5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn the basics of Criminal Investigation. As a person who has been in the field for over 20 years, I feel that this should be a required read for all developing police officers. This book will help any police officer prepare for the many facets of criminal investigation. It is also good for those with experience as a detective that may be transitioning from one area of investigations to another. If you are a law enforcement officer that would like to increase your knowledge and effectiveness on the job, get this book and read it!In doing so, you may be able to stop yourself, or a fellow officer from accidentally destroying evidence that is vital to solving a case.In some departments, you will even be able to teach your detectives something that they may not be aware of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Purchase
Smooth transaction. The book arrived promptly in almost new condition (listed as used). I was completely surprised how new it was. Thanks for a great experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars 9 out of 10. Not for the faint hearted
This book delivers. It gives a very good introduction to the law enforcement in the U.S. It sounds like a good book to be in hand for every beginnner police officer and for those who intend to practice that path. I must say that the high number of real cases described and of photos, though sometimes exciting, could be disturbing. I give it 9/10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, well-written
If you are looking for a current, comprehensive review of the field of criminal investigation, this is a good book. It's a large, heavy book filled with excellent graphics and color photos and text supplemented by actual case examples. Well worth the price. I bought this for a class, but I am keeping it for future reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
There is absolutely nothing new or useful in this book that you cannot find by hitting the google search. Also, there is no info on materials used in the actual exams and/or tranings. Watch the sleeper cell show and you shall get a better idea of the most challenging work an special agent might end up doing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average
While this book offered some interesting information, it did not present much information that I did not already know from casual research. Some parts of the book were none too detailed. Contrary to the title, it does not offer tips for getting hired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Great read & informative.
I don't like a lot of authors' writing styles. But, this guy reads like the classics. I am very picky; I can pick-up a book & put it down after reading the first page because it's garbage. This guy, however, flows in his writing. And he sounds like he's been in the Bureau for most of his life & can walk you through it. Very thorough, but not too much. Bravo! to the author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Purpose!
This is book in indeed good for the person wanting to become a Special Agent. Not so useful, if looking to join the FBI in a professional career other than being a SA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly well-written
This is a great book for anyone considering a career in the FBI or just to find out what the FBI is REALLY all about.

3-0 out of 5 stars An elementary guide
On a desperate lookout for a new career on these times of massive layoffs, I decided to read a guide that would suggest ways to achieve the ever more elusive "American dream" while at the same time working on a field I truly enjoy.Blythe Cameson has put out and average guide that is now invariably outdated (the book was printed in 1997), yet it gives preliminary information on the different careers for fans of the mystery genre like me.

I must admit I found no correlation whatsoever to the mystery genre in some of the careers explored, especially science careers such as astronomy. In Ms. Cameson's viewpoint, even careers such as sociology and psychology would not be directly related to mystery writing or reading, unless we all become our very own Miss Marples or Hercule Poirots. In fact, it could be said that for Cameson, almost every career in the world relates somehow to the mystery genre. Some careers like "landscape anthropologist" are, in all actuality, a specialization of the original discipline - i.e. anthropology - they are associated with, yet Cameson introduces them as a separate and independent career.

Perhaps because she is a writer, Cameson appears overtly enthusiastic in chapter 1, when expounding about the idea of becoming a mystery writer as the first occupational option for the mystery fan and as something that is fairly easy to achieve if one is persistent enough. However, it is not only rare but extremely hard to become published in today's world, and mystery writing presented as a career is not, in my opinion, a particularly good suggestion, at least not for a newbie.

The book does have some good resources listed, including career books, websites and institutions both on the national, governmental level as well as in the private sector, where to start - just start - a search towards future employment as a mystery fan.A true negative appears to be that most of the career options do not pay well, and if they do, they require long study, mostly ending with a Ph.D.Perhaps this is after all Cameson's method to ensure publication of the mystery fan's very own novel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good summary for the USA
Quite a short book, but it's not a huge topic. Oriented towards the forensic science arena in the USA, it doesn't offer any tips for internationalizing its summaries, so the international reader is left with little idea of the differences in the way the field is structured. That said, it does summarize the opportunities available for general criminalists, pathologists, toxicologists, crime scene managers and so on, and gives rough salary, training estimates, brief job descriptions, along with example job advertisements for each section.

