5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Christmas is Wonderful
This is one of the best Christmas books I have ever found. There is a second one called Traditional Christmas Two that is also very good. They have everything from decoration crafts and ideas to gifts that you can make to recipies for those holiday meals and intertaining.I had both books and lost them in a move and did not rest until I managed to replace them. They are great!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent variety, something for everyone
I love this book.It has something for everybody. Even people who don't think of themselves as crafty will enjoy this book. And there are so many fun things in it that I have found something that I didn't notice beforeeverytime I look through the book. And it has different skill levels too. There are projects you can do with the kids, or if you are ambitious, thereare detailed christmas villages you can make.Even the recipes for holidaycooking are fun and easy.If you want a good all inclusive book for theholidays this is the one.Another book I would recommend for the holidaysis "Old-Fashioned Christmas Favorites".It has great traditionsand recipes that are old time favorites that may have been forgotten.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Book
Beautiful photographs.Instructions are easy to follow and supplemented with photographs.I was disappointed that the recipes emphasize use of the microwave oven.(We have opted not to have a microwave oven). They don'tgive parallel instructions for conventional ovens.Otherwise a great book. Everything from traditional to creative new crafts.I'm glad I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Christmas projects that are low cost and fun to do!
This book contains great ideas for christmas decorating, gifts, and cooking. Most of the projects are very easy to do and use things that you already have around the house, or from recycled material. This is a great book ... Read more

Product Description

"Nigella covers just about all the quick bases in Express . . . this is a recipe collection that could get you through the holidays."
--The Washington Post

"The recipes are a mix of dishes that are quick to prepare and cook--so you can have your dinner out of the grocery bag and on to the table in half an hour or so--and dishes that are easy to prepare early in the day and then are simply left to simmer slowly."
--Good Housekeeping

"Nigella Lawson has conjured up a voluptuous volume of what she called `fast food for those who love eating.' . . . it's a Nigella-style feast . . . A perfect choice for cooks who would rather sip wine than labor over a hot stove, Nigella Express is, as the British say, brilliant."
--People

"A fast feast may seem like a concept at odds with itself, but the goddess of easy extravagance, Nigella Lawson, has figured out how to put together a lavish party menu in ultrashort order . . . That's what her latest cookbook, Nigella Express, is all about--time savers that don't compromise on flavor but are so effective you'll feel you got away with something."
--O at Home

Christmas is a time for family and friends, for tradition and treats. But, let's face it, when the pressure to feed and entertain builds up, the festive season can start to lose its sparkle . . .

That's where Nigella comes in. With her no-nonsense approach, her inspirational ideas, and her empathy for the practical realities of the season--combined here with reliable, easy-to-follow recipes and reassuring advice about planning and cooking ahead--Nigella Christmas is guaranteed to bring comfort and joy and make sure the season of good will stays that way.

Here is everything you could wish for to make your life and your Christmas easy and enjoyable: from party canapés, cocktails, and manageable mass catering, to scrumptious Christmas cakes and puddings; from no-fuss brunches to quick-and-easy homemade presents (chutneys, preserves, and other delectable standbys) and edible tree decorations. There are mouth-watering recipes with a seasonal twist, and simple menus for feeding friends and family over the extended holiday season with minimum stress and maximum enjoyment.

And, of course, exciting and inspiring variations for the Main Event itself--from her traditional super-juicy turkey with all the trimmings, to festive ginger-glazed ham and the Ultimate Christmas Pudding; from goose, rib of beef, and stuffed rolled pork, all the way to a special vegetarian Christmas feast, a chocolate pudding, a French Yule Log, an Australian Christmas Pudding, and The Boozy British Trifle.

Nigella's cakes, as always, gladden the heart--and, like many of the recipes here, are at home all year round--but her At-a-Glance Christmas Lunch Countdown, together with make-ahead and freeze-ahead tips throughout, can help take the stress and strain out of the season. With its glorious illustrations, Nigella Christmas will surely be a perennial favorite--the book we will all reach for, for inspiration and reassurance, when Christmas comes around each year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very Nigella Christmas
I love watching Nigella's Christmas Specials and was thrilled when this book arrived. It is filled with great personal stories as well as beautiful photography. The recipes are easy to follow and the book has great tips for making a memorable holiday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Entertaining Resource Book
"Nigella Christmas" is not just a holiday entertaining book - it's a RESOURCE book. It's a book about many things.About how to be a host, how to break down a party, how to plan your menu, how to set up your service, how to lay your table, even how to create hostess gifts. It's a full-service "how to" guide.Without a doubt - this is one of Nigella's best efforts.Completely comprehensive, thoughtful and nostalgic.I savored every page.

