This has become one of my favorite holiday books with many ideas we have actually used. Like making the Orange and cloves pomanders, elegant truffles, various garlands made of gum drops, braided ribbon, bells on ribbon, or small pine cones on ribbon.Something for just about anyone, who like us, celebrates a country or mountain Christmas. Great recipes and information on heirloom collectibles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure sweetness!
This lovely author is able to evoke the feelings that one longs to feel at Christmas. It's more than nostalgia. She draws the reader in with beautiful or whimsical poetry which, although old, is somehow not dated. We are treated to sweet photographs and prints chosen so well for the thoughts and feelings they stir in us.She opens up her home and those of her cherished relatives and friends, and gives the reader the experience of meeting and enjoying the quirks and wisdom of each of them. What a treasure to have stumbled upon! How many cookbooks are this rich?

5-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a cozy nook.
My mother gave me this book for Christmas 8 years ago. I literally haven't put it down since! It not only contains recipes that were (and still are) cherished from a generation who knew what life was really all about, but the incidental tidbits of how life was lived long ago is absolutely priceless in this age when things are so inside out and everyone is looking for security and peace. The poems that were dear to the hearts of the depression era pull at the heartstrings, and the wonderful, descriptive details of families and friends that seemed to gather for any reason place the reader in that special time. The recipes are delicious and made with the easy-make-do-with-what-you-have confidence that our grandmothers prided themselves on.From Aunt Mabel's Cranberry Bread to Uncle Bud's Vinegar Pie, they're all recipes that would be welcome on any of today's contemporary tables. Granted, many of us wouldn't dream of making pie crust with lard....but one wouldn't hurt! If anyone has already read The Pioneer Lady's Country Kitchen, than The Pioneer Lady's Country Christmas is a must have for those collecting unusual and homey cookbooks. So stoke up the woodstove, grab a cup of hot chocolate and a cat for your lap, and read this book. You'll be transported to a wonderful memory!

4-0 out of 5 stars Little book chock full of goodies
First of all, I hadn't read the dimensions of this book so if you order it, don't be surprised when this tiny little book (5" square) arrives!!! There are also no elaborate, beautiful glossy photos of the finished products inside. At first I was thinking I wasn't even going to keep it, being it wasn't the typical kind of recipe book I tend to steer towards. Well.....I started glancing through it, and found myself reading the different recipes, saying things like "hmmm", and "oooh", and "yum"!So...I guess before I get rid of it I should try out some of these recipes. From reading what others said about it, they rave about the wonderful recipes, so I guess it's time for me to get busy baking!

Come holiday time, there’s no better way to celebrate than by baking up some special cookies. All of the Hansens’ best cookie creations are here, from simple roll-and-slice cookies to bars and cutouts, including Coconut Dreams, Chocolate Pecan Rounds, and Creamy Christmas Butter Cookies, as well as step-by-step instructions for making truly impressive decorations. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book--eye candy (eye cookies?)
I love this book.I wanted to make beautiful sugar cookies. This book is just wonderful.I got it as a gift for my friends and we just can't stop looking at it.The photos are beautiful-one cookie per page and a description of how that cookie is decorated on the opposite page.I also recommend the companion book that covers cookie decorating for all seasons. There are not a lot of different recipes in this cookie book, but if that is what you are looking for try "Cookie Swap" by Julia Usher. We were absolutely thrilled with how our cookies turned out this year. Our friends and neighbors were so impressed!

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT decorating ideas
I bought this book online thinking it was going to be cute cookie decorating ideas. The recipes are solid and it is still a good cookbook, just be wary that it is NOT like the Whimsical Bakehouse cake book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST cookies!!!
I think this is the best Christmas cookie cookbook - ever! Normally I might like one or two recipes out of a cookbook but with this one, you CAN'T go wrong! I did all my Christmas baking out of this book this year and they were ALL keepers! My husband took a bite of the pecan cream cheese pastry crescents (basically Rugelach) and immediately said, "Homerun!" The lemon crumble bars are the best I have EVER had ... the rainbow cookies will be made in my house every Christmas from here on out. I wasn't looking for a cookbook with ton of fancy decorating tips b/c there is no way I would have time for that. The rainbow cookies took a ton of time but where worth the effort. Most of the other cookies/bars were assembled/baked very quickly. Nothing seemed overly complicated but every one of the cookies was simply AWESOME!
I am buying several of these books and sending them to friends and family. If you are looking for the best cookie recipes you can find, buy this book! You won't be disappointed! I love that there is a huge variety of cookies in just this one book so I didn't have tons of computer print-outs or other cookbooks in my kitchen. Just this one slim book! It's perfect!

2-0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING
Cover cookie - NOT IN BOOK - NOR IS PRACTICALLY ANYTHING LIKE IT.Has some good 'cookie' recipes - however, bought it for state of the art style impressive decorating, as seen in upscale merchandise (like the cover picture) - also saw their 'cake' book - ALSO HAS GORGEOUS COVER - VERY LITTLE INSIDE ABOUT HOW TO ACHIEVE THIS LOOK.I would say it borders on false advertising.

