue, by (a) confirming what I hadsuspected about my favorite skills, interests, etc.--this was reassuring, as it made me more confident that I was on the right path, and (2) making me consider other career options that I had not previously thought of. I could have done without the author's occasional use of "God," "His Plan," etc., but since he doesn't overdo it, it wasn't a big deal.

"Do What You Are," is a book to help one discover their "type."There are free online sites that can help one do this (and my results were the same for both--the book and the online site); but as the book required me to think more (instead of just choosing between two choices, as many online inventories do), I felt more confident with my results. These writers also seem to be exclamation point-happy, but overall, the book is well-written and I fould it quite useful.

But if I had to recommend only one career change book to buy, it would be "What Color is Your Parachute."This could be supplemented by doing the inventories on free online sites to discover one's Type, as well as Interests, Values, Skills, etc.

Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be ready to work!
Really enjoyed the author's enthusiasm and insight. She knows her stuff! Activities are very helpful. Worth the money! Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read Blueprint for Changing Careers
Making a career change can feel traumatic. So many fears and doubts can get in the way.How do you start? How do you decide what career to pursue? Is it really possible? The Career Coward's Guide to Changing Careers answers all of these questions and more.

There are 3 reasons I recommend purchasing this book if you are even contemplating a career change:

(1) This book gets to the heart of what stops you from making a career change--your fear. Each chapter contains a golden nugget called "The Panic Point!" that identifies the specific fears career changers have and more importantly, shows you how to overcome them.

(2) This book isn't theory; it's fact.Katy has worked with hundreds of career changers. In fact, as I was reading this book, I was thinking, "Boy, a lot of what she describes mirrors how I made my own career change."(I'm a former practicing lawyer-turned-career coach for lawyers.)From brainstorming exciting career possibilities to deciding which career is for you to re-crafting your resume, this book covers it all from A-Z.

(3) It's easy to get bogged down in career books. Not this one. It's clear, concise, and fun to read.It is indeed a step-by-step guide.

Beware: If you're just interested in complaining about how your career makes you miserable, don't read this book.Because if you do and you do the exercises, you may find yourself transitioning to a career you love!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
As a recent high school graduate, I felt I was having a small mid-life
crisis.I knew vaguely what I wanted to do with my life, I suppose:I knew I wanted to help people who really needed it.However, I had no idea what my job would actually entail, or how to go about getting my foot in the door. The more I tried to research my options, the more I realized that the career I want is one that is not discussed to any great extent, let alone one that is the focus of great self-help books. The books that I could find were difficult to read, and weren't really aimed at people like me who are just beginning the job hunting game. And then, luckily, I flipped through Shelly Cryer's book "The Nonprofit Career Guide:How to land a job that makes a difference".This book was different from the others I'd read in that it seemed to be geared towards a less knowledgeable audience-students like myself who know they want to help people on a personal level, but don't know much more than that. The "Career Guide" was easy for me to read and follow, but still gave valuable information. Most of my general questions about working in the non-profit sector were addressed in the very first chapter of the book.Even a question that I felt a little guilty even considering; namely, "Yes, it's great that I want to be a part of this sector, but how will I earn money to support myself in the process?".After my basic questions were cleared up,I felt free to flip around the rest of the guide and consult the chapters that I felt were most relevant to me.My favorite features of the book were the 19 profiles of actual people who work in the non-profit sector. It was really nice to read about someone who is actually doing what I want to do with my life. The interviews don't feel stiff, and I had my more specific questions answered on what felt like a more personal basis.Questions like, "What do you know now that you wish you had known?", "What do you look for when hiring a new employee?", and "Describe a workday" made the interviews extremely helpful to read. The profiles also highlight the career and educational paths followed by the individuals, which is incredible information to know if you're wanting to follow in their footsteps.
After reading "The Nonprofit Career Guide" by Shelly Cryer, I feel prepared for, rather than intimidated by my career of choice. Not only do I know what I need to do to get there, I know what I'll be doing once I'm working and how to make sure I succeed when I land my dream job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and Comprehensive
The author breaks down each possible career path within the nonprofit sector, explores each career, and offers advice for obtaining each job.

