Inspiring classroom teachers

Great book!
Our school handed out copies of this book at then end of last year, then brought Bob in to speak to us before this year starts.The book is great, and Bob himself is wonderful.I was inspired and motivated as were others on our staff.If you're willing to make some changes for the better, definitely give it a try.

Fantastic!

Wonderful Resource for Younger Grades
This is really a wonderful book with excellent ideas to use in the classroom. However, it says it is appropriate for third grade use, but it really isn't. It is made more for younger children. I will be able to use some ideas, but I will have to recreate the activities to make them useful for my students.

Great Resource
This book contains many great ideas.I teach kindergarten, so wasn't able to use as much as first through 3rd grade teachers could.However, I did get some good ideas that I use. Not a bad price, and the ideas are worth the money.

A Must Have!

Very good book for teachers - one thing missing
This is an excellent book for teachers. I saw it about six years ago, the first time in a grade school classroom in Paterson, NJ. It is a book that can help teachers to help children who demonstrate ADHD symtoms be successful in school. So, it is a recommended book.

One thing that I would say is missing in this book is, it does currently subscribe to the medical model, that is, itis a pro-medication book. It really doesn't delve into the controversy of medication at all, but accepts the standard model for treatment. In that respect, I feel, the book falls short.

For the reader interested in another view of this from psychologists and educators, please note the following books. These should supplement Sandra Rief's good work.

A Must for Every New Teacher
This year 25% of my students are ADHD-Inattentive or ADHD- Hyperactive/Impulsive Type. It seems to me that the number of students I have with this disease is increasing every year. Being an early childhood elementary teacher, so many parents are refusing to medicate their children and would rather have them earn C's, D's, and F's than treat them. Then the parents wonder why they struggle with 2nd and 3rd grade in reading and content area. Most of them are in Tier II RTI.

I purchased this book in order to help me in the classroom and document thoroughly their symptoms, behavior, and compliance. This is a great book! It has given me some good ideas to help my students learn to monitor their behavior. The bottom line is students' learning.

Fantastic resource for educators
How to Reach and Teach Children with ADD/ADHD is a truly fantastic resource for educators trying to best serve children with ADHD.Rief begins the book by demystifying ADHD, writing a succinct summary of ADHD and how it manifests in academic domains.She moves on to sharing suggestions on how to best manage ADHD in different tasks like math, reading, and writing. Her suggestions are research-based and easy to implement.I found her writing easy to read, and I really liked how she interspersed bullet points into the text to clearly and quickly move through a lot of material.I shared this resource with some classmates in my special education master's program, and three ended up ordering their own copies.Teachers, if you purchase any book about ADHD, make sure it is this one.

Creative learning activities for fresh or seasoned teachers
The chairs and desks were empty. The whiteboard was empty. Pens, notebooks, computers, and projectors were out of sight. Conversation, sweetened with chuckles, filled the room as students mingled. From the outside, the scene must have seemed chaotic, uncontrolled, and teacher-less, like recess. But this was 9th grade Oral English, and the students WERE learning.

The unit was about body language and non-traditional forms of expression and communication. The socializing was part of an activity. Students were randomly given one card (Joker, K, Q, 8, or 2), which they had to keep secret, and told to act like that card. For instance, one student had a K, so she was trying to get others to bow to her. Another student had a 2, so he was begging everyone for money. Afterward, by deduction, students figured their classmates' cards. The point of the activity was to interpret body language, but it also sparked an intriguing and informative discussion about perception and socioeconomic status.

This activity is one of many found in McKnight's and Scruggs's "The Second City Guide to Improv in the Classroom: Using Improvisation to Teach Skills and Boost Learning" (2008, 185 pages). The book's cover claims it is suited for "Grades K-8," but I easily adapted it for 9th graders and believe it could even be adapted for undergraduate and graduate students. Despite the grade level, this resource can be applied across the curriculum--and should be. Every teacher must own one.

Every teacher can benefit from this book
I used many of the techniques described in this book with my eighth grade students and they loved it!They came into class the following days asking to "play more games".Students are tricked into learning with these fun andexciting teaching methods. Even students that were often disengaged or disruptive became involved in the lessons.McKnight and Scruggs introduce innovative methods for teaching important material.I am very excited to incorporate these ideas into all of my future classes.

