Product Description
The lives and careers of Warner Brothers’ screen legends Joan Blondell, Nancy Coleman, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Glenda Farrell, Kay Francis, Ruby Keeler, Andrea King, Priscilla Lane, Joan Leslie, Ida Lupino, Eleanor Parker, Ann Sheridan, Alexis Smith, and Jane Wyman are the topic of this book. Some achieved great success in film and other areas of show business, but others failed to get the breaks or became victims of the studio system's sometimes unpleasant brand of politics. The personal and professional obstacles that each actress encountered are here set out in detail, often with comments from the actresses who granted interviews with the author and from those people who knew them best on and off the movie set. A filmography is included for each of the fifteen. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Women Are Lacking!!
The title is intriguing and even more intriguing is that there are some ladies that are rarely written about. Those ladies include Eleanor Parker, Alexis Smith, Andrea King, Nancy Coleman, Priscilla Lane, Glenda Farrell and Joan Leslie. But this is an expensive book that lacks good pictures of the ladies and almost nothing new about the ones that have previously been written about. The Warners ladies missing include Patricia Neal, Ruth Roman, Janis Paige, Faye Emerson, Dorothy Malone, Virginia Mayo and a whole lot more.

Each lady is given one picture (in some cases not even a good picture) with the exception of Ann Sheridan, who rates three photos. The stories of their careers rarely flesh out their lives away from the camera. There is very little about them after their film careers ended. I never got a feel for what each lady was really like other than "she worked with (so and so) and liked (so and so) and her favorite movie was (so and so)", etc.

The filmography for each lady includes a little bit of TV work. It would seem that if the author is going to name TV credits, then why not all the work the lady has done, not just a scattering of titles. It's interesting that Andrea King is included when she only was at the WB studio for 18 months and others who worked for the Warner Brothers for many years are left out.

This book is lacking in so many areas--a major disappointment. There is no in-depth story of any of these fifteen WB ladies. I guess it's better than nothing, but not nearly as good as it could have been.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, alas
It's hard to take too seriously a book of this title that includes Nancy Coleman but not the actress whose early '30s work for Warners (Three on a Match, Strange Love of Molly Louvain, etc.) is among that studio's best, Ann Dvorak. Clearly an effort by the author to remind us of the existence of these talented, spirited stars at a time when cultural memory threatens to forget them, The Women of Warner Brothers covers the 1930s and '40s and includes such well-known stars as Olivia de Havilland and Ann Sheridan, along with lesser lights such as Glenda Farrell and Andrea King.

The writing is workmanlike, if sometimes too casual in the manner of movie zines (starting a sentence with "Oh yeah" may not endear the author to all of his readers). There's nothing particularly new here, but the book is useful as a one-stop source for longer profiles of its subjects and their films than can be found elsewhere (excluding stars like Bette Davis whose careers have been written up in exhaustive detail). And the lack of Dvorak is at least partially compensated for by the inclusion of such vanishing worthies as Joan Leslie, Andrea King, Eleanor Parker, and Alexis Smith. Fans of these actresses will find this a diverting read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Look at Classic Leading Ladies
Daniel Bubbeo has written an entertaining and informative look at the classic actresses who made Warner Brothers. Bubbeo has an easy prose that invties the reader to learn about this wonderful time in cinema history. This is an invaluable book for anyone interested in classic films as well as the history of the Warner Bros. Studio.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well- written and well-researched book on classic actresses
The book is well-written and well-researched. It presents entertaining chapters on 15 leading WB actresses from the 30s and 40s. I learned about stars I was previously not familiar with like Nancy Coleman. The book presents interesting information not previously published about many of these stars. I would have liked to see the chapters on each actress be somewhat longer. Some of the more interesting aspects of the actresses' lives could have been more fully developed, especially their private lives as opposed to their film careers. Instead, "snippets" are presented in some cases. I would have liked to see more about the lives of the stars in their later years. However, I understand that the publisher limited the length of the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
If you're looking for a source where you can practice many example reads, this book isn't for you - Elaine Clark's book is even though some of examples are rather dated. But if you're looking for a breakdown of (dare I say) insider procedure and industry protocol, the Thomas/Rofe work is invaluable. What ways (and how many times) to contact an agent if you're demo hasn't been acted upon? They'll tell you. Ways not to antagonize your fellow artist when doing multiples? They'll tell you. Instruction on what to do/not to do at auditions and (hopefully) subsequent bookings? They'll tell you that too.