The jobs go from the bottom rung all the way up to executive positions. This book is thorough and is a must have for anyone new to the nonprofit world who wants to be informed and has a desire to advance.

Great Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Students and Recent Graduates!
The nonprofit career guidebook was an easy to read manual and would be helpful for any student or recent graduate who is interested in exploring the nonprofit sector. The guidebook did a great job of providing a general overview of the types of nonprofits, included details about the various positions that exist in the organizations and testimonials/advice from professionals who have worked/work in the nonprofit field. The book made me realize how a variety of my interests and skills can easily be used in the nonprofit field and also gave me great tips to use when applying or interviewing for a job.
I definitely recommend this book, especially because even after a full read, I still use it for a quick reference when I am applying to jobs or wondering what a specific position entails.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Guide to Careers in the Nonprofit Sector
The Nonprofit Career Guide: How to Land a Job That Makes a Difference

For anyone interested in learning about or pursuing a career in a nonprofit organization this is a must reading. The book is clearly written and provides a wealth of information about the nonprofit sector. Most people would be surprised to learn about the wide variety of fields that nonprofits serve -- from the traditional role of providing services to the underserved to developing affordable housing for the poor and groups with special needs to the Arts and Cultural Affairs to health care organizations and organizations involved in promoting social entrepreneurship. A nonprofit organization may be a one person effort to help their community or a mega corporation like the United Way or the College Board.

This guide is useful for college students who are exploring career choices and for more seasoned professionals who may be considering a career change. It is also useful for individuals who want to remain active after their primary career is over and "give back" through service and are looking to learn more about the nonprofit sector.

The book reminds us of the importance of service and serving others. It highlights how important mission and purpose of organizations that make up the nonprofit sector in the US.

I will be using it as part of my course on nonprofit management for undergraduates to help them gaining a deep understanding of the organizations they will work at while completing a 150 hour field work requirement.

At $16.50 this book is a great bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must have Career Guide Reference
Shelly Cryer has compiled a useful tool for college students who are examining their options following graduation. The Non-Profit Career Guide - how to land a job that makes a difference, serves as a nuts and bolts directory that can prove useful for entry into the world of Not for Profit organizations. This manual is laid out logically and is easy to use. The appendix and endnotes are of particular help to first-time job-seekers or even those making a career change.A must have for your Career Guide Reference Collection!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
What I like about this book is that it gives a ton of careers at the end and explains what the work will be like and other necessary information, like salary and whether promotions are likely. However, if you are looking for exact careers based upon your personality type, this book is more a general overview of what would be good based on whether you're conventional, realistic, artistic, ect. For people who have absolutely no idea what career they might enjoy, buy this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hype
I found this book to be too technical, too much information that really does not help a job seeker drill down a new or existing career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful to highschoolers!
I have a nephew who is at a loss as to what career path to take...I gave this book to him and he spent the entire holiday week off from school reading this. Its chocked with information that relates to one's personality and what career fits with your talents. It points out a surprising number of sub fields one could consider, which I think fascinated my nephew.
This is a worthwhile book to give teenagers. IT explores the personality, likes and dislikes of certain fields, and actually spikes the teen's imagination and curiosity about different career fields one may not be familiar with.

This is an excellent resource for counselors, consultants, and teachers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another disappointing job search book
I have long been hoping to find the ONE career book that will point me in the write direction of finding the career that I want out of life.I'm coming to believe that these books are mostly a waste of money.

This book contains a personality test that is not unlike any other career assessment test that you can take online, for FREE.It then contains a boat load of charts...50 highest paying jobs for this personality type....50 jobs for this personality type with the highest amount of women/men employed...ect ect.If this sort of thing interests you then by all means this book might be for you.

Most of the book however is a list of different jobs for the different personality types that contains descriptions, experience/education needed, related job, ect but it is all on a VERY BASIC level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of Great Info for the Food Obsessed
I can't be objective about this book because I have adored Irena since I heard her speak at an International Association of Culinary Professionals annual conference years ago. She was hilarious and wise, and I vowed to get to know her.

