1-0 out of 5 stars very basic HR information
I purchased this book hoping it would provide insight into human resources issues that occur when running a business.Unfortunately, it doesn't.It offers little or no "how-to" or useful information.

Renckly's book does provide very basic information, but offers very little that is compelling or informative. In most cases, it simply rehashes common sense.

The most useful portion of the book details what front line managers SHOULD NOT ask in a hiring interview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent small business resource
I found this book to be an excellent resource for my small business. It summarizes all of the relevant HR issues for any business, allowing me to choose which ones I need to address in my business. The book includesexample forms and policies and even summarizes legal cases relevant to theHR issue being discussed. It has been a valuable resource for me ever sinceI bought it. ... Read more

Product Description

“An exciting read, you won’t want to put Motivate Like a CEO down until you’ve mastered all of its secrets!”
Marshall Goldsmith, New York Times bestselling author of What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

"Motivated leaders are rare, yet everyone seeks to become one. The greatness of this book is that it breaks down the process by giving you the ideas and the tools to motivate and inspire yourself first, and then others second. If you’re in a leadership position or hoping to get to the next level, make the decision to buy this book, study this book, and put it into practice."
-Jeffrey Gitomer, author of The Little Red Book of Selling

The most successful leaders seem to possess a remarkable gift for inspiring and motivating people. They are not only hard workers who possess great business minds; they rally others to drive forward with a powerful, common vision. Motivate Like a CEO demonstrates how leaders at every level can develop this skill and use it to bring their teams together around a common purpose.

In this follow-up to her bestselling Speak Like a CEO, Suzanne Bates explains how you can become a powerful force of influence within your organization and position your company for greatness. You'll learn how to translate simple, effective concepts into brilliant execution; get people working together on the highest priorities; and align warring factions to channel energy into the efforts that make your company profitable.

Inside, you’ll discover secrets to generate excitement all the way down the line to achieve superior results. Real-world stories of leaders who have transformed their organizations will inspire you to move your own organization to a position of strength. And, you’ll find helpful, easy-to-follow advice on how to communicate ina way that inspires people to act.

Motivate Like a CEO teaches you how to:

  • Inspire people to embrace and share your vision
  • Speak with energy and confidence in tough situations
  • Turn challenges into opportunities
  • Get your team engaged, in the loop, and tracking real results
  • Make time in your schedule for sharing your message of motivation throughout your company

Even a well-positioned, strategically sound company will fail if its messages and focus are not clear. Successful leaders must be able to move the strategic plan from words on paper into the hearts and minds of the people who make it happen.

Motivate Like a CEO can help you significantly improve bottom line results, create a happier, more unified team of people, and allow you to leave a legacy of leadership.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is great. It gives wonderful tips with great definitions of why these tips work.It really is one of those books you just can't put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for a CEO in the making
Suzanne teaches you the why, how, what of these key points in Motivate Like a CEO....a must read for today's up and comer:

· A motivated work force is the key to unlocking the potential of your organization and thriving as a company

· It's a leader's job to inspire people and connect them with purpose and passion

· Leaders need to learn what motivates others because everyone is different

· The skill leaders must cultivate is the ability to communicate a vision in a powerful way that inspires people to act

· The first principle of Motivate Like a CEO is it begins with you - your purpose and passion

4-0 out of 5 stars Its all about Communication
I figured since I am a CEO, I should figure out how to motivate like a CEO so I read the book called, "Motivate Like A CEO Communicate Your Strategic Vision and Inspire People to Act!" by Suzanne Bates.

The first chapter resonated a lot with me. The gist of the message is summarized by one of the quotes, "Purpose is necessary, critical to a happy, healthy, and successful life". The message is that purpose is essential for motivation. The challenge is that people are motivated by different things. People work for a pay cheque but they live for a purpose. The first step in leading an organization is to be in touch with your own purpose.

