4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners/intermediate but not for advanced players
This is definitely a good chess book.
It contains 40 easy-to-digest lessons that always combine chess history with chess theory so you get entertained and learn something in each lesson, which makes studying the book fun.
But IMO the book definitely should be most valuable for players between USCF ratings 1000-1750 instead of the proposed 1750-2050. Players with a 1750-2050 rating may be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars find the games computer readable, too
on gambitchess.com you find the move-only file of all games in the book. This is OK with copyright law. saves you the bother of typing it in yourself in your database on PC or palmtop.

The book gives very good insight on chess in historical perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Material - Intermediate to Advanced Players
This is a great little study book. It covers a wide variety of lessons; endgames, pawn structures, attacking formations, positional evaluation techniques, etc.

This is NOT a basic textbook for beginner players. the material in this book is probably most useful for players from around 1500 - 2000 USCF. (The book states 1700-2050).

Each lesson is self-contained and can be reviewed in an hour or two. Most of the lessons give a little history regarding a particular player or playing style.

I could not disagree more with the reviewer who downgraded the book because of the history lesson - one who is ignorant of history is bound to repeat it. Also, I know for a fact that most Grandmaster players are very familar with chess history- especially the classic games played by the masters of yester year.

I wholeheartidly endorse this book - each chapter is almost like a seperate chess lesson given by your "tutor".

1-0 out of 5 stars Whoo hoo: Chess HISTORY!!!
Don't bother wasting your time and money on this book. It is not worth either if you're looking to get better. All this book has in it is information about Chess "History" (the forfathers of the game, etc.) and some "basic" endgame knowledge.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring and overrated
We are so fascinated by Soviet stuff when it comes to chess. Most Soviet chess people exhibit all the humanity of a dead fish. This book is no exception; it will dryly put you to sleep. It is overrated and not important.Save your money. There are so many good chess books.Check out the lists along the sides of these reviews. Those are the classics. You will not find this book on any of them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Modern Openings
I found this to be an excellent book for someone looking to learn the main lines of major modern openings without getting lost in too many variations. If you're looking to develop an opening repertoire for tournament chess, this is a great book to start with. Then you can go and get other books with more details, variations and sample games. But this a great reference book for your chess library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not new material....or a even new book
This book is virtually an EXACT reprint of 'An Opening Repertoire for the Attacking Player' by Gufeld. It's available used on Amazon for as little as 2-3 dollars. The Gufeld version would even be preferred, as it's formatted a little differently which makes it easier to follow. You may think this book is newer, so it could be sort of an updated version perhaps? Not so. I found nothing updated from Gufeld. The actual material is fine. Like most opening books, you've got to try it out and see if you like it. Personally, I do. But do not buy it...the same book is available in a better format and for less money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For the Advanced Intermediate
This book is for the advanced intermediate chess player. He uses symbols rather than letters for algebraic notation. He uses "!" a lot and about half the time I was scratching my head wondering why.

Here's a tip for those lazy about setting up hundreds of positions on a board and playing out lines of play: most of the games are from the historical archive of masters that can be found on www.chesslab.com. Just type in the players' last names and select the historical archive (1485-1990) from the start position. Then select the game by date. They're really there. Then you can play the whole game by clicking a button and not have to set up the board. Also, you can see the whold game, while Littlewood usually only gives part of the middle game. He says "and white won comfortably" - I found it nice to be able to see how online.

He covers all the middle game topics: strategy and tactics, pawn structure, the king, and planning. He also has some self-test chess positions. If you're ready to really study chess, go for it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The book covers various aspects of the middle game: tactics and combinations, the pieces, pawns, strategy and planning. I didn't find it helpful.

First of all, this book isn't easy to use. Littlewood rarely gives complete games, so it requires a lot of setting up of positions to follow his examples.

Secondly, Littlewood's examples don't seem to really target the points he's trying to make. At one point, in a 4-5 page section on the Queen, he asks us not to over-estimate her power. Fair enough, but he has to give us 3-4 examples of Queenless positions to prove this. He even provides a full game in which the Queens go off the board early, but do we really need this to understand his point? Why didn't he use the game to illustrate something else? This is just one example; I could go on. Throughout the book, Littlewood's examples seem interchangeable because he never really focuses on what's salient about each. Its like he just says, "make moves like this, and you'll win."

It is possible that a stronger player (I'm only about 1300 USCF) would like this book, but I've heard it recommended for novices, and Littlewood even provides "hints for beginners" at the end of each chapter.... ... Read more

Excerpt: The Marshall Chess Club in New York City is one of the oldest and strongest chess clubs in the United States. It is a non-profit organization. It was a long-time rival of the Manhattan Chess Club, which was disbanded in 2002. The club was formed in 1915 by a group of players led by Frank Marshall. Some of the members of the club have been Reuben Fine, Edmar Mednis, James Sherwin, Larry Evans, Andy Soltis, Anthony Santasiere, Fred Reinfeld, Arthur Dake, Albert Simonson, Herbert Seidman, Stanley Kubrick, Hikaru Nakamura, Howard Stern, and Fabiano Caruana. The club had several temporary meeting places until it permanently moved to 23 West 10th Street in New York in 1931. The club occupies two floors of a townhouse that the club owns. Marshall was the leader of the club until his death in 1944, when his wife Caroline took over. Frank Brady was elected president in 2007. The club has been the site of several rounds of the U.S. Chess Championship, and Bobby Fischer played in the 1965 Capablanca Memorial Tournament being held in Havana, Cuba via teletype. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21902687 ...
