5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
This book was really fun to read and to the point, I recommend it for anyone who is trying to learn about comeputers

4-0 out of 5 stars emphasises software
I'm not sure that the book is really that unique, in terms of its visuals. But certainly it is richly endowed with diagrams that illustrate many key computing concepts. What is distinctive, compared to earlier books, is how he starts off with chapters on the Internet, web and electronic commerce. He explains how the Internet and the web are not actually the same thing, though in general parlance, people often confuse the two. The web dates from the rise of http/html and the first browsers in 1992-3. And e-commerce really only starts in the late 90s.

By doing so, he's acknowledging the importance that the Internet has become to some many of us. Even and especially to someone entering the study of computing. Whereas you might pick up another text on computing, written this year, that delves into a lot of theory, but scarcely mentions the Internet.

The rest of his book is fairly conventional. Though with many illustrations, as mentioned already. The emphasis is on software. The hardware gets a good but brief coverage. ... Read more

Product Description
Since establishingher own fashion house in 1981, Yeohlee's strong and consistent approach to clothing design has made her name synonymous with 'intimate architecture', seasonless efficiency, striking geometrical designs and concise functionalism. She designs for the 'urban nomad', a postmodern consumer who demands adaptable, functional, low-maintenance clothing that looks deceptively simple but makes a powerful impression in changing environments of time, place and circumstance. This book features insightful essays from a number of prominent fashion critics and curators, as well as beautiful colour photographs, and patterns for some of her most iconic designs. Yeohlee Teng was the recipient of the prestigious 2004 Fashion Design Award. This award is given to an individual or firm for outstanding achievement in clothing, accessory or footwear design, and is part of the National Design Awards, presented by the Smithsonian Institution's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum to honour Americsn creator ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finding beauty in efficiency
True to her designing philosophy of finding beauty in simple and efficient patterns, her book is cut from the same cloth. Simple white cover with a small chinese character like figurine taking a bow draws you into the world of design with purpose and reason. Yeohlee lays out the foundation of her designing philosophy as it were an architectural project. She explains how each and every detail of her designs have purpose, and reason. The beautiful results, depicted by the crisp photos of her cloths through out her book, is almost like a by-product of the passion she has for the efficiency and purpose. You will see for yourself when you pick up the book of why I came to that conclusion. Even though the designs stand on their own in pleasing the eyes, the explanations behind those designs will make you appreciate those designs even more. If you have not had the pleasure of discovering Yeohlee's designs yet, this book would be a wonderful introduction to her world of design with purpose and reason. And to those who already appreciate her work, you will be treated to answers to your many many curiosities and questions about her designs. Happy reading. =) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a book!
This is not a book - this could be called a pamphlet at best! Worst 54 dollar that I've ever spent!
What a rip off. How can this thing be sold for 54 dollars!!! It is ridiculous. Spend your hard earned money for something worth - this so called "book" is definitely not worth it!

1-0 out of 5 stars I have never spend 45 dollars and felt so duped in my life
First let me agree with the other poster that, majority of the book(if you can call it) is about TIBCO GI and rest is about Business Studio and not about Business Works.
And the the favorable reviews you see in here about this book are from people who wants you to buy the book i,e the people who wrote the book (again if you can call it a book).

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Useful
I ordered a pdf version of the book and i found it useless. It covers business studio and not business works , half of the book wasted on general interface FQA.

4-0 out of 5 stars help prepare yourself for the interview
I'm not quite a fresher (rather the opposite) but I find that in preparing for an interview I am always slightly nervous. This book covers all of the high points, plus many other points that I had forgotten.

So this book has a great deal of value in that one can understand the technology and what is required for the interview. Nothing more, nothing less.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why is this book $54,-?
Few books can be found on Tibco. This book sounded like a gem to get some inside knowledge from an expert in preparing for our certification. Little did we know.

156 pages is nog large for a "Computer book". But given the fact that the book is ridiculously small the amount of information is ridiculously little as well. If you consider the cost per page in this book is about $0.33 you reckon a three page Java exception print out is a waste of space.