5-0 out of 5 stars Traditions Begin Here
This is a wonderful little cookbook of Christmas recipes from many ethnic groups. Each recipe comes with a little history and background info. The photos almost make you want to eat the page. I haven't tried all the recipes, but the ones I have turned out well. If you want to make some new culinary traditions for Christmas, this is a good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good cookbook
Christmas is such a special time of the year. It's a celebration of Christ's birth, a time to connect with family and friends and of course, there's the yummy food.

Each recipe in The Family Christmas Cookbook is accompanied by a story or poem from Christmas: The Annual of Christmas Literature and Art that began in 1931 and was published for sixty-five years. The legacy begun those many years ago is continued in this global cookbook with recipes from around the world.

Smorekringle from Denmark brings memories of my Danish grandmother's kitchen at Christmas--the warmth, the fragrance of the food, the singing and storytelling. While making this delectable pastry with almond filling, read 'Blowing of the Yule.'

Coffee Braids are a sweetbread made with cardamom and originates from Finland. It's yummy and while devouring it, read the story Preparing for Christmas.

The Almond Torte is a meringue layer cake with chocolate frosting and almonds. It's mouth-watering good and originates in Serbia. The Serbian Blessing is beautiful.

And the Danish Ris Almande (sweet rice and almond pudding) gives me a rush of nostalgia for Christmases past. I want to return to my childhood and A Danish Christmas Eve Dinner. Perhaps this is a part of my heritage I can share with my grandchildren.

Oh, then there is Hogmanay Shortbread from Scotland, Sandbakkels from Scandinavia, Kourabiethes from Greece, Krumkake from Sweden & Scandinavia (one of my childhood favorites), Noche from Italy, Kanya (West Africa) and so much more. While you enjoy these scrumptious dishes, enjoy reading about the traditions and rituals of the countries where the recipes originate.

A delightful cookbook that will smack you in the face with your past--and you'll love every minute of it. Oh, and then there is the food. It's a good thing.

Armchair Interviews says: Another yummy addition to your cookbook collection.

1-0 out of 5 stars Paperback version not same as hardcover
I had this book pre-ordered and it arrived today.Boy was I disappointed. This is not what I was expecting.

Last year I saw the hardcover version of this book at a brick and mortar store but never bought it since it was Christmas time and I had other things to spend my money on than the book.I did, however, take a picture of the cover with my cell phone to remind me to look for it again sometime.

When I saw that Amazon was having the softcover version coming out, I was thrilled and pre-ordered it (without a picture being shown of what it looked like but the title was the same) since the hardcover version does not show up in searches on Amazon. Now that the softcover has arrived with a different cover, I flipped through the entire thing and am extremely unimpressed.I really only need one really good idea to spark me to buy one of these types of books and as I looked through the pages I was miffed to not find a single one.I did another look through thinking perhaps I had missed something.Nope.Then I flipped to the front page of the book to find this softcover version is an "abridged" version of the hardcover (that I didn't notice anywhere in Amazon's description).Apparently whatever enticed me in the hardcover version did not make it to the softcover.

The food stylist for a couple of the dishes featured should be fired. The food looks like it was sitting out for a few hours before the picture was taken.

This book is not for me.It has lots of recipes and tabletop pics, but nothing "special" that I haven't seen before.Nothing that inspired me.Lots of mantel pics that didn't make me want to recreate it in my own home and basically no "flash."Seriously, if I picked this book up off the dollar table at the store I wouldn't have bought it because there is not a single idea in it that sparks my interest and like I said before, I only need one for me to be happy with a purchase. ... The Awesome Story as Seen Through the Novelist's Eye-

It is a dramatic true tale of a young man and his love; the pain of perceived infidelity; a long, difficult journey; a young girl's painful delivery in a distant town, alone without her mother by her side to comfort and guide her; and a couple's eventual settling in a village named Nazareth. All during a time of political and moral upheaval in a tiny country whose importance on the world scene continues to this day.

Bringing to life this human drama, Janette Oke shows how every twist and turn was guided by the hand of the Divine. The result: the powerful proof of God's overwhelming love, and the most catachysmic event in history!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely, Natural Christmas Decorations
I've used this book over and over to decorate my home at Christmas with Southern style arrangements.Demonstrating these techniques for garden clubs and at libraries, I always found a ready audience for this and it was really easy. I learned it all from this book.
The supplies are easy to gather (pinecones, apples, oranges, holly, greenery, wire, ribbon, etc.).The results are spectacular.Your arrangements will look very professional!
Each page shows four or more drawings showing the steps for attaching the pieces to make a different decoration. It shows various wreaths, table decorations, swags, roping, corner accents for doors, mantel decorations and an herb kissing ball.
If you ever visited Williamsburg at Christmas, you will want to recreate these beautiful arrangements in your home. This website gives you an idea of the variety you can create:
