4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
If you work in human resources, the manual put together by editors Richard A. Swanson and Elwood F. Holton III will probably find its way onto a shelf close by your desk, where it can be easily reached as a reference tool. The chapters of this book, which were written by different authors but have been organized into a logical whole, help span the gap between theory and practice in the human resources field. You'll likely find yourself reaching for this dense, informative book every time your start planning a survey, training program or research project. If you're not in HR, this book is more likely to find its way into cardboard box on a dusty shelf at the back of a dark closet. The content, although quite innovative and detailed, is simply too specialized for a general readership. Therefore, werecommend this book to human resource professionals at all levels, and strongly encourage students of the discipline to study these pages before setting out in the real world of business.

5-0 out of 5 stars BOOK CLUB SELECTION
In response to the research and practice focus of the book-- the "Human Resource Development Research Handbook" was honored by The Executive Program as one of their book club selections.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very practical guide to carrying out research!
This text sets itself apart by outlining the first, basic steps in conducting research for those who are frightened or ill-equipped to conduct the structured research that is so clearly needed by the OD and HRD field. Structured research's outcome, the editors argue, "is new knowledge, obtained through an orderly, investigative process" (Swanson, p. 10).Theprocess they ascribe to includes a theory-research-development-practicecycle, which the authors describe as a vital cycle that allows ideas to beprogressively refined as they evolve from concepts to practices and frompractices to concepts. The book details steps in conducting bothqualitative and quantitative research. It is a practical, hands-onreference manual created by those who are well-experienced.A must for anygraduate student! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not for anyone with common sense
What a waste of an hour I spent, looking for something useful in this book. I'm a small business owner, so I am already familiar with many of the HR issues that pop up on a typical day. I hoped this book with delve into some of the deeper matters, for instance, legally, about HR. It did not.

It is full of common sense stuff that is almost ridiculous. For example, about conducting an employee investigation: "Don't physically restrain your employees or tell them that they cannot leave if they don't answer your questions."
And the book tells you, in regards to installing a camera system "do not place cameras in break areas, bathrooms , and employee changing rooms". It's insultingly simple advice.

To boot, the Kindle version contains a few sentences that are completely cut-off in mid-sentence and other grammatical errors.

If you are a savvy business person, I highly doubt you'll find this book useful. Look elsewhere.

I really can't imagine why anyone would rate this book above one-star.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for manager, needs more depth to be useful for HR professionals
This in excellent primer on all things HR for HR professionals as well as managers. The 10 chapters covers all the major areas of HR including selection; policies; performance management; training & development; employees relations; as well as compensation and benefits.

The chapters are Witten in a Q & A format: common questions relating to the chapter's topic are answered in a fairly straight-forward manner and with enough details. Most concepts are explained succinctly and clearly without boring the reader. I especially liked the fact that the questions deal with both conceptual and practical elements of each topic. For example, in the chapter on HR policies, one of the questions is "should our company have an employee handbook?" and the answer explains both the legal and practical need for the handbook. Another question focuses on the "stylistic considerations in writing the manual."

The only complaint I had with the book is in the depth of the material covered. In targeting both HR professionals and managers, the authors may have had, by necessity, to "tune-down" some of the content and therefore, as an HR professional this was a little too basic for me to be as useful as it could've been.

5-0 out of 5 stars The HR Answer Book
I found this book very helpful for a new person to the field of HR, obviously its not meant as an "authority" but it does provide helpful insight on what to do. It's a SUPER easy read and it was very, very practical. The best way I can describe it is that it's like one of those "for dummy's" books; you have a question-the book answers it.

Again, very helpful, great advice, a must have for anyone new to the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
I am the sole HR person at my company. So, using this book has been very helpful and easy to use.I hope this book gets updated in a timely manner for future HR professionals/managers to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keep Within Easy Reach
As a corporate HR director for a fortune 500 company, I am supposed to have all the answers when the phone rings or someone walks in the door.I don't have all the answers and never will and that is why I keep reference books such as the HR Answer Book within easy reach.

I can recommend this book to anyone in HR at any level. It's topic matter ranges from the very simple to more complex issues.I hope the revised version will contain a large section on labor relations as this is an area that many in HR struggle with.Michael L. Product Description

Corporations are undergoing dramatic changes that have significant implications for how human resources are best managed and organized. There is growing consensus that human capital is critical to an organization’s success. But how should the HR function itself be organized? Is change in HR keeping pace with organizational change overall?

Creating a Strategic Human Resources Organization reports the findings from a 6-year longitudinal study of whether and how the HR functions in large corporations are responding to the challenges and opportunities posed by the changing business environment. The book identifies the changes that will be required in order for HR to become a true strategic partner, and suggests why, in too many companies, this transition is not occurring. It examines the paradoxical roles played in this transition by the focus on talent management and the application of IT capabilities, and proposes a new way of conceptualizing HR as providing three service lines. It finds that the most effective HR teams are substantially changing their mix of activities to become knowledge-based contributors to organizational strategy and effectiveness.

The authors conclude that HR is at a crossroads, and will either have to face up to these challenges or become a marginal contributor to corporate success.

The study was carried out at the Center for Effective Organizations in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, and was funded by the Human Resource Planning Society and the corporate sponsors of the Center for Effective Organizations.

Product Description
Updating the book since its last publication in 1985, this newedition of the landmark work on human resource accounting has beensubstantially revised to reflect the current state of the fieldthrough the late 1990s. The economies of many nations are increasinglydominated by knowledge- or information-based sectors driven by highlytrained and specialized personnel. Whereas physical capital was of theutmost economic importance in the past, the distinctive feature of theemerging post-industrial economies is an increasing reliance on humanand intellectual capital. The growing importance of human capital as adeterminant of economic success at both the macroeconomic andmicroeconomic levels dictates that firms need to adjust to this neweconomic reality. Specifically, if human capital is a key determinantfor organizational success, then investment in the training anddevelopment of employees to improve performance is a criticalcomponent of this success. This broad socioeconomic shift underscores a growing need formeasuring and analyzing human capital when making managerial andfinancial decisions. Yet important human resource decisions involvinghiring, training, compensation, productivity and other matters areoften made in the absence of specific information about the differentcosts and benefits of these particular choices. Human resourceaccounting is a managerial tool that can be used to gain this valuableinformation by measuring the costs of recruiting, hiring, compensatingand training employees. It can be used to evaluate employee trainingprograms, increase productivity, and improve managerialdecision-making regarding promotions, transfers, layoffs, replacementand turnover. Case studies illustrate, for example:+ How an insurance company evaluated a training program for claimsadjusters and found that it would return two dollars for every onedollar spent.+ How a human resources accounting study revealedthat an electronics firm's losses from employee turnover equalled oneyear's new income, and how the company initiated a program to reduceturnovers. The third edition presents the current state of the art of humanresource accounting by (1) examining the concepts and methods ofaccounting for people as human resources; (2) explaining the presentand potential uses of human resource accounting for human resourcemanagers, line managers and investors; (3) describing the research, experiments and applications of human resource accounting inorganizations; (4) considering the steps involved in developing ahuman resource accounting system; and (5) discussing some of theremaining aspects of human resource accounting that require furtherresearch. ...
