Product Description

Children and adolescents deemed "out of control" by parents and educators are among the most commonly referred for professional care. Increased professional and public interest in these children has sparked a proliferation of research focusing on etiologic, diagnostic, and research issues of disruptive behavior disorders. Accordingly, the empirical knowledge base has grown rapidly in richness and complexity. Bringing clinical practice up to date with these many new advances in an unusually accessible format, DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR DISORDERS IN CHILDREN presents a practical, psychometrically sound, treatment-relevant method of assessment that reflects the state of the art.The book opens with detailed descriptions of the Disruptive Behavior Disorders that encompass the DSM-III-R subtypes of Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Conduct and Oppositional Defiant Disorders. For easy reference, the following four chapters separately cover interviews, evaluation, treatment, and integrating assessment. Offering valuable explication of the interview process, one chapter covers the parent-child interview, clinical interview, and the categories and rationale for inclusion. Evaluation procedures are discussed in a chapter that evaluates parent, family, and teacher questionnaires, as well as self-report, laboratory measurements, and direct observation. The chapter on treatment options addresses such topics as education, pharmacological management, parent training, cognitive-behavioral self-control training, and family systems therapy. Using illustrative case examples, the chapter on integrating assessment outlines a functional assessment protocol, and describes how to: establish and monitor drug efficacy; select and implement psychosocial interventions; and choose appropriate educational interventions.

Providing the interdisciplinary professional community withproven, practical, and useful assessment strategies for these too commonly encountered problems, DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR DISORDERS IN CHILDREN is an invaluable resource for a wide array of practitioners. With its user-friendly format, clinicians who provide services to children and adolescents who suffer from these disorders will want to keep it close at hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good research, good opinion, factually based, fairly good suggestions
Armstrong has the right idea. His research on the useof medication is excellent. That children don't need the ADHD or ADD label, and that there is a lot that parents can do to help children to overcome ADHD without medication is the perfect message. The suggestions that Armstrong gives will work. They help parents to see where they can make adjustments so that children can overcome ADHD without meds. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, do buy this book. It is well worth it. The one area where the book falls is a little short is in its 50 suggestions, that is, following the suggestions will help. I would suggest purchasing also, Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook or on Kindle Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook for a more complete idea list for parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
This book has been one of my favorites for over 10 years.I have worked with alot of students with ADHD and this book is very helpful for parents.

I use the principals in this book to help my own little boy.

There is a section on a good breakfast and a bad breaksfast. One parent was worried about her child's concentration in school and when I asked what he had for breakfast it was on the bad breakfast list.

There is a section that recommends different classical music songs that can help a child feel better when he or she is angry.

I like the section on different hobbies and activities that you can help your child develop.

There is a section on surrounding your child with his favorite color for his school supplies.

The author has a short section on recommending the Feingold diet.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to help their child succeed in school and in life.

4-0 out of 5 stars The myth of ADD chile: 50 ways to improve
The book has most of the info a parent can understand and how to control the diet and other issues with the kids...i only read 1/2 of it until now..but i found it to be very interesting with the basic and detailed info that it had...

5-0 out of 5 stars Another point of view
Is a very helpful way to deal with "ADD". I agree with the author that there are several ways for us to learn and experiment our world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I read this book before medicating my son
After being told by my son's second grade teacher that she thought my son had ADD, my husband and I took him to three different professionals. The first two wanted to medicate him.The third tested him and gave us this book to read.It turned out that our son had many allergies to both foods and environmental items. He also was above average intelligence and was bored with his classwork. We bought a computer and got him learning software. We also signed him up for piano lessons and had him read many books. We took care of his allergies through diet and shots. He is now a high school sophomore who is in all honors classes. He is planning on going to school to become a surgeon. Please take the time to investigate all your options before going straight to the Ritalin. Some children will still need the medication but use that as your last resort.Another good book to read is "Is This Your Child?" by Dr. Doris Rapp. She discusses the allergy aspect to behavior problems. ... Product Description
For parents, teachers, and other professionals seeking practical guidance about ways to help children with learning problems, this book provides a comprehensive look at learning differences ranging from dyslexia to dysgraphia, to attention problems, to giftedness. In The Mislabeled Child, the authors describe how a proper understanding of a childs unique brain-based strengths can be used to overcome many different obstacles to learning. They show how children are often mislabeled with diagnoses that are too broad (ADHD, for instance) or are simply inaccurate. They also explain why medications are often not the best ways to help children who are struggling to learn. The authors guide readers through the morass of commonly used labels and treatments, offering specific suggestions that can be used to help children at school and at home. This book offers extremely empowering information for parents and professionals alike. The Mislabeled Child examines a full spectrum of learning disorders, from dyslexia to giftedness, clarifying the diagnoses and providing resources to help. The Eides explain how a learning disability encompasses more than a behavioral problem; it is also a brain dysfunction that should be treated differently. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic
After having a frustrating couple of years at school with one of my children we (almost by accident) had vision test performed and this opened the door to another world that at first was daunting.

