Product Description
This collection of essays shows how chaos concepts have motivated theory, research, and applications in many areas of psychology, from neurophysiology to social psychology. While it includes chaos theory, fractals, and neural nets, its central theme is how dynamical modeling in psychology may provide for a proper balance of unification and diversity throughout the field. The volume provides not so much the technical details of the field, but rather examples of both research and professional applications of the many directions that innovations using this unifying approach can take. It is written at a level accessible to the lay reader, but sufficiently sophisticated to enlighten graduate and upper-level undergraduate students, as well as professionals seeking to employ this approach in psychology. ... Product Description
An exciting new way of teaching chaos in dynamical systems to undergraduates, using a combination of text and computer experiments. This book presents elements of the theory of chaos in dynamical systems in a framework of theoretical understanding coupled with numerical and graphical experimentation. The theory is developed using only elementary calculus and algebra, and includes dynamics of one-and two-dimensional maps, periodic orbits, stability and its quantification, chaotic behavior, and bifurcation theory of one-dimensional systems. There is an introduction to the theory of fractals, with an emphasis on the importance of scaling, and a concluding chapter on ordinary differential equations. The accompanying software, written in Java, enables students to carry out their own quantitative experiments on a variety of nonlinear systems, including the analysis of fixed points of compositions of maps, calculation of Fourier spectra and Lyapunov exponents, and box counting for two-dimensional maps. It also provides for visualizing orbits, final state and bifurcation diagrams, Fourier spectra and Lyapunov exponents, basins of attractions, three-dimensional orbits, Poincaré sections, and return maps. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The practical approach
I've had this book for some time and have used the associated software (downloaded from the internet) from time to time to illustrate some of the concepts to others. I would recommend the book for the software alone. It is an excellent work and a valuable addition to anyone's bookshelf.

The book contains a very practical introduction to nonlinear dynamics and the associated fractals. There is little theory here and one needs a good companion text if a deeper understanding of the theoretical foundations is required. The advantage of this approach is that the whole book can be read and understood with only a minimal mathematical background. (Lots of other books claim this but fall well short and require quite advanced knowledge of topology and set theory.)

A star is lost for the usual reason: no worked solutions to the exercises. ... Read more

Product Description
Chaos theory is a field of study in mathematics, physics, and philosophy studying the behavior of dynamical systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. This sensitivity is popularly referred to as the butterfly effect. Small differences in initial conditions yield widely diverging outcomes for chaotic systems, rendering long-term prediction impossible in general. This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future dynamics are fully determined by their initial conditions, with no random elements involved. In other words, the deterministic nature of these systems does not make them predictable. This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simply chaos. Chaotic behavior can be observed in many natural systems, such as the weather. Explanation of such behavior may be sought through analysis of a chaotic mathematical model, or through analytical techniques such as recurrence plots and Poincaré maps. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
This book is essentially meant for graduate students researching nonlinear dynamics from both mapping and flow perspectives.

I found it a very helpful collection of articles on the nonlinear phenomena from a computational perspective. Most of the articles do not delve into math-heavy derivations but serve more as illustration of topics. This serves well as a reference book for nonlinear time history research. It might not be very useful to someone looking for derivations, application specifics, or nonlinear analysis methods. For more detailed dynamics analysis it might be helpful to examine the JMT Thompson and HB Stewart book, nonlinear dynamics and chaos.

1-0 out of 5 stars Drowning in idiocy...
I purchased this book a few years back expecting a unique fusion of eastern and western schools of thought. I knew enough about Chaos Theory to have a decent basis, and I have always been fascinated with eastern philosophy. This book started out intelligently, going over the basis of Chaos and talking about Taoism. Shortly thereafter, though, it was like wading out into the ocean and falling off the continental shelf into fu-fu land. After that, therewere wacky self-study workshops about lighting candles and stuff. Perhaps my expectations were too much, but this book exemplifies the idiocy that most people associate with with new age-type stuff. If this is what you expect going into it, you may enjoy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, lacks knowledge into its subject matter
This books explores the connections between East and West, trying to weave a thread through an incredible amount of seemingly unrelated topics. On the surface, the book seems to be a tour-de-force of knowledge, on such wide topics I-Ching, dreams, chaos theory, genetics and DNA, atomic structure, etc.Unfortunately, the authorâ(tm)s knowledge of her material appears to be extremely poor. The thread of connections weaving the material is so thin it is possible to connect anything with anything using such vague relations.