I have, and now we are friends. I was a guest speaker at her class last year, and she published an excerpt from my book, Will Write for Food, in Food Jobs. So of course I think this book is good reading, practical, and jammed with good ideas and insights.

Coming from a culinary school perspective, Irena begins with jobs in restaurants in food service, then covers retail jobs, art and design. There's a big chapter on media, where you'll find out how people became culinary historians, recipe developers, recipe contest winners, food radio hosts and media trainers, culinary copywriters and television producers. The book moves on to jobs in promotion and publicity, history and culture, science and technology and farming. Throughout are sidebars of advice by luminaries such as Nach Waxman, proprietor of Kitchen Arts & Letters bookstore in New York, and author Betty Fussell. At the end, Irena advocates getting an education, and lists culinary schools, scholarships, and teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone looking for a culinary career...
This is a MUST read for anyone looking to reinvent their own current culinary career or transfer present skills into the culinary world. As we all know, in this business, anything is possible with a little creativity and dedication.I would recommend this book to anyone searching for the inspiration needed to add a little flavor to their work life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful book!
As a senior in college and not know what I want to do with my history degree, this book definitely presented a lot of options for me. This book helped me find that history majors are not confined to teaching and museum jobs!

4-0 out of 5 stars Targeted for history majors and hits the mark
Personally, this book was a great help to me.Although the strategies suggested for resume and cover letter writing (getting an interview and job) are nothing new, the second half of the book in which the authors describe five different career tracks are excellent in that they are directed specifically towards History Majors. While I originally pictured history majors going into either professional historian-type jobs (e.g. professors, authors) or classroom teaching, the authors very correctly pointed out that historical museums and other pubic education institutions are in need of people with history backgrounds as are businesses, etc.The advice is practical and the information proved to be very specific for me--a history major.Recommended for those of us with history backgrounds still trying to "find themselves" career wise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of information
A highly detailed guide to finding a career using a history background. Has a lot of information about careers and sources for more information. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars jobs
Great book, especially since college is out of reach for most people today.
I read, recently that most students that sign up for a 2 year collage never finish the courses. This will give you a good overview of what you need to start

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas for people without degrees
There is a certain amount of redundancy, and a lot of these careers require another type of training, but this is a good starting point if you are looking to get ideas on careers you can obtain with an associates degree, a GED, or without completing high school or equivalent. Some examples: fashion model, boat captain, lifeguard, bank teller, resume writer, illustrator, tennis instructor. List goes on. ... Read more

Product Description
* Presents the actual jobs and earnings of college graduates in 60 majors!
* The ONLY book based on a U.S. Census Bureau study of 150,000 college graduates.

This terrific handbook offers the most accurate and helpful information available for making decisions on a college major—or what to do with a degree you have. Readers learn which majors are the best investment, the job and salary prospects for specific majors, the employment growth rates for particular majors, and how many graduates go on to additional education.

The new second edition includes substantial new information, including the important steps to take before college to ensure future career success, the rising earnings premiums related to a college education, and the misinformation that exists about college costs and the belief that the "sticker price" of college is the final price. Each chapter describes the major and the courses it requires; discusses jobs that graduates actually obtain; and gives information on employers, tasks, and salaries. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
The book had every college major, but the descriptions were brief and the format was dull. If you're looking for a major, this is probably not the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Excellent reference book for career choices. It has tons of infomation on how various college majors translate into real jobs, and what the expected financial rewards will likely be.This book also discusses what abilities and interests are best suited to each major - very helpful when deciding what path to take.

5-0 out of 5 stars College Majors Handbook
This is a wonderful resource for the "decided" as well as the "undecided" college student or prospective student.Explore your area of interest before you declare a major. The book very clearly addresses on-the-job responsibilities commonly faced by persons pursuing the field, types of jobs available and percentages of majors working in each type of job, salary information and more.It was very helpful to my daughter who knew she was interested in math and/or science but did not know what she wanted to DO.I highly recommend this resource to anyone who is considering college and/or job force change.

4-0 out of 5 stars College Majors Handbook
This handbook has not yet been updated; however, its principles are still
pertinent. The author urges us to understand and know our abilities
artistically, intellectually, spatially, in language, ability to lead,
numerical, organization skills, science, pursuasiveness and socially.

