Product Description

Extreme ultraviolet radiation, also referred to as soft X-rays or XUV, offers very special optical properties. The X-UV refractive index of matter is such that normal reflection cannot take place on polished surfaces whereas beam transmission through one micrometer of almost all materials reduces to zero. Therefore, it has long been a difficult task to imagine and to implement devices designed for complex optics experiments in this wavelength range. Thanks to new sources of coherent radiation - XUV-lasers and High Order Harmonics - the use of XUV radiation, for interferometry, holography, diffractive optics, non-linear radiation-matter interaction, time-resolved study of fast and ultrafast phenomena and many other applications, including medical sciences, is ubiquitous.

Product Description
The book analyses all important aspects that have to be considered when evaluating photovoltaics as a potential option in the power-supply industry and industrial development. Since such an analysis is quite complex and requires know-how from several scientific disciplines, the book draws upon the expertise of about 40 invited experts. Consensus statements on some of the controversial items such as cost development or energy pay-back time are given. In addition, the book is completed by an evaluation of the technological status of photovoltaics. It enables the reader to form his or her own opinion, particularly on the genuine potential of photovoltaics in energy policy, the power-supply industry and industrial development. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitly for decision makers
First I'd like to say that this book isn't for the scientists. When they say it's for decision makers, it is.A lot of the facts written in here are graphs and trends in the economic and financial markets. It looks at many different factors so that a person in charge can make a sound financial investment. As an emerging scientist, I would definitely not recommend this book for someone who is interested in the scientific aspect of this book. There is a small section in the book that goes over the science of solar cells which isn't very comprehensive. If you're working for a big firm that's looking into using solar power, then this would be a good book for supplement for a presentation.

1-0 out of 5 stars PV for DM
This book is a collection of papers. Probably good for research organisations (e.g. CSIR; CSIRO; ...). I only found one section particularly good.

Product Description
" The development of a direct, inexpensive, and efficient method for converting solar energy into a portable, clean fuel would allow elimination of the growing problems associated with the ever increasing use of fossil fuels and the reality of their rapid depletion. As the title suggests, Light, Water, Hydrogen: The Solar Generation of Hydrogen by Water Photoelectrolysis, considers the combination of water and light with a suitable semiconductor to achieve a safe, renewable and therefore inexhaustable means for hydrogen generation via the splitting of the water molecule, or photoelectrolysis. The authors consider the impact of recent advances in nanotechnology on the water photoelectrolysis field, providing specific examples as well as the theories and methods necessary for achieving useful water photoelectrolysis systems. Written for users in a wide range of disciplines, including materials scientists, chemists, electrical engineers, and physicists, Light, Water, Hydrogen: The Solar Generation of Hydrogen by Water Photoelectrolysis is an up-to-date, invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers." ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Useful information but book needs editing
This book presents itself as a comprehensive account of water photoelectrolysis but only partially succeeds.

There is a tremendous amount of substance in Light, Water, Hydrogen. It not only covers water photoelectrolysis, but devotes significant portions to other methods of water splitting (thermolysis, electrolysis, etc.).It thus serves as an excellent introduction to less well known methods of hydrogen production. The scientific presentation seems accurate.

One limitation of Light, Water, Hydrogen is that it seems more like a beefed-up doctoral dissertation than a book. This can be seen readily from the fact that 100 pages of the book are devoted to Grimes' work on nanotube arrays (chapter 5), while just 50 pages are devoted to metal oxides as photoanodes and 40 pages to non-oxides.This choice of emphasis provides a scattered coverage of many important materials that are important both historically and presently. That said, the book is over 500 pages long, and the authors do make an attempt to at least touch on most subjects.

The reason I give the book 3 out of 5 stars is because of the terrible editing. The book seems to have not been edited. There are a huge number of grammatical errors. The tables are very difficult to read -- the text has been shrunk down to such a small print that it borders on illegible.Yet these problems will not stop this book from being a useful reference to those new to the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful book for students, engineers, and scientists
This book can serve as an excellent introduction to the field of hydrogen generation by photoelectrolysis for the newcomer as well as a valuable reference for the experienced researcher. It is extremely well structured and starts with the introduction that explains reader the importance of developing renewable and environmentally clean energy sources. Later, it introduces all the necessary scientific concepts, so that a senior student in the Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics program will have no problem reading it. It covers different type of materials considered for the photovoltaic water splitting with the emphasis on the oxide semiconductors. It references a lot of recent publications providing a great overview of the current status of the field. Thus, I highly recommend this book to virtually anybody interested in the field. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Small-scale gas turbines, known as Microturbines, represent an exciting new development in gas turbine technology. They can run in size from small, human-scale machines down to micro-sized mini-machines that can barely be seen by the naked eye. They also run a great diversity of fuel types, from various types of commercial gases to waste-generated gases. This new book by industry expert Claire Soares will fully describe the various types of microturbines, their applications, and their particular requirements for installation, maintenance and repair. It will explain how a microturbine the size of a refrigerator can power an entire school, hospital or small factory, which is particularly useful for onsite, remote installations. The book will also show how microturbines can be paired with one or more fuel cells to form a hybrid energy source, or can be teamed with any source of distributed power, such as a mall hydro-turbine or a wind turbine. Moreover, the reader will learn how microturbines can run on a variety of fuels that are far cruder than those required by most standard gas turbines; they can be made to run, for instance, using gas from a landfill or biomass source. The reader will find detailed information on costs, specifications, and maintenance and repair guidelines. Ample references and resources will provide the reader with tools for finding manufacturers and product specifications for their own particular needs.