2-0 out of 5 stars A teaser
Apparently Mr. Pankau thinks his readers aren't savvy enough to realize his books contain just enough information to "make you dangerous", but not enough to follow through thoroughly. I have no doubt that Mr. Pankau makes the majority of his wages by writing books and lecturing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, Interesting and Surpising
I found this book to be a wealth of information on what information tracks people, is public, or provided to anyone for a minimal fee. I was especially surpised to find information about MYSELF...which is why I bought 'Hide your assets and disappear'.I agree with another review that states that the book is interesting and helps explain how people are traced..but fails to instruct exactly HOW it is you should go about it. I would have liked to have seen a more precise, instructional book...but I still recommend this as a great read.Using the book's advice and the internet I've come across lots of information that has proved useful. It's a small investment with a big pay-off in knowledge. Perhaps he'll write a follow-up where he goes into more detail.I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK and enjoyed it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Check It Out
After hearing the Author on a radio program I decided to get this book.I was a little disappointed. The book has some great ideas on how to obtain information on people, but the author does not tell you how to go aboutgetting this information.Alot of this book is about the author's personalexperiences, but again he does not tell you how he got the information fromhis sources to solve the case. I guess if he did he would be out of a job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Check It Out!:A Top Investigator Shows You How to
This is a book that is very current with the information, and has some great information not found in other books on this topic.I have read every book I can find on this subject and this is by far one of the best.

2-0 out of 5 stars Would have made an okay magazine article
This book is a slim 160 pages if you add the introductory material, not 178 pages as advertised. The missing 18 pages may have been the index, since there isn't one, and there is no way to find anything withoutflipping through the book. The content comes off as a rough draft, andreally needed someone to structure and edit it. Overall it feels like avanity press book. Despite the slim size of the book, there is much that isleft out. For example, we are told how to determine what state a socialsecurity number was issued in, but for the more useful information of howto decode the year it was issued, we are told to "buy another book[Pankau] wrote called the Investigator's Guide." If this is actuallythe book titled "The Investigative Guidebook" available onAmazon, well it looks like we need to shell out another $35 for another"178-page" book. Another area that bothers me is that many of thetechniques he describes seem to be of borderline legality. I'd like a moreinformed opinion about this than Pankau's; on the Art Bell show, he reallyseemed to be playing fast and loose with what was legal and not. ... Read more

This book has 10 examples of jobs that involve some form of criminal forensics: Firearms Examiner, Latent Fingerprint Examiner, Forensic Anthropologist, Forensic Microscopist, Investigator-Insurance Fraud, Forensic Pathologist, Bloodstain Pattern Analyst, Police Detective/Forensic Artist, Computer Forensic Specialist and Forensic Science Lab Director. THIS IS GREAT because it applies generic characteristics to a specific job. 2-0 out of 5 stars It was a pleasure putting this back on the shelf!
I rated this as a 2 only because you couldn't rate it a one and a half. I must admit the descriptions on both the covers say alot to attract you in. Unfortunately, I have to say that this book is not well liked by myself or the other 4 people, in my company, who reviewed it. The information isclearly the most basic, at best. I found that the authors severely lack inresearch experience and easily could have done a better job on this book. While reading through the sections covering computer security, bodyguards, private security, etc., I discovered that the authors, who have nopractical job experience in these areas, painted a false picture in theirdescriptions.

This again shows lack of research and creative writingexperience. The publisher has put out somemuch better law enforcementpublications. Personally, I can't understand why they accepted thetranscript from the these authors. I have put this book back on the shelf, where it belongs, and use it as a reminder of where "not" to golooking for this specialty career information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide to understanding law enforcement positions
This book is a good explanation of how to locate different law enforcement jobs. It's easy to understand and well written.Great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad, but serious candidates can do better.
If you're interested in law enforcement, but don't have the slightest idea where to start, you might get something out of this book.If you've taken any criminal justice or law enforcement classes, however, skip this one andpick up a book that isn't so elementary. The best book ever written onfederal law enforcement positions is "Guide to Careers in Federal LawEnforcement," by Thomas H. Ackerman.Your chances of getting a job infederal law enforcement will increase substantially if you have theinformation presented in Ackerman's book. Those who want to be municipalcops should consider "Police Officer," by Hugh O'Neil.AlthoughO'Neil's book is quite basic, there is some good information about gettinginto police departments.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for young people
Contains very basic information. Might be helpful for someone who has just started to think about a career in law enforcement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start for information
If you haven't done any research in this career field it is well worth it.However, most is basic information. But it is a great gift for a young person interested in crime fighting or for anyone just starting the searchfor that certain job in this field. ... Read more

The text is a perfect combination of real, practical, and effective techniques/procedures and actual case examples. The text goes into great detail in building the basic foundation of effective interviewing skills, such as understanding human psychology (in deception), proper interview preparation, successfully employing the self-fulfilling prophecy, tactical concepts, evidence collection, public vs. private sector investigations, the interview process, controlling the interview environment, proper phrasing of questions (closed vs. open questions), and evaluating the evidence obtained from the interview. The text then demonstrates practical application of these skills using actual case examples.I highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn effective investigative interviewing skills.

As always, check with your local library or bookstore to see if you can read/review this or any title before deciding to make a purchase. This method has effectively allowed me to make the most of my investigative library budget.

I hope you found this review helpful. [...]

It talks about numerous interviewing techniques on how to extract vital information from the person your interviewing without asking "leading questions". I got over 5 pages of notes out of the first few chapters alone.