This book and the data contatined have been invaluable, the understanding myself and spouse have now about the issues/problem of our child and how to help are well worth the purchase price of this books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent message
The issue of labeling children and, really, anyone with mental illness, is a serious one that anyone who is confronted with mental health issues for themselves or their child needs to consider. Labeling a child can affect their self-image. For some children, they repeat over and over in their mind, with their heads down, "I have ADHD," or even worse, "I am ADHD," "my ADHD," "I am bipolar," an even more common expression. With the label of bipolar, all engines stop, and everything goes in reverse. In other words, the label bipolar, is rather damning. There is no need to fight, no need to make any changes, simply give in to the label, resign, and take your sedating drugs for the rest of your life. That's basically the ultimate level of labeling. With ADHD there is always some chance that a child might outgrow it.

That is why books like this, as well as the excellent book from Scott Shannon on this subject, Please Don't Label My Child: Break the Doctor-Diagnosis-Drug Cycle and Discover Safe, Effective Choices for Your Child's Emotional Healthand the work of SharnaOlfmanNo Child Left Different (Childhood in America)Bipolar Children: Cutting-Edge Controversy, Insights, and Research (Childhood in America)are necessary. It keeps the psychiatric witch doctors in check and gives parents a second opinion.

From, Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook
Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook

There is a lot parents can do for children to help them overcome ADHD, depression, and even bipolar disorder. The books on this page can help parents to do so. I prefer Scott Shannon's book, to the Eide's. The Eide's book also has much value, the Shannon book is a bit more refined and has a lot of practical value. I don't go for the homeopathic route for mental illness, but besides that, Scott Shannon pretty much hits the nail on the head, and has all the bases covered if one is considering ADHD and bipolar disorder. For a more inclusive discussion of the subject, the Eide's book is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Important Book for any parent
This is such a fantastic book for parents, teachers, and medical personel.I can't give it enough praise. My son has some language delay, but is young yet.No one thus far has been able to really help me clear my confusion about what is going on with him. What I love about this book is that it has helped me to figure out how Nick learns, and what I can do to help him learn and work his short term and long term memory.Nick has auditory problems that I am trying to clear.I love that this book can generalize the different learning disorders and put specific interventions for the parent to help their child.

The only problem with this book..is that it is very detailed in how the memory works, descirbes in detail how childern learn, and it can be difficult/overwhelming to get through this book.I do believe it is very important to read it throughly to get the most out of it, but I want to get through it quickly.I have found I can only read alittle bit at a time.So far this has been my favorite book with specific things you can do to work your child's learning center...the brain.Loved it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for any teacher's tool box
This easy to follow book, and quick reference tool should be REQUIRED reading for all teachers, school administrators and school psyche/counseling personnel.

This publication explains common sensory issues and how those can manifest in behaviors outside of and within the school setting.

For parents of any child - make it one of your MUST-READ titles. You will understand your child with a whole new dimension, and most importantly - know how to help them maximize their own potential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get past the first chapter it's worth it...

