I'm probably a biography addict
I read quite a lot of biographies. Mainly celebrities, but a non-celebrity biography does tend to catch my eye. This author could actually be half a celebrity, as her daughter (although best known in the UK) is actually Martine McCutcheon (who has starred in EastEnders, and more worldwide, Love Actually). Following on from her daughter's biography, Jenny has given it a go, and she's got more of a life to talk about than her daughter did. (Yes I own that biography!)

Jenny has been through a hard life. Her dad regularly abused her and her two sisters, beat and abused his wife, and done things to his sons, which are never really touched upon. Her mother gets abused by her father, and gives birth to child after child, and they were never fed properly. The dad has since died, much to the delight of Jenny and her sister, although it is touched upon that the youngest sister had a relationship with the dad.

It's an awful book to try and read, although it's gripping at the same time. At least Jenny has something to talk about, unlike these Z list celebrities who release their first biography before they're out of their teens. It's a shocking book, but is a brilliant read, and well worth getting, if you want to read a decent biography. ... Read more

AMAZING BOOK!! and I am not even half way though
This book is already very goood and I just started reading it! the writer makes it very easy to picture each and every child it's alost as if I was there to see this classroom in action. Lat night I stayed awake just to finish the 3rd chaper and I can't wait to get back to reading it.

Enjoyable but much is doubtful
I gave this story 3 stars because I found it enjoyable to read but much of the details are strange and doubtful. In the first place, A child as neglected and abused as this would have ended up in foster care especially after the incident with her uncle. The incident with the uncle certainly could have happened but she would have ended up in a facility or foster care. A school system would never have a child waiting 2 hours at school for the high school bus. High school kids get out much earlier than grade school kids so I don't know where that all came from. A school district could not have a teacher stay 2 hours with one student because of liability and the teacher contract. A pricipal would never tolerate the professional boundries Ms. Hayden crossed. This certainly may have been an intelligent child but an IQ of 182? Come on. I guess it sold the book.

Fantastic.
I'm a sophomore in high school at an assembly one day, this book was mentioned. It seemed interesting so I bought a copy from on here. I must say this book was a fantastic read. Hayden as an author is wonderful and the story really caught my attention and grabbed hold of my heart. This was one of those books that I would not put down. A Valuable Tool
This book is educational and informative. It is for anyone involved in the social service field, and for anyone who works with child abuse and neglect on any level. I personally found the book to be an excellent reference tool, and solid teaching material.

This book lays out the definitions, current issues, and treatments surrounding child abuse and neglect. It also presents various models and perspectives and sums up different social theories; enhancing its title of "multidisciplinary approaches". Although the book discusses the need for a mutidisciplinary team approach,(and even devotes a chapter to the issue) it could have emphasized this to a greater degree and focused more upon conflict resolution among team members. Perhaps the authors could have created a uniform system for setting up a team of professionals with every suspected child abuse case from every point of entry within the group of professionals typically involved with a team. Also guidelines that could be adopted by the social service agencies involved. Maybe that will become the focus for another book. ... Read more

Good book
This is an informative book written by an expert in the subject of statutes of limitation [SOL] on sexual abuse against children.It was timely for me, as the Florida legislature had just passed a law doing away with SOL'S for the crime of sex abuse against children.I wrote to our Governor an urged him to sign the new legislation into law.Gov. Crist did sign the bill and it goes into effect on July 1, 2010.That's a god thing.

A Must Read if you care about children!
This book is all about changing the statute of limitations for victims of child abuse with a lot of background on all of the places and people it would impact. Well written and easily understandable.

Pretentious Cr*p
Ms. Hamilton is a lawyer intent to make a buck, plain and simple. She probably hates the Church, too, but that is besides the point. No priest or minister should abuse a minor. Simple. Nor should anybody else! That's where Ms. Hamilton's house of cards collapses completely. While she herself acknowledges that most child abusers are NOT clergy, but rather teachers, coaches, family members, she demonstrates no interest whatsoever to hold those accountable. Nor do her politician friends. After all, who wants to mess with the teachers? They vote for the same party that is beholden to the trial lawyers...

Must Read for lawmakers and general public
Marci Hamilton is so knowledgeable and experiencedin the field of child abuse. She identifies two of the culprits who constantly fight against child rights legisation: the catholic church and the insurance industry. She has surveyed statelaws regarding statute of limitation on bringing suits against pedofiles. It is also interesting how she has identified states that have taken a proactive position on children's rights and how legislators in a certain state have deemed dog health care issues more important than those of children. It is also distressing that our nationappears to be more concerned about adult protection rather than protecting our children. How sad. Hopefully this book will make an impact on legislators in our nation, both state and federal.

A Child Called "It"
This is an excellent novel. I am using it as an instructional tool for my 12th grade reading class and they are in love. THis is coming from a set of children that would not otherwise read. Total BS!
Children who are so traumatized, as Dave claims he was, do not have total recall of such abuse becuase their brain shuts out certain traumas in order to protect the child and have him become a survivor.There was no transition at all, he went from loving, happy homelife to hell in one short chapter!It did not have a ring of truth to it and therefore hit the trashcan after the second chapter.Shame on you for cashing in on such dribble when there are genuine children out there being abused for real!

