Product Description
There is a growing understanding that to be competitive at an international level, Civil Engineers must build on their traditional strengths in technology and science with greater mastery of the business of Civil Engineering, the "softer" skills of management, teamwork, ethics, leadership, communication. These skills have been defined as essential to the successful practice of Civil Engineering by the ASCE Body of Knowledge Task Force and can be gained through formal education or experience. This book will be the first to take the practical skills defined by the ASCE BOK and provide illuminating techniques, quotes, case examples, problems and information to assist the reader in addressing the many challenges facing Civil Engineers in the real world. From the challenge of sustainability to the rigors of problem recognition and solving, the book provides an essential tool for working as a practicing Civil Engineer. ... Product Description
Petroski reveals the science and engineering--not to mention the politics, egotism, and sheer magic--behind America's great bridges, particularly those constructed during the great bridge-building era starting in the 1870s and continuing through the 1930s. It is the story of the men and women who built the St. Louis, the George Washington, and the Golden Gate bridges, drawing not only on their mastery of numbers but on their gifts for persuasion and self-promotion. It is an account of triumphs and ignominious disasters (including the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which literally twisted itself apart in a high wind). And throughout this grandly engaging book, Petroski lets us see how bridges became the "symbols and souls" of our civilization, as well as testaments to their builders' vision, ingenuity, and perseverance.

"Seamlessly linked...With astonishing scope and generosity of view, Mr. Petroski places the tradition of American bridge-building in perspective."--New York Times Book ReviewAmazon.com Review
Henry Petroski's lyrical history of bridge builders in America isorganized around five engineers: James Eads (inventor of the diving bell, which bridged Mississippi at St. Louis); Theodore Cooper (railroad bridgeengineer and designer of the ill-fated Quebec Bridge); Gustav Lindenthal(Hell Gate Bridge, New York); Othmar Ammann (George Washington andVerrazano-Narrow bridges); and David Steinman (Mackinac bridge). Petroski'sopening and closing chapters, "Imagine" and "Realize," remind us how abridge starts out as a dream of engineering, but ends as a reality ofcompromise and maintenance. Edward Tenner says that "The profoundcontribution of Engineers of Dreams is to remind us that communicationacross generations may be the most important bridge of all." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BridgePros Review
If you want to learn more about the best American bridge designers and their bridges, this is the book for you! In particular it has a very good chapter on Steinman (the designer of the Mackinac Bridge).

This book will tell you the stories and politics behind each one of the designers featured and their bridges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book evokes a sense of wonder
Engineers of Dreams is a book I've read several times because it involves me in the history behind some of engineerings greatest triumphs... and failures. The story of great engineers with various combinations of visionand practicality, as well as perseverence in all cases, makes for a kind ofdrama. In some cases, we know how the story ended, with a great bridge wecan see.In other cases, the story ends with a wreck and bodies. From thestory of the San Francisco Bay Bridge to the story of the first QuebecBridge, this book itself spans a range of ability and satisfaction that isa joy to perceive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to Petroski's usual high standard
I am a great fan of Henry Petroski, engineering professor and author of such minor classics as The Pencil and The Evolution of Useful Things. Perhaps it is because of these high expectations that I was so disappointedby Engineer of Dreams: Great Bridge Builders and the Spanning of America. In the end, Petroski seems much better at writing about engineeringartifacts - pencils, paper clips, or, in this book, bridges - than themakers of those artifacts.Much of Petroski's "biography" hereseemed nothing less than mere formula: you could almost see him filling inhis computer template for "name, date and place of birth, school, mentor, etc." each time a new engineer was introduced.Further, hedid not even attempt to vary the template from person to person, so thatthe repetitive style becomes unmistakable. This book is worth readinginsofar as it provides a history of the bridges themselves, and the limitsof engineering technique and imagination.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Mackinac Bridge is finally recogized
Finally, FINALLY: a recognition of David Steinman's achievements. The Mackinac Bridge has been described as a "symphony of concrete and steel".If Steinman had not been an enginneer, he may have been a musician. Some structures clearly belong where they are placed. Just a few, though. Steinman had the eye for such places: Messina, for example. It was nice to see a chapter devoted to him, and the rest of the book was good, but otherwise documented.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine book explaining the history of building bridges
There are very few books which deal with the detail of what it took to build some of the most useful bridges that , even though they were built almost a hundred years ago, are still used and appreciated by millions of people today.I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the subject and am not surprised, but disappointed that the book is not currently available by the publisher.I was going to purchase several copies as gifts to fellow engineers. I look forward to the second edition ... Read more