For example, the main point of connection between the I-Ching and genetics is the simple fact that both can be described using a binary number system. The way she presents it though, is as if it is an amazing discovery. For example, there are 4 acids in DNA that pair together in groups of 3 pairs. This she symbolizes by the hexagrams of the I-Ching.Note that there are 4 possible ways to make the âaetranslationâ between the symbols.Later, she shows how if DNA changes to RNA, we get a different hexagram for each combination.Again, there are 4 different ways of mapping this change. So 4 x 4 is 16, i.e., each one of her RNA groups can have 16 different I-Ching hexagrams mapped to it depending on how she chooses the rules. After all this, she presents precisely 16 examples of how the meaning of a certain hexagram is similar to the biological function of the corresponding RNA group. Not so coincidental, given she had 16 choices, so she could have started from those examples and worked her way backwards to produce the rules.

The style of this book is extremely annoying, especially if you are familiar with the mathematics and science. As another reviewer points out, she redefines many scientific terms to meanings that are sometimes contrary to their scientific definitions.Very simple mathematical tricks are announced with great pomp, as if they are some major discoveries, while many of the more complicated connections are not explained very well.Speculation is merged into the text with little evidence. The book wouldnâ(tm)t be so bad a read, at least as an imaginative study, if it were not so repetitive, a little clearer, and if it didnâ(tm)t redefine the terminology from standard usage.

All in all, this book is a real waste of time and money. For a much better book on east-west connections, try âaeThe Tao of Physicsâ by Fritjof Capra, well worth the money you pay for it compared to this. The Tao of Physics is packed with meaningful material, and the author goes to great pains to draw deep connections and explain difficult concepts in simple language. If you want to learn more about the I-Ching and Eastern philosophy, get a copy of the original I-Ching and read it for yourself. Theâ Tao of Poohâ/âaeTe of Pigletâ series by Benjamin Hoff also is a great, 5-star introduction. If you want to learn more about the science of chaos, get a REAL science book, something like "Chaos and Fractals" by Peitgen, Jurgens, and Saupe, which is designed to be read with or without the mathematics, depending on your preference and ability.

4-0 out of 5 stars Creative and stimulating speculations
I'm a PhD mathematician with a few publications in "chaos theory" and also some experience researching in other areas Katya touches on in this book, such as molecular biology. While she plays fast and loose with terminology sometimes, I think she also makes a lot of really interesting points.I don't care much for the I Ching, but her analysis of the parallels between the I Ching and DNA are fascinating, and give some insights into the mathematical structure of both the I Ching and DNA.If she were a little more careful in her treatment of science, this could have been a five-star book. But I'll give it four stars for inventiveness and creativity.Unlike most authors writing books at the science-spirituality boundary, she's not just spouting the same old platitudes; she actually has some new things to say, albeit most of them are speculative from the scientific point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Katya Walters discusses some very interesting parallels between Eastern philosophies, art, and modern science. I think this book opened my eyes to how almost everything can be understood as a rhythmic process of polar opposites. It really enabled me to understand the rhythm of things in nature including ouselves as humans. You can read an even better and interesting account of rhythm in nature (including human nature) in The Ever-Transcending Spirit by Toru Sato. Sato's book has taken this idea and applied it to a wider variety of human experiences relating to development, consciousness, and human interaction and interpersonal relationships. Nevertheless, Walters' book is still a very interesting account on the general rhythm of chaos and order and well worth a read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenominal investigation and application
Anyone who doesn't like this book does not understand it. "The answer is simply as your level of understanding makes possible", Star Trek. As a student of physics and the I Ching I could not believe someone elsehad been that deep in the well of Chaos and the I ching. I applaud Katyaand encourage any deeply inquiring mind to check this one out. Thin threadsconnect great things. ... Read more

Product Description
Chaos Theory is the electrifying new thriller from Gary Krist, a brilliant and chilling journey through the streets of Washington, D.C.-where innocence and corruption collide.Amazon.com Review
We all had those terrible nights in high school. We borrowed dad's car, and instead of rushing home to meet curfew, decided to indulge in a little mischief: party-hopping, drag-racing on a deserted road, or drinking beer during an impromptu "sleepover." But what if the little violation of parental trust turned into something much worse? What if somebody died during that joy ride? What if the events of that one night changed your life forever?