Don't buy this book! It's a waste of your money! ... Read more

Product Description
More than a means of moving merchandise, advertising has been increasingly recognized not only as an art form all its own, but also as a central, defining element of popular culture. Together, the 14 chapters of Advertising Today provide a thematic overview of the evolution of advertising around the world over the past 30 years, charting influences from the political and social upheavals of the 1960s, to the appropriation of cinematic production techniques and special effects in the 1980s, to the influence of the Internet in the 1990s. Each chapter includes an interview with a key figure in advertising — including Italy’s Oliviero Toscani of the controversial Benetton campaigns, the award-winning Brazilian Nizan Guanaes, American comedian and American-Express spokesperson Jerry Seinfeld, and British adman John Hegarty of Bartle Boyle Hegarty, creator of the world-famous Levi’s ads. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Got advertising?
Hardly anyone outside the industry itself has a high opinion of advertising, and I'm probably no different -- most of the time. However, I've long appreciated the occasional high degree of originality and wit of which ad writers and artists have shown themselves capable, especially since the late 1950s. This fat volume brings all of them together, beginning with Volkwagen's groundbreaking "Think Small" campaign. There are chapters on the influence of European copywriting on American ads, the development of a new "visual language," the rise of backhanded "oddvertising," the growth of advertising as a reflection of (and finally an agent of) social change, and the advent of guerilla anti-advertising, each of them an entertaining and instructive mix of graphics and text. There's even a separate chapter on the ups and downs of the famous and long-running "Got Milk?" campaign. This gorgeous book will keep you studying the artwork and reading the discussions far into the night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Layout, very up-to-date with today's top Ad firms
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful....not only because I'm in it, (brother used me in one of his shoots for Village Voice campaign)...but, buying this book is a great way to see innovation and artistry normally slated for galleries...

5-0 out of 5 stars rave reviews for this book
As the proud author, just wanted to share w/readers some of the recent press reviews for Advertising Today:
"An amazing book," says Esquire magazine; a 4-star rating from Maxim magazine; Village Voice says "media archaelogists will pore over it for decades to come"; praised on ABC World News; on her radio show, Joan Rivers called it "fabulous" & the hot new coffee table book; J. Walter Thompson pres. Bob Jeffrey says, "Never has a book captured the heart and soul of advertising as much as Advertising Today."

5-0 out of 5 stars You get a lot of book for your money
This isn't just a book for ad students and insiders, though I imagine they'd love it. I'm not an ad junkie myself, but I happen to love this book because it's a very different and interesting coffee table book, that you can spend hours looking at. The ads featured in the book are amazing - funny, clever, intriguing, sometimes works of art in themselves. And the captions explain what's going on, all that sly thinking and logic behind the ads. I find it's the kind of book that really gets people talking. But be forewarned - it's a huge book, so make sure you have a strong coffee table!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Curmudgeon
Warren is the best there is when it comes to reviewing the current Ad scene. However there are some factaul errors in the book. i.e. He talks about the breakthrough work that PKL did for Smirnof vodka in the sixties... It was'nt for Smirnof, it was for Wolfschmidt Vodka. Even more important was the work PKL did to launch the first Xerox dry copier, with the famous "Monkey" commercial.
However, the most dramatic ommision was that there was absolutely no mention of Jack Tinker Associates, the InterPublic think tank that kick started Mary Wells into Wells Green Inc.
Otherwise, a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Demystifies Digital Computer Internals. Simply. Clearly.
After hearing about digital computers while in high school (this was mid 80s), I was extremely curious about understanding how these so called 'computers' work. The idea that they can make decisions, remember things etc. was simply fascinating. General popular science articles weren't clear enough to give the complete picture.

I was lucky to find a copy of this book in my school library. I took home this book, and simply read the book through the night. and what an experience it was!.

It builds on absolutely fundamental concepts, logical components, simple logic gates, the mysterious flip-flop, the universal gate, the ROM, and then on to the stored program computer.. the register, program counter, Arithmetic, Logic Unit, The Instruction Decoder. my..my. In such simple terms. and then on to,in fact, build a commercial microprocessor of the age, step by step.

One of those rare , simple elegant books, that can get you started and then hook us on to the subject.

Absolutely relevent today as well. since we still fundamentally use the same architecture, believe it or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding text
I'm not sure if this is a later edition of the book I used or not 20 years ago, because it was just titled Digital Electronics back them. But if it is, and it's as good as the original edition, it was probably the best introduction to the subject I'd ever read. Clear and concise explanations of basic principles and digital circuit components made this a valuable reference and study book for me. In fact, as a result of reading this book on my own, I was able to test out of the introductory digital circuits class at my college and get into the second semester class. The book was a standard textbook for years at the colleges near my home, and it has taught thousands of electronic hobbyists, technicians, and engineers over the last 20 years this important field of electronics. Truly a great classic by an outstanding teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book for building concept
I read this book back in 80's while doing my bachelor in electronics engineering.
This book gave me a solid understanding of the heart and sole of a computer.
Later I used this book for my lectures at various levels. A must have book for every one who wants a real foundation in computer science career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Digital Computer Electronics
In general the approach of this book is definitely a good one for a beginner as well as a student well versed on the subject.
The material covered in this book does require one to put the "full" effort forward, but with great effect. The only negative
part of the book is that the SAP-2 model is not done correctly. Other then this, the book is great for learning digital logic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but still better than all the rest
This is hands-down the best introduction to the principles of digital electronics that I have ever read. With clear, concise explanations, I have used it as a self-teaching aid when I was first learning about digital logic as well as a source of material for my classes. The basic educational model is the example/solution and there is a self-testing review and problems at the end of each chapter. Solutions to the odd problems are included in an appendix.
While the hardware used in the exercises is very dated, that does not detract from the main point of the book, which is to teach the principles of digital logic. I still use it as a major reference when I teach those principles in an upper level course in computer structure. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars great theme, beautiful illustrations, horrible text
My 2 1/2 year old loves (adores, really) this book. Each double-page spread shows both a specific tool (hammer, drill, shears, etc) and the progression of building an old-fashioned carousel. The pictures are really gorgeous, with lots of detail, and very stylized.