4-0 out of 5 stars Does a good job of addressing behaviour problems
Well done.It is a good resource for parents and teachers alike.Practical with ready-to-photocopy pages so that you can start working right away.Obviously written by someone who knows Autism.I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its all in the cover :-)
I picked up this interesting book at Hastings(Kansas). Our 5 yr old autistic son spotted me looking through it. He right away noticed the pencil on the cover. He spent 25 minutes just trying to figure out HOW TO MAKE THE PENCILS go the same way, this drove him absolutely crazy. I really got some great and useful information from this nicely put book. Very rarely do we ever find books for our 'highly functioning' autistic children. Thanks for writing this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebecca Moyes did it again
Finding information to assist children with High-Functioning Autism/Asperger Syndrome can be challenging, at best, but Rebecca Moyes' book leads you through the maze with sound steps to help not only the parent but the educator.
I would recommend this book to parents, educators, and health care workers, as well as, lay people interacting with our children.
Ms. Moyes starts with a fabulous cover of colored pencils in a row. The pencil in the middle is upside down. It is yellow and bright but different than the rest. Not wrong, just different. An individual that shines if understood.
Ms. Moyes balances the line between parents and educators, explaining that "teachers really do want to help our children;but they need the training and support to be able to do an effective job". She notes that "if parents and teachers can learn and truely accept and appreciate the individuality of these children, they can open themselves up to a wonderful, enriching expirience".
Her chapter's are clear and consise including possible causes of misbehavior, antecedent strategies,as well as ways to motivate and reward our children. Ms. Moyes also includes how to evaluate the effectiveness of these interactions.
Any person that cares for or teaches our High-functioning Autism/Asperger Syndrome child should read this book.
Thank you Ms. Moyes. ... Read more

Product Description

Dr. Laura Nathanson wrote The Portable Pediatrician to help parents find the joy in parenting and gain the confidence to quickly and easily assess their child's development, medical symptoms, and behavioral problems. Parents can't always visit their pediatrician every time they have a question, but fortunately with this book they have the next best thing.

The Portable Pediatrician, one of the few child-care books written by a practicing pediatrician, offers authoritative and practical advice on:

  • Keeping up with, or even one step ahead of, your child's rapidly changing needs
  • Setting limits before the one year birthday
  • Planning the arrival of the next baby in the family
  • Coping with your own as well as with your child's separation anxiety
  • Dealing with the four I's: illnesses, injuries, immunizations, and insurance coverage
  • Getting prompt medical attention for serious crises -- and what to do in the meantime
  • Preventing childhood obesity and eating disorders later
  • Confronting complex behavior and medical problems, including ADD, autism, asthma, oppositional behavior (including potty resistance)

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic but flawed
I really do love this book. It's full of great info, and she delivers it with gentle humor.

However, I agree with other reviews saying that it can be tricky to find specific info about injuries while trying not to freak out -- lots of flipping back and forth from the index to various pages. The book really seems more for reading and learning ahead of time, not in-the-moment "so do I call the doctor or what?!" type reference.

I also find some of her opinions about breastfeeding to be not well balanced. For example, she places a lot of emphasis on not breastfeeding through the night due to the risk of cavities. That's pretty tricky if your child gets teeth early, or has other reasons for continuing to feed on demand past the four or six month mark. Plus there doesn't appear to be any proven link between breastmilk and cavities if you consult more authoritative lactation-specific sources like LLL or [...]. Pediatricians are notorious for their lack of thorough lactation training, and her support for breastfeeding seems lukewarm to me.

She recommends Ferber, which is effective for many parents but still controversial, with little couching as a straight opinion and little discussion of other valid approaches.