Different books are published for different purposes. It's not the first book I'd buy but it's in my 'ready reference' briefcase. This is the one that proverbially-speaking guides me as what time to wake up and be ready for school, what to wear, and how to act when the teacher calls on me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and well rounded
I thought this was an interesting and informative read.I say it was well rounded because it cover many aspects of voice-over and included input from other experts.I liked the CD that came with it.If you are beginning voice talent, this book is especially good. If you are a seasoned professional, tidbits in the book are always a good thing to add to your knowledge base.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to break into a lucrative albeit competitive market
If you have a rich voice and a winning style, go to the next level of development and market that voice with Voice for Hire: Launch and Maintain a Lucrative Career in Voice-Overs. Hear actual voice-over demos that open doors in the cds accompanying an in-depth guide from a voice artist and voice coach who join forces to tell how to break into a lucrative albeit competitive market. The step-by-step approach covers everything from promos and commercials to demo reels and job-winning auditions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Randy And Peter Tell It Like It Is!!
I have had the distinct pleasure of working with Randy Thomas throughout her career, in both radio and television, currently on Entertainment Tonight: The most-watched entertainment news program in the world. It is that journey of experience that she has brilliantly penned, with Peter Rofé in Voice for Hire: Launch and Maintain a Lucrative Career in Voice-Overs.This book is compelling, insightful and interestingly told.

Author, Timothy Wehr's review that the book "contains little more than some insights about how the business works - not how to "do" it." totally misses the mark. The book's own description states, "There is no single or definitive path to making money in voice-overs, although there are certain trends and truths that can inform your career."Randy gives the reader, looking to get into the business, or make it to the next level in voice-overs, an astute heads-up as to what to expect.

There is no realistic "how-to" voice-over book in the marketplace, because every situation is different. If you are born with the instrument and the desire to use it, Voice for Hire: Launch and Maintain a Lucrative Career in Voice-Overs helps teach you what you can do, and where you can go to learn how to play that instrument the best YOU can and where and what you can expect at home and on the road.

I've ready virtually every book out there on the field of voiceovers and Randy's book is a positive, currently relevant and inspiring book for those who are trying to do the just what the book title states.Great job, Randy and Peter.Congratulations on an honest evaluation of the business and a great, helpful read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but...
I read the book hoping to discover the real inside secrets of how to "Launch and Maintain a Lucrative Career in Voice-Overs." Unfortunately, it contains little more than some insights about how the business works - not how to "do" it. While I was disappointed, it did help to spur my interest in the business and provided some facts (dispelling some myths) about the market for voice-overs and who can enter and be successful at it.

The book generally lacked the depth necessary to be of real value. It will certainly spark one's interest, but other resources will be necessary to move beyond that point. Randy is certainly one of the most talented voice-over artists on the scene today - she is just not a talented writer. Too bad! It would have been great to learn more from someone so successful in the business. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift for teachers
I hope the editors of this book check their Amazon page from time to time so I can thank them for putting together this book.I've only recently started teaching playwriting and one thing I knew I didn't want to do was make students endure cold reads of their work and their fellow students' scattershot critiques.I also knew I wanted to keep students as far away as possible from the crappy textbooks I've read ("...you cannot write a word until you have a premise!"...)As the other reviewer said, these editors have collected thoughtful, generous essays by playwrights who teach very differently from one another, but all from the heart.A tremendously stimulating read for playwriting teachers, and for writers in any genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I've been looking for
As a playwright and a teacher, I have often found and read books on both sides of the spectrum.I've read many a book on playwriting, and I've read books on teaching. For the first time in my experience, I've found a book of essays on the art of teaching playwrights. Not only is this an incredibly well thought out series of essays, it covers a variety of opinions and feelings on the topic.