The second chapter talks about the eight principles of motivating others through communication. In her previous book, Bates wrote "Speaking Like a CEO" and much of her topic was on communications. This book further re-emphasizes that with eight principles which include:

1) Begins with you -- your purpose and passion.
2) Communicate a clear powerful mission.
3) Learn what motivates people.
4) Make personal connections with others.
5) Make the conversation about them (like Stephen Covey's first law -- Seek first to understand).
6) Praise recognize and reward.
7) Walk the talk.
8) Empower people (I am big on this one. I don't believe any organization is scaleable unless people are empowered to do the right thing). Any leader is very limited if they expect to control and do everything themselves.

The book has exercises on how to discover your purpose; how to connect with people to purpose; link the what with the why, etc.

The book absolutely needs to be written. It is clear that good leaders need to inspire people and the book gives a lot of the reasons why they need to be inspired and some examples on how some people were inspired. I think in some cases it is harder to put into action some of the ideas in real-life.

I found the book to be an easy read and very well laid out. I like the summaries at the end of the chapters and you could read just the insert boxes to understand the book.

It is a good, well written book for any leader.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful System for Motivating Others
We think we know what motivates others, but often we are mistaken. As a case and point, a leading law firm recently announced that it had offered all of its 1000 associates a year off with 1/3 pay. The firm's management was caught flat-footed by the large numbers of young professionals who applied for the offer. The managing partners thought only a handful would be interested, with the rest focused like a laser--as the older partners had once been--on their careers. Not the case.

What I love about Suzanne Bates' "Motivate Like a CEO" is that she makes you really think about what motivates others, and then gives you specific tools to do so. The first chapter, "Eight Principles for Motivating Others Through Communication" is worth the price of the book. These principles include: Identify a clear purpose; communicate a powerful mission; learn what motivates others; make a personal connection; and make the conversation about them. The rest of the book has great chapters which spell out a series of communications techniques and strategies to engage and motivate the people in your department or broader organization.

"Motivate Like a CEO" is well written, engaging, and full of excellent examples and cases. If you are in any kind of leadership position, whether in a small team or at the top of a large enterprise, this is a must-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A roadmap to better leadership
A self-taught Internet entrepreneur, I'm in my 11th year of leading my company.I never thought I needed business training or an MBA; however, as my company matures, I find that different skills are needed to help it continue to prosper.Motivate Like a CEO is giving me a roadmap to one of the most important skills, especially during this time of change and growth: giving my team what it needs to deliver the goods every day. Bates' easy-reading style and concrete, real world examples make this a book I'll pass around to my colleagues - and read again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook for an introductory class
I got this book for an introductory Human Resource Management class I had to take at my university. No complaints with the book. I didnt read it all, but most of what I read was well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and well written Human Resource Management Resource
I was required to use this text book in my Human Resource Management class for my MBA requirements. I do not have an HR background so a lot of the information presented in this book is new to me. The authors do a great job of presenting the material in an easy to understand manner. There are a lot of real life examples and case studies that are interesting to read and help to put the concepts in to perspective.

This book will be a great reference in my professional life. It has employment laws, recruitment strategies, training and placement strategies to name a few. This is a must read for any HR professional and it really brings to focus the need for a stronger HR presence in companies to help them stay competitive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent texbook for the HR Management beginner
This textbook is designed to let the student extract the maximum information in minimum time. There is enough graphics with tables, charts and bullet points and some passages are in gray. When you read it, you realize that HR Management is no brain surgery, just the appliacation of principles, common sense, fairness and decency. The book has plenty of useful references and readings for those who are interested in further HR reading, but covers comprtehensively all the basic stuff, incl. HR history and some real-life examples. However, since it is a textbook, the only point to improve in the next edition, is boxing or highlighting all the definitions, and adding some poignant Australian examples. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is a good textbook
This was a simply stated book that gave common sense examples.

The chapters were easy to understand without having to have your professor explain everything.

There are a couple of chapters that seem like they should be reorganized, and a couple of chapters that should be put in a different order. Overall though, this is a very good book to help you understand Human Resource Management.