All in all though, this is still a go-to book at our house. We just ignore the parts that don't jibe with our parenting philosophies and what we know about our child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book - a must have for new parents
This book is like the Bible for raising kids.Raising kids is challenging enough, but we have found that the guidance in this book helped us "get ahead" by helping us lay a solid foundation early: nutrition, setting age appropriate limits early, strategies for dealing with oppositional behavior (terrible 2's) before it ever has a chance to start (again, getting ahead), emotional, cognitive, physical development.Life is more pleasant.I feel that we are not facing the regular uphill battles with our kids that it seems other parents who just wing it face. The first part of the book is split into "chapters" that discuss each age range, give strategies, milestones, advice in detail. This is what we found so helpful. The rest is simply a great reference in case your kid gets croup or gets stung by a bee or falls or whatever.I hate reading, but even I thought it was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource
This book is an excellent resource for parents.I have given this gift to many many friends!Thank you to Dr. Nathanson!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars life saver!
This is by far the most valuble book I referenced as I embarqued on being a new mom. My son is 4 1/2 and I still use it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful gift for a new parent
I received this as a gift when my son was born.My first reaction was - you expect me to have time to read this??! It's as thick as a phone book! But my friend said his wife swore by it, so I gave it a try. It's broken down by age groups, so you can just read small sections at a time with the information that you want right now.I love the portrait of the age - it's dead on.Her advice on how to deal with oppositional behavior and setting limits is invaluable. The medical portions on how to diagnose all the various rashes, coughs, etc. is wonderful.I highly recommend this book and now I give it as a first time parent gift at baby showers!:) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
This book is wonderful. My husband and I were both raised in homes where spanking and talking down to was the primary form of discipline and we both have always struggled with self-esteem and other issues. We have agreed that we want to use a different approach with our two year old boy, treating him with respect and being sensitive to his feelings, but as far as discipline, we have tried everything and although he responds to some things, nothing seems to fit with us. When I found this book the title alone was like cool water and the inside is even better. There are so many wonderful techniques and the author explains the rationale behind each one and gives real examples as well. Some of these techniques are hard and require self-control of the parent but after 3-4 times it works. So don't give up! Also the age group is directed at school age children although there are some references to toddlers, but most of the techniques can be used on the littler ones if they are simplified a bit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars organized way of tackling distractibility
I bought the book when the teachers told me for the fourth year in a row that my child was having problems focussing. After taking my son to the doctor for the third time, I didn't think my son had ADHD and I wasn't ready to medicate him. I found that the author's approach was spot on to what I had found to have worked. His day-by-day chapters organize the book nicely; Chapter 6 (Perils with Peers) exactly described what I had observed. His explaination of how distractible children perceive their world, and how they can get discouraged and "stressed out" is very helpful. This book helps with an organized approach to help change the behaviour.

1-0 out of 5 stars I wasted my money buying this book.
This is an extremely simplistic book, written for people who have done no previous reading on the topic. There is nothing new inside it. Moreover, I feel like I am being talked down to. For example, in the section on homework, the author describes three types of parents, the "passive," the "sledgehammer", and the "calm, firm, noncontrolling." The way the book is written, the reader is either passive or sledgehammer, and the goal is to be the third. How simplistic is that! Perhaps there are a few people who can relate to being passive or sledgehammer-like, but most people are more complex, and many of us have tried to be the third for a long time--and that hasn't made the homework any easier. Tips for getting the kid to do his/her homework are nothing that I haven't already tried. Hire a tutor. Keep organized notebooks. Find out the homework policy. Monitor your child's homework. Nothing new or revelatory. I wish I didn't waste my time or money here.

5-0 out of 5 stars You're not alone!
I've read many, many books on ADHD and distractibility (Hallowell/Ratey, Murphy, etc.). While those books supplied much-needed background info -- and I urge you to read them as well -- this book gives you ACTUAL STEPS TO TAKE when -- or before -- you're at wit's end.

My creative, intelligent, distractible son has had a lot of the issues described in this book: social interaction, homework trouble, depression and confidence. Although this is a "10-day" program, I urge you to read the entire book first, just to get an overview. It's full of great insight and will help you understand why/how your child learns differently.

I"m a "Type A" mom -- a list-maker, neat freak, get-it-done-now person -- and it's literally taken years to understand my son. This book gave me concrete ways to help my child navigate a world that's not set up for his way of approaching things.

NOTE: Check out "Right Brained Children in a Left Brained World" as well, if your child is particularly creative and "visual" as well as being distractible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Suggestions
This book is great for that parent who is at their wits end with their kids behavior issues... if you are tired of yelling, threatening, spanking etc.. and having it go NO WHERE!!Then read this book. Nothing works all of the time but this book gave me "his" view. How he is thinking/reasoning and suggestions on how to deal with it.I don't have to yell(unless it's to get everyone's attention)I make suggestions and try and get him to tell me what the problem is or how to fix it. It doesn't work all the time but it does help considerably!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for my 6 year old boy!
I bought 10 days to a Less Distracted Child at the same time as 10 days to a Less Defiant Child. I decided to read less distracted first, because frankly, I was angry with my 6-year old son. He is in kindergarten, reading at a high second-grade level, can add and subtract, and was getting daily reports saying he was NOT completing his work at school. My very bright son was getting labeled a trouble-maker and a "slow" child. I took his actions as defiance, but after reading Dr. Bernstein's book, I realize he is just EXTREMELY distractable. And, I really recognized myself in his descriptions too. On both sides - the exhausted, over-reacting parent and the distracted little kid.

