5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of ideas for parents, caregivers, therapists and educators; for Early Intervention and beyond
This book covers both ASDs and Sensory Disorders, with a good section explaining how these affect children, which can be very helpful in demystifying the behaviors of children with these issues (especially important for parents like myself, who are new to this subject, with kids who are newly diagnosed or just getting diagnosed!); and this section is followed by a wealth of suggestions for activities to help kids who are affected by these issues reach their potential -- not only in overcoming these specific issues, but also in gaining social skills.

Included with the activities are suggestions for ways to modify them for single children or groups, or for children with specific preferences or quirks; and reading through this book will no doubt serve to inspire ideas for many other activities or modifications as well.

I would also like to note that, in my opinion, the title of this book does not do it justice, because "Early Intervention" implies (to me, at least) that the activities here are only for children under the age of 3-4; which is definitely not the case. Using the ideas presented here in group situations, many of these activities could continue to be enjoyable for several years beyond that age range, as a means of helping kids (particularly those with ASDs) gain or improve turn-taking, sharing and other social skills.

It is my opinion that parents, caregivers, therapists and educators can ALL benefit from this book, whether they are new to this area of study, or have years of experience; and it would be a valuable addition to any of their bookshelves, one that is sure to remain handy for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Early Intervention Games--recommended for non-therapists too
This book is a great resource for professionals who work with you children identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Sensory Processing Disorder. The author describes her orientation to working with children without focusing on the "disorders".I read the book as a former children's developmental intervention program coordinator and social worker.Ms. Sher's approach shares social work values of a strengths perspective and person-in-environment approach. She looks at the children's strengths and interests and engages children in their peer environment.
I re-read the book from the point of view of a former pre-school teacher, parent and current grandparent.I have highlighted activities for purposeful fun and skill development with my two developmentally normal preschool-aged grandchildren.
The first two chapters should be required reading for any professionals who work young children with an exceptionality diagnosis. Also, parents of a diagnosed child would find comfort and good philosophical modeling by identifying with the author's understanding and insights into the child's perceptual world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Games Lady Strikes Yet Again...Games Games and more Games!
Barbara has yet again come through with the goods. This new book is easy to read and full of fun ideas to help motivate children to want to learn. Already I have read the book cover to cover and am putting these ideas and games into practice. Motivation and maintaining motivation across the day with little ones can be hard, but thanks to this book and all these game ideas included in it - this job is a little easier! A must read for all working in this area! Thanks Barbara ;O)

Product Description
This workbook, based on a wide-ranging ten-year clinical study of anger and children by experts in the field, uses enjoyable games and exercises to teach the three critical components of parenting an angry child. The first component explores the concept of good parenting and how to recognize and resolve excess emotional baggage from the past that perpetuates the problem. The second shows how to understand, recognize, and deal with the anger a child expresses, and offers parents a base from which to teach anger management skills. The third component addresses how to listen without reacting to a child’s anger, how to find practical alternatives to anger, and how to resolve this difficult emotion within the family structure. Illustrations, charts and tables are included. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Families with Young Kids
I used this book while creating an anger management curriculum for 7th graders. While some of the book is much more applicable for young children, I used a lot of information for my students successfully, such as discovering from where anger stems. I think this book, full of games, exercises and poems as well as information for parents, is geared perfectly for little ones.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone
While the activities in this book may work for some people, I myself was put off by the often patronizing and otherwise corny tone. The focus of the book is on the entire family, which may be helpful for people with more dysfunctional family relationships. Even though I consider our family to have its share of "dysfunction," I couldn't relate our family to the six types of FAT or "Family Affective Themes," which sounded interesting to begin with but found nothing seemed to match up with the stated results or really make any sense as far as our family is concerned, therefore I questioned the validity of whether these categories are theoretical or oversimplified and whether they work in reality. If you believe your child's angry outbursts are the result of imitating behaviors learned at home then this book might be a good choice. As for our family, where the anger in one of our children seemed really "out of left field," the book that helped us is The Explosive Child: A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children by Ross W. Greene, which takes the perspective that angry explosive outbursts are triggered by an inability to handle changes and a tendency to become easily frustrated, comparing the deficit in these skills to more commonly understood "lags" in abilities such as reading or athletics. We also liked the workbook A Volcano in My Tummy: Helping Children to Handle Anger : A Resource Book for Parents, Caregivers and Teachers by Eliane Whitehouse and Warwick Pudney, which offers simple anger-related activities and advice for parents and teachers in a more straightforward and less condescending way.

