From the supplier: The child care choice of parents has been a prime item of policy discussion at all levels of government in recent years. Researchers have responded by examining aspects of cost and quality of care and their implications for the family. One area in which the research effort is in its early stage is after-school child care. This paper presents an attempt to implement a test of a model of child care choice, adapted to after-school care. The results of the implementation are reported and recommendations made for the development of a larger-scale data base. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource
I haven't had a lot of time to pour over this yet, but it seems like it will be a great resource. It came highly recommended to me. I like that you can pick and choose the elements that are the most crucial to your program to start with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bring Your Self To Work
I will definetly incorporate it for my after-school staff trainings

5-0 out of 5 stars What An Eye Opener
When I first heard about the Bringing Yourself to Work project I thought - "This is amazing!Emotional intelligence is such an important component of success for school-age staff and school-age programs. This is just what the field needs!".

Then I discovered that Michelle and Pat had written a book on the subject.I quickly ordered one and once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. The stories about the interactions that staff has with children are so genuine and the steps to reaching a better understanding of yourself and your workgroup are so easy to comprehend that it makes you want to call a staff meeting to get started right away!

The impact of an emotionally intelligent self and staff cannot be overstated and The Model for Change provides step-by-step instructions and encouragement that help the reader connect to the material in a meaningful way.It is motivational and inspirational to realize that the "soft skills" that are not so readily recognized as indicators of academic success but are indicators of life success can be developed and enhanced in everyone.

I heartily recommend this book particularly for folks in the fields of education, child care, school-age care, or youth development. However, the truth is that any reader can benefit from the principles and exercises included in this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Increasing numbers of children are participating in after-school programs, and with more federal and state funding the number of such programs is likely to grow. This growth has been occurring, however, with little guidance as to what program features or practices might be most helpful in nurturing the educational achievement, emotional development, and health of the children involved. This book helps fill that need for guidance by offering a set of 18 model practices against which after-school programs can be evaluated. The authors provide ways to score adherence to the criteria, from "excellent" to "inadequate"; survey forms for collecting the information to assign these grades; and an illustrative application of their approach to a set of real-world after-school programs. ...