·Covers major categories of microturbines, including factors common to their design, installation, operation, optimization, maintenance, and repair
·Invaluable guidance on market factors and economics affecting microturbines and their applications, particularly for distributed power generation
·Provides current case studies showing microturbines used in hybrid systems with fuel cells and other types of power generation systems ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars microturbines
As a teacher I find Claire Soares book an excellent and information resource. It is also very useful for anyone reviewing power production options in the small to medium range of outputs, making a selection and following it through to implementation. The technology is relatively new and a book such as this takes an objective view of the advantages and disadvantages. Of valuable assistance too is reference to plants already in production and to manufacturers.

4-0 out of 5 stars numerous advantages
Given the rising kerfuffle over energy prices (oil and gas), this book is timely. Soares describes the rise of microturbines. A method for distributing electricity generation on a far smaller scale than is often done today, at least in developed countries. It certainly does not obviate the need for the large, megawatt producing turbines that are currently deployed. But those are expensive. And tend to be most economical when the users (like a city) are nearby. Since this minimises tranmission losses.

What if the users are widely dispersed? Or if there is essentially one user, like a small factory. Here, microturbines shine, where larger turbines would simply be uneconomic.

Other advantages are described in the book. Potentially, less emissions of pollutants. Another is the prospect of using unconventional fuels, like landfill gas. Or manure gas. ... Read more

Product Description

Authors have tried to strike a balance between a short book chapter and a very detailed book for subject experts. There were three prime reasons behind doing so: first, the field is quite interdisciplinary and requires simplified presentation for a person from non-parent discipline. Second reason for this short-version of a full book is that both the authors have seen students and technically oriented people, searching for this type of book on wind energy. Third reason and motivation was considering engineers who are starting their career in wind industry. This book is targeted to present a good starting background to such professionals.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The slow growth of power transmission systems relative to the large growth in demand for power has played a major role in higher electricity prices and reduced reliability in a number of areas across the United States in recent years. This book evaluates the potential of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power technologies to address existing problems with the U.S. electric power transmission grid, especially problems with transmission constraints. Among other findings, the authors conclude that HTS underground cables provide an attractive retrofit option for urban areas that have existing underground transmission circuits while avoiding the expense of new excavation to increase capacity. When operated at high utilization, HTS cables provide energy savings benefits as compared with conventional cables or conventional overhead lines per unit of power delivered. Whether these energy savings benefits lead to life-cycle cost savings depends on the cost of electricity and, in the case of conventional overhead lines, on siting constraints because overhead lines are typically much cheaper to install than underground cables. In addition, HTS cables can provide a parallel transmission path at a lower voltage to relieve high-voltage transmission constraints. ... Read more

Product Description
The availability of clean, renewable power is without question going to be the defining challenge and goal of the 21st century, and wind will lead the way.

Internationally acclaimed wind energy expert Paul Gipe is as soberly critical of past energy mistakes as he is convincingly optimistic about the future. The overwhelming challenge of transforming our world from one of fossil carbon to one of clean power seems daunting at best?and paralyzingly impractical at worst. Wind Energy Basics offers a solution.

Wind power can realistically not only replace the lion?s share of oil-, coal-, and naturalgas? fired electrical plants in the U.S., but also can add enough extra power capacity to allow for most of the cars in the nation to run on electricity. Gipe explains why such a startlingly straightforward solution is eminently doable and can be accomplished much sooner than previously thought?and will have the capacity to resuscitate small and regional economies.

Wind Energy Basics offers a how-to for home-based wind applications, with advice on which wind turbines to choose and which to avoid. He guides wind-energy installers through considerations such as renewable investment strategies and gives cautionary tales of wind applications gone wrong. And for the activist, he suggests methods of prodding federal, state, and provincial governments to promote energy independence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book for Wind Power Basics and Public Policy
Paul has well captured the basics of wind power in an easy and understandable way.The book is a delight to read. What I didn't expect and have not read before is Paul's excellent commentary on wind power public policy.Europeans tend to build community based wind whereas Americans build corporate based wind. This means that in Europe, individuals tend to benefit financially from wind whereas as in the America, corporations tend to benefit. Very interesting stuff here. Also, public policy is very different as well, with feed-in tariffs being popular in Europe and the USA tending to supply money up front to build projects (a big mistake).Additionally, anyone considering vertical axis wind mills or ducted fan based windmills might want to read what Paul has to say first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
An interesting book, just not what I expected.Thought it would give me information about how to select a wind turbine and it is all about telling you to invest in a commercial size unit rather than a household size unit. Not much information about starting an LLC or raising millions either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to wind energy
Paul Gipe is not only a leading authority on wind energy but he is an exceptional teacher. This second edition of Wind Energy Basics covers most of the current models of wind turbines on the consumer and commercial market as of 2009. The book is an excellent introduction to wind energy that will serve both potential wind turbine buyers and those interested in wind energy well. There is some math involved but nothing over basic high school algebra and it is kept to a minimum. This is a great, inexpensive way to learn about wind turbines. If you are more interested in design and want more in depth analysis, Paul's other book, "Wind Energy", is an excellent choice.