The most interesting part of this book comes from the fact that, in many cases, these authors disagree. Some of the writers talk about teaching structure in their classes.Others are disgusted by the idea of teaching structure- instead leaning in the direction of finishing the play in whatever way it desires to be written. The opinions expressed in this book are simultaneously profound, interesting, and entertaining.I highly recommend this book to playwrighting teachers, teachers who write plays, and playwrights who have never taught a day in their lives. It's wonderful. ... Product Description
In the most comprehensive biography written about the great illusionist yet, author Ken Silverman, who has won both a Pulitzer and a Bancroft prize, draws on never-before-used scrapbooks, personal diaries, court transcripts and hundreds of unpublished notes and letters collected from around the world to reveal a far richer, more personal view of Houdini than ever before. While Silverman focuses on the magic and miraculous escapes that made Houdini a legend and the most celebrated, highest-paid performer of his day, he also delves deeply into Houdini's fascinating personal life. He explores Houdini's many friendships with politicians and celebrities like Jack Dempsey, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Jack London, the Astors and others. He looks into his traumatic encounters with anti-Semitism; his close-knit family; his strange and troubled relationship with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; and his bitter war against spiritualism. He also uncovers new revelations about Houdini's secret affair with the widow of a famous American writer.Amazon.com Review
Silverman's engaging biography catalogs the life of Harry Houdini, bornEhrich Weiss, who made a career out of his capacity to amaze. Havingdeveloped conjuring skills and an ability to wriggle free of handcuffs, ropesand manacles, Houdini elaborated his tricks into theatrical set pieces thatmade him famous--stunts like escaping from a strait jacket while danglinghead down from a skyscraper, or from a wooden packing crate submerged inwater. Silverman's meticulously researched book reveals other sides to thegreat illusionist too. Houdini collected a library of books on magic, wrotebooks himself, exposed shyster psychics whose tricks he could easily match, and was a friend to JackLondon, SarahBernhardt and Sir Arthur ConanDoyle. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars conflict of interest
The author had a conflict of interest while writing this book.On the one hand, as a former magician, he didn't want to give away any trade "secrets."But as a writer he had the responsibility not to short-change the reader by omitting important details.I found the second half of the book that covered Houdini's bitter relationship with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the exposing of fraudulant mediums much more interesting than the first half where Silverman "kept the secrets."How can the reader fully appreciate Houdini's performances if the preparations that went into them are omitted?Besides, there are few magic "secrets" left to be guarded as most have already been published--see Jim Steinmeyer's "Hiding the Elephant" for a recent example.I can understand Silverman's decision to abide by "the code," but it does detract from the book's appeal, hence only three stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Houdini Escapes!!!
Silverman's biography on Mr Erich Weiss (Houdini), in my opinion, is the best out there on the bookshelf. It's a little long and dry
at parts, but it's packed with interesting information about a mystery man and the life he lived. It's a wonderful insight on his life and the time he lived in. Much recommended for the magic buff, historian, or inquiring mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative - Yes.But, boring
I bought this book for my father, who is a huge magic-buff, and recalls hearing about Houdini while growing up.

Of course, I knew then that my father never reads books, and my hopes that he would break that pattern and read this one were lost. So, I took it home and read it. Er, read most of it.

I enjoyed the historical aspects of the story, but I couldn't get past the fact that the manner in which the book is written was less than enthralling. I just couldn't stay interested! I wanted to, I wanted to!!

If you're interested in learning about Houdini, I'd find something smaller to being your foray - like a three-fold brochure or something.

Houdini ROCKED! This book doesn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revisiting a Childhood Hero
From the time I could count my age on my fingers, Houdini fascinated me; I read everything regarding him that I could get my hands on. So I already knew a lot of what Silverman mentions in Houdini!!!

However, this book actually managed to surprise me. First of all, most of what I read from the ages of seven to fifteen were biographies written in the "Boy's Life" mode, heroic tales which read more like dime novels than actual biography. Not only does Silverman present an accurate, well-researched account of Houdini's life, he also accounts for many of the myths surrouding Houdini, even in some cases explaining how Houdini himself contributed to some of the confusion. Because the book is so even-handed, I walked away from the book still admiring my childhood hero.

