Product Description
Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Christian DeLaphante Nessy grew up hating poetry especially in his GCSE period during high (secondary) school.
But one day as he read the Ecclesiastes of King Solomon and was astounded by the way it described a woman with powerful and passionate poetic words.
He was then moved and now sets about writing pieces of passionate and intimate expressions that flood his mind.

This poetry book focuses on love, romance and erotic poetry.
Due to the fact that most intimate activities between two lovers, are concealed and never really talked about, he aims to open these doors of concealment and privacy and provide the reader a visual and imaginative fantasy of what happens behind closed doors.

So treat this as a diary and open up his thoughts to see the passion that's inside of him...... ... Read more

Product Description
Argumentation theory is a distinctly multidisciplinary field of inquiry. It draws its data, assumptions, and methods from disciplines as disparate as formal logic and discourse analysis, linguistics and forensic science, philosophy and psychology, political science and education, sociology and law, and rhetoric and artificial intelligence. This presents the growing group of interested scholars and students with a problem of access, since it is even for those active in the field not common to have acquired a familiarity with relevant aspects of each discipline that enters into this multidisciplinary matrix. This book offers its readers a unique comprehensive survey of the various theoretical contributions which have been made to the study of argumentation. It discusses the historical works that provide the background to the field and all major approaches and trends in contemporary research.

Argument has been the subject of systematic inquiry for twenty-five hundred years. It has been graced with theories, such as formal logic or the legal theory of evidence, that have acquired a more or less settled provenance with regard to specific issues. But there has been nothing to date that qualifies as a unified general theory of argumentation, in all its richness and complexity. This being so, the argumentation theorist must have access to materials and methods that lie beyond his or her "home" subject. It is precisely on this account that this volume is offered to all the constituent research communities and their students. Apart from the historical sections, each chapter provides an economical introduction to the problems and methods that characterize a given part of the contemporary research program. Because the chapters are self-contained, they can be consulted in the order of a reader's interests or research requirements. But there is value in reading the work in its entirety. Jointly authored by the very people whose research has done much to define the current state of argumentation theory and to point the way toward more general and unified future treatments, this book is an impressively authoritative contribution to the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read to get started and get a good overview
This book gives a good introduction to argumentation theory and its twists and turns over the course of its existence. I found it helpful to get started, especially coming from a completely different field. It gives the essence of Toulmin and Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca but I would have liked to see a bit more on Austin and Searle. But then again the references mentioned are very extensive and can be followed up. All in all a good book if a bit pricey for students (whatever happened to the paperback cover?) ... Read more

A deep well of practical and inspirational wisdom for every Christian writer

Imagine you have the chance to spend an hour or so alone with a couple of well-published writers. Imagine they share with you secrets of their art, and reveal how their art relates to their faith. This is the experience awaiting you with the twenty-two authors of this book.

In A Syllable of Water, some of today's leading writers of faith reflect on all aspects of the writing vocation and process in ways that will inform and inspire.

Philip Yancey, Richard Foster, Luci Shaw, and others discuss everything from the tools of a writer to the ways that they spend their time when they are not writing.

Editors such as John Wilson (Books & Culture) and American Book Award-winning Cherokee poet, Diane Glancy, reflect on the value of the editor-writer conversation, as well as the power of revision.