Product Description

A lifesaving handbook for parents of children who are occasionally, or too often, “out of control” Includes a bound-in twenty-minute DVD featuring Dr. Kazdin and his staff illustrating key concepts of the Kazdin Method Most child-behavior books are filled with advice that sounds reasonable, fits with what parents already believe about child-rearing, and is—as Dr. Kazdin proves— guaranteed to fail. The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child makes available to parents for the first time Dr. Kazdin’s proven program—one backed up by some of the most long-term and respected research devoted to any therapy for children.
Kazdin shatters decades’ worth of accumulated myths about tantrums, time-outs, punishments fitting the crime, and much more. With the practicality of Ferber and the warmth of Brazelton, Kazdin leads parents through every step of the Kazdin Method in action—how to use tone of voice, when and how to touch, how to lead your child in a “practice” session, how to adjust your approach for different-age children, how to involve siblings, and more. The program is temporary, but the results are permanent—for very young children, adolescents, and even beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars an evidence-based method to help your child
I'm a psychologist and also am the parent of a difficult, defiant child. When I looked for help, I would only consider treatment that was backed by scientific evidence. This is the book that has it.I urge other parents to get this book rather than waste time and money on books and therapies that have no evidence that they work.Granted, this book isn't written for professionals, and so there's no exhaustive list of actual research studies that back up this method, but the evidence is definitely there.Kazdin's treatment is listed in the Cochrane library of evidence-based treatments, and there are very few other treatments of this caliber. So, please, if you're struggling with your child, choose this type of treatment over others.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child: With No Pills, No Therapy, No Contest of Wills
Bought as a gift for a very good friend so I cannot comment on its merits therefore I checked the middle star.

2-0 out of 5 stars not very helpful
this book is so boring it is hard to follow. i trudged through it and it is not very helpful. the reward chart is a big hassle although my kids like it. the video is just as boring and what's up with dr. kazdins skin color?? he looks like an oompa loompa. it does not really explain why your child is so defiant. i got the book, 10 days to a less defiant child. it was much better. it explains why your child acts the way they do and what to do about it without a big chart system, which i've been to lazy to keep up with. i don't yell at all anymore and my daughter is much happier and easier to deal with (not perfect, but much better)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kasdin Method for parenting
Excellent book. Answered all my questions and gave me the answers of what to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars I use this in my practice...
Alan Kazdin is one of a half-dozen psychologists who have devoted their lives to research and treatment of problem children. This book has been a godsend to dozens of parents I see in my clinical practice. In fact, I buy it in quantity, stock it in my office, and sell it to them AT COST so they can refer to it at home.I have gotten very good feedback.

Who WOULD benefit from this book? The answer is in the title:parents of DEFIANT children. These are children who are cognitively normal, not involved in crime or criminal threat groups, and not addicted to drugs, yet are defiant, argumentative, disobedient, and generally tiresome around the house. For the millions of parents who have ended up with children they just don't like, this book contains the best parenting advice available.

Some children have special problems, such as autistic-spectrum disorders, ADHD, sensory integration disorder, and the like. The bottom line is, any child who does not respond positively to the program in this book (fully implemented, not attempted halfway or half-heartedly) should be taken for a psychological evaluation to determine what factors play into the discipline problems other than parenting practices. For example, ADHD can't be parented away, but if it is PROPERLY medicated, then the remaining behavior problems can be parented away using the principles in this book or similar books.

For children with attention problems I recommend and use Russell Barkley's books on the defiant child and defiant teen, as Barkley has specialized in working with this population. For children with conduct disorder, there's almost no hope of success unless the parents work with a psychologist who is trained in the behavior protocols designed specifically for conduct-disordered children -- and even these may be insufficient.A parent with a complex problem such as this should never just buy a book and try to treat the problem at home, any more than they would buy a home surgical guide and take out their own child's appendix.