Second, Silverman brings a magician's perspective to this biography. He describes at length the presentation and details of the effects that Houdini accomplished, such as the Metamorphoses, the Milk Can Escape, the Chinese Water Torture, and numerous jail and handcuff escapes. However, he does not "give away the store" by spilling the secrets to the man's life. Sure, some of Houdini's secrets are now known, others not, but Silverman refrains from writing a kiss-and-tell book, and I had to admire that.

Lastly, Silverman went a lot further than I've ever seen in describing both the man and his times. While I've known for years that Houdini lived in a very exciting time, Silverman portrays him as truly a man for his age. From Houdini's interactions with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Theodore Roosevelt, H.P. Lovecraft, Sarah Bernhardt, and Hollwood's silent film stars, to his involvement with aviation, spiritualism, movie making, and more, Silverman makes a case that Houdini brought together much of what first made the modern age modern.

Houdini!!! did not perpetuate the same tall tales that all the movies and Houdini himself put forwrd. Instead, this biography exposed Houdini for what he was--a physically accomplished, master showman, sometimes ego-driven, yet principled man who always struggled to accomplish more.

Given the wide array of misinformation that exists about Harry Houdini, this book outshines the rest. Quite enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
I've read every biography on Harry Houdini and this is without question the best of the lot. Certainly it is the most comprehensive and professional. Silverman has not just recycled information gleaned from oldbios (as Ruth Brandon did in The Life & Many Deaths of Harry Houdini);he has done fresh research and has come up with amazing new facts andfacets of Houdini's career and character that have never appeared anywhereelse. I've read this book 3 times and each time I learn something new. Ifyou're looking for a Houdini biography, this is the one to buy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps explain all those exotic filmworld terms like best boy, gaffer, and grip
This book was fun to read. Written in an upbeat fashion primarily for young people contemplating working in the movie industry in production-related jobs, the book describes these jobs in a direct and breezy way, taking care to define the terms I noted in the title of this review (and many others). So the book also can be interesting to anyone who has a general interest in movies, movie making, and the movie business.

I was especially impressed about the job descriptions in the "special effects" area because the techniques themselves are also described, adding to my knowledge of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick!!
This book was started and finished in one day. A very easy read full of good information on a lot of film career types. I was disappointed in the book, however, because I was hoping (as per the review) for a basic pay scale on each job, but only a couple even mentioned it. It was slightly upsetting, but was an okay worth while read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone interested in movies
When you're looking for a way into what you know will be a competitive career, it's good to know there's so many options available. With this book, I was able to line up my background to find the right point of entry. Additionally, it really helped with learning all the jargon of the film industry. It gives you a real insiders feel. The writing breezes along with humor, insight and lots of practical advice. I'm always buying copies for my friends and I go back to it often just to refresh.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most helpful book I have ever read
This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn about all the jobs that are found on a film set. It gave me more options and helped me find what job is right for me. It helped me realize that you can start small and end big, and I recomend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide to Spec Writing
I have read a ton of TV writing books and this one does a fantastic job of talking about what executives are looking for in a spec.It is NOT a book on how to write, it is a book on all the tricks of the trade to make your spec read like a professional sample. It gives great insight into how to view your script through the eyes of professional readers and TV executives.I spent a year reading scripts at a top agency and 80% of them did not even follow the basics covered in this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why?
Why would you buy a book on writing written by non-writers?Save your money. Those who can, do.Those who've never even tried write sham books about how to do it.I'm a writer who's been working steadily in network TV since I came out of the WB workshop many years ago.We were taught by talented guest television writers who came in each week, not the program administrators. That would be like learning how to have sex from a nun. Honestly, the very existence of this book makes me mad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
I found Starting Your Television Writing Career a very helpful book.

If you want to get into television writing, then Abby Finer is the person to learn from.

It is to the point, and it is obvious this is written by a pro with first-hand knowledge of the industry.