As another reviewer has mentioned - it's not even just for the holidays. You can use this book for any occasion or any gathering. From something as simple as a family dinner to family reunion. You are covered.A few recipe highlights:
- Rolled Stuffed Loin of Pork with Ruby Gravy
- Bourbon-Glazed Ribs
- Aromatic Christmas Ham
- Panettone and Italian Sausage Stuffing

Yummy --- now, I'm hungry for the holidays! I really enjoyed all the extra craft / gift ideas - not to mention all the table setting imagery.Full of so many ideas - I can't wait to take them for a spin myself.

A great resource for your library -- I highly recommend.

Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nigella is wonderful! And so is this book. . . .
First let me say that I was fortunate to be able to meet the wonderful Ms. Lawson on December 9, 2009 when she visited Houston:

[...]

I already had all of her other books and immediately loved her casual style and easy take on cooking. Nigella Express I think is my favorite, particularly the Pollo alla Cacciatore, but I love all of the books. I made the Christmas Chocolate Cookies on page 206 twice, once on Christmas Eve, shortly before the yeast-free diet on January 4th. They really are easy to make and delicious to eat. I didn't have those holiday sprinkles, but ended up getting two containers of colored sugar sprinkles and mixing them--hey, it worked!

I also want a cup that says "Keep Calm And Carry On." I've got the sign posted on my desk at work.

Ms. Lawson's lecture stated that while she enjoys meeting fans and talking about food, it's simply out of a love of cooking and frequently, wanting to eat now. She doesn't like stressed out holidays, either--but who does? Read the book ahead of time, do a little planning, and you too can have a fantastic holiday that you can enjoy as well as your guests.

Now, is there any of that Choco-Chili left???

5-0 out of 5 stars A cook book for life - not just for Christmas.
Like all my Nigella books, I have read this word-for-word, cover-to-cover. (I find them so readable and enticing - rare among my cookery books. The only other cookery writer I've come across who inspires similar devouring is Nigel Slater).
There are some beautiful Christmas-centric pages but I find that much of this book is useful all year. I keep returning to certain favourites on a regular basis. Trouble is, the calorific options are excusable in the midst of festive excess but a recipe for unwanted curvature when eaten all year. My waistline rues the day I discovered the Girdlebuster Pie. (Unlike my family and friends, who love it!)
If you love food, Christmas and serving up sumptuous delights, I'd certainly recommend this book.
Another Nigella triumph.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gift Giving
I gave this as a gift to a friend whom I know is a fan of Nigella's, as am I. What surprised me about this title was how tacky the cover is (I ordered it on Amazon, then saw it in a store). Nigella is a wonderful writer and a good chef, and the other cookbooks of hers that I own (How to Eat, Domestic Goddess, Feast) are either designed in an understated fashion or very tasteful. I was a little embarrassed to have sent this. ... Read more

Product Description
Every year at Christmastime, Marnie and her twelve closest girlfriends gather in the evening with batches of beautifully wrapped homemade cookies. Everyone has to bring a dessert and a bottle of wine, but this year, it’s their stories that are especially important. Marnie’s oldest daughter has a risky pregnancy. Jeannie’s father is having an affair with her best friend. Taylor’s life is in financial freefall. Rosie’s husband doesn’t want children, and she has to decide, very soon, the fate of her marriage.

