Product Description
Gabriel the umbrella cockatoo was hatched on December 13, 2008 to proud parents Samantha and Caspar Cockatoo. Author Alecia Houston is the pleased owner of the cockatoo family and says Gabby was a big surprise, since she had owned the pair of cockatoos for 14 years and there had been no other births.Four years before Gabby came along, Alecia had an aneurism and needed brain surgery. Afterward, she developed severe epilepsy and was no longer able to work as a veterinary technician. "It was devastating to me to not be able to do what I loved or any other job. As a result, I became very depressed. While Gabby, of course, was not a cure, he certainly made things better!"This wonderful children's book details Gabby's daily antics. "He does not allow me to get down on myself. He truly changed my life in remarkable ways. People do not realize how the comfort and support of an animal of any kind that you love can enrich your life!"Here is the true story of Gabby Cockatoo, what he has meant to the author, as well as her efforts to raise funds for animal rescue. Reading about Gabby's little tricks and talkative nature can bring anyone out of a bad mood.Author Alecia Houston wishes everyone could have the pleasure of spending one day with Gabby. The author lives with her husband and son in Columbus, Ohio, and is writing a sequel.Artist Lauren Luna is also from Columbus, Ohio. Her work has gained national recognition with showings in major galleries. Publisher's Web site: http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TheStoriesTrueOfGabbyCockatoo.html ... Read more

Excerpt: The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii), also known as Banksian- or Bank's Black Cockatoo, is a large cockatoo native to Australia. This species was known as Calyptorhynchus magnificus for many decades until the current scientific name was officially conserved in 1994. It is more common in the drier parts of the continent. Five subspecies are recognised, differing most significantly in beak size. Although the more northerly subspecies are widespread, the two southern subspecies, the Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo and the South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo are under threat. Adult Red-tailed Black Cockatoos are around 60 centimetres (24 in) in length and sexually dimorphic. Males are completely black in colour, excepting their prominent red tail bands; the slightly smaller females are brownish-black with yellow barring and spotting and have yellow-orange tail stripes. The species is usually found in eucalyptus woodlands, or along water courses. In the more northerly parts of the country, these cockatoos are commonly seen in large flocks. They are seed eaters and cavity nesters. As such, they depend on trees with fairly large diameters, generally Eucalyptus. Populations in southeastern Australia are threatened by the reduction in forest cover and by other habitat alterations. Of the black cockatoos, the red-tailed black is the most adaptable to aviculture, although black cockatoos are much rarer and much more expensive outside Australia. The species complex was first described by the ornithologist John Latham in 1790 as Psittacus banksii, commemora...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1938172 ... Read more

The island is currently managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust which is currently revitalising the island as a landmark harbour attraction, with commercial maritime activity, cultural events and a campsite operating alongside interpretation of the island's heritage. Today Cockatoo Island retains many remnants of its past. Its prison buildings have been nominated for World Heritage listing, along with other convict sites around Australia. Large workshops, slipways, wharves, residences and other buildings retain the texture of the island's industrial past. Always a Sydney landmark, Cockatoo Island commands magnificent views of Sydney Harbour. A campsite opened on the island in 2008, and campers can bring their own tents or take a camping package, which includes a pre-erected tent. The island's views of the Harbour Bridge and harbour make it a popular spot for watching the New Year's Eve fireworks, attracting over two thousand campers for its second New Year's Eve event in 2009. Two heritage dockyard residences are now also available as holiday houses. The island ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=593740 ... Read more

Excerpt: Norfolk Island -Norfolk Island was first settled by East Polynesian seafarers either from the Kermadec Islands north of New Zealand or from the North Island of New Zealand. They arrived in the fourteenth or fifteenth century, and survived for several generations before disappearing. Their main village site has been excavated at Emily Bay, and they also left behind stone tools, the Polynesian Rat, and banana trees as evidence of their sojourn. The harakeke (Phormium tenax), or New Zealand Flax Plant, was brought to Norfolk Island either from New Zealand directly or from Raoul Island (Sunday Island) by these Polynesian settlers..The final fate of these early settlers remains a mystery. The first European known to have sighted the island was Captain James Cook, in 1774, on his second voyage to the South Pacific on HMS Resolution. He named it after the Duchess of Norfolk, wife of Edward Howard, 9th Duke of Norfolk (1685-1777). The Duchess was dead at the time of the island's sighting by Cook, but Cook had set out from England in 1772 and could not have known of her May 1773 death. Cook went ashore on Tuesday 11 October 1774, and is said to have been impressed with the tall straight trees and New Zealand flax plants, which, although not related to the Northern Hemisphere flax plants after which they are named, produce fibres of economic importance. He took samples back to the United Kingdom and reported on...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21422 ... Read more