This book is a great start and I certainly hope the author decides to come out with a volume 2.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lame!Nothing Like I Had Hoped...Save Your Money!!
I bought this book because I was interested in finding out some tips on getting my script accepted by the decision makers of the Warner Bros. Writer's Workshop. After all, those of us considering such a workshop already know how to write a script.

Yet this book was a weak attempt at showing someone how to write a television script. And it didn't do a good job at that! There are MUCH BETTER books on television script structure for both comedy sitcoms and drama series.Anyone reading any information on television writing for the first time would be SEVERELY MISGUIDED by taking the information from this book and attempting to apply it successfully to a television script.

But again, why is this book even about the structure of a television script? It SHOULD be about how to break into the Warner Bros. Writer's Workshop. It should have addressed what kind of writing the workshop accepts and which they turn down.It would help to know what those who are getting turned down all the time are doing wrong! That's what they should be talking about...How to GET IN!

PASS ON THIS BOOK!IT'S A TOTAL RIP OFF!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The book consists of: 51 pages of overview of how you write a good spec script and what you do with it; 49 pages of a comedy outline and script; 90 pages of a drama outline and script; and 27 pages of interviews with established TV writers.

I found the overview frustrating. Granted I'm not the best audience for this book, because it's written for nonprofessionals who want to get into the business, and I've written for TV. But I have read TV writing books that taught me stuff, particularly the brief but superb pamphlet the WGA has on its site, Writing for Episodic TV. I agree with the things the overview says. The problem is it says them generally instead of specifically. It gave me the impression that it was written by someone who sat in on meetings with experienced writers and then wrote down -- quickly -- what they said. In fact, the authors each have one television credit on the IMDb, are TV pro's, and run the Warner Bros TV Workshop (though their author bios don't actually say they are TV writers). But who can say in 57 pages all you need to know to write TV? You can say more or less what you need to do, but not how.

The interviews were fine, but they were similarly more directed at end results than processes. Not, "How do you come up with...?" and "How do you deal with...?" but "What was your first sample script and how did you get someone to read it?" I found them less compelling than the yards of interviews the WGA has up on its site.

I would also have found it more interesting if each interviewee was answering different questions.

The bulk of the book, though, is the scripts. And I gotta ask: what's the point of putting one comedy script and one drama script into a book? You need to read dozens of TV scripts, not one each of drama and comedy. And there are dozens to read on the Net -- see my right sidebar, "Links to downloadable scripts."

So, in all, I was disappointed. I really wanted to like this book.

One interesting point though: I did notice that this book uses different terminology than I've heard. For example, it says a typical scene will have three or four "story beats." That's a different use of the word "beat" than I've run across. In my experience it's rare to have more than two beats in a scene; usually it's one per scene or even per sequence. The book defines "act break" as "the place in the script where the action reaches its highest point." I've only heard "act break" used as a synonym for "act out," a term the book leaves undefined. And I'd never heard of a "clam," which apparently is an overused trendy phrase (e.g. "Talk to the hand"). It may be helpful to know these usages, so it might be worth checking out the glossary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional
This is a must read for anyone in technical theatre or has interest in the Theatre at all.I have selected this book to use in class to explore and discuss the many oppurtunities that technical theatre holds and to learn what skills are necessary.I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basics
This is a good book for those just starting out in the industry to get a feel for what these titled individuals of the production staff do. Even I, a "seasoned" pro, learned more than a thing or two.

If I had one criticism, it would be that the salary/wages information is not specific enough; I understand that it's hard to gather this data, but as someone entering into the full-time staff world for the first time, it's hard to know what I should expect when negotiating.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to locate on-the-job training as an intern to break into the industry