And other writers of stature including Doris Betts, John Leax, Erin McGraw, Harold Fickett, Virginia Stem Owens, Jeanne Murray Walker, Scott Cairns, and Eugene H. Peterson offer sage advice on how to approach nearly every imaginable genre from fiction and nonfiction to memoir, poetry, and translation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wellspring of Wisdom
The "syllable of water" that is the title of this remarkable collection of essays about writing sparkles on the surface of a bottomless wellspring of wisdom. Each of the 20 contributors (all members of the faith-based Chrysostom Society)presents an enticing invitation to sip from the cup of of his or her particular genre of word-making.The book is rich in resources, especially the "further reading" references at the end of each essay that sparkle like an after-dinner drink. One writer, James Calvin Schaap, says, "If writers...pursue what needs to be accomplished, all the while desiring to be brought to their knees in awe, they will find their way to good writing. There is a sweetness in being blindsided by life, by truth, by a dark corner suddenly illuminated. There is sheer joy in epiphany."A reader's thirst for words good and true can be slaked by thoughts like that.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to Become a Better Writer of Faith
This is a beautiful book perfect for Christian writers! Covering every genre from fiction to drama to journalism to memoir, it really opened my eyes to all the different types of writing there are, yet how they're connected. Many authors contributed to this book, and with their varying styles, you get a new point of view with each chapter. They were not preachy, but were very real and practical about how their faith affects their work. I learned a lot of valuable tips on what it means to write a poem (the art of language), the challenges and pay-offs of research, and how to tackle writer's block. No matter your age or denomination or writing style, you can learn a lot from this fabulous book. I'm sure keeping it close by as a valuable reference!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine guide for the amateur writer of faith
How does faith play into the writing of a Christian? "A Syllable of Water: Twenty Writers of Faith Reflect on Their Art" draws on how religion and faith intertwine with the creative process of crafting prose and the world of fiction. The twenty writers offer advice that is not purely Christian and useful to writers that are secular or belong to other faiths, but they do speak on how their faith has impacted them and their work. A fine guide for the amateur writer of faith, "A Syllable of Water" is a strong choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Collection of Essays on Writing
Wow.One essay after another that is pregnant not only with profound insights into what makes good writing, but also practical suggestions on how to improve one's own writing craft and write well. The essays cover a wide variety of types of creative writing, including not only poetry and short story, but also creative non-fiction (that wonderful genre that is oddly defined by what it is not) and even journaling. There are two things that really set this book apart (or three depending on how you count): the variety of writers who contribute, and the variety of their topics (I think every creative writer of any genre will find all of the essays helpful), and also the fact that the contributors are not only all gifted writers but also writers who have thought carefully about how to express what it is that they do well.I have purchased mulitiple copies of this book to give away to other friends who write. ... Product Description
This text discusses the importance for theology of narrative and story. The central contention of the book is that, if Jesus' parables are taken as models of theological reflection, there is a form there that unites language, belief and life. A theology taking its cues from parables finds that the genres most closely associated with it are the poem, the novel and the autobiography. These become the prime resources for the theologian who tries to show how insight occurs through language, how one comes to this moment of belief, and how one works it out in one's own life. The author discusses such important works as Alan Paton's "Cry the Beloved Country"; J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings"; "The Violent Bear it Away" by Flannery O'Connor; the science fiction of C.S. Lewis; and the fantasies of Charles Williams. ... Read more

How should we understand the stories of the Babylonian Talmud? Where do they come from? Why are they in the Talmud? How do they relate to Talmudic law? In Talmudic Stories, Jeffrey Rubenstein deepens our appreciation for the complexity of these texts by drawing attention to the literary aspects and cultural contexts that are essential to understanding their narrative art, meanings, and importance. Focusing on six famous stories of the Babylonian Talmud and discussing many others in relation to these, Rubenstein's analysis illuminates the ways in which the rabbis used narratives to grapple with fundamental tensions of their culture. The book also features an appendix including the original Hebrew/Aramaic texts for the reader's reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Conscious Reader Enlightened Me!
I purchased this book for Literature 101 last semester. There are lots of great stories and poems within this book. I found that there was a good blend of different authors and subject material. I was going to resell the book, but for some reason I have much difficulty departing with my old books. I just want to keep them around. They sit there on the bookshelf awaiting for me to take a peek at them once more. And I try to do so. I sometimes sell some books, but only the ones I don't like. This is one of the books that I cannot sell. It is stuck with me for good. Or maybe I'm stuck with it. Either way, the book is going nowhere, and I can attest to the quality of this book with utmost sincerity. As a matter of fact, I'm going to pull it off the shelf right now and get reacquainted. ... Product Description
Talking to paper is talking to the divine. Paper is infinitely patient. Each time you scratch on it, you trace part Of yourself, and thus part of the world, and thus part of the grammar of the universe. It is a huge language, but each of us tracks his or her particular understanding of it."

