This community-based inquiry sought to gain an understanding of the process by which elements of a local context attempted to influence, via agenda setting, the formulation of public policy at the federal level. Data were gathered via the qualitative methods of document review, participant observation, and interviews. Local government officials, leaders of religious and refugee advocacy groups, Immigration and Naturalization personnel, and Central Americans were key data sources. Juan Fermin de Aycinena was the wealthiest, most prominent, and most powerful individual in late colonial Central America. Chronicling Aycinena's extraordinary rise to power, Richmond F. Brown also sheds new light on the development of politics, economy, and society in Central America. As Brown demonstrates, Aycinena played a role in practically all aspects of isthmian affairs, including commercial expansion, military activities, and the church establishment. He was both an aggressive entrepreneur and a defender of traditional colonial institutions. For his numerous services to the Spanish Crown, Aycinena received a Castilian title, the only title in late colonial Central America. Aycinena's success placed his family in a position to dominate Central American politics, commerce, and society for much of the nineteenth century. Very interesting and the subject well researched
Being a descendant of Juan Fermin de Aycinena I became interested in knowing more about the family background. This book not only consists about a biography but also gives a very well elaborated description of the geographical, social, political, religious and economic situation of Guatemala. In a strong manner, the book connects his place of birth with Juan Fermin's "mission" to Central America. I've always been curious about my family's past, and through my grandfather and parents I have been able to know about it. This book opened an even larger door to the first Aycinena who went to Guatemala. ... Read more
