Product Description

Inspired by a year of hiking 120 desert canyons, Where the Rain Children Sleep is nature writing in the best tradition of Edward Abbey, Ellen Meloy, and Craig Childs. Much more than one man’s memoir of his time in these canyons, it is an eclectic, well-informed, critical, and in-depth collection punctuated by flashes of humor and whimsy. The vivid thread connecting these essays is the Navajo concept of a “sacred geography.”

Michael Engelhard has traveled and explored the Southwest for close to twenty years. His heartfelt portrayal of this region straddles the fences normally separating natural history, ethnography, personal reflection, and travel narrative. These essays spring from a growing concern that the song of the land, the stories of these places, and the voices of their nonhuman and indigenous inhabitants might not be heard against the din of bulldozers, powerboats, turbines, and four-wheelers.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring look at the land
This is a wonderful book for those who have never been to the Colorado Plateau, and especially for those who are familier with it.In addition to being a very talented writer, Michael looks at the land from many angles: physical geography, anthropology, geology, geomorphology, ecology, history, and he reveals how the land makes him feel. The reader who invests in this excellent book will surely have a better understanding of the Colorado Plateau, a spectacular landscape, but in addition, will be inspired to go there and to look at the land in a new and more meaningful way.Even if you never go there, this book will influence how you look at your favorite landscapes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A long-awaited new perspective
"Where the Rain Children Sleep" has quickly become one of my most cherished desert books. When something as heavy a a hardback makes it into my list of necessary backpacking items, that says something. What I appreciate the most about Englehard's writing is his gift of a new persepctive to the reader. Some of us have frequented these desert places Englehard writes of, but with eloquence and a spiritual connectedness with the land, Englehard insight is like seeing the desert in new colors. To come upon these desert places again, I think of them differently--that is to say, more spiritually aware and culturally informed. This is a real treat for anyone who considers the Colorado Plateau a place of mind, body, and soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Gift
Engelhard's developed and articulate voice proves to be a thoroughly competent guide for a literary journey to the nooks and crannies of the Four Corners region. He has weaved his interest in anthropology and his zest for adventure into a blend that offers readers a unique perspective on equally unique places. I recommend buying two copies of Where the Rain Children Sleep -- one to keep in good shape on your bookshelf, the other to tote around with you on your own adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than a Sacred Geography
Through masterful prose, Michael Engelhard indelibly paints the landscape of the Colorado Plateau on the canvas of our hearts and minds. Those of us who, like him, love the southwestern desert and its magnificent canyons discover that, indeed, there ARE words to describe what we see, what we feel, and what we take with us from our encounters with this land. His descriptions give voice to our speechlessness in the face of the overwhelming beauty of the landscape.

What began as a plan to hike 120 canyons in tribute to those lost to the damming of the Colorado River at Glen Canyon became, as his subtitle says, a "sacred geography."But it is so much more. It is also an adventure, a personal journey, and a love letter to the physical and spiritual forces that carved these canyons and to those in whose footsteps he walks.

As a reader, I hiked beside him and listened to his heart. I paddled down the Green River with him and felt my shoulders ache from the effort. I marveled at the play of light and shadow on canyon walls. I saw again those canyons I knew, but I saw them with new eyes, and I understood more clearly my own fascination with this land.

Even readers who have never set foot on the Colorado Plateau will be touched by the beauty and lyricism of Engelhard's style. They, also, will be drawn onto the rivers or into the Maze, losing themselves, like him, in order to find themselves. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good luck.
This book contains lots of information about the geology of the Colorado Plateau... the problem is that it's incredibly difficult to read, even for folks like me who studied geology in the Southwest. For one thing, it provides little overview information, which would help introduce key concepts and tie them together. (Of course, tying key concepts together might be easier if the author were comfortable with plate tectonics as a driver for the structural features of the region... but that's another story). The fact that this book is chock full of mistakes--for example, referencing figures that don't actually exist--doesn't help, either. In fact, I generally found the illustrations to be more confusing than helpful. They never appear in places where they'd actually help you understand the text, and when they do appear, they're often confusing because they lack labels... or, worse yet, they are not discussed at all. It's too bad; with a good editorial and peer review, this book could have been a worthwhile reference. I definitely would not recommend it for the lay audience. ... Read more

Product Description
When it came to labeling cities, towns, counties, crossroads, mining camps, rivers, forests, peaks, and passes, Colorado place namers looked to an array of sources for ideas. Many simply memorialized themselves and their families--Florence, Howard, Lulu City, Dacono (Daisy, Cora, and Nora combined)--or more well-known honorees--Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Kit Carson, Montezuma, Ouray. Some paid homage to explorers, war heroes, politicians, railroad executives, plants, animals, or landforms. Still others went for the more unusual or creative--Boreas Pass bears the name of the Greek god of the North Wind; Egnar is range backwards; Kim was inspired by the Rudyard Kipling novel; Artesia was renamed Dinosaur in 1965 to capitalize on tourist traffic headed to nearby Dinosaur National Monument; Almont was named for a horse, Gulnare a cow.

In 1001 Colorado Place Names, Maxine Benson scrutinizes the most popular, interesting , and unique place names in the state. She discusses how the chosen names originated and what changes they have undergone. Included are Colorado's 63 counties, 716 past and present settlements, and 56 "fourteeners" (peaks more than 14,000 feet in elevation) along with other places known for their historical, geographical, geological, or onomastic significance. Benson also provides pronunciation of unusual names, county locations, post office dates, population figures, and anecdotes galore. The result is a mosaic of information of Colorado history, ethnicity, families, events, politics, settlement patterns, and local lore.