In Gary Krist's Chaos Theory, two college-bound high school students watch an evening on the town turn into the nightmare of a lifetime. Jason Rourke and Dennis Monroe are smart and respectable boys from a suburban Washington D.C. neighborhood. Jason is white and Dennis is black, and their occasional discomfort over racial identity sometimes leads them to a bit of posing. One Sunday night, Dennis, pretending an urban sophistication, convinces Jason that they should head to the seedy side of D.C. to score some marijuana. Their black Audi is an easy target for the dealer, who attempts to reach into the car and grab the boys. They flee the scene, dragging the man behind the car for a moment before his arm snaps, shots are fired, and he falls into the road. The boys return home, their hearts pounding, feeling fortunate to have escaped injury. But the next morning's paper reports that the man they escaped is now dead. And their failed petty crime inadvertently involves them in a mess of city politics when the dealer turns out to be a police officer in disguise.

Krist carefully unfolds the subsequent investigation as the two boys realize that they can't escape punishment. Gradually, the novel evolves into a briskly paced thriller as the deeper implications of the officer's death--and his connections to an insidious political conspiracy--put Jason and Dennis in fatal jeopardy. Throughout, Krist never abandons the careful control of his prose and his characters; one can't help but see oneself in Jason and Dennis's plight. And Krist's observations about D.C.--its corrupt politics, its tragic separation between haves and have-nots, and its pervasive racial tensions--simmer behind every page. --Patrick O'Kelley ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking plot...
Two teenaged boys become bored at a very straight laced birthday party and decide to leave to find a little excitement so the evening isn't a complete bust. Most teenagers do something very similar to what these boys did, and seldom if ever does a lapse in judgement turn out like it did for Rourke and Monroe. But then that's what makes this such a good story and captures the reader's interest from start to finish. The very idea that something like this could really happen is both plausible and quite chilling. Because the plot is an interesting one, and the development of this story is very well done, the book is worth both your money and your time. However, I do believe that the characters could have been better developed. The Jason Rourke character left me completely cold, and he's the one who, in my opinion, should have been the most sympathetic character in the book. Teenagers certainly have their own way of looking at their circumstances, and many do indeed come off as remote, but Jason seemed to be on autopilot from the middle of this book until the end, and given what happened to him, I found that both unsettling and not very credible. I don't think the characterization of his father was much better. But given the strength of the story, this may not be problematic for another reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good-Better-Best..... Gary Krist
It's a good book about teenagers, who enjoy their lifes with drugs and you can see the reality of police life. I think, Gary Krist told us a bit of the real life in his book. I like his writing style and i only can say to all people: Read the book, it's exciting and adventurous together!

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally absorbing
I generally don't care much for or about thrillers, but I knew this author from his short story work, so I gave it a try.And I have to say, it hooked me from beginning to end, keeping me awake for most of two nights. The book follows the conventions of the thriller genre, but what makes it (for me) are the characterizations. This is the story of a dozen or so real and believable people, undergoing real and believable turmoil.I think what turns me off to most thrillers is the lack of this sense of real people. If they're just cardboard cutouts, who cares if they're in danger? But the characters in Chaos Theory aren't just complex, the'yre also full of the odd personality bits and pieces that you always have with flesh and blood people. You really feel you know these characters, so you're caught up when things go wrong for them.I really didn't want this book to end, and so my first reaction when I finished was to pick up Krist's other thriller, Bad Chemistry (me, somebody who doesn't read thrillers!)I guess there goes another night or two of sleep.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just another screenplay
I read this book a few months ago and did not like it at all. Since then my opinion has risen all the way to ambivalence. It isn't all that much of a mystery and the thrills are pretty much run of the mill.

The story revolves around two middle class teenage boys, Jason Rourke and Dennis Monroe, who find themselves in the wrong part of Washington, D.C., at the wrong time, for all the wrong reasons. They end up fleeing the scene of drug deal gone badand find themselves the prime suspects in a murder case in the eyes of legal authorities but also critical liabilities in the eyes of the actual murderer.

