5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for parents and teachers
So many misconceptions surround the condition known as ADHD, and the sheer volume of information is daunting to a parent who suddenly finds themselvesfaced with a diagnosis.As a Special Education major, I have found thisbook incredibly easy to read and understand.It explains the condition ineveryday terms, and gives analogies that effectively illustrate exactlywhat goes on inside the mind and body of a child with ADD or ADHD.Anyonewho may have to deal with one of these children--parents, grandparents,teachers, aunts, caregivers--should read this book. Besides explanations,it has wonderful strategies for managing an ADHD child's behavior. It alsohas great suggestions for ways to make home life and classroom life easieron both the parent (or teacher) and child. Of all the books I've comeacross, I rely on this one the most for explaining ADHD to my family andfriends who need to understand. ... Read more

Product Description
“Child development” describes the process of children accruing the ability to do increasingly difficult or complex activities as they grow older. Child development is separated into five categories: cognitive, language, motor, sensory, social and emotional.

¡ Cognitive development is the process by which children think, learn, understand, problem-solve, reason, and remember.

¡ Language development is the process by which children learn to speak sounds, words, and sentences to communicate with others, and to use or understand body language, gestures, and what others say.

¡ Motor development is the process by which children learn to use their muscles to move. It is separated into two categories: ƒ Large, or gross, motor development—when children learn to use their large group muscles to sit, stand, walk, run, keep balance, and change positions; and ƒ Small, or fine, motor development—when children learn to use small muscles in their hands to eat, draw, dress, play, and write.

¡ Sensory development is the process by which children hear, see, taste, touch, smell, and feel.

¡ Social and emotional development is the process by which children learn to relate to others, such as having relationships with family, friends, and teachers; and how they learn to cooperate and respond to the feelings of others and develop control over their emotions.

Parents and other adults, such as grandparents and child care providers, play important roles in a child’s development. The environment is also an important factor in development because it stimulates learning. Providing stable relationships that are socially and emotionally nurturing, and environments that are safe and age appropriate are essential to healthy human development.

Parents and providers may have questions about how to support children’s development and how to establish developmentally appropriate environments. This resource guide is designed to help parents and providers find information, which is divided into the following sections:

¡ Developmental Milestones;
¡ Early Learning;
¡ Environment, Health, and Safety;
¡ Social and Emotional Development; and
¡ Learning Activities and Teaching Materials ... Read more

Product Description
Many children in England have been in non-parental care of some sort before starting school. Although some believe that young children are better off at home, experts argue that it does not matter where a child is, as long as they receive good quality stimulating care. This work is aimed at both providers of childcare services and those planning to use, or already using some form of childcare. Divided into three parts, topics covered include the different types of childcare service, the different needs of parents, children and childcare providers, choosing the best type of care for your child, and how the law tries to ensure that parents and children obtain good childcare. The second section describes 13 significant features of childcare that can help you to decide if a nursery or childminder is offering a good quality service. The third section discusses the practical problems of finding childcare, where to find good childminders and nurseries, how to choose a place that suits you and your child, and how to make the arrangment work. ... Product Description
Since 1989, American families have adopted more than 230,000 children from other countries. Many of these children have lived in crowded conditions, sometimes with poor standards of hygiene, inadequate nutrition, and limited numbers of caregivers. Some suffer from endemic infectious diseases. Upon arrival, practitioners often fail to recognize the unique concerns of this group.
This text provides an overview of the specialized medical and developmental issues that affect internationally adopted children, offering guidelines to the physicians caring for these children and their families before, during, and after adoption. The reader will learn how to advise families prior to an international adoption, how to perform an effective initial screening assessment of the newly arrived child, and how to recognize and manage developmental and other more long-term problems as they emerge. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars invaluable resource for adoptive parents as well as pediatricians
This book is NOT just for pediatricians.In fact, it is incredibly useful for adoptive parents at many stages in the adoption process, including:
(a) those wanting reliable information about the general medical/health risks of different programs/countries;
(b) those wanting to know how much and what kind of medical information to expect at referral; and
(c) those who want background information about certain medical conditions that are more common for international adoptees than the general U.S. population.

The book's contents include a review of available literature on the more common medical issues by country/region.It also addresses prenatal exposure risks (e.g., to alcohol, drugs, smoking, and stress), immunization issues, travel and transition to the adoptive family, growth and development, infectious diseases, neurcognitive/behavioral problems, and other topics.Not surprisingly, the book has somewhat of a clinical feel but for all that is highly readable for the layperson. ...
