Product Description

For students, DIY hobbyists, and science buffs, who can no longer get real chemistry sets, this one-of-a-kind guide explains how to set up and use a home chemistry lab, with step-by-step instructions for conducting experiments in basic chemistry -- not just to make pretty colors and stinky smells, but to learn how to do real lab work:

  • Purify alcohol by distillation
  • Produce hydrogen and oxygen gas by electrolysis
  • Smelt metallic copper from copper ore you make yourself
  • Analyze the makeup of seawater, bone, and other common substances
  • Synthesize oil of wintergreen from aspirin and rayon fiber from paper
  • Perform forensics tests for fingerprints, blood, drugs, and poisons
  • and much more

From the 1930s through the 1970s, chemistry sets were among the most popular Christmas gifts, selling in the millions. But two decades ago, real chemistry sets began to disappear as manufacturers and retailers became concerned about liability. ,em>The Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments steps up to the plate with lessons on how to equip your home chemistry lab, master laboratory skills, and work safely in your lab. The bulk of this book consists of 17 hands-on chapters that include multiple laboratory sessions on the following topics:

  • Separating Mixtures
  • Solubility and Solutions
  • Colligative Properties of Solutions
  • Introduction to Chemical Reactions & Stoichiometry
  • Reduction-Oxidation (Redox) Reactions
  • Acid-Base Chemistry
  • Chemical Kinetics
  • Chemical Equilibrium and Le Chatelier's Principle
  • Gas Chemistry
  • Thermochemistry and Calorimetry
  • Electrochemistry
  • Photochemistry
  • Colloids and Suspensions
  • Qualitative Analysis
  • Quantitative Analysis
  • Synthesis of Useful Compounds
  • Forensic Chemistry
With plenty of full-color illustrations and photos, Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments offers introductory level sessions suitable for a middle school or first-year high school chemistry laboratory course, and more advanced sessions suitable for students who intend to take the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry exam. A student who completes all of the laboratories in this book will have done the equivalent of two full years of high school chemistry lab work or a first-year college general chemistry laboratory course.

This hands-on introduction to real chemistry -- using real equipment, real chemicals, and real quantitative experiments -- is ideal for the many thousands of young people and adults who want to experience the magic of chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best home chemistry book available
I bought this book because of a renewed interest in Chemistry, a subject that I very well on in college, but forgot most of twenty years later. Based on the books' description, I was hoping for a book that was hands on, would cover the basics, and would lead me into more advanced chemistry at some point.

The book did not disappoint - it by far exceeded my expectations. The first five chapters of the book were preparatory - maintaining a lab notebook, safety, what laboratory chemicals and equipment need to be purchased. The author offers cheaper solutions for chemicals or equipment that could be made by oneself or purchased cheaply from a grocery/hardware store. The fifth chapter describes the basics of lab practices - making weight and volume measurements, working with glass tubing, filtration, etc. These important details were very beneficial to me, as I had forgotten all of them.

Chapter six and on were labs, which started from the basics, and became progressively more challenging. The labs are grouped by type (i.e., separating mixtures, solubility, etc). Each lab starts with some background information, but it is typically brief. It is recommended to purchase a chemistry text (although not necessary to do the labs).I bought the recommended book, and found it quite beneficial. The labs are not "child" chemistry, like making elephant toothpaste or baking soda fountains, but are high-school and college level, and beyond.Dangerous chemicals are sometimes used, as is necessary if you want to do real chemistry, but the author uses good judgment and uses safer chemicals where possible.

There are a few experiments where an equation or some important details are not given - it seems that the author is trying to encourage the reader to do some research in a chemistry reference text. There are also questions at the end of each lab, and some of them are quite difficult.

The author maintains a website and forum with errata and supplementary information, and also hosts a Youtube channel that complements the book nicely. For a small subscription cost ($18), there is an addendum that contains an answer guide for the lab questions at the end of each lab, as well as over 30 additional labs.I highly recommend that as well.