Sub-text to the plot involves Jason, who happens to be white, and his strained relationship with his father, a situation of teen angst not so uncommon. Conversely, Dennis, an African-American honor student, has an amiable family life but he is conflicted in regard to cultural issues, and this unfortunate turn of events makes it unlikely he will become "a credit to his race." Into the mix Krist adds the political environment of the Capital area, the tense racial relations, and generalized government corruption.

Jason, aided and abetted by favorite teacher with the heart- of- gold Renee, takes it on the lam for the safety of suburbia. Dennis, presumptively the smart one, is almost immediately captured and imprisoned by the nefarious antagonists. Incorporating the requisite chases, non-surprises and typical rapprochements, the story evolves and concludes as one might surmise.

It's a super fast read because there really isn't a lot to digest. A perfect candidate for a ... cable movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - MOSTLY ENJOYABLE
I read this book on vacation and found it a quick read, and very enjoyable.I wouldn't say that it was a great book, but it was good.My biggest complaint about the book was the 17-yr old character, Jason. For such a smart kid, he had no common sense, and I found this irritating.Like someone else said, he certainly had an over-the-top case of teen rebellion!Otherwise, I liked the rest of the characters. ... Product Description
Are the applications of chaos theory to social sciences following the same path as the hard sciences, from the scientific philosophy level to the quantitative science level? Or to put it more bluntly, is the chaos paradigm useful at all for the study of society? These questions underlie the main themes of this book, which explores the interface between chaos theory and the social sciences. A broad variety of fields (including Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Management, Philosophy and Cognitive Sciences) is represented in the book. The leading themes are: Conceptual and Methodological Issues, Social Connectionism and the Connectionist Mind, Social Institutions and Public Policy, and Social Simulations. The book includes the following topics: the relevance of the complexity-chaos paradigm for analyzing social systems, the usefulness of nonlinear dynamics for studying the formation and sustainability of social groups, the comparison between spontaneous social orders and spontaneous biological/natural orders, the building of Artificial Societies, and the contribution of the chaos paradigm to a better understanding and formulation of public policies. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Summary of the book
Introduction

The objectives of the book are:  To study in detail the stock market crashes, to discover what went wrong and to learn from these past traumatic episodes; and  To identify andexplain the underlying structure of the financial market behavior.

Chaosis Discovered Newtonian vs. Chaos For the last 300 years, our thoughts havebeen profoundly influenced by the Newtonian theory, which, as we know, rests on assumption of a linear system. This theory is best applied tosystem with two objects interacting with each other. When used to elucidatethe system with three objects or more, Newtonian theory collapses.

Chaostheory, which is based on complex and non-linear system, is a relativelynew discipline (circa 30 years). Its use in social science and field ofphysics have gained wide acceptance. The author attempts to apply thetheory to the financial market.

Chaos Rules

Chaos describesunpredictable behavior that is governed by rules. Ian Stewart in his book,"Does God Play Dice?" gives the following definition: "Chaos is lawlessbehavior governed entirely by law".

Chaos in Financial Market

Theauthor comment regarding the stock market behaviors using the chaos theoryis as follows:  Financial market is inherently unstable anddynamic system, and the mood of the majority of its player can flip almostinstantaneously from one state to another. Hence financial market resemblesa chaotic system. An orderly phase may dissolve into chaos & then tipback to a more ordered state.  Stock markets are holistic thatsometimes their collective behaviors will be different from that of theircomponent unit (i.e. individuals & investors).

Chaos Theory inActions After noting the similarities between financial markets behaviorand chaos theory, the author studied several important financial crisesover the last 300 years to see whether there was any underlying structurebeneath the crashes. She discovered that many speculative bubbles shared acluster of common features. \ The author does not try to predict when thecrash will happen. Instead, she seeks to uncover what is the underlyingstructure of financial market and how investor can profit from it byassessing in which phase he is at a particular time.

The author studiedthe following crashes and described the sequence of events using the tenphase structure: 1. Bubbles of 1720  Mississippi Madness South Sea Fiasco 2. Modern Bubbles  Great Crash1929  Global Crash 1987  Japanese Bubble Bonds Bubble

So what if we know the history and chaostheory?