3-0 out of 5 stars Creative multimedia tie-ins, but getting dated?
I suspect that a new edition will be out shortly. Some of the Internet links sprinkled throughout this book are broken, and the text frequently refers to conditions as they were, "as of mid-1997."Hopefully, the authors will employ a proofreader/style editor, as the sytnax is awkward in a few places. That said, this is a good introductory book. The creative integration of Internet links and video case studies ("On Location at Showtime," and ABC News reports on business trends and issues) add to the value of the text.An Internet site allows instructors to develop an on-line syllabus for students to view and download.Key terms are set on the margins in blue print, repeating their definitions from the text.Summaries at the end of each chapter do the same, and include questions designed to verify reader knowledge of major concepts. The book dwells at length on diversity issues, which is appropriate, given the plethora of Exceutive Orders, Supreme Court decisions, and legislation mandating various EEO/affirmative action practices in the HR field. The chapters on recruitment, selection, and training are the strongest in the book, and cover the topics in a fair amount of depth. The chapter on labor unions reveals a pro-union bias; otherwise, the book is ideology-free.Overall, this is a more than adequate treatment of the subject, and is quite serviceable. ... Read more

Product Description
The second edition of this extensively revised text provides a critical evaluation of current developments in human resource management (HRM) through a fresh user-friendly and international approach. It balances a comprehensive overview of HRM theory--the latest ideas, theories, and research findings--with a close examination of developing HRM practices illustrated by numerous case studies.

Human Resource Management: Theory and Practice, Second Edition, was written specifically to fulfill the need of introductory undergraduate and graduate courses for a rigorous analysis of HRM. For some time there has been a tendency of textbooks on personnel/human resource management to be much more prescriptive than analytical. This edition's purpose is to provide the reader with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the latest relevant theories, practices, and functional activities of HRM on a global basis.

This book is divided into five major parts: Part I introduces the nature and role of HRM and addresses some of the controversial theoretical issues surrounding the HRM discourse; Part II reviews the external contexts that affect HRM policies and actions inside the organization; Parts III and IV examine the key human resource practices that comprise the HRM cycle; and Part V addresses some of the developments in communications and employee relations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overly complicated
There is no denying that this book has everything the aspiring human resource manager or theorist needs to know but it is presented in such a style as to be at times virtually unreadable.
Admittedly this is a complex subject but it can be expressed in much clearer terms and indeed has been by other author's on this subject such as Marchington.

In summary this is not a bad book but for someone new to the area or looking for an easily readable summary of the latest developments in this field a more easily digestable text is recommended. This perhaps is one for those people who already have a degree of understanding in this area although it is ironically aimed at those who do not. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Narrow spectrum
Unfortunately I purchased this book with the wrong expectations. It deals with how managers can train their employees within the spectrum of HRD.If you need a text with a more general and contextual outlook on HRD, you need to look elsewhere. If you're an entrepreneur or manager and you're looking for advice in how to manage and derive the best from your employees, then you can give this book a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader
A very well written book on a subject that I often find "boringly" presented.I plan on using it as a complementary text for my graduate course in Instructional Design. It contains enormous amounts of information so well explained in a mere 190 page book. The concepts of training - from needs assessment to evaluation of the program, from principles of learning to concepts of motivation, from facilitating groups, presentation skills, planning and conducting a successful meeting ... the book is truly a gem.The book is unassumingly plain and small - no frills, just plain good and well presented information about organizational learning and training.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Dissapointment!
This book was a total waste of money! The author indicates that the book concentrates on resumes and interviews. This book falls short on the resumes. In fact, the resumes that are included are extremely cheap and probably created by an intern rather then a professional seeking a HR job. The techniques/interview insights are insightful to a certain degree.

I also purchased Real Resumes for HR & Personnel Jobs and was highly impressed. The ISBN is 1-885288-29-8

5-0 out of 5 stars Insights from the other side of the desk....
Too many salespersons (as well as those who supervise them) do not understand the importance of obtaining permission. Specifically, permission to provide information and thereby begin what then becomes a cultivation-solicitation process. So we continue to be inundated with postal and electronic mail we do not want. Telephone calls from persistent strangers invade our personal schedules. And so forth. Why not take the time to learn how best to approach us? How best to obtain our permission to proceed? All they have to do is ask. The same is true of those who recruit, interview, and hire job candidates.