This is by far the best book for home chemistry that I have found, and I am thoroughly pleased with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars As advertised
This book is exactly as advertised. It has a big section in the front explaining what you need, what you realy don't need, and why. If you want to learn about chemistry and have a home lab. This is a good book to use as a lab work book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book
Very useful book for teachers who love and enjoy making experiments not only in a laboratory but also in a theoretical class of chemistry.
The instructions are so0 clear and the ilustrations are so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars You're gonna need a chemistry equipment supplier.
This book is some solid science! It's more for the home-school crowd than the dilettante who just wants some party tricks. Granted, some of the experiments are pretty darn cool (copper ore comes to mind), but you're not going to be blowing stuff up like on YouTube - hopefully - you're just going to be doing some basic (dangerous) experiments.

This book is NOT for kids under 12 or so to use alone. It involves acids and bases of strengths which can cause burns. Which is half the fun, of course, because the book has a comprehensive safety section.

You will need some lab equipment to get more out of this book than just "hey, you can do that?" You'll need someplace that sells chemicals and someplace that sells beakers, etc. Fortunately, the book tells you how to find these sorts of retailers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just "home" chemistry but THE chemistry of the future
This is a dream come true -- a home chemistry book that is not just a bagatelle, but a full-sized lab manual and reference book (412+ pages). It's a serious book. Sadly, it will also be an historical publication, I predict, the cornerstone of all real chemistry of the future. Why? Because of the Culture of Fear: fear of chemicals, fear of glass, fear of litigation, fear of terrorism, fear of druggies (see Thompson's note about iodine on page 65). Already that culture has resulted in the death of the chemistry set, as noted in his Preface. In the near future, that same culture will result in the death of the chemistry class, too, which can easily be "replaced" by computer simulations and labs equipped with timid fake nonsense. (As much as I admire many applets that simulate reactions, as miniature works of art, I also find them disturbing as harbingers of the chemistry pseudo-lab of the future.) As that transformation continues, the day will come when KMnO4 has been replaced on the lab bench by a lookalike that pretends to do a few limited KMnO4-esque tricks and can optionally be sipped as imitation grape juice. At that point, home chemistry will be the ONLY chemistry, the only game in town. Then millions will thank Robert Thompson for having shown them a way back to the real thing. ... Read more

Product Description
For students to learn to think scientifically, they need something to think about. Authors Jean B. Umland and Jon M. Bellama accomplish this by integrating descriptive chemistry and theory throughout the book. From the very first chapter, the authors familiarize students with chemical reactions - which Umland and Bellama believe are the heart of chemistry. But the authors go beyond describing what happens during a reaction to explaining WHY chemical reactions occur. This allows the first lectures to include the interesting demonstrations that capture student interest and keep them captivated throughout the course. It's this approach that helps involve students in a fascinating discovery process that lets them experience the "Aha!" feeling, and makes them eager to learn more about the chemical processes taking place around them. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful markings
The book was in great condition. The previous owner made a few markings in the book, but they were actually helpful. Zumdahl is an easy read chemistry book. I would recommend this chemistry book to those who do not have a strong background in chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I used this book for my AP Chemistry class last year, and this is one special textbook. It is extremely clear and straight-forward, and it explains even complicated ideas (such as acid-base chemistry, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry) completely, concisely, and with many step-by-step examples. It even outlines the basic steps to take when approaching certain types of problems. The best thing, though, is that it is highly readable - I never had to go back and reread a section to try to figure out what it was trying to say. There are also plenty of practice problems, which vary in difficulty and are designed so that students first learn the basics and then gradually learn to apply them to different situations.
The only thing I think is not covered particularly well is the chapter on Organic Chemistry, which is generally a minor subject in an Introductory Chemistry course anyway. The chapter is not actually bad, but in comparison with the rest of the text, it is definitely not as clear. It introduced some new concepts in the exercises, which did not happen in any other chapters.
I did well on the AP Exam using just this book, and I frequently loan it out to my friends who are taking General Chemistry in college.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry Textbook
This book is very reader-friendly. I find it very useful in filling in what I don't understand from lectures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Easy to Read Textbook
Normally, I would have thought a chemistry textbook would be one of the most boring books out there. When I ordered this book for my class I was pleasantly suprised. The text is very clear and relavant. Relavant in that it is full of connections to the real world. This is an excellent textbook and, as a college student, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
There's so much information in this book.By far the best textbook I've read, in my life. It's easy to read and easy to understand if you take it step by step. It's the only Chemistry textbook I've owned so far, but it has really helped me understand it a lot better.I bought this used for 30 dollars, and it looks great. There is a CD that comes with this book as well, but you won't get the CD unless you buy one brand new.The book itself is 99% of the content, the CD is seemingly only used for visual demonstrations of things like Bonding and Atomic structure. ... Customer Reviews (16)