How To Be Prepared? Compiling a checklist based on the structureof crash scenario (ten-phase structure) has the followingpurposes:

 It is a systematic way of dealing with thesituation. It provides an orderly framework to analyze the signals andprepare oneself for any occurrence of the crash; and

 Ithelps the investors to judge more clearly how far along the route of chaosscenario has progressed.

(The checklist is elaborated in thetextbook).

In addition to the checklist, there is also a need to look outfor other cluster of symptoms or occurrence of other events (such asemergence of new financial tools, collapse of big corporations etc) toconfirm the findings from the checklist.

What to do with the checklist? To avoid any avalanche of selling, one must be able to identify at leastthe first 3-5 phases and clear your position at phase 5 or 6 (i.e. whengullible public joins in or when doubt starts to form).

However, ifone misses the signal and fails to sell off by phase 6, it is still not toolate to do so as long as it is done before the markets reach the bottom. This will allow one to cash out and reinvest when the markets hit thebottom.

What if u misses all the phases?- As the chaos theory shows, the market will turn around eventually. However, the issue is how longwill it take? No one knows.

Timing the Crash - Is it possible? Whilst it may not be too difficult to identify the signals of an impendingcrash (based on the phases in the structure of crashes), one can neveraccurately predict the timing of occurrence.Time is the mostuntrustworthy and unpredictable element. As shown in the charts, thepoints might get squeezed together or pulled part -- this is a commonfeature of a chaotic system.

Since predicting the exact timing of crashesis highly unreliable, in order to avoid being caught off guard, one has toclosely watch for any trigger event that may unleash a selling cascade.Another strategy is to give up the hope of catching the extreme peak andbottom and be contended as long as you buy near the bottom and sell nearthe top.

Conclusion

Chaos theory has taught investors how topreserve their capitals from the disaster of a crash. The 3 main points tobear in mind are as follows:

 Need to recognize anyunintentional actions of the financial authorities which may create aclassic chaos conditions and prepare own course of actions;

Even the most sophisticated and cautious long term investors can becomeirrational and act in tandem with the speculators; and

Understand that falling bond prices with rising interest rate may resultfrom the collapse of a financial pump instead of a reflection of thefundamental outlook of the economy.

One of the most important events towatch is the action by the presiding authorities which may trigger afinancial pump and set the phase transition in motion. When it happens, one should know how to react.

In conclusion, as a Fund Manager, oneshould

 Be fully aware of what is happening in the financial, political and economic sectors around the world. One of them could be thetrigger event.  Be able to identify at which phase thefinancial market is in and predict the transition and the edge of chaos. Be able to clear his position and not to be influenced by theherd behavior if he concludes that the market at peak and near the point ofcollapse. This is a tough discipline to follow especially if he has astrict mandate and the clients' expectations increase during the boom. ... Read more

Chaos theory is a revolutionary approach to understanding and forecasting the behavior of complex systems. The theory, which utilizes nonlinear mathematics to identify the underlying rules of evolving systems, provides extraordinary insights into the dynamics of the financial markets. In so doing, Dr. Chorafas explores a variety of new approaches that provide an entirely new perspective on financial market analysis and forecasting. Topics include: the concepts and mathematics of chaos theory; using nonlinear equations and fractals to forecast the currency market; genetic algorithms and neural networks. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Gross misrepresentation
This book is not by Robert L. Trippi. There may be no Robert L. Trippi, but there is a Robert R. Trippi, and he did not write this book. The book in fact is by one Dimitris N. Chorafas. The book is listed as being published by Macmillan. The actual publishing house is Irwin Professional Press. The book, when it arrives, does not have the advertised 400 pages, but rather 374.The index ends abruptly at that point with Dawkins. It is impossible to say what is going on here, but it is not good. The book itself, as I glanced through it, appears to be insultingly simple-minded and probably misguided.By all means save your time, your money, and your anger.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.
A much better title for this book would have been "Interesting Financial Concepts That Hopefully Some Other Book Will Teach You"

As an engineer, I saw this as a very shallow treatment of Chaos Theory that will do NOTHING for those who actually wish to apply it to financialmarkets. Chapter after chapter poses questions to the reader but fails dodeliver the answers. One can only assume that the few diagrams and examplespresented are not explained because the author just does not fullyunderstand them.

The reviewer who claims that the book was a goodstarting point may have been partially right. It asks so many questionsthat now I must find a text with at least one or two answers.

