Product Description
A photo of a secret CIA prison. A map designed to help visitors reach Malibu’s notoriously inaccessible public beaches. Guidebooks to factories, prisons, and power plants in upstate New York. An artificial reef fabricated from 500 tons of industrial waste. These are some of the more than one hundred projects represented in Experimental Geography, a groundbreaking
collection of visual research and mapmaking from the past ten years.

Experimental Geography explores the distinctions between geographical study and artistic experience of the earth, as well as the juncture where the two realms collide (and possibly make a new field altogether). This lavishly illustrated book features more than a dozen maps; artwork by Francis Alÿs, Alex Villar, and Yin Xiuzhen; and recent projects by The Center for Land Use Interpretation, the Raqs Media Collective, and the Center for Urban Pedagogy.

The collection is framed by essays by bestselling author Trevor Paglen, Jeffrey Kastner, and editor Nato Thompson. ... Read more

Product Description

A comprehensive survey of the technology of mapping and its relationship to the battle against disease, this look at medical mapping advances a radical argument that maps are not merely representations of spatial realities but a way of thinking about relations between viral and bacterial communities, human hosts, and the environments in which diseases flourish. The history of medical mapping is traced—from its growth in the 19th century during an era of trade and immigration to its renaissance in the 1990s during a new era of globalization. Referencing maps older than John Snow's famous cholera maps of London in the mid-19th century, this survey pulls from the plague maps of the 1600s, while addressing current issues concerning the ability of GIS technology to track diseases worldwide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of charts and detail throughout
What do early medical maps have to do with modern GIS maps? How can patterns of diseases from the past relate to those in modern times created by GIS? Dr. Koch is a geographer, bioethicist, and here explores relationships between medicine and mapmaking from paper-based to computer-based today. Chapters follow early epidemics, mapmaking processes and myths, public health and medical developments, and more as it examines those who made maps, cartography issues, and medical history. Plenty of charts and detail throughout.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Art and Science of Cartography, by a master practitioner
I have this book and have perused it and keep it as a reference, but,I am acquainted with Raisz, and must say that if you don't have his landforms map of north america then you are missing the single best map I have ever seen.
My landforms course at Penn State was taught entirely from this map, it was the text!
With a scientist's understanding and an artist's hand, his mapsare pen and ink illustrations of landscape, mindfull of the forces operating beneath the surface. Those forces that 'constructed' them and the eroding forces above that have 'destructed' them.

Find this map and,
Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't know, but his previous book was very good.
I haven't read this book, but since you don't have any reviews on the page, I thought you might be interested in what this author did previously. He wrote "General Cartography" in the 1940's, apparently a text book (as I guess this one is, from its title), but very readable, very well illustrated, and entertaining if you have any interest at all in the subject. It covered just about anything you would want to know about maps, including the history of mapmaking (such as maps by the South Sea islanders made of shells on a reed mesh), map projections (accurately defined with no mathematics), how surveys are done, map lettering, all sorts of special maps, cartograms, and even the tools you need to draw maps (I can't tell you everything it covered because I lent it to my nephew). I only hope this book is nearly as good. ... Read more

Product Description
The transformation of the mediaeval European image of the world in the period following the great discoveries of the 15th and 16th centuries is the subject of this work. The first studies deal specifically with the emergence of the concept of the terraqueous globe. In the following pieces Dr Randles looks at the advances in Portuguese navigation and cartography that helped sailors overcome the obstacles to the circumnavigation of Africa and the crossing of the Atlantic, and at the impact of the discoveries on European culture and science. Other articles are concerned with Portuguese naval artillery, and with attempts to classify the indigenous societies of the newly-discovered lands and to map the interior of Africa. ... Read more

Product Description
Islamic economics in practice, or economic policies supported by self-identified Islamic groups, has varied throughout its long history. Traditional Islamic concepts having to do with economics include, zakat - the "taxing of certain goods, such as harvest, with an eye to allocating these taxes to expenditures that are also explicitly defined, such as aid to the needy.Gharar - "the interdiction of chance that is, of the presence of any element of uncertainty, in a contract (which excludes not only insurance but also the lending of money without participation in the risks), These concepts, like others in Islamic law and jurisprudence, came from the "prescriptions, anecdotes, examples, and words of the Prophet, all gathered together and systematized by commentators according to an inductive, casuistic method. Sometimes other sources such as al-urf, (the custom), al-aql (reason) or al-ijma (consensus of the jurists) were employed. In addition, Islamic law has developed areas of law that correspond to secular laws of contracts and torts. ... Product Description
This is a major new study of visual representations of Europe, from the classical world to the present day, in maps, icons, the arts and graphic images of all kinds. Europe has been variously represented as the demi-goddess Europa, a bull, a horse, a son of Noah, a Magus, a queen, and the Empress of the World. This richly illustrated book charts how these visualizations of the continent have altered over time; how they interact with changing ideas of the extent and nature of Europe in relation to the other continents; and how these images have influenced and been influenced by the 'reality' of Europe. Spanning the ages from the Ancient Greeks to the European Union, this history of three millennia of Europe and its representations is an important contribution to ongoing debates about the nature of European identity. ... "Certain to be the standard reference for all subsequent scholarship."—John Noble Wilford, New York Times Book Review, on the History of Cartography series