5-0 out of 5 stars Rigorous and rewarding
I ordered this book thinking it was going to be another typical Barron's review book. It wasn't - I have to say I paid little attention in this class because my teacher explained things well enough to remember for the test. When it came to preparing for the AP test, I forgot almost everything - I did the practice questions on College Board and failed.

I went through this book, maybe taking 75% of the information (there is WAY too much info, so just be a good judge of what you should know based on what you learned in class). I got a 5 - the actual test was very easy to me.

And I will be heading to Princeton next year :D. Good luck to all! Seriously recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needlessly complex, covers necessary material.
Not including the errors everyone else has mentioned, this book is needlessly difficult. The exercises it presents are much more complicated than the AP itself, furthermore many of the topics which the book tests you on are not actually on the AP. The morning of the AP I opened this book andfound 3 random multiple choice questions on a page. I could not answer any of them. Upon taking the AP, I answered all of the questions but one confidently and received a 5. This book did nothing for me but scare me out of my mind and make me grab all sorts of weaponry to make war upon this test when I was fully prepared to take it. Waste of time and money. On the positive side it does cover all the material, but so does your textbook...

2-0 out of 5 stars Riddled with errors
Beware! The sample test questions and answers are riddled with errors.Within the first 7 questions of Diagnostic Test 1, 2 of the questions contain errors that make the "correct" answer incorrect.I suggest skipping this book.Get a good chemistry text (Chang's 10th edition) and study from that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid review book but loaded with errors.
I really like Barron's review books because their philosophy is that they teach you the subject matter.Princeton Review books on the other hand are about "cracking the test" and does offer good tips, but if I were to get one book, it'd be Barron's because learning the subject is the surest way to getting a good score.Having said that, the book is LOADED with errors and for that I deduct 1 star... anything from just typing the wrong character ("=" instead of '-') to wrong answers, wrong set-ups, decimal places in wrong place, missing decimal places... you get the idea. It's as if the whole Chemical Equilibrium chapter was edited by someone who wanted to sabotage the student.I am not kidding. But the thing is, if you reasonably know the concepts, you'd catch the mistakes because the mistakes are in the examples and not in the concept explanations.Don't be scared away because of the typos, but just know they are there. In the final analysis, it is still a valuable book to me and I like it despite its faults.

2-0 out of 5 stars Review material decent, but with a plethora of errors
While it can be argued that this book does what it is intended to - provide a review of chemistry as preparation for the AP - it is difficult to justify several glaring issues with it.
1. Mistakes in the book - For a book coming from a company as well-known as Barron's, and for a test as widely taken as the AP Chemistry exam, one would expect that this book would be well-written and carefully checked over for errors. Instead, nearly every two or three pages there are errors that, while not immediately noticeable, can cause a good deal of confusion, especially when they involve miscalculations in example problems or chapter exercises.
2. Example problems - Errors in the problems aside, one would also expect that for a test that does not allow calculators the example problems in this book would be similar to those on the test; that is, they would be doable by hand. Instead, as other reviewers have pointed out, the problems expect you to do such calculations as negative logs and exponents without a calculator, which is totally unrealistic.
3. Over preparation - While I heartily agree that it is better to go into a test over prepared rather than under prepared, Barron's takes it to an extreme. Not only are there equations in the book that will almost certainly not be taught in an AP Chemistry course, let alone appear on the AP test, the level of detail the book goes into frequently ends up making the information cryptic and difficult to comprehend instead of lucid and clear. Indeed, the sheer length of the book is comparable to that of an AP Chemistry textbook, which makes it less than ideal for simply reviewing material before the exam.