This is one in a series of volumes in the Approved Series, each of which is written from the perspective of "the person on the other side of the desk,"in this instance who buys, interviews, hires, etc. What Schell has done is to interview more than 60 HR professionals to obtain the information which he then carefully organizes within seven Parts:

Effective Job Search Strategies
The HR-Approved Resume
The HR-Approved Cover Letter
HR-Approved Preparation
The HR-Approved Interview
HR-Approved Follow-Up
How to Annoy HR Professionals -- Guaranteed!

NOTE: This last Part all by itself is worth far more than the cost of this book. Reading the previous six Parts first, however, is necessary to derive maximum value.

When concluding his book, Schell shares "Some Final Thoughts" as well as additional information about HR contributors, himself, his research director, and the Approved Series. Those who wish to review -- at no cost, of course -- the full statistical data for all of his surveys are invited to visit the special readers' web page: www.approvedseries.com/readers/hrajir/index.htm. With his reader's permission, of course, Schell will provide periodic updates, special offers, and related information.

As is also true of each of the other volumes in the series, this one really does contain information and counsel of great value to those who sit on BOTH sides of the proverbial desk. That is to say, it will thoroughly prepare HR professionals and others (especially those who are relatively inexperienced) to be much more effective when recruiting, interviewing, and hiring. It can also thoroughly prepare job candidates who participate in that process. Hence the importance of the final Part, How to Annoy HR Professionals -- Guaranteed!

Those who share my high regard for Schell's book are urged to check out Paul Falcone's 96 Great Interview Questions to Ask Before You Hire, Lance A. Berger and Dorothy R. Berger's The Talent Management Handbook: Creating Organizational Excellence by Identifying, Developing, and Promoting Your Best People, Richard Luecke with Peter Cappelli's Harvard Business Review on Hiring and Keeping the Best People, and Bradford D. Product Description
Action Dialogues is a boxed set that includes dialogue book and 52-illustrated issue/wisdom cards. Designed to be a portable dialogue tool in a compact, ready-to-go case, so you can use it anywhere, anytime, any place.
The BOOK provides an introduction to dialogue, a proven process for three kinds of conversations: Exploration on Your Own, One-on-One Conversation, and Small Group Conversation. It provides an innovative approach to help you accelerate organizational change. It brings the powerful process of dialogue, the essential component of involvement, together with a new approach to identify issues standing in the way of progress and achievement. The book serves as a user s guide that includes step-by-step dialogue processes, advice for dialogue leaders, and an inspiration foreword by Frances Hesselbein, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Leader to Leader Institute (Peter F. Drucker Foundation), recounting what we can all learn about dialogue from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The 52 illustrated CARDS (6.5 x 4 ) are grouped into seven areas of organizational influence--leadership, culture, involvement, the business, strategies and measures, staffing, and ownership. The cards name 52 of the most common issues and include corresponding wisdom to consider. They can be passed out in groups of any size to allow participants to literally, put their cards on the table about internal issues they'd rather not bring up aloud. They're not only a brilliant icebreaker for this potent topic but a good first step toward isolating specific areas of strength and weakness within an organization working to put its differences to work to innovate, influence and win.Amazon.com Review
Meant to be used optimally as a part of Debbe Kennedy'sDiversity Breakthrough! Strategic Action series, this is a simple packof 52 glossy cards, each isolating specific roadblocks thatorganizations commonly face when looking to launch a diversityinitiative. The first, for example, reads, "Our leadership team doesnot reflect our stated commitment to inclusion." Another reads,"Resistance to change keeps diversity out of reach."

Grouped intoseven areas--leadership, culture, involvement, the business, strategies and measures, staffing, and ownership--they can be passedout in groups of any size to allow participants to literally "puttheir cards on the table" about internal issues they'd rather notbring up aloud. (And, yes, they do come with a brief but useful user'sguide with a foreword by the Drucker Foundation's Frances Hesselbein.) They're not only a brilliant icebreaker for this potent topic but agood first step toward isolating specific areas of strength andweakness within an organization when it comes to diversity.