Product Description

While engineers and surveyors are not urban planners, they are often engaged in urban development. Therefore, a high degree of competence in civil engineering specialties such as surveying and mapping, highway and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, and, particularly, municipal engineering requires an understanding of urban development problems and urban planning objectives, principles, and practices. With this in mind, City Planning for Civil Engineers, Environmental Engineers, and Surveyors focuses on areas of urban planning with which civil and environmental engineers and surveyors are most likely to come into contact or conflict, in which engineers and surveyors may be required to participate, and for which engineers may be required to provide necessary leadership.

The text stresses basic concepts and principles of practice involved in urban planning as most widely practiced, particularly in small- and medium-sized communities. It introduces engineering students to land use planning as a foundation for infrastructure systems planning and development. It also presents plan implementation devices such as zoning, land subdivision control, official mapping, and capital improvement programming. It describes the factors affecting good land subdivision design and improvement. In addition, the text illustrates the importance of good mapping and control surveys for planning purposes. Written from the perspective that cities are social and economic as well as physical entities, the book offers a historical context for urban planning.

There are a large number of texts on the subject of urban planning, but most generally do not address in any comprehensive way the engineering problems encountered in urban planning. This book delineates these problems and stresses the importance of close cooperation between civil engineers and planning professionals to achieving effective urban planning. Armed with this information, students can become more knowledgeable participants in the urban planning process and more effective members of urban planning teams and governmental and consulting agency staff.

Managing & Leading: 52 Lessons Learned for Engineers
by Stuart Walesh

This is a reasonably good book to read by all engineers who hold (or are venturing into) management responsibilities. I wish I have had this guide book when I was a mechanical engineer-manager throughout the 70's.

The author, a civil engineer by training, draws very clear distinctions between managing, leading & producing output. He even uses the three-legged stool as a metaphor to illustrate these distinctions.

My favourite chapter or lesson from the book is Lesson #52: Can you spare a paradigm? in which the author elaborates on the significance of paradigm pliancy in leadership growth.

Although the author provides a lot of follow-up checklists & reading resources for the reader/engineer to go through & explore further, I believe the book would have been much more valuable if he has taken the trouble to enumerate a few important things from those checklists/resources in each chapter.

Nevertheless, I have enjoyed perusing this book at a library even though I have more or less lost touch with my heydays of engineering. ... Read more

Product Description
Although I knew Terzhaghi well, I did not fully appreciate the personal struggles or the genius of the man until I read Goodman's manuscript - Goodman has caught the essence of the man, says Ralph Peck in the foreword of this first full-length, critical biography on the life of Karl Terzaghi. If civil engineering were a game, Terzaghi had a right to lay down the rules, as he had invented and established much of the groundwork. Karl Terzhaghi (1883-1963) is one of the leading civil engineers of this century and widely known as the father of soil mechanics. His life-long application of the principles established in his work took him throughout the world to engineering challenges in Communist Russia, Nazi Germany, America, and the entire post-war world. Terzaghi's fame as a master engineer is well known, but the story of his development, both personal and professional, has remained unexplored by most people. This material emerged from reading his publications, hundreds of unpublished reports, thousands of private letters, and 82 volumes of previously private personal diaries. This narrative shows Terzaghi's struggle to understand the phenomena observed on many major engineering projects. Through his own words, we explore friendships, conflicts, jealousies, frustrations, and enormous successes. Terzaghi was an artist with constant focus, commitment, and genius. The exploration of his life, much of it amid the backdrop of turbulent Europe between the Wars, becomes an adventure that unfolds to entertain, educate, and stimulate. ... Read more