As a parent with ADHD, it is highly likely my son has it as well. This book helped me to slow down and recognize that my son is trying his best, butcompletely lacks the skills to know how to keep himself on track. And that is my job as his parent to teach him.

This book is very easy to read, the steps are easy to follow, (even for a very distractable mom like me), and they make an IMMEDIATE difference. Myson started bringing home silver stars (the highest they givefor behavior)the day after I started using the steps in the book. I highly recommendthis book to any parent who is struggling with a child who is under-performing . Also, if you have a defiant child, maybe you should read this book first and see if they are really just distracted. ... Read more

Product Description

What′s an explosive child? A child who responds to routine problems with extreme frustration-crying, screaming, swearing, kicking, hitting, biting, spitting, destroying property, and worse. A child whose frequent, severe outbursts leave his or her parents feeling frustrated, scared, worried, and desperate for help. Most of these parents have tried everything-reasoning, explaining, punishing, sticker charts, therapy, medication-but to no avail. They can′t figure out why their child acts the way he or she does; they wonder why the strategies that work for other kids don′t work for theirs; and they don′t know what to do instead.

Dr. Ross Greene, a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: these kids aren′t attention-seeking, manipulative, or unmotivated, and their parents aren′t passive, permissive pushovers. Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach to parenting.

Throughout this compassionate, insightful, and practical book, Dr. Greene provides a new conceptual framework for understanding their difficulties, based on research in the neurosciences. He explains why traditional parenting and treatment often don′t work with these children, and he describes what to do instead. Instead of relying on rewarding and punishing, Dr. Greene′s Collaborative Problem Solving model promotes working with explosive children to solve the problems that precipitate explosive episodes, and teaching these kids the skills they lack.

Amazon.com Review
Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows ifthey've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorlyunderstood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Yearsafter toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a fewunlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "didwrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms andlabels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveriesabout the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development is alternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatric psychologist who also teaches atHarvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cutthrough the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parentsof explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has theadvantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, andsympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who arenot chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through theentire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and childrenis interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understandingthe origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies foravoidance. Although pharmacological treatment is not the book's focus, there is a chapter on drug therapies. --Richard Farr ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents of a bipolar child or teen!
I am currently about half way through this book.It is a perfect dead on description of my teenager who is bipolar. She is in the depression phase of bipolar right now but has been in the manic phase in the past. This book has been a big help for me.It has alot of good info on how to handle a bipolar child.Definitely one to add to the parents of a bipolar child arsenal!

2-0 out of 5 stars Sucker punched
Was told by our family therapist to get this book.Ordered this one, not knowing it was the First Edition published 10-years prior.Make sure to check the edition. The newest is 2010.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb Toolbox for EVERY Parent
Regardless as to how your child behaves, Ross Greene's work is an exceptional set of tools for improving that child's problem solving skills and ensuring a more balanced approach to parenting in your household. The best aspect of the work is the three pronged approach. The Plan A, B or C allows parents to coordinate their efforts to improve behavioral issues with less disagreement on approach.

The book reads well and the examples, while tending to the extremes, are easily relatable to any child. This book is a must for the parent of the special needs child (ASD, ADHD, PDD-NOS) or of a child experiencing any stress (divorce, death of a family member, transition).Enabling children to open up, confront their own feelings and properly identify obstacles and skill gaps is an invaluable tool whcih will serve them well throughout their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful book
I own this book, and almost from page one I saw my child.I was so happy to read the descriptions, and examples of another rigid, explosive child.Instantly I felt relief, there are other children like mine.First the book gave me validation.I now knew for sure that my child's reactions and my feelings were shared by other families.

The advice given, while no magic bullet, were a welcome relief. The steps were concrete and doable. The choices were mine to make as to which behaviors to ignore and which to work on. There was no condemnation on what is the 'right' way to handle a particular situation. It it works for me, it is great! What Your Explosive Child Is Trying to Tell You: Discovering the Pathway from Symptoms to Solutions ... Read more