I started reading this book and have to say it's pretty difficult to read and, at the same time, you cannot put it down.From pretty much the very beginning, the "hell" starts and it seems to never let up.One thing I don't understand is that this boy went to school with holes in his shoes and clothes and smelled and was very dirty and obviously not cared for with obvious wounds all over him (even a stab wound that the school saw!) and yet, it took the school quite a while to do something about this?Also, why in the hell would the school allow a smart boy to repeat a grade just because the mother wanted him to out of spite? And in addition, the father?He knew what was going on and let it happen and seemed to also be afraid of his wife?Some things kinda didn't make sense to me but maybe alcoholism, and he was also an alcoholic, make you go into denial or retreat or some such?I don't get it. Some things seem to be very unbelievable here? And WHY was this one child singled out to abuse and not the other kids?Don't get it. The book is mesmerizing though, but in a very sick way.Part of me wishes for the boy's/man's sake most of it was made up.

This book is a piece of garbage. It minimizes real abused children and quite frankly, it's just sick. I'm appalled that middle and high school student are required to read this waste of a tree.

From one survivor to all of us others....
As a survivor myself, I immediately felt a heart connection with Nicole like no other author I've read on this trajic subject.I found myself nodding my head throughout the whole book, identifying with the many horrific sins done to us at the hands of those we trusted.This is the testimony of a brave little girl, who dared as a young woman to expose her wounds and scars to Jesus.It is her account of how Jesus takes our tattered and broken hearts and heals them in ways human hands and hearts never could.You won't have to remain the same after investing this time with Nicole.

COMPLETE process of healing
I just wanted to say that this was a great book and a great resource for Christians dealing with abuse. When we adopted our boys three years ago and they started sharing with us their abuse we started looking for resources to help them and educate us on what to do to help them. Since then I've looked at and read a lot of stuff on abuse and unfortunately very few are faith based and don't have the healing message yours conveys. Powerful and soothing
I like the author's direct and passionate style. She holds nothing back and speaks about her own abuse. I am using the book and the journals for prison ministry, and Set Free has touched the hearts of its participants. Set Free begins by helping women feel worthy to call on God, and it encourages them to believe God has plans to give them a future. It's powerful but gentle and soothes hearts that are full of hurt. Jan Coates knows what it's like to hurt. In this book she talks about that awful topic of sexual abuse. She does it with fine writing and because she knows the issues faced by abuse survivors. The many stories in the book display a wide variety of responses to abuse. This is worth reading

a must read for anyone who was abused
This book very thoroughly explains what constitues abuse, the effects and what to do about it once you are an adult. Beverly Engel has a way of presenting the truth without glossing it over but without leaving the reader feeling like he or she is powerless to change the future. This book explains how the cycle of abuse continues from generation to generation and gives concrete things that you can do to get off the victim/aggressor merry-go-round. Extremely insightful and thorough.

This book would be a wonderful booklet
"Healing the Harm Done" covers a lot of ground.What's there is well written, and the author's compassion comes through clearly.If you are looking for an overview of the issues that will need to be addressed, especially with younger children, this book could be a good place to start.I work with teens and, unfortunately, anyone who works with teens has teens who have been sexually abused.I'm always on the lookout for tools and ways in which I can help facilitate healing.This book gives you information on the issues involved with healing and then recommends other books for parents to read to really facilitate the healing process.

The text itself is only about 35 pages altogether when you factor out the table of contents and the Spanish text.There are seven sections of information and suggestions.So, even though it's covering a lot of topics, each section is very short.This might be just what some parents need and want but I wish it would have been more clear to me before I bought the book.

"Healing the Harm Done" would be great as a booklet for police, doctors, and social workers (who might be able to buy the book in quantity) to hand out to parents as a jumping off point for information.(The book will tell you what to do, but doesn't always tell you how to do it.)For parents who want more detailed information, this may not be your best option.

I recommend that anyone considering buying this book read the excerpt.

Well Written
As far as books go I would have to say that this book, ranks up there as one of the best I have read. Extrememly well written. The author does an excellent job of pulling the reader in and making them understand. This book is in the same type of genre as two other books I have read that I find to be equally as good. Nightmares Echo and Courage to Heal. Each is excellent in its own right.

begining to heal.....a definite winner
i found the book, beginning to heal to be a definite winner....especially when a friend of mine asked for more information about child sexual abuse....and i knew that the larger book...the courage to heal...would be extremely overwhelming.....

it gave my friend enough information to realize that she had been doing all the right things for me....believing...listening....supporting...and the section for friends/family, etc....helped her out too...to know when to take time for herself...and how to do it without jepordizing our friendship.....i recommend this book to anyone who wants to know just a little about child sexual abuse.....but isn't prepared to read a huge book....*though courage to heal is a faboulus book...just can be intimdidating unless you are ready to confront it....*

Small but So Supportive ...
This title is small but packs alot of support and positive words toward the abuse victim. Chapter topics include HEALING IS POSSIBLE, THE DECISION TO HEAL, UNDERSTANDING THAT IT WASN"T YOUR FAULT, THE CHILD WITHIN andmore. All written with an under tone of support. There are also severalstories of abuse told from the surviving victims view. The title is filledwith insight and support and is best described as an excellent beginningpoint for those looking to heal. A very sensitive and difficult subjectthat is well addressed.

excellent first book for survivors
As a therapist working with a population of young adults, I frequently see young people who are just beginning to deal with the impact of childhood sexual abuse on their lives.I have been looking for something to helpintroduce and give some preparation to clients who are needing to beginthis difficult work. I love the book the Courage to Heal, but have at timesfelt it's very size was a bit overwhelming for individuals who were askingfor just some glimpse of what it might mean to start to confront theirhistory of abuse. This book fits the bill and I am so grateful for havingfound it. The book is compact and thus, not so intimidating. It distillsout some of the most important information found in the original Courage toHeal.
