Excerpt: Isidora Dolores Ibárruri Gómez (9 December 1895 12 November 1989), known more famously as "La Pasionaria" (passion flower) was a Spanish Republican leader of the Spanish Civil War and communist politician of Basque origin, perhaps best known for her defense of the Second Spanish Republic with the famous slogan ¡No Pasarán! ("They Shall Not Pass"), during the Battle of Madrid. She grew up in Gallarta, the daughter of a local Basque miner and a Castillian mother. Upon her marriage to the revolutionary socialist miner Julián Ruiz Gabiña, Ibarruri moved to Somorrosto (Bizkaia). It was here, during the 1920s, that the once Carlist Catholic young woman became a revolutionary militant activist and one of the first members of the Spanish Communist Party (PCE) when it was founded in 1921. In the 1930s, she became a writer for the PCE publication Mundo Obrero, and was elected to the Cortes as a PCE deputy for Asturias in February 1936 during the Second Republic. After the end of the Spanish Civil War and her exile from Spain, she was appointed General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Spain, a position she held from 1942 to 1960, when she was made honorary president of the PCE, a post she held for the rest of her life. Upon her return to Spain in 1977, she was reelected as a deputy to the Cortes for the same region she had once represented during the Second Republic. She is usually regarded as being one of the greatest public speakers of the twentieth century. The main source of information about La Pasionaria before she became famous is her autobiography "El Unico Camino" (The Only Way). She was born as the daughter of a poor Carlist miner's family in the Basque town...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=273815 ... Read more

Excerpt: Arthur Koestler CBE (5 September 1905, Budapest 1 March 1983, London) was an author of essays, novels and autobiographies. Koestler was born in Budapest but, apart from his early school years, was educated in Austria. His early career was in journalism. In 1931 he joined the Communist Party of Germany but, disillusioned, he resigned from it in 1938 and in 1940 published a devastating anti-totalitarian novel, Darkness at Noon, which propelled him to international fame. Over the next 43 years, Koestler espoused many political causes and wrote novels, biographies, and numerous essays. In 1968 he was awarded the prestigious Sonning Prize "for outstanding contribution to European culture", and in 1972 he was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). In 1976 Koestler was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and three years later with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia in its terminal stages. He committed suicide along with his wife in 1983 in London. Koestler's father, Henrik Koestler, was born on 18 August 1869 in the town of Miskolc in northeastern Hungary. Henrik's father, Leopold Koestler, was a Russian Jew who had settled in northeastern Hungary in 1860, where he married a local woman. Henrik left school at age 16 due to his parents' strained financial circumstances and took a job as an errand boy with a firm of drapers. Determined to improve his prospects, he taught himself English, German and French, and in the course of a few years obtained promotion to the sales department and eventually became a partner in the firm. A few years later, he set up his own business importing textiles into Hungary. Arthur's mother, Adele Koestler (née Zeiteles), wa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=18950939 ... Read more

Excerpt: Mao Zedong ·) (December 26, 1893 September 9, 1976) was a Chinese revolutionary, political theorist and communist leader. He led the People's Republic of China (PRC) from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976. His theoretical contribution to Marxism-Leninism, military strategies, and his brand of Communist policies are now collectively known as Maoism. Mao remains a controversial figure to this day, with a contentious and ever-evolving legacy. He is officially held in high regard in China as a great revolutionary, political strategist, military mastermind, and savior of the nation. Many Chinese also believe that through his policies, he laid the economic, technological and cultural foundations of modern China, transforming the country from an agrarian society into a major world power. Additionally, Mao is viewed by many as a poet, philosopher, and visionary, owing the latter primarily to the cult of personality fostered during his time in power. As a consequence, his portrait continues to be featured prominently on Tiananmen and on all Renminbi bills. Conversely, Mao's social-political programs, such as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, are blamed for costing millions of lives, causing severe famine and damage to the culture, society and economy of China. This is generally accep...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19527 ... Read more

Excerpt: Désiré-Félicien-François-Joseph Mercier (November 21, 1851January 23, 1926) was a Belgian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of Mechelen from 1906 until his death, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1907. Mercier is noted for his staunch resistance to the German occupation of 1914, and is considered to have been the mentor of Leo Cardinal Suenens. Entering the minor seminary at Mechelen in 1861, he then attended Mechelen's Grand Seminary from 1870 to 1874. Mercier received the clerical tonsure in 1871, temporarily served as dean of the seminary, and was finally ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Giacomo Cattani, the nuncio to Belgium, on April 4, 1874. He obtained his licientiate in theology (1877) and doctorate in philosophy from the University of Louvain, and also took courses in psychology in Paris. Mercier was the nephew of Reverend Adrien Croquet. In the 1860s Rev. Croquet (renamed Crockett) became a missionary to the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation in Oregon. In the 1870s, a cousin to Mercier, Joseph Mercier, joined his uncle Rev. Croquet in Oregon and married into a Native American tribe. Today, there are several thousand descendants of Joseph as members of the tribe. Three of Mercier's sisters became nuns, and his brother Léon became a physician...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7335620 ... Read more

Excerpt: Emma Goldman (June 27, 1869 May 14, 1940) was an anarchist known for her political activism, writing and speeches. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. Born in Kovno in the Russian Empire (now Kaunas in Lithuania), Goldman emigrated to the US in 1885 and lived in New York City, where she joined the burgeoning anarchist movement. Attracted to anarchism after the Haymarket affair, Goldman became a writer and a renowned lecturer on anarchist philosophy, women's rights, and social issues, attracting crowds of thousands. She and anarchist writer Alexander Berkman, her lover and lifelong friend, planned to assassinate Henry Clay Frick as an act of propaganda of the deed. Though Frick survived the attempt on his life, Berkman was sentenced to twenty-two years in prison. Goldman was imprisoned several times in the years that followed, for "inciting to riot" and illegally distributing information about birth control. In 1906, Goldman founded the anarchist journal Mother Earth. In 1917, Goldman and Berkman were sentenced to two years in jail for conspiring to "induce persons not to register" for the newly instated draft. After their release from prison, they were arrestedalong with hundreds of othersand deported to Russia. Excerpt: José David Alfaro Siqueiros (December 29, 1896 in Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico - January 6, 1974 in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico) was a social realist painter, known for his large murals in fresco that helped establish the Mexican Mural Renaissance, together with works by Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, and also a Stalinist who participated in an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Leon Trotsky in May 1940. Siqueiros was born the second of three children in Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1896. His father, Cipriano Alfaro, was well-to-do, and was a descendant of Felipe Alfaro of Portugal. His mother, Teresa Siqueiros, came from a Chihuahua family of musicians, actors, and poets. Siqueiros had two siblings: a sister, Luz, three years older, and a brother Chucho, one year younger. David was four years old when his mother died and his father sent the children to live with their paternal grandparents. Siete Filos, Davids grandfather, would have an especially strong role in his upbringing. However, Cipriano, a devout Catholic, disapproved with the way that his parents had been raising the children in the countryside, so in 1907 he brought them back to live with him in Mexico City. There David attended a biblical school. He credits his first rebellious influence to his sister, who had resisted their fathers religious orthodoxy. Around this time, David was also exposed to new political ideas, mainly along the lines of anarcho-syndicalism. One such political theorist was Dr. Atl, who published a manifesto in 1906 calling for Mexican artists to develop a national art and look to a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=172013 ... Read more
