Product Description
Civil War literature abounds, matched always by the continuing hunger for new material on the subject. Civil War State-by-State is a comprehensive review that carefully studies the involvement of each state represented on the 34 star pre-war flag. Dedicated entries by historian Paul Brewer feature text and 250 illustrations that bring to life the famous military leaders, politicians, regiments, ships, battle sites, and buildings connected with each state. Using a mixture of historical photographs, artifact imagery, and color artworks from both the Confederate and Union sides, this is a new look at the Civil War, and a must-have for all history buffs. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Learning about the Civil War state by State
The book may be very informative for those born in the U.S. who have had civics classes. I am enjoying it but it's taking me a long time to read it, since as a permanent resident (legal), I only have an overall history of the U.S. and not a state-by-state one. Therefore, there is much history to learn. On the other hand, if one wants a more detailed history of the U.S. piece-by-piece, this is the book to read, but don't expect it to be a fast read. Let's call it more of a reference book to which one can return time and again. Yes, I know its subject is the civil war. But along the way, one learns much about the history of the states and how they originally fit into the larger landscape of the United States.

This book didn't get five stars from me, since I believe the authors assumed anyone who read it had a U.S. background. Therefore, some events are not explained as thoroughly for the reader who lacks a U.S. school system background.

Originally, I bought this book for a Canadian grandson, who is, for some reason unknown, obsessed with all events in connection with the American Civil War.I read it first, to see what sort of information he would be receiving. I realize that with an non-American school background he's going to have the same problem of understanding that I did. However, I still consider it to be a worthwhile book for his (and my) education on the subject.

While we're on the subject of the Civil War, I also wanted him to receive some civil war magazines. But none of those published will ship to Canada. In that way, they are as shortsighted as the authors of this book.

Did it never, ever occur to any of them that some people outside the U.S. would be interested in the civil war? C'mon, U.S., don't be so parochial!

Despite that limitation, I would highly recommend the purchase of this very informative book, even for those who are not budding U.S. Civil War scholars.

5-0 out of 5 stars civil war state by state
Ordered this book for a gift. It is just what I wanted. Nice large, easy to read.Beautiful pictures. Interesting to see your state or states you have traveled, their part in the war by town name.

1-0 out of 5 stars look elsewhere
This book adds no value to large amount of published works available on the war. Each state is covered in 1-2 pages and some of that space is used for information not related to the war (such as what territory the state came from). You will not find any listing or mention of the majority of battles fought in a state. No discussion of the regiments raised by a state unless a regiment was famous such as the Iron Brigade. The books description is so misleading Amazon should either remove it or force its writer to make it reflect the some semblance of what the book contains. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
To my knowledge, this is the only book of its kind, a comprehensive book of the militery firearms imported into this country from europe during the civil war. There are many books on the weapons manufactured both north and south of varying quality, this is the only one on the imported arms.

And it is first reate. A great asset to any library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide to Civil War Sites
This is a good book to find Civil War sites through the US.Alice Cromie shows us where to find major sites as well as some of the little known sites. Wenot only read of the war itself, but the location of events leading up to the war, and locations of museums dedicated to the Civil War.If you use this book
as a tour guide, be sure to call places ahead of time, as some of these no longer exist.Over all it is a good book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion for Touring Civil War Sites
Cromie has written an excellent guide for locating Civil War-related sites in the United States.

The book is organized by state and usually contains the following information:

1.City/town of the event or relation to the Civil War.
2.Location and address of the site.
3.Significance of the site or event.
4.Date of the event.

This book is a gem because it mentions several locations that may not be known to both the Civil War novice and long-time student.

Highly recommended as an invaluable guide for your next Civil War trip, particularly to those less well-known places!

Read and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for all civil war enthusiasts.
This book is an easy to follow guide to many civil war sites. Some of the places are the well known sites and some are not so well known. But, you will enjoy tracking these sites state by state. I've used the booksysytematically and when I've visited a site, I highlight in the book theplace I've been on the state maps provided. Buy it! Try it! Take lots ofpictures, too! Start a scrapbook of civil war sites you've visited. Itmakes for a great conversation piece. ... Read more

* Ten insightful, chapters from the nation's foremost Civil War scholars* Original maps and lavish illustrations

Even though both North and South were consumed with holding Kentucky during four tragic years of civil war, little has been written about the state's dramatic and pivotal role. Here, for the first time, many of the nation's leading Civil War scholars have joined forces to recapture the stunning drama and painful irony that defined the complex political and military efforts to seize and hold Kentucky. Battle for the Bluegrass discusses in sweeping detail the campaigns, battles and personalities of that epic struggle that literally defined the "War in the West" for the first two and one-half years of the war.Contributors include John Y. Simon, Wiley Sword, Charles Roland, James Ramage, and many other outstanding historians.

Ken Masterson Brown is the founder of The Civil War: The Magazine of the Civil War Society, and the author of Cushing of Gettysburg: The Story of a Union Artillery Officer. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine collection of essays
The strongest aspect of this work are the battle essays. Most of the work covers either the early defense of Kentucky by Confederate forces in the winter/spring of '61/62 and the combined invasion of Bragg and Kirby-Smith during fall 1862. The final essay by the editor on the Confederate orphan brigade was moving mostly due to the enormous loses suffered by these Kentucky troops. James Ramage's essay on John Hunt Morgan's raid was disappointing, while Wiley Sword's work on Patrick Cleburne who was not a Kentuckian hardly seemed relevant to the other works. If would have been nice to have seen works on guerrilla warfare, the home-front, slavery in Kentucky, Appalachian Kentucky during the war, or a number of other small raids, but mostly this is a solid work.

3-0 out of 5 stars War At Our Doorstep
Kentucky even though it was south of the Mason Dixon Line it was a border state. They felt the pain where their families were torn apart. Kentucky wanted to remain neutral but Mill Springs on the Cumberland River was the first win on the Union's Western Campaign. Bragg and Buell marched their armies around Kentucky and met in Perryville where there were eight thousand casualties.Bragg leaves the state but John Hunt Morgan, whose mother was a Hunt from Alabama, continued to terrorize our state with his raids. By Ruth Thompson author of "The Bluegrass Dream" and "Natchez Above The River"

5-0 out of 5 stars Brother Against Brother
This is where brother literally did battle against brother.Kentucky is called a border state (although it is a Commonwealth and not technically a state). As such, they fielded armies for both sides and while their Yankeetroops were ruthless and effective, such Rebel outfits as Morgan's Raidersredefined military strategy.

Hard to miss with this wealth ofinteresting history. ... Read more