Overall, this book will prepare you for the AP test. However, you will in the process be confronted with a tidal wave of typos, calculation errors, poorly written questions, and far more information and detail than is necessary. I'd expect better from Barron's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great condition! Fast Shipping!
I cannot complain about this product. It was at my doorstep within the week and arrived in great condition. Not excited to take this class! lol. but at least I have my book for wayyy cheaper than the school bookstore.

1-0 out of 5 stars same as 4th just with slightly rearranged homework problems!!
If I could I would give this book ZERO stars.

It is the exact same book as the 4th edition only the lovely publishers updated it by making the pages thinner the binding weaker and slightly rearranging the homework problem that appear at the end of each chapter.Mind you all the problems are the exact same just numbered differently to force students to by the new more expensive book, so they can turn in their homework.

Suggestion save over 175 dollars buy the 4th edition (as it is made much better, in addition to being cheaper) go to your schools library and renumber your 4th editions homework problems to reflect the order of this edition.I did this, it took only 30 mins and I saved 200 dollars!!!

Or don't if your instructor does not require you to do homework--just buy the 4th edition and save a ton of money.=)

Also, my 4th edition (bought here on Amazon) HAS the solution section too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick but intense
I am a physisist with some interest in knowing chemistry, I found this book a very intense introduction that gives a panoramic view, good to continue with more advanced readings.

3-0 out of 5 stars CliffsQuickReview Chemistry
ClifsQuickReview Chemistry offers succinct summaries of fundamentals of chemistry. It covers the basic principles, defines terms and laws, and would be useful for a beginning hobbyist, I suppose. However, high school chemistry also involves a lot of math, naming ionic/covalent compounds, and predicting products, which this book says nothing about. I am a high school sophomore and so far, I have not found this book to be very helpful as a supplement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Friggin' Incredible.
This book got me through a very grueling high school chem class. It is very easy to understand. I can't put my finger on it, but something about the way this book is written just makes understanding come naturally for me.

Hope it does the same for you. A great value. Your grade depends on it! ... Read more

The 48 experiments in this well-conceived manual illustrate important concepts and principles in general, organic, and biochemistry. As in previous editions, three basic goals guided the development of all the experiments: (1) the experiments illustrate the concepts learned in the classroom; (2) the experiments are clearly and concisely written so that students will easily understand the task at hand, will work with minimal supervision because the manual provides enough information on experimental procedures, and will be able to perform the experiments in a 2 1/2-hour laboratory period; and, (3) the experiments are not only simple demonstrations, but also contain a sense of discovery. The new edition brings forward the same clear explanations, quality problem-solving support, helpful pedagogy, and applications coverage, adding new features and content to make the text even more accessible, effective, and relevant to its student audience.

In order to motivate and thoroughly prepare students, particular attention is paid to relating the chemistry concepts to the human body, health, nutrition, and other important areas important to the student audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
Chemistry is NOT my favorite subject but this textbook made it easier to understand. My only complaint is that the answers in the back of the book were not always consistent with the answers that my instructor wanted ie..the # of sig figs or the use of the same conversion factors. Most of these concerns were alleviated with the solutions manual because at least then I could see how the answer was gotten as opposed to just having the answer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money, buy a Timberlake chemistry book instead
This textbook consistently buries important information in very wordy text.If you've taken an introductory chemistry course before and were hoping to scan the chapters to refresh your memory while doing homework or studying -- this is NOT the book for you.

Homework questions are at the end of each chapter, and frequently are more conceptual than stoichiometry type questions.Although I am not a fan of math, the stoichiometry questions are crucial to master now if you will be taking any pharmacology courses in the future (think R.N. programs).