Combining previous place-name research and new findings, Benson takes us on a colorful, entertaining, and educational journey through cities and towns, across the plains, and over the mountains. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What's in a Name? Actually quite a lot if you get this book
What's in a Name?Actually, quite a lot as you will discover if you get this interesting, informative book. As a non-native of Colorado I have often wondered at, and about, some of the names I encounter when enteringthe outskirts of a city, town or settlement. For instance, what wouldmotivate someone to name a town Firstview, or Last Chance, or Ophir?Moretimes than not my inquiries of locals or natives were less thansatisfactory. It is amazing the number of citizens that do not know why orhow their community received its name. Thus, you can imagine my delightwhen I discovered this gem of a book.No longer do I have to rely onfinding the right person in a town to provide me with the source of thetown name or visit the local library to satisfy my curiosity. The bookprovides historical, geographical, and geological information on Coloradocities, towns, settlements, villages, and crossroads within all 63 presentday counties. In addition, there is an abundance of stories associated withthe naming of the sites that simply "seemed worth telling." Thetown of Ophir was named after a verse in the bible, 1 Kings 9:28 which somesay has sustained the town. Some say Telluride, the famous ski resort, wasnamed for the chemical element Tellurium even though the area contains noTellurium!Others say that prospective visitors were warned by prospectorsand miners:"To Hell You Ride." 19th century literary interestsled to the naming of Montrose. The name was selected from the popularworks of Sir Walter Scott, specifically his 1819 novel The Legend ofMontrose. Ah, but there is more, much more.Want to know about Delta, SawPit, Silverton, Aspen? What about Firstview and Last Chance? They, andmany more, are all here. If you are a history buff, traveler, or justcurious about Colorado place names this is the book for you.It isinexpensive, just the right size to take with you in the car, and easy toread. Now, what is this about Mount Sneffels and Jules Verne's A Journeyto the Centre of the Earth?...(p.151). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Something here for everyone
This poetry anthology by 12 Colorado writers is a real keeper. The backgrounds of the poets are as diverse as their poetry. Whatever your taste in poetry you are sure to find something that speaks to you. Humor, regret, nature, politicss, love, and a dash of magic are all represented in light and darkness. The diversity of the poetry is amazing considering the writers all reside on the common ground of the Western Slope of Colorado. Wallace Stegner, dean of writers of the West, wrote that "...no place is a place until it has had a poet..." If that is true, the Western Slope of Colorado is truly a place thanks to these poets. This collection, now in it's second edition, is a must have for anyone remotely interested in contemporary poetry of the first rank. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area is a United States Census Bureau defined Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in the State of Colorado that includes the City and County of Denver and nine suburban counties. The Census Bureau estimates that the population was 2,357,404 on 2007-07-01, an +14.23% increase since United States Census 2000. In 2007, 50.7% of Coloradans lived in the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield MSA. The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield MSA, the Boulder MSA, and the Greeley MSA comprise the larger Denver-Aurora-Boulder Combined Statistical Area. Local residents generally use the term Denver area or Denver metro area which may informally mean anything from the continuously urbanized area within the six central counties of the MSA to the Front Range Urban Corridor north of Colorado Springs and south of Fort Collins. The central part of the MSA includes the City and County of Denver and its three immediately adjoining counties: Jefferson County to the west, Adams County to the north and east, and Arapahoe County to the south and east. The continuously urbanized area extends northwest into the City and County of Broomfield, bordering Jefferson and Adams counties, and south into Douglas County, adjoining Arapahoe County. The most prosperous parts of the area are in the south, while the most industrialized areas are in the northeast, specifically in the northern part of Denver proper and extending to areas such as Commerce City in Adams County. Also included in the MSA defined by the United States Census Bureau are four rural counties that are not popularly considered part of the Denver metro area. Chapters: Mountain Peaks of Colorado. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 205. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: This article comprises three sortable tables of the major mountain peaks of the U.S. state of Colorado. Topographic elevation is the vertical distance above the reference geoid, a precise mathematical model of the Earth's sea level as an equipotential gravitational surface. Topographic prominence is the elevation difference between the summit and the highest or key col to a higher summit. Topographic isolation is the minimum great circle distance to a point of higher elevation. This article defines a significant summit as a summit with at least 100 meters (328.1 ft) of topographic prominence, and a major summit as a summit with at least 500 meters (1,640 ft) of topographic prominence. An ultra-prominent summit is a summit with at least 1,500 meters (4,921 ft) of topographic prominence. There are three ultra-prominent summits in Colorado. All elevations in this article include an elevation adjustment from the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD 29) to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). For further information, please see this United States National Geodetic Survey note. The following sortable table lists the 55 highest Colorado mountain peaks with at least 500 meters (1,640 ft) of topographic prominence. Each of these 55 summits exceeds 4,000 meters (13,123 ft) elevation. Note: Compare this table with the List of Colorado fourteeners which includes peaks with at least 4,267.2 meters (14,000 ft) of elevation and at least 91.44 meters (300 ft) of topographic prominence. The 11 highest peaks are the same on both lists, but this list of 4000 meter peaks excludes low prominence summits like Torreys Peak, and includes high prominence, although slightl...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12059107 ...