"The maps in this book provide an evocative picture of how indigenous peoples view and represent their worlds. They illuminate not only questions of material culture but also the cognitive systems and social motivations that underpin them" (from the introduction).

Although they are often rendered in forms unfamiliar to Western eyes, maps have existed in most cultures. In this latest book of the acclaimed History of Cartography, contributors from a broad variety of disciplines collaborate to describe and address the significance of traditional cartographies. Whether painted on rock walls in South Africa, chanted in a Melanesian ritual, or fashioned from palm fronds and shells in the Marshall Islands, all indigenous maps share a crucial role in representing and codifying the spatial knowledge of their various cultures. Some also serve as repositories of a group's sacred or historical traditions, while others are exquisite art objects.

The indigenous maps discussed in this book offer a rich resource for disciplines such as anthropology, archaeology, art history, ethnology, geography, history, psychology, and sociology. Copious illustrations and carefully researched bibliographies enhance the scholarly value of this definitive reference.

Product Description
To ‘everyday consumers’ of information who use contemporary communication devices the ‘not-real’ is experienced almost every time they turn on a television, watch a movie or access some information via the Web. They are instantly taken to another world, and they can explore another reality. Professional designers and cartographers use the not-real (representations that range from paper maps of fantasy to computer-generated virtual reality) to deliver information about real, imaginary or non-human / non-physical geographies. In many cases the map metaphor is employed to provide representations of imaginary or non-human / non-physical geographies and users can use existing map reading skills to interpret these representations of ‘different’ geographies. This book addresses the many areas where different geographies are being specified and then represented using the map metaphor. It provides examples of new theories being developed and practical mapping applications that are used to inform about or analyse the elements of these geographies. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Useful
I had to use this for a computer mapping class, except everything from the book was covered in the professors lab handouts in an even more logical and understandable fashion. Why professors must insist you buy the text book and then provide you with resources that render it obsolete is a mystery. This book was not cheap I caution you to be very careful before buying it you might not need it at all. As for if you have to rely on the book it's not terrible but there's nothing in the book that does not scream "generic textbook" if your skilled at utilizing text books it will help you, if not it will hinder you. Don't expect to get too much from it, some of it's instruction were very poorly written and you will need guidance from the professor to get through if it's your first GIS course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its good
The book is good. It came in good condition. I have no complains. Its as good as new one. Happy this time :)arpraku

3-0 out of 5 stars not that great
I think it's kind of ironic that this cartography book isn't in color. There's a whole chapter on color and it's in black and white. There's a few pages in the middle of the book with maps in color, but it seems kind of silly. For >$100, I want some color pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for cartography students
I am a GIS student in the natural resources field.I had to use this book and was not all that thrilled with it, but that is because it is about cartography.I reluctantly admit that us GIS-ers need to know cartography, but we don't have to like it.For mapping, this book is a good one.It covers the essential points to topics such as dot, choropleth, graduated symbol and other thematic maps.It covers how to make them and what symbols should do for the reader, as well as how to design for your map reader. It also covers mapping theory and how it relates to typography, symbol placement, visual hiearchy and the use of color.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hopelessly Disorganized
I had to use this book in two classes for my Land Use/GIS degree. The book's layout is rather confusing, and the information is not laid out in a logical manner.Headings and sub-headings are not apparent and do not follow a natural progression.Seems like the book was put together with a cut-and-paste method! The text is about as dry as a well-done pot roast.Good bedtime reading!
The primary purpose of map making is to guide the reader's eye to areas of importance, and to get the information across to the reader in a concise, interesting, and elegant manner. This book does none of these well.
The breadth of information, however, is quite good, hence the two stars. This is probably why it is used frequently by faculty. ... Read more