The texts shows sample earnings by knowledge acquired. i.e.
high school, college and graduate school
The difference in earnings can be significant between high school and
graduate school. i.e. well over $1MM dollars in lifetime earnings
Men tend toward business and engineering careers; whereas, women major
in education and the social sciences. Applied mathematicians are
employed by private industry circa 69%; whereas, 9% are self-employed.
Physical therapists are employed by the private sector circa 38% and
11% are self-employed.

This work would be helpful in planning a career over a long term
time horizon. It is worth the price charged for the significant value
of the information contained therein. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very little new or useful information and much more focused on dealing with being fired than having doldrums
I found the book easy to read and mildly interesting but almost completely unhelpful if what one is truly suffering is doldrums. The booked overweighted focus on being fired or retired - niether of which I would consider mid-career doldrums. The title, therefore, is somewhat misleading. If you've been fired or are in retirement and bored, perhaps this would be a great book. However, if like me you are experiencing a lack of interest and motivation in your current career and are actually at mid-career rather than retirement, I don't suggest this book is the right one for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent but not great
This book is geared towards 40-60 year old career switchers.

The book helps with your own self analysis of what is causing your boredom, burnout, retirement, and firing. The book also helps you to realign your thinking about your current job and future job trends in a positive light.

As much as anything, this is a "you can do it" book which empowers those who might be in a career rut and are frustrated or feel helpless.

The advice of this book are solid such as retraining yourself with the latest technology in your field and getting rid of old fashioned "old dogs can't learn new tricks" attitude towards new technology and ideas.

We are in a knowledge based economy where constantly reinventing and learning new skill is critical in almost any job.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better at diagnosis than treatment
Every career counselor knows it's pretty easy to figure out why you didn't like your last job. It's not that hard to figure out what you want. But implementing a plan...that's tough.

The first part of the book is quite good, especially assessing the myths of mid-career. I applaud their recognition of the reality of age discrimination.

But dealing with change post-analysis is more problematic. For instance, the authors note that you may have to work a day job to make room for your passion. It's not that easy. Your day job can leave you exhausted and drained, so you don't have energy or motivation to pursue your dream afterward.

Some suggestions seem surprisingly simplistic. Bored? Enhance your job or find things to do outside the job.

Some sections (such as the few paragraphs on relocation and coaching) are just toobrief to be useful. They point out that relocation can give you a "fresh start," but it's much more complicated. Putting together a new social network takes time.

What bothered me most (and raised doubts about the book) was the brief example on page 48. "Sally" had become so suspicious of age discrimination she over-reacted. That's plausible: I had a client like that.

But then Sally's friend got a job teaching advertising at a local university, which "quickly became a tenure track position." If this story is real, it's not at all typical. In most universities, adjuncts and visiting professors are not considered for permanent positions, even if they're more qualified than other candidates. And few people get "quickly" hired into the tenure track: you have to be considered by a committee and the process takes forever.

A powerful dean or department head could make it happen but then you've got other problems.

So far I haven't found anything better than Herminia Ibarra's Working Identity. This book adds a few ideas, but needs a stronger message to get on my recommendation list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Escape the Mid-Career Doldrums:What to Do Next When You're Bored, Burned-Out, Retired or Fired

I have been a veterinarian for over thirty years. In the last four years, I had become bored and restless.I knew I had another ten years in me, but I also knew it couldn't be as a vet. I had financed what was a dream to me at the time, a new animal hospital.I was trapped. Out of desperation, I picked up "Mid-Life Doldrums."I was stunned as I watched myself come alive.I turned each page only to find myself living there inside. All the feelings and emotions described were mine and I found that others experience the same pain, restlessness, and confusion when their carreer no longer fits. This book put me back on a straight path.I see the world in a whole new way.In January, I closed my office door for the last time and have discovered my new career.I am working with a magnificent herd of 50 horses who belong to Cirque du soleil - Cavalia, the acrobatic-equine ballet that travels all over the world.I still wonder what would have happened to me if I hadn't discovered this book!It calmed me down and got me focused.