But the text.Oh, the text. The review calls it "poetry."Um, no.Not by a long shot. Not even close. It's quite possibly the worst attempt at personification I've ever read. It's painful to read, and neither I nor my husband can read it without cracking up.Most of the time we skip the text and just talk about the pictures.

It really is a beautiful book, so it's a shame the writing doesn't match the quality of the illustrations. ... Read more

Product Description
"Why Don't You . . .

tie black tulle bows on your wrists?
have a yellow satin bed entirely quilted in butterflies?
remember how delicious champagne cocktails are after tennis or golf? Indifferent champagne can be used for these."

For more than half a century, Diana Vreeland, doyenne of American fashion, beguiled, awed, astonished, and was adored by almost anyone who created or wore clothes.

Irresistible and flamboyant, socialite Mrs. T. Reed Vreeland began her now legendary twenty-five-year tenure at Harper's Bazaar writing a column of audacious advice:extravagant ideas that helped redefine American women and twentieth-century fashion. Her commentary created a fashion frenzy when it began appearing in Harper's Bazaar in 1936. Her ideas were simultaneously stylish and outrageous, and have as much appeal today as they did decades ago.

Here for the first time, John Esten has compiled one hundred of Mrs. Vreeland's kaleidoscopic "Why Don't You . . . ?" suggestions, and paired them with the breathtaking works of such renowned photographers and artists as Munkacsi, Dahl-Wolfe, Hoyningen-Heune, and Bérard, which further capture the dazzling legacy of whimsy, elegance, and style of Mrs. Vreeland's Bazaar years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful read...
This book is something to read on a rainy day. It is beautifully put together and very mood uplifting. The suggestions do not seem all that outrageous to me and indeed could add that very necessary flair or as Diana would say PIZAZZ to your life. I love her suggestions for interior decorating. She talks about the pursuit of the perfect RED. How lovely to imagine living a life where your most important concerns are finding the perfect RED. And yes this book is probably for people who are already fans of Diana. Great pictures too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why don't you?
My only qualm: I wish there'd been more "Why don't you...?"s. Frankly, I couldn't get enough of them:

"Why don't you have your cigarettes stamped with a personal insignia as a well-known explorer did with a penguin?"

"Why don't you rinse your blond child's hair in dead champagne to keep its gold, as they do in France?"

"Why don't you wear violet velvet mittens with everything?"

Indeed, why don't I?

This slim book far outshines its company in the Diana Vreeland library, and especially "Allure," a gigantic coffee table book with photographs that appear to have been digitized with a $20 scanner.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Connoisseur
Of course, you must know and love Mrs. Vreeland to be here in the first place.Given that you do, buy this book. Don't expect a compendium of her suggestions and aphorisms.Do expect a delightful hour's browse.Well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a pretty book!
Any info on D.V. is exciting to me. This pretty book is filled with great photos and listing of all the "Why Don't You" articles created by Diana during her days at Harpers. If you are a fan of Diana Vreeland (as I am) you must add this book to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's FABULOUS, daaaaarling!
I LOVED this book. Diana Vreeland's "Why don't you..." suggestions are absolutely wild. They're obviously intended for women of *great* means (why don't you give a diamond bracelet as a gift to the wife of your favorite bandleader?). And some of the suggestions are so out there, I swear she was chewing magic mushrooms. My favorite is the suggestion to put in a private staircase from your bedroom to the library, and have it carpeted with a needlepoint rug that spells out the notes to your favorite tune. My god, you're right, I'll do that tomorrow!!
This book is great to read out loud at a party.

the strange thing is, I am not sure if it's intentionally funny. The author clearly admires Vreeland, and it's a very affectionate book with wonderful photographs.

It is definitely a great glimpse at another era, and at a level of society I can only imagine. To have the kind of money that allows you to do some of these things is beyond my wildest dreams. It's a fun fantasy trip, and a fun retro trip. Five stars. ... Read more