Careers in Technical Theater could have been a feature in our Arts section, but is reviewed here for its overview of the American professional theatre's job market opportunities - a rich listing of opportunities for any who would work in the theatre. It surveys everything from how to be a Broadway theatre technician to becoming a sound designer, makeup artist, company manager or consultant, surveying job duties, how to locate on-the-job training as an intern to break into the industry, and how to narrow a career focus to specialize in a desirable area. As such this is a top pick for any collection strong in career guides, whether it be a public lending library or a performing arts collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Overview
This is an excellent guide for anyone wanting to pursue a career, or just generally interested in theatre, "behind the scenes". It offers very well-rounded descriptions of the different types of jobs one can explore working backstage. Each type of job has its own section with compelete job descriptions, culled from a variety of working professionals. The descriptions include what one can expect in different working conditions and even what might be expected concerning pay scale. It is a very realistic view of a life in the theatre and does a particularly good job of painting the diverse conditions that exist within the American theatre landscape. It offers lots of additional sources for researching ones further interests, via publications, websites, etc. It also offers some very helpful advice about finding college and university programs, or if that is even advisable. The writer obviously has a wide body of experience and has presented the information in a very succinct and engaging manner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tommy Lightfoot Garrett, Canyon News Editor Loves This Book
"Reading Anna Lee: Memoir of a Career on General Hospital and in Film" is like picking up a book on world history, with the excitement of Hollywood dashed inside for added flavor. Knowing Anna for decades so well, I knew that her book would be honest and exciting. The lady was one of the most fascinating people I've ever met or worked with. Her life was filled with a richness of history, from birth to the time of her death. No other leading lady had worked as long in her career. Not even Hepburn worked to age 90.

Anna's favorite actress and one of her best friends, Maureen O'Hara, wrote the foreword. Maureen is a lovely person, distinguished actress and beloved lady on the screen in her own right. O'Hara was perhaps John Wayne's most favorite leading lady, though Constance Towers would be his most beautiful. O'Hara speaks fondly and warmly of Anna and talks about working with her as if she'd worked with the Queen of England. Anna, born to British aristocracy, was never a snob. Lee was a lady with a great sense of humor. Friends and costars from her "General Hospital" decades speak warmly of her in the book. Her family, including beloved son Jeffrey, speak lovingly of being raised by this strong and determined woman.

Anna, however, is honest, especially as she talks about her relationship with her daughters being at times difficult, but that she never stopped loving them. They never stopped loving her, as well.

Lee's life and career have never been rivaled by any other great stars. She was an icon and a beloved actress. But her book brings her life together for fans and friends who thought they knew the real Anna Lee. Her co-author, the incredibly talented Barbara Roisman Cooper, is honest and forthcoming in both praise and truthful representations of Anna. Cooper worked with the legendary star before she died and then spent over a year finishing up the story and interviewing people who knew and worked with Anna.

Each person interviewed tells a different Lee story; so many, they couldn't all be put in the book. But each of us who were interviewed learned a lot more by reading this book, because we all had different experiences with this great lady who graced our movie screens for decades, and then our television screen for several more.

A book well worth reading. I give it five stars. I only wish I could give it ten. It's unforgettable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Lady
I had the pleasure of knowing Anna Lee back in the early 60's. I knew several years ago that she was working on her memoir and I was eagerly looking forward to reading it and I certainly was not disappointed!

The book gives an interesting view of the British movie industry in the 30's and beyond with some great "snapshots" of Doug Fairbanks Jr., Merle Oberon and Vivien Leigh.

Anyone interested in film will find this book a great history lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a rich read -- a visit to the past and around the world.
I knew that I would enjoy this book because I'm a huge General Hospital fan, and I love memoirs written by women in Hollywood. The book didn't disappoint on either count. What I didn't plan on, however, was feeling as if I'd traveled the globe and been touched by the humanity of war.Anna Lee's life was indeed full and I didn't know the half of it until I curled up on my porch swing and devoured this lovingly written book by Barbara Roisman Cooper. You can find my interview with the author on www.soaps.com/generalhospital/news, in fact, if you'd like to learn her insights into the work process with the lovely Ms. Lee before her passing.
A must read for all soap fans, war buffs and global travellors! ... Read more

Product Description
Among Hollywood’s child stars are some talented children, normal and pleasant who find fame in film. Margaret O'Brien is one; her career began in 1941. The fresh-faced moppet quickly became a sensation and won the 1944 Academy Award for Outstanding Child Actress. As Adele in Jane Eyre (1944) and Beth in Little Women (1949), Margaret endeared herself to millions. Despite the strain of growing up on screen, O'Brien continues to perform today.