Thecards can be used alone or in conjunction with the six booklets in theStrategic Action series, each of which focuses on a crucial phase inwhat author Kennedy, a veteran consultant and a former manager ofEqual Opportunity and human resources at IBM, calls the "imperfectcircle" of change: "Assessment," "Acceptance," "Action,""Accountability," "Achievement," and--you guessed it--"More Action." Each booklet comes with self-assessment tools, concrete actionstrategies to mobilize change, fun and quick action-planningworksheets, and firsthand accounts from leaders at an impressivevariety of organizations, from big companies to small nonprofits, thatexplains how they met the challenge of walking-the-talk withdiversity. Each concise, 64-page booklet is as adaptable to anorganization-wide initiative or a small group effort as it is to asingle individual's nighttime reading and enrichment (whereorganizational change, after all, often begins).

Managers, consultants, and trainers can use these Action Dialogue cardsindependently as an assessment tool before launching a diversityinitiative or in conjunction with the Strategic Action bookletsas add-ons. The cards are really the touchstone in a highly integratedprogram that demystifies diversity management and accords it theseriousness it deserves.--Timothy Murphy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun tool that really gets people talking!
Great tool! The cards really work to help people talk about inclusivity and the issues that people don't want to say out loud in a group. I was surprised how fast people really got into it. The book has a very simpleprocess to follow. Later, I used it myself and almost had fun figuring outwhat is wrong with our business environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much more than a book!
Debbe Kennedy's newly released "Action Dialogues" is a BREAKTHROUGH inand of itself. I say this because I feel that Debbe has broken new ground and is helping to shape the future of how we will usebooks as tools, not just as repositories of ideas. It is so much more thanabook. It isa Tool, Reference, a source of Inspiration and a Catalystfor change in organizations, not to mention that the process laid out iscustomizable, flexible, accessible, fun and action-oriented. The cardsthemselves are amazing - they convey the spirit of diversity and inclusionthrough their simple design and powerful use of graphics and quotes. Thecategories(leadership, culture, involvement, staffing & development, strategies & measures and business) listed on the bottom corner of eachcard let you perform a quick assessment of where the balance of your issuesreside. My initial use of the tool confirmed my gut-feel --- and helped mecraft the key message that I wanted to share with our leadership team. Iwas able to communicate what was working, what wasn't working and what wecould do about it!

When I first opened the box and began working with thebook and the companion card deck, I instantly felt empowered to takeaction. I have now used "Action Dialogues" to prepare for andexecute a dialogue with a small group of leaders focused on a key culturechange project. In addition to testing this powerful new tool in thecorporate setting, I have also found it to be a great way to openconversations in both non-profit and public sector environments. In oneinstance, a particular card and the associated issu and quote really hit anerve with a collegue who works for a city in Northern California. We usedthat one issue to build around it a focused dialogue session. There are nocomplex theories that need to be grasped or detailed preparation. If youhave a issue that needs to be discussed and you have been putting it offbecause you don't feel comfortable facilitating the necessary dialogue-don't wait. Buy this book. It will take you by the hand and show you stepby step how to be successful and get busy changing the world!

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Get to Work!
You don't need more meetings or brainstorming sessions to identify what needs to be done and what the issues are. Leaders of the future need to enable themselves and their teams to work successfully among people withdifferences.Debbe Kennedy has heard it all, collected the best ideas andsolutions, and has prepared this easy to use and understand tool kit. Itallows you to get to work, start talking and build a deeper understandingof people. Most managers and human resource professionals do not know howto tackle the subject of diversity and inclusion and let their ownsensitivities and lack of knowledge and experience get in the way.TheAction Dialogues will more than get you started and keep you talking andthinking and doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Debbe Kennedy continues producing tools that work!
I found this tool -- not just a book -- to be useful far beyond bringing diversity and leadership to the workplace. The structure is straightforward. The knowledge and process to unlock talent in my companygot my interest. The results made me a believer. Leadership isdemonstrated from a diversity of perspectives. Thank God for authors andleaders like Debbe Kennedy, Joel Barker and Francis Husselbein for cuttingthrough the rhetoric and giving us real help. ... Read more