Bottom line:if your child is driving you nuts, but has no obvious really serious problems (no probation record, can pay attention in class, and such), this book is an excellent resource.Buy it, read it, and apply it.If it doesn't work, find a psychologist who specializes in behavior problems in children, who knows Barkley's and Kazdin's work, and who is familiar with diagnosis and treatment of a variety of childhood disorders -- NOT a psychologist who will do play therapy or just talk to the kid, but one who follows specific treatment protocols for serious behavior problems. If you can't find one, either go through the website for the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, or the American Board for Clinical and Child Psychology, www.clinicalchildpsychology.com.They will help you find someone who specializes in this challenging domain.

And good luck with your children. ... Read more

Product Description
PERFECT FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD PROFESSIONALS, CAREGIVERS AND PARENTS ALIKE, this book is a user-friendly, non-technical guide to a child’s development, beginning before birth through age eight. This is an easy-to-use tool for evaluating developmental milestones, growth patterns, daily routines, and activities. These authors are both experienced in teaching, child care issues, and have authored professional references on the topic of child development.Amazon.com Review
One of the many side effects of becoming a parent is the ever-larger stack of books about children that it's all too difficult to find time to finish reading. By the Ages is one quick-reference manual that cuts to the chase and supplies parents with basic, helpful information about what parents can expect from their child's social, intellectual, and physical development from the first few months after conception through the eighth year. At once fascinating and pragmatic, the majority of the book is presented in lists and bullet points that manage to balance thoroughness with brevity.

The first two chapters are a mini course in developmental psychology, complete with multiple-choice tests at the end. Explaining everything from age-level expectancies to the interrelatedness of development areas, these 35 pages define important terms, provide examples, and explain a few basics, like why it's flat-out impossible to toilet train an infant. Further chapters are separated by age; if you're the parent of a 2-year-old with another child approaching age 5, you'll know exactly which pages to head for first. This book is as well-designed for caregivers as it is for parents; the "special tips" section in each chapter is addressed to both, and suggests ideas like strategically planting a toddler's favorite toys throughout a room to help encourage crawling. Also included for each age is a short list of what a typical day might bring: how much sleep to expect, how many calories are needed, and what sort of general behaviors a caregiver might expect. Whether you're an expectant first-time parent or are well on your way to sending your child off to kindergarten, this little manual is full of simple guidelines that even the busiest parents have time to check out. --Jill Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for New Parents!
Other than the scary clown hair on the baby on the cover--this is a really helpful guide to a new baby's cognitive and physical development! It's much more practical than some of the other more popular titles that I have read. The information is very clear, concise and extremely well organized. It breaks a baby's developmental stages down into 3-month blocks, which makes more sense to me than the month-by-month formats of other books--since babies all develop at a slightly different pace. I highly recommend this title for all parents who are interested in better understanding how their baby is developing! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
As a school psychologist I do some counseling with children and cognitive behavior theory is something I greatly utilze in practice. This is a great resource to work with different age groups and I have even given this to a collegue when she began a slightly new career venture. She also thinks it comes in handy in practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for beginners
I thought that the book provided good examples. I work with adolescent offenders and this book was helpful in providing ideas that could work with them (sometimes). Well naturally they would not work on every adolescent that came through but it was good experimentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful book; exactly what i needed
Really good book. Esseential resource for all clinicians

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Learning Tool
I'm still working my way through the book; but what I like is that its an easy read and you can incorporate it in to practice as you are going along. Its an excellent way to learn specific ways to use Cognitive Therapy with both children and adolescents. They do a good job of disinguishing between the two, which is important when you work with the two age groups. If you like specific techniques, and easy to follow explanations this is a worth while book.

Product Description
Among evidence-based therapies for children and adolescents with oppositional, aggressive, and antisocial behavior, parent management training (PMT) is without peer; no other treatment for children has been as thoroughly investigated and as widely applied. Here, Alan E. Kazdin brings together the conceptual and empirical bases underlying PMT with discussions of background, principles, and concepts, supplemented with concrete examples of the ways therapists should interact with parents and children.