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless, overpriced
Although math is mentioned in the desciption, you won't find any in this book. This book is written for junior high school economics students who have never heard the terms chaos or fuzzy logic before. With a background in non-linear dynamics, I found this text insulting for its price. Application of the current trendy concepts to any market whatsoever wascompletely lacking. It is essentially a 300+ page version of Webster'sdictionary definition of chaos. For the amount of information present inthis book, it should be priced in the five to ten dollar range.

1-0 out of 5 stars Compendium of Slide Projector Chapters
Something of a disappointment. There is almost nothing of a truly technical nature.A lot of chalk board drawings but nothing you can feed to a computer to test any ideas. It would have been worth the price if ithad included a few real world models, perhaps implemented as spreadsheets. Otherwise, it's just a b-r-o-a-d overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent base for developing profitable market strategies.
Apparently a book's value is in the eyes of the beholder. The Oregonian writer of the negative comments about the Chorafas book reached a far different conclusion than I did. I think that person must have been lookingfor an elementary cookbook that would make him rich by following a fewsimple rules and not having any work to do.Personally, the Chorafas bookwas exactly the launching point I needed, and I used my engineeringbackground to develop Chorafas' concepts and apply them directly to thestock market, and I am making a lot of money. ... Product Description
Chaos theory has touched on such fields as biology, cognitive science, and physics. By providing a unified and complete explanation of new statistical methods that are useful for testing for chaos in data sets, Brock, Hsieh, and LeBaron show how the principles of chaos theory can be applied to such areas of economics and finance as the changing structure of stock returns and nonlinearity in foreign exchange. They use computer models extensively to illustrate their ideas and explain this frontier research at a level of rigor sufficient for others to build upon as well as to verify the soundness of their arguments. The authors, who have played a major role in developing basic testing methods that are effective in detecting chaos and other nonlinearities, provide a detailed exposition of empirical techniques for identifying evidence of chaos. They introduce and describe the BDS statistic, an easy-to-use test that detects the existence of potentially forecastable structure, nonstationarity, or hidden patterns in time-series data and that can be adapted to test for the adequacy of fit of forecasting models. An extensive performance evaluation of the BDS is included.Nonlinear Dynamics, Chaos, and Instability also reviews important issues in the theoretical economics literature on chaos and complex dynamics, surveys existing work on the detection of chaos and nonlinear structure, and develops models and processes to discover predictable sequencing in time-series data, such as stock returns, that currently appear random.William A. Brock is Vilas Research Professor of Economics and Blake LeBaron is Assistant Professor of Economics, both at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. David A. Hsieh is Professor of Business at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University. ... Read more

I am using this book for a course in uni.

I found it really unreadable. Notations are really slack....will make you so confused.

It does not really show you the details.....
After reading the book, what you wil get is a bunch of theorems.....
which you will not be able to apply in the future.....
because assumptions of the theorems were written so ambiguously....that you won't even know how to check whether they are satisfied.

Poorly written..... ... Read more

A powerful new way to navigate today's unprecedented market conditions

"Bill Williams' pioneering application of chaos theory to the financial markets is leading technical analysis into the twenty-first century and beyond. New Trading Dimensions presents a complete, highly original, and intriguing trading method with clear, detailed illustrations, and challenging practice pages. Bill's wisdom, technical expertise, and skillful teaching style make this a revolutionary must-have new book for stock and commodity traders." —Tom Bierovic, Product Manager for User Education, Omega Research, Inc.

"Bill hits the nail on the head. The essence of successful trading is a combination of knowing who you are and allowing the market to reveal its secrets. Bill Williams has the gift of explaining these concepts better than anyone I know. This is a compelling work that belongs in every trader's library." —George Angell, author, Profitable Day-Trading with Precision

"Bill Williams is one of the great educators of our time. He freely shares his knowledge and experience in this inexpensive book. This book is required reading for all market technicians. The principles are sound as we have tested them with our software." —John Hill, President, Futures Truth, Co.