If you have the option, buy Karen Timberlake's General, Organic and Biological Chemistry textbook instead.Apparently, that is what my school's chemistry department will be switching to next year; I recently purchased it and I wish I had bought it much sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars chem book
I really did not expect to get such good quality from a used book. If I were to have been told it was new I would have never second guessed it. As far as I can tell there are no markings or anything of that nature. The only thing that bugged me a little was how long it took to get to me.

The book was said to have been in very good condition; the spine was not worn but the edges were, and a pencil and eraser were left inside.
I wasn't impressed.

The sixth edition of General, Organic, and Biochemistry is designed to help undergraduate health-related majors, and students of all other majors, understand key concepts and appreciate the significant connections between chemistry, health, disease, and the treatment of disease. This text continues to strike a balance between theoretical and practical chemistry, while emphasizing material that is unique to health-related studies. The text has been written at a level intended for students whose professional goals do not include a mastery of chemistry, but for whom an understanding of the principles and practice of chemistry is a necessity.

Designed for the one- or two-semester course, this text has an easy-to-follow problem-solving pedagogy, vivid illustrations, and engaging applications. ... Read more

I'm very pleased with my purchase. I needed the book for school and I received it within a week.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too happy
chapters are out of order is hard to find chapters because pages are in wrong order

4-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Chemistry as the Title Describes
I took this book out of my local library as I wanted to learn about organic chemistry in a general sense, before I get down and dirty with it during class.

This book starts off with the more simple aspects of chemistry that schools teach in general chemistry. I skipped these portions since I had already learned most of them , and so can't comment on them specifically.

Instead I went to the organic chemistry sections, which seem to make up the bulk the book's center. These sections are helpful at grasping the ideas behind organic chemistry, but they never go into a lot of detail about any particular portion. For example, there is a chapter on Carboxylic acids which explains what categorizes that functional group, as well as a couple physical properties surrounding it; Such as how it'll make a salt with bases, boiling point trends. To me it felt like reading a Wikipedia entry, but one that is portable and tries to leave heavy mathematics out, and is oriented towards a more general audience. This is good, but there was a craving for more, as though things that may be important are being kept from me.

Pictures/diagrams were generally well illustrated, I would have liked in a couple places for the authors to have placed the diagrams they were referring to on the same page for fast reference, rather than move it to the next one, but I can understand how this isn't always possible. Like the pictures there was the tendency to refer to something once, then use it a lot after that, so be prepared to backtrack. Luckily there was a helpful sheet at the back that had common functional groups discussed in the organic portion of the book.

There are practice problems at the end of each chapter. As a general reader, you probably wouldn't have to go over them, as they were probably intended for classroom homework. They appeared to be based off of the practice exercises that are scattered through each chapter after they went over it. These practice exercises were well done, as the authors would go over a problem that you would see in the end of chapter questions and then work out the solution for you. Helpful to solidify the topics.

Special selected topics are also contained within the pages. These sections felt as though the author wanted less explaining and more lecturing. Not that this is bad, as the pace was certainly faster, but in that same way, it introduced a lot of vocabulary, and new substances, which are unlikely to be heavily applied outside that selected topic. These Selected Topics were interesting in that they were written about life processes so felt like they mattered. One was written about drugs that people use, and short facts about them. Another one highlighted neurons and chemical signals, which quickly became convoluted.

Overall, reading it was fun, and educational without too much investment of brainpower. Brings up interesting thoughts about the world around us.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs better diagrams and illustrations
The illustration on electron energy levels needs to be more clear. There needs to be improvement on how the periodic table's properties are explained. The text needs better, simpler and more clear graphs and illustrations. There are much better Chemistry texts out there than this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
This lab manual fits the AP Chemistry curriculum quite well. Each experiment gives some background theory and then goes into detailed description of the procedure. Prelab questions are posed for students to answer before they begin the lab. Data tables are also provided. On a number of the lab topics, two, three or even four separate choices for procedures are presented giving a wide variety of opportunities depending on apparatus available to the school.
On the down side, I can only say that the manual is a bit too wordy and gives maybe too many choices. Compared to other manuals like this one, it is a bit pricey too. ... Read more