The second half of the book is a PMT treatment manual. The manual details the particulars of the therapy: what is done to and by whom, what the therapist should say, and what to expect at each stage of treatment. It also contains handouts, charts, and aides for parents. A companion web site (www.oup.com/pmt) provides additional resources for clinicians. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DBT for Children and Adolescents
There are not very many treatment manuals for children and adolescents that incorporate strands of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. This book utilizes exercises suitable for the individual therapy sessions and group DBT sessions for young clients. They are organized by problems that difficult clients often face and apply modified DBT skills suitable for practice with children and adolescents. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner who has been in the clinical field over 40 years and who has run many adult DBT groups, I highly rate this book and its interventions for younger clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
This author takes Linehan's 6 problems faced by those who have not learned coping skills and provides interventions suitable for children and adolescents. For example, for those with unrelenting crises, the author provides problem-solving skills for young children and for teens. For self-invalidation, the author uses cognitive behavior threrapy schema change methods to assist young clients. The interventions are some that mental health workers used at the clinic where I am a director and they saw improvement in the functioning of both children and teens. For real practitioners this book is useful and the interventions produce results if followed in a systematic manner.

2-0 out of 5 stars A few useful activities, but...
This is the first review I've written for Amazon and I only felt compelled because of how poorly edited and put together this book is. Yes, this book has several useful activities and notes about DBT. However, the composition of the book is really shoddy. It looks as if slides have been copied from a mishmash of Powerpoint presentations to make a book (there is a reference to information "in the next slide" in one of the paragraphs). Information -- whole pages-- is repeated in separate sections of the book. Other information seems jammed together or totally disorganized. Many of the activities have not been adapted to, or are totally irrelevant for, children and adolescents. And the writing is poor and poorly edited. Here's a helpful paragraph: "Teaching stress tolerance takes many forms. As counselors, we need to teach stress tolerance to children and adolescents." (p. 116)

In short, if you are desperate for some activities to practice DBT with Children and Adolescents, this book will suffice. But if you can find this information somewhere else, bypass this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good how to manual
This is a pretty good book. I think it delivers what it promises. it's kinda a quick overview/manual book. I am the parent of a child with Autism and I am always looking for ways to connect with my son. I am always searching for how to communicate with him, how to direct him to follow directions and how to make connections with him.

This book covers some straightforward tips, reminders and tools for parents. Kinda like a high-level how-to book. and it explains the theory behind the ideas it advocates.

The book is kinda thin and has lots of space in the margins, so don't expect an overabundant wealth of information. But this was a nice compliment to my arsenal of ideas on how to communicate with my son. ... Read more

Product Description

All childcare professionals were children once, and how their parents responded to their emotional expressions affects how they respond to emotional expressions by children in their own care.

“Don’t Get So Upset!” examines the uncomfortable emotions providers feel—and the inappropriate ways they may respond—when children exhibit strong feelings, especially anger, fear, and grief. The book challenges teachers to reflect on their own emotional histories and to find strategies for responding to children in ways that support children’s emotional health and development. It also examines how gender, culture, and societal roles can impact providers’ responses to children’s emotional expressions.

Any parent concerned about her child's emotions or behavior has enough to deal with. Navigating the psychotherapy world can be confusing and frustrating. Dr. Curtis provides a very thoughtful and thorough guide to getting the answers and help you need. The Glossary of Terms is especially helpful and the section on Parent Resources is invaluable. As a parent and a child psychologist I highly recommend this book.