"Bill Williams has always been an excellent teacher, taking complex terms and concepts and translating them into a clear, commonsense approach to trading. This book provides a complete trading program that reflects Bill's years of wisdom and experience in the marketplace." —Darrell Jobman, Editorial Consultant and former Editor-in-Chief of Futures magazine

"Bill uses the hidden structure of chaos theory to skillfully guide the reader to the correct psychological profile for success in trading. Bill then goes on to provide a comprehensive structure, a trading paradigm, directly derived from his research and considerable trading experience. You will be challenged, interested, and have a mind-opening experience that's even fun." —Joe DiNapoli, author, Trading with DiNapoli Levels

As today's market environment continues to change dramatically, more and more traders are discovering that traditional forecasting methods—pure technical analysis and fundamental analysis—just do not work. Sending out contradictory messages, these opposing schools of thought leave investors baffled about the future direction of the market, and consequently, at a loss as to how to tailor their trading systems. As a result, many practitioners have now turned to a new forecasting "cocktail" that combines traditional charting methodologies with chaos theory and human psychology. In this groundbreaking book, Bill Williams, a seasoned trader at the forefront of this dynamic new approach, explains exactly what it is, how it works in current stock and commodity markets, and how to use it to your advantage.

Based on human nature rather than the vagaries of the market, the new trading dimension works on the premise that we trade not the market, but our own belief system. By assessing what your personal biases are, you can determine how they influence your ultimate success—or failure—and then adjust your trading strategies accordingly.

Written by an expert in the field who has been featured in Futures, Worth, Success, and other prominent publications, New Trading Dimensions takes the latest in scientific knowledge about human behavior and applies it directly to the fields of stock and commodity investing and trading. With straightforward guidelines, it shows you how to adopt the right attitude toward the behavior of the market and use the right tools (ATTITOOLS) for profitable trading. Packed with practice exercises, specific applications to different types of investments, and a detailed review of important market signals, here's where you'll learn how to:

  • Discover what the market wants and align your own beliefs with the direction of the market
  • Apply chaos theory to trading and investing
  • Use Williams' "Market Alligator" for analyzing and profiting from the markets
  • Employ a multidimensional trading program that includes such tools and techniques as fractals, oscillators, AC signals, psychological zones, and balance lines
  • Exit trades in a timely fashion to reap high returns

Drawing on the author's more than forty years of experience as both a successful trader and seasoned trainer, this invaluable guide offers a breakthrough method that has proven its ability to turn investors into consistent winners. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The ideas presented in this book without doubt put you on the right side of the market.A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have masterpiece
It does not matter what people say, you MUST read this book and draw your own conclusions. And I'm pretty sure that it will change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is right but difficult to make profit
I was very interested in Bill Williams's trading method, because I have used Metatrader4 to treat currency pairs. MT4's technical analyses have Bill Williams's alligator and AO and AC and others in default setting. I read this book and try to do exactly and realized that it is difficult to make profit in flat and corrective triangle waves. To avoid this waste of money, you must understand Elliot wave principle or keep eyes on the chart. But once a trend start, this method makes profit certainly. Totally make a little profit unless lost compensation at all in flat double and triple three.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you use the alligator method of trading:Vote For - else if not- Vote Against
1. Everything in the Universe follows the path of least resistance

2. An always underlying and usually unseen structure determines the path of least resistance.

3. The always underlying and usually unseen structure can be discovered, and it can be altered.

4. The four largest money gatherers and distributors in the world are: war, medicine, insurance, and religion.

5. Traders who let the new incoming information organize their trading will be in sync with the market and thereby will be winners.

6. "The market is infinitely complex. Freedom and free will-strange attractors-prevail over rules and determinacy.

7. Fractals are the way markets organize themselves.

8. Everything that exists is drawn out of this quantum soup by attractors. All outer phenomena are governed by four attractors: point attractor, cycle attractor, torus attractor, and strange attractor. Point attractor lives in the dimension of a line, which is made up of infinite number of points. Whenever, a point attractor is governing, a person is drawn to one particular activity, or repelled from another. The cycle attractor is back and forth movement, like a pendulum or circling magnet. It is characterized of a range bound or bracketed market where the price moves up and down in a range over a period of time. One activity automatically leads into another activity. In grain markets, one year of high prices produces more plantings in the next spring, which produces lower prices. The cycle attractor produces a structural tension between the two poles and opens the way for integration between the two opposites. The torus attractor begins a complex cycle that repeats itself as it moves forward. If the bond interest goes up, it attracts mre investors. Bond prices go up, which lowers the interest rate and makes bonds less attractive, and so on. Third dimension, predictions are more precise, higher degree of irregularity, patterns more complex, and repeating function. Strange attractor becomes self-organizing. One characteristic of strange attractor is its sensitivity to initial conditions. The slightest variation in the beginning can make enormous differences in the end result. The strange attractor allows us to participate in the ebb and flow of the market and of life.