On this evening, at least, they can feel as a group the impulses of sisterly love and conflict, the passion and hopefulness of a new romance, the betrayal and disillusionment some relationships bring, the joys and fears of motherhood, the agony of losing a child, and above all, the love they have for one another. As Marnie says, the Christmas Cookie Club, if it’s anything, is a reminder of delight. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Engaging story....
This is a light-hearted story about several women who meet each year to exchange Christmas cookies and companionship. It was an enjoyable, engaging read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for romantics and bakers alike
This was such a fun book. Not only did it include a great story about women and relationships/friendships but it also included recipes for amazing cookies and facts about ingredients like ginger, sugar, vanilla and other things we put into our cookies.I love this book and can't wait to tell my friends about it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh
I tried to like this book, but I just couldn't. The writing was flat and unoriginal, and the characters were uninspired. For female camaraderie, plus good writing, I would recommend The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Three stars with extra sprinkles for recipes
Every year I read at least one new Christmas themed book. This year it was Ann Pearlman's The Christmas Cookie Club. Every year a group of women gather to exchange Christmas cookies and to relax and renew friendships.Marnie is the one who has put it all together from the beginning, the "head cookie bitch" as she describes herself. The day of the cookie party arrives and she is more worried about what the tests her pregnant daughter is undergoing in California will reveal, then about the party. And others coming to the gathering have their own worries, Rosie has decided she wants children, though her husband does not, Taylor has suffered financial devastation and does not want the others to know, Jeannie is devastated by a family betrayal and the fact one of the women in the group hid her own knowledge of the affair. The mother of Marnie's other daughterTara's "baby daddy is attending for the first time (the cookie virgin) and there is no way of knowing if it will all go well.
Each chapter is preceded by a short lesson on a vital cookie ingredient and a cookie recipe.Pecan Butter Balls are my favorite. The Christmas Cookie Club has a tremendous job trying to not only introduce more than a dozen main characters, but trying to intertwine their stories.Just as the cookies need varied ingredients to be a success, the point is made that friendships need the variety that many friends contribute and that a pinch of kindness, tolerance and forgiveness to be their best. I enjoyed this book and have enjoyed several of the recipes, but the book is not one I will reread again and again like Lee Smith's The Christmas Letters. Instead,Ipassed it on to another friend to enjoy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Marnie was the main ingredient.
Marnie founded a "Cookie Club" that celebrates friendship, the holiday season and fantastic cookies. Annually twelve members meet to exchange cookies, bond and share part of their lives with each other. Woven with just the amount of recipes, interesting facts (about certain ingredients...cinnamon, sugar, vanilla, etc) and personal stories, the "Christmas Cookie Club" was a decent read.

Marnie, the main storyteller in the story is hosting the meeting while awaiting news from her pregnant daughter (who recently lost a child to a genetic disorder) concerning the results of her latest genetic test; reeling from the news that her 18-year-old daughter is pregnant by a rap artist named "Special" (aka Aaron); and debating if she should open her heart to another (younger) man (after losing one husband at a young age and marrying a philander). She tells each member's story, as they present their cookie, (which seems to be a symbol of what they experienced in the past year). Drug use, spousal abuse, cheating spouses, tragedy, financial troubles, betrayal, dating younger men, infertility, and other issues (that everyday people have), all prove to connect these women and create a story that was both realistic and heartwarming. With the essential ingredient, Marnie, the group proves to be what each of its twelve members needs in a time of crisis.

I also appreciated the incorporation of the relationship between Marnie and Sissy (Aaron's mother) and how they found common ground, [not only because their children were having a child], but because they both survived the tragic loss of a spouse, becoming widows at an early age raising young children. While I thought some of the Aaron storyline was stereotypical and at times fraught with the typical clichés (rebellious teen dates black juvenile delinquent), Pearlman eventually did show that their relationship was solidified by their mutual loss more so than their racial differences. Sissy

And finally, while I didn't think the premise of the book was terribly original (female solidarity and friendship), I did think the layout of the book merits mentioning. I thought that it was clever and creative. Each chapter began with a main ingredient, is followed by a recipe and then the story of the member who produced the cookie. And while at times you may become a little confused (about the characters because some of the plots were similar), I do think Pearlman accomplished what she intended...for each chapter to be a part of a recipe, with the final product being a decent read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
So I get this book thinking I would recieve a new book because I clicked "buy New". Well, not only is it not new, but it has an altogether different front cover than the one pictured, it has a scratch on the front cover and a bend and puncture hole in the back. It smells like an old library book too and is a bit yellowed. I spent 15.64 including S/H and don't think it's worth even half that price. Very disgusted. I contacted the seller and they replied "simply return it and we will give a full refund". Well, I SIMPLY don't feel like wasting more money mailing it back to them and taking the chance of the book getting "lost in the mail" and not recieving squat back. Will not do business with this vendor again.