At what point do you seek professional help when a child is acting, by his parent's standards, weird? "Understanding Your Child's Puzzling Behavior: A Guide for Parents of Children with Behavioral, Social, and Learning Challenges" is a parent's guide to understanding a child's strange behavior and whether they should intervene or it is simply another kind of normal. Suggesting that parents never go for short term solutions, how to look at why the child acts the way they act, and when is the line to seek psychiatric assistance? "Understanding Your Child's Puzzling Behavior: A Guide for Parents of Child with Behavioral, Social, and Learning Challenges" is essential for any concerned parent who doesn't get their child's behavior and for community library parenting collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bright light...
Trying to find your way through the myriad of advice about how to parent your child can be overwhelming on the best of days. The actual child can get lost in all of the ideas/philosophies/beliefs. That truth is amplified if your child has any sort of behavior that seems to be outside of the "norm".Dr. Curtis guides parents in an honest, nonjudgmental way toward the avenues which can best help them and ultimately, most importantly, help the child get the support he/she needs. His assurance that positive progress can be made is a gift. That these are not "problem" children who have something wrong with them... a message those of us with atypical children are confronted with all too often, but that they are children who merit more support, understanding and sensitivity.Dr. Curtis knows that children with puzzling behavior operate within a family, and that the parents, who love these kids more than anything and are trying to help them to the best of their ability, need guidance and support too.His holistic approach is truly a relief to those of us who deal daily with the beauty, challenge, heartbreak and joy of raising these unique little beings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will Transform the Way You Relate to your Child
This is the fourth book I've read by Dr.Campbell, and each ofhis books repeat the same concepts, but with variations in word-use, and differences in focus.Regardless, I like the fact that each book reinterates the same, doable, logical and recallable points that I was able to apply immediately. My goal is to be so familiar w/ Dr. C's techniques that it flows out of me naturally, that it becomes a part of me.

Since starting his books, including this one, I've been able to manage my anger during tense, frustrating moments, I've been able to identify my children's needs more objectively and act accordingly. I've searched for opportunities to give my children what they inherently need before they start "acting up."The peace and pattern of our home since then has been dramatic.

In a nutshell, this book discusses HOW to fill a child's emotional tank since the majority of bad behavior stems from an empty tank. That entails positive eye contact, physical touch and focused attention. Then he stresses that discipline is not punishment but training. And you can train by example, role modeling, verbal instruction, written requests, teaching, and during play.He discussed how adults are to respond to misbehavior. That is, by asking yourself what does my child need?Is his emotional tank low?Is he okay physically (not ill or tired)? Then you can decide if child is truly misbehaving, which he calls defiance. He defined true misbehavior as being out of control, being defiant and challenging parental authority, all of which isnot to be tolerated. Then he went on to explain the various ways of controlling behavior, the best and first method to attempt is to make a request (can you please clean that up?), then commands, then gental physical manipulation (leading toddler away from the fire), then punishment, and lastly behavioral modification. He urges parents to be proactive rather than reactive. To explain your reasonings to your children, as well as the sequence of your thought processes so they can relate to you better and learn as well.He also went into dealing with your child's anger, and to see it as an opportunity to train, and not to get reactively angry back at your child.

There's so much more in the book, but those were some of the points I've outlined in the back of the book for quick reference as a refresher.I wish that all would-be parents and already parents would read this book. When I look at my past mistakes that could have been avoided, and opportunities lost where I could have used as training moments, I wished that I had read the book before.

Awesome book.A must read, for the sake of your children.

2-0 out of 5 stars dissapointed
As a Christian parent, I was dissapointed in this book. I believe Dr Campbell is correct with his concepts...but there were not nearly enough clear, practical examples for me. For instance, he mentions that "making requests" is a positive way to control a child's behavior but never gives one example for what a "request" would sound like. I also found this true as he discussed anger management.
I think he has a great concept but there just wasn't enough practical advise and examples for me. I also felt there was a depressing tone to the book as he discussed all of the societal influences at work against the family today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific reading for Christian parents.
In Relational Parenting, Dr. Ross Campbell teaches Christian parents how to build relationships with their children by anticipating the child's needs, rather than merely reacting to the child's behavior. Dr. Campbell asserts that the underpinning of a genuinely meaningful relationship with achild is unconditional love. Only this will nurture the child emotionallyand spiritually. It is also essential for the Christian parent tounderstand that discipline is not synonymous with punishment. A parent'sconsistent expression of love must adapt to the age and developingpersonality of the child, and consists of meeting their emotional andnurturance needs, giving them loving training and discipline, providingphysical and emotional protection, teaching and modeling anger management.Relational Parenting offers a common sense alternative to the traditionalbehavior modification approach of secular parenting. Relational Parentingis highly recommended reading for all who are anticipating or newlyexperiencing parenthood. ... Read more