From A Walk Between Heaven and Earth

Unlike any other guide to journal writing, A Walk Between Heaven and Earth is itself written as a personal journal and as a meditation on the flow of creation. Burghild Nina Holzer demonstrates that the creative process is in fact a large, ongoing movement in our lives and that we may gradually discover the pattern and direction of it by trusting whatever it is we choose to confide to the page. She helps would-be writers recognize the power and importance of opening themselves to the present moment and recording whatever they find there. Holzer's book is both inspiration and model. It will appeal not only to those who wish to explore the creative process as a mystical path, but to all who desire to express themselves through writing.

"Like Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, this journal is both a useful guide and wonderful to read in its own right. It took only a few pages for me to feel as if I was walking in well-loved familiar places, hearing the voice of an old friend."

Joseph Bruchac, author of Dawn Land

Burghild Nina Holzer teaches us to write by teaching us living process. She is marvelous at following herself for the benefit of teaching others how to do so. I loved her book."

1-0 out of 5 stars I just don't get it.
I love journalling books and have a wide collection of them. This is the first one I have started but been unable to finish. I felt really disappointed after reading the glowing reviews for this book on the website - but I'm afraid I just don't get it. The "entries", which I feel were very contrived, taught me nothing and sometimes seemed so forced and self conscious that I found myself scoffing at them. Ms Holzer herself says that she kept another journal whilst writing this one - I think it was that fact that made me realise what a contrived thing the "journalling journal" was. We would have been better served if she had published extracts from her "real" journal, as there are definate signs of her being a fine writer. The only true to life parts of the book were when she was talking about the tragic death of her brother - and even then, you felt that the real story of her loss was being recorded somewhere else.
I'm sorry if it's just me who doesn't understand what the author is trying to do here, but I got the impression that she wasn't very clear herself of what she expected the outcome to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read and you will sigh...
Who would've thought to write a book about the journaling process in a journal format? Duh! Full of epiphany after epiphany and lovely contemplation.

A Walk Between Heaven and Earth is a great book not only for creative writers, but for everyone who wants to lead a more satisfying life. Holzer's journal entries transmit a deep understanding of what it means tobe a writer and what it means to be fully alive. Andmy own writing process has become ten times more exciting than it ever wasin years of college classes and work as a magazine editor. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Inside Glimpse into Christian Novelists
I'm always interested in learning more about the motivations from various authors. This book provides another window into 40 different Christian novelists. If you read Christian fiction, then the authors in this book are among the top in their field and consistently on the bestseller list such as Jerry B. Jenkins or Francine Rivers or Karen Kingsbury or Beverly Lewis. With each story, Diane Eble has done an excellent job of detailing interesting aspects of their lives.

Of course since this book was published in 1992, new authors have come on strong into today's fiction market. It's not comprehensive but many of these authors are still actively writing new books. I loved this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some interesting Bios; disturbing ecumenical cross-section
This was a collection of forty short bios about certain Christian fiction writers. While there were those who had to overcome some obstacles in their lives like Bodie Thoene, there were also some writers included who were (and still) under bondage to Popery and would prefer to stay there.

Some of these bios were truly fascinating, like Diane Noble's and Karen Kingsbury's. Kingsbury spent a number of years as a writer with the LA Times and had one of her novels turned into a made-for- TV movie. Some like Peggy Stoks left much to be desired.

What turned me off in certain points was the anecdotal editorializing that Mrs. Eble did. In other words, she was trying to assume the role of a preacher in print with positive suggestions and "you'll feel good about yourself if you do this" mentality. Her job was to compile and edit what she collected, not to tell her readers what to do.

Yes, I do aspire to be a published novelist. Lord willing, that may happen. However, I'm more inclined to take what she said here with a grain of salt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh, but Filtered, Air
This is a great idea.I couldn't pass it up when I caught the ad in a book club mailer.Any aspiring Christian writers will find encouragement "Behind the Stories" of these authors.

The good: I appreciated the variety and sheer number of Christian authors represented in this volume. Each had a tale of struggle and triumph on the road to publication.I found worthy lessons in each chapter.Randy Alcorn's financial sacrifices, Dee Henderson's steady planning, Bodie Thoene's physical limitations...all of these, and more, were uplifiting and challenging to any would-be authors such as myself.