9. Bill Williams trade approach involves five perspectives: 1. Momentum 2. Change in the speed of current momentum 3. Appearance of initiating fractal 4. zonal influences 5. balance-line differentials.

10. To win consistently in the markets you must get to know them and how they process incoming information. Get in tune with the market and change your belief about the market and the world.

11. One of the keys to profitable trading is to take only those trades with the most potential and stay out of situations where there is marginal potential.

12. Most of the time the market goes nowhere and about 15 to 30 percent of the time does the market trend. We don't want to waste time entering and existing the market without profiting, if the market is going nowhere then opportunity is going nowhere.

13. Alligator is blue line (13 bar moving average), red line (8 bar moving average offset 5 bars into the future), and green line (5 bars moving average 3 bars into the future). Blue is the jaw, red line is the teeth, green is the lips the balance line. When all three lines are intertwined the alligator is sleeping, range bound market. We don't want to loss money during a range bound. All five highs or lows should be on the same side of the blue balance line. The stop to exit is just inside the red line (teeth).

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely specific strategies and tactics involving MACD and Moving Average Oscillator
If moving average oscillator is part of your trading plan, this book will help tremendously. This book has very specific strategies and tactics concerning moving average oscillator usage. Although they are not meant to be mechanized, they are systematic enough to be used in very structured way.

4-0 out of 5 stars A well-documented history of the dismal economic science
Lars Tvede has managed to give his readers what most students of economics never get during their studies: a highly readable and entertaining overview about the way economic knowledge has progressed through time, and the wayhistoric events (yes, wars, bubbles, etc.) have shaped the development ofeconomics. The book is well researched and written in a very enjoyablestyle. If you are tired with short-term GDP forecasts and would like tohave a look at the "big picture", this book is definitely foryou.

The only reason this book doesn't get five stars are the lastchapters about chaos theory, which are a bit "sticky", butnevertheless provide some interesting insights into some of the most recentdevelopements of modern economic theory. Enjoy your reading

What is chaos? How can it be measured? How are the models estimated? What is catastrophe? How is it modelled? How are the models estimated? These questions are the focus of this volume.

Beginning with an explanation of the differences between deterministic and probabilistic models, Brown then introduces the reader to chaotic dynamics. Other topics covered are finding settings in which chaos can be measured, estimating chaos using nonlinear least squares and specifying catastrophe models. Finally a nonlinear system of equations that models catastrophe using real survey data is estimated. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good as a supplement
This book is good as a supplement to someone who already knows the subject matter; its style may be discouraging for many starters since many details are not provided, maybe because of its size. Additionally, the book suffers many production errors that can affect its readability. Many symbols are used in equations without proper definitions, and there are numerous typographical errors that can be of concern to the reader; for example, in 24 in section 2.3 it mentions integration of equation 2.18, while actually equation 2.18 is on page 28, section 2.6. Unfortunately, there is no list of errata, so use it with care.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for culture, not for analysis !
If you like ODE's in the context of engineering applications, this book is for you. Unfortunately, if you're interested in analyzing and modeling some practical dynamic system, this is probably of no use. It mainly describes systems for which there are already known closed-form equations describing the dynamics, and shows where and why chaos comes from. It may help you if you're dealing with a mechanical system that can be easily modelled by a set of ODE's but it is not analytic enough to be useful for poeple involved into modeling and analysis of a completely new dynamic system for which no equations already exist.

I think that books on "chaos theory" are far better like : "Chaos theory tamed", "Fractals, chaos and power laws"...

For people interested in time series analysis whith chaotic looking data, please don't skip the exceptionnal : "Nonlinear Time Series Analysis" from Kantz and Schreiber ! This is an absolutely amazing book : if you need one book for helping you to analyze your data, this one will do the job !

"Chaos for engineers" probably doesn't deserve the time and the money, unless you want to get some "chaos theory culture" in the context of engineering applications. ... Read more