One of the best teaching tools ever!
As a new high school teacher, I'm always searching for interesting ways to deliver my material. The last thing I want to be labeled as is "boring" -- a description I admit I've been accused of in my first year, and boy did that sting. But I used some of McKnight's improv techniques during my last day of class, a week after I got this book, and the students absolutely loved them. My teaching partner and I immediately agreed we'd incorporate many more of these techniques next year in our class. I also just signed up for Second City's Creative Pedagogy class this summer.

This Book is a Gem!
Here's some quick financial advice: Find all the classroom management books you have on your shelf, your books on the "first year teaching experience," your "teaching like the experts" tracks and sell them right away. Then, when you've collected what you can, rush out and buy this wonderful primer. Page makes good on her promise (embedded in her subtitle "6 Simple Steps to Preventing Disorder, Disruption and General Mayhem") and provides for the reader, whether new to the field or an old hand like me, simple, direct, and highly effective strategies for teachers to use in their classrooms.

I can't say enough about how good this book is and how much happier I would have been had I read it before my career began many moons ago. Nevertheless, there is much to recommend here to the journeyman as well. Perhaps most notably, Page never condescends to the reader, eschews gimmicks and the hackneyed exhortations about the importance of rewarding and punishing students, and offers, instead, commonsense, but powerful approaches to helping students act in civil, responsible ways.Her prose is clear and direct and the strategies she presents are wonderfully illustrated by interesting and engaging anecdotes which, unlike most education books, are authentic, often dramatic, and clearly drawn from the author's rich career as a teacher and a teacher educator.

Young or old(er), every teacher really ought to have this book on her shelf.Do yourself a favor and buy it today.

Learning 101
I have been a University professor for more than forty years and when this little book attracted my attention(shear curiosity)I did not expect much. SURPRISE!!! Marilyn Page shows, in a concise and coherent way, how to assure that each and every participant learns.

What is unique and especially noteworthy about this marvelous book - besides its obvious usefulness to K-12 schooling - is its application and adaptability to other fields and other teaching levels. Great book- the first review is crazy!
I have worked with children for over 20 years and am now going into teaching!I came across this book while student teaching.It's a great book filled with useful ideas.After you get rid of all your textbooks you will want to keep this book!It packs the experience of years of teaching into a neat litlle book.the comparison to the Chicken soups books is a poor one.I hope the first reviewer has a better attitude with their classroom!

NOTHING NEW - A disappointment
I was hoping to find some real advice and strategies in this book but was greatly disappointed. Notice the size dimensions of the book. It closely resembles those tiny "Chicken Soup" inspiration books you buy because you know they're cute because they are full of quotations but you know they don't really give you that much information.It is full of one sentence to one paragraph common sense tips that can be just as easily obtained by talking to the teachers around you, or from any other teaching book with a little more added value. I am returning this book. I may have kept it if it was $3.99, which is what I think it is worth.

Excellent Tool to Plan Instruction
This book consolidated a lot of theory and best practice techniques ranging from Bloom's Taxonomy to Gardner's Multiple intelligences.I was reminded of the varieties of ways to differentiate instruction and the book had great examples and ideas for doing so.This is a great tool to keep alongside your curriculum guides and other planning materials.

A little cumbersome and overwrought
Had to buy this book for a class.I was unimpressed.The sectioning,layout,and presentation were cumbersome.There was no new information (for me) and the writing and editing were labored, and overwrought.I'd rather have a little more bottom line, a little less minutia.Even the class instructor was not thrilled with her choice.

Very helpful for a new teacher
I love the lists of suggested student products in this book. As a new teacher, I have a hard time thinking of alternative ways to assess my students aside from traditional means. There are several pages that list different activities such as "write a slogan" and "designing a survey" that I would have never thought of and never heard of during my brief training (I was certified via an alternative program). In addition, the author outlines a very straightforward and condensed method for lesson planning that I have found to be very helpful. Explanations are also provided about the importance of differentiation, and there is a nice balance of theory and practicality.