The bad: The editor decided to underline the evident lessons with spiritual platitudes and trite endings. The stories--as should be, from any fiction writers--spoke for themselves.Unfortunately, the mini-sermons wore on my patience. In addition, I got the feeling at a number of points that the authors' true struggles had been tidied up a bit for the Christian audience.

Thankfully, the authors who do attempt full disclosure manage to breathe fresh air into this book, even if we can't fully appreciate it.Still, any fresh air is worth it in the lonely world of a writer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Appeals to a certain audience
Diane Eble interviews 40 of the top writers of Christian fiction (a burgeoning market that was virtually non-existent 20 years ago) in Behind the Stories. A notable inclusion is Jerry B. Jenkins, ghostwriter with Timothy LaHaye of the popular "Left Behind" and "Left Behind Kids" series'.

Each author's story is told in its own chapter, and the chapters are grouped into sections according to how the authors perceived and/or answered "God's call" for them to write Christian novels and stories, although they could all be lumped into a single category: "God calls, the author resists the call, God encourages them to persevere, author becomes and continues to be successful." A common thread of humility runs through all the stories-none of the authors included seems to have known they were talented at writing fiction until God showed them through their successes that it's what they were meant to do (and sometimes not even then.) The book seems aimed at a Christian audience, and at the end of each author's personal story is a mini-sermon interjected by the author to encourage readers to answer God's call for their own lives, whatever it may be-writing, cooking, keeping house, or simply maximizing the opportunity to witness for God in their current line of work and daily life.

Behind the Stories will appeal to fans of Christian fiction, and generally anyone who embraces the philosophy of living according to a higher spiritual plan and purpose for their life. Biblical and doctrinal references keep the book from being accessible to a more general audience, who may be put off by the heavy-handed spiritual message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!
What an inspiration it was to read about the faith journeys and writing journeys of some of my favorite Christian authors. I thought I would just skim through and read about the authors I'm familiar with, but each story was so interesting and unique that I read the book cover to cover--and found some new authors I'd like to try out. This book was a great idea!I'm always curious about the authors of the books I read. I can't believe someone didn't think of writing a book like this before. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for finding a purpose and direction for your writing.
An excellent book for Christian writers or those who are exploring the possibility of writing.

An encouraging work that discusses a writer's vision and goals, the need to rightly divide the word of truth, and to share God's message to a hurting world with compassion and faithfulness. Marlene stresses the importance of first taking off our own mask so that we might be real and relevant to others as we strive to give them a clear picture of Jesus Christ.

Marlene is quick to share her own frustrations and disappointments as an author as rejection slip after rejection slip came her way, but through the encouragement of her pastor and others she did not give up.

Here are a few gems from her book:

"I don't know of a single successful author in the inspirational field who hasn't experienced doubts and discouragement. The unsuccessful are the ones who quit." P. 12 Lee Roddy

"We are literature missionaries!" p. 19

"The biggest reason I procrastinate is because I am afraid of failure." p. 48

The extensive Appendixes are reason enough to buy and read this book.

Appendix 2 - Laying A Biblical Foundation for Your Writing Ministry
Appendix 3 - Writing Your Testimony
Appendix 4 - From Idea to Published Manuscript
Appendix 5 - A Writer's Statement of Faith

5-0 out of 5 stars Great devotional for writers
This book is great to use as a daily or weekly devotional. The entries are thought provoking and help you clarify your purpose with writing. There are questions at the end of each devotional/teaching that are useful to spark journal writing or to help you get in the habit of writing daily. I will keep this book and re-read it for my devotional time over again, because I think its possible to get different things from it each round. I am very pleased with this book. It is exactly what I was looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Bible Study to Keep Writer's Grounded
As a new author myself I found "Write His Answer: A Bible Study for Christian Writers" to be well written and grounded solidly in the Word. I use it daily in my quiet times, to keep me focused on my main objective in writing - that is to glorify the Lord.

Marlene Bagnall has adeptly woven many aspects of writing and our call as Christians to write "His Answer", through Scripture and what writing should mean to the Christian author.

A wonderful book that has made my writing experience an enjoyable and spiritual one.