This reference work details O’Brien’s remarkable and varied career on stage, screen, and television: it includes a biography and a complete listing of all her film, radio, stage, and television appearances, as well as references to her in magazines and newspapers. Each entry includes complete production information, as well as reviews and behind-the-scenes commentary. Included are forewords by Robert Young and O'Brien herself, who provided much of the information in this book. Dozens of photos, including many from O'Brien's personal collection, illustrate the text and show the varied stages of a career that includes both famous roles and famous friendships. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Margaret O'Brien: A Career Chronicle and Biography
This book was disappointing for biography as it was very brief. It is, however, a great pictorial history of her career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Little Margaret
This book was excellent as a chronicle for the movies of Margaret O'Brien.
I really liked the input by of several of her costars,Wallace Berry was very enlightning!
I felt the biography part of the book was a little lacking. There was nothing much about her daughter! It would have been nice to see what happened after she grew up in a little more detail.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough!
For the price of this book I really thought it would be jam-packed with information, sadly it lacked this and I was left with more questions about her life than answers. It was very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A companion for Garbo
Remember "the films of" series of books on famous actors? Lotsa pictures? Every film listed in chronological order? That's the design of this much belated book (copyright 2000). And it comes with the direct assistance of Margaret O'Brien herself who wrote the Foreword.

After a brief biography, each of her films is presented, the cast and crew listed, the plot summarized with lots of behind-the-scenes revelations included. And talk about comprehensive! I was unaware (tho, hardly surprised) of the two or three movie shorts done during the war. But did you know she did a Japanese film when she was about 15 or 16? Much later, a couple films in Peru? A little-known Disney film (with Jenny Agutter)? And, fairly recently, a couple indie films (ones which I plan to avoid).

This book also includes abbreviated listings of her stage work and radio performances, and a pretty comprehensive listing of her television appearances.

Maybe because of Margaret's involvement, I felt the information was carefully sifted to avoid offending her. As an admirer, I didn't mind that. It's much more important that this compilation and updated biography become available.

Look at that face! How could you resist this book? I bet the movie critic of the 1940s James Agee couldn't have if he were alive today. And based on his reviews of Margaret's movies, he would have rested his copy of it against his copy of "The Films of Greta Garbo".

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for a wonderful child star
This book has everything about the wonderful little actress, Margaret O'Brien. Not only does it have a biographical section, but details every film she every made with a complete listing of cast, crew, synopis, a behind the scenes look at the making of the film and comments from costars and O'Brien herself. The author has put a lot of research into this book and it deserves to be read. ... Read more

Product Description
In an expanded and updated follow up to his popular, first book, The Business of Acting: Learn the Skills You Need to Build the Career You Want, talent manager Brad Lemack offers both young, new-to-the-business and working actors a vital perspective on the changing landscape in which they seek to launch and grow (or to reinvent) their professional careers. The New Business of Acting: How to Build a Career in a Changing Landscape teaches actors how to be smart, proactive and strategic throughout their career journeys. Lemack teaches actors the critical, non-performance skills they need to build the careers they want and how to apply those skills in positive, professional and productive ways. The new book explores the revolution taking place in how business is conducted and how those dramatic changes impact how actors must conduct the business of their careers.

The New Business of Acting builds on the lessons taught in the first book, while addressing how to apply those lessons to the digital and economic landscape that is the new business of acting.

Key chapters explore the changing roles of agents and managers, the new demands on casting directors in the new landscape, the importance of creating, protecting and honoring your brand, emotional, physical and fiscal fitness in a challenging economy, and guidelines for seeking out and getting a head shot that fits the frame of the new business.

Readers will learn the art of managing expectations, a required skill in knowing how to act (and when not to) on the global Internet stage of self-submission opportunities, and, perhaps most important for the young actor, those about to or just entering the business will discover what they must know to make a healthy, happy and empowered transition from student of the performing arts to wanting-to-be-working, professional actor.

Readers will also learn how to create and launch an action plan for career success that teaches them how to effectively and strategically use the tools introduced in the book, and how to be a smart actor implementing their plan all along their journey.

It's not about talent and performance; it s about perspective, planning and process.
