The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. Volume 2, published in 1847, consists of letters of Christopher Columbus to the Treasurer of the King and Queen of Spain, describing his first, third and fourth voyages, and a letter from Diego Alvarez Chanca, a royal physician who went on the second voyage and reported his experiences to the town council of Seville. In this edition by R. H. Major, the letters are given in the original Latin and Spanish with an English translation, editor's preface, explanatory notes and index. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Putting the voyages of Christopher Columbus in perspective
"Christopher Columbus and the First Voyages to the New World" makes the case that what Columbus did in 1492 was "the most momentous miscalculation in history."Stephen C. Dodge tells the story of the stubborn captain-general who led at iny fleet of three ships from the Spanish port of Palos that August.Columbus was convinced that by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean he would reach the Indies and claim the riches coveted by all of Europe for Ferdinand and Isabella, the king and queen of Spain. They sponsored the expedition that after a voyage of a little more than a month discovered an island gateway to two new continents that had been forgotten by whatever Europeans had ventured that far in the past.

The meeting of Europeans and the native peoples of the Americas on the tiny island of San Salvador was arguably the most momentous in the history of civilization.Although Dodge only touches on the treachery, mayhem, slavery, and genocide that followed that first peaceful encounter, such things are much on the minds of students today who see Columbus as the father of all of the evils of the world represented by dead, white, male Europeans. The flip side of the coin is the entirely new civilization that Europeans built in the New World on the ruins of their old one.

The Columbus of Dodge's book is a man who made three voyages of discovery to the Americas, all of which were filled with high adventure and made possible by his uncanny seamanship. But he was also a man who died bitter and neglected, not to mention unaware that he had given Spain the foundation for a massive empire that would make it a world power. The book begins with the first voyage to the Americas and then goes back in time to tell how Columbus first tried to persuade the Portuguese to underwrite his enterprise to the Indies before getting the backing of the Spanish.Chapters are devoted to the rest of Columbus' voyages and then the attacks that targeted Columbus after disillusionment over the realities of the New World made him the devil incarnate to his opponents on Hispaniola. The last chapter on "The High Voyage" tells of how Columbus died hurt over the loss of his privileges and feeling he had been cheated by the Spanish crown. In the middle of the book you will find "Widening the Globe," a photo-essay in color of maps and paintings reflecting the world of Columbus. The rest of the book is illustrated with black & white paintings, etchings, woodcuts, maps, writings, and artifacts, most of which are fairly contemporary to the life of Columbus.

This volume will provide young students with an understanding of who Columbus was and what he did in the context of the era in which he lived.Although some of the information about Columbus is now in doubt (that recent special on cable television convinced me that Columbus was really Spanish, not because of those failed DNA tests but because most of what we have written in his own hand is in Spanish and none of it is in Italian), his voyages and what happened afterwards are the core of this book and remain solid.Other sources will certainly provide attacks on the consequences of what Columbus did, but understanding his accomplishments in the context of his time is a necessary foundation for all of the latter criticism as well as for any attempt to judge the man fairly.

The World Explorers series of 33 volumes is divided into four categories that recount the exploits of the scientists and sailors, missionaries and soldier, mountain men and astronauts, whose journeys of exploration advanced human knowledge. The first looks at explorers of the ancient world such as the Vikings explorers of the 9th-11th centuries along with Marco Polo and the medieval explorers. The other three parts cover the three great ages of exploration. The first is the era of Columbus and Magellan in the 15th-16th centuries when the New World was discovered and explored. The second is the age of science and imperialism made possible by the scientific advances of the 17th century where the world's last two undiscovered continents, Australia and Antarctica, were discovered and the entire world was mapped. The final age looks at the ambitious quests of the 20th century with the exploration of the depths of the ocean and the final frontier of space.

Product Description
This book contains the daily logs kept by Columbus—himself—and by Magellans’s scribe, Antonio Pigafetta, on their fateful voyages to the unknown Americas and subsequently around the world.
These voyages have unequivocally changed and impacted on the western world like no other event except for the advent of Jesus Christ.
The logs herewith are the first translations into English, and read like any modern adventure story such as Around the World in 80 Days.
In one of his essays, Adolph Caso takes on the polemics surrounding the persona of Columbus—especially the issues of Leif Ericson—with the forged Vinland Map; the issue of Columbus being a Jewishs—with the claims that Columbus secretly worked his Jewish brothers to find a Jewish state in the New World; and whether America should have a Columbus Day. Giacomeelli, on the other hand, tells the story of how America got its name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Setting History Right
Mr. Sale cites the journals of the men who came to the New World with Columbus and tells their story and the story of the Taino, Arawak, and Carib people who suffered under Columbus and his men.It is a sad story, but one that must be told if ever we are to get our history right.Mr. Sale is to be congratulated and thanked for his tremendous efforts to work to set the record straight. We have a long way to go toward that end. It's high time. This is a book well worth your reading.5 Stars!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a joke.

This book creates a few myths of its own. for a Solid biography of Columbus read Samuel Eliot Morison's Admiral of the Ocean Sea.

4-0 out of 5 stars An inevitable book about an inevitable shame
This is a well written and thought provoking book.I read it awhile back(1992) and really enjoyed it.I recommend it highly. However, I wouldlike to share a few thoughts on the topic and approach of the book.Inretrospect, it hardly seems fair to blame Columbus and the Europeans.Ifeel if we must blame something we should blame Human Nature instead.

Sale makes a strong case that the European discovery of distant yethabitable lands across the Atlantic was a huge tragedy for all involved, especially to the Native Americans - the conquered.Granted there wasgreat violence and horror unleashed by this world shaking event, but, Iwould ask - "How else could this have happened?".The tragedywas inevitable. At anytime during Western history, if such an encounterwere to take place, I think it is reasonable to assume, human nature beingwhat it is, that the same tragic results would have occurred. We cannotpretend that Europeans explorers of ANY generation, save our own, wouldhave taken with them a 20th century cultural sensitivity (a commodity thatSale apparently has in great quantity) or anthropological curiosity.

Furthermore, we shouldn't be lulled into believing that because theNative Americans were not as efficient killers as where the Europeans, thatthey somehow lived in an idyllic peace.Human nature being what it is, wesee the same kind of religious fanaticism, the same proto-nationalism, anddesperate warfare, egocentric monarchs and power-drunk clerics that markEuropean history. The Incas, Mayas, Aztecs, Chibcha and Arowat peoplesbelieved THEIR gods to be universal, and THEIR way of life was ordained byheaven. The Incas and Aztecs conquered vast numbers of materially inferiorpeoples and brought them the "truth" of their religion as well asthe benefits of their civilization, ie. trade and protection.Much thesame way the Spaniards, Portugues, and French will do in post-ConquestLatin America.

I think that Columbus, for all his flaws and failings isnonetheless heroic simply for having the determination to arrive. If hedidn't do it, someone else would have - and the glory and blame would haverested with that person. The conquest of paradise was a shame, but it wasan inevitable one - sooner or later someone would have done it.I rememberon Columbus Day 1992 going down to see the statue of Columbus in front ofUnion Station in Washington, DC - only to find "the discoverer"drenched in blood red paint."what a shame"

For those who areinterested in the topic, I highy recommend John Hemming's Conquest of theIncas - An equally fascinating book but one that has the advantage of beingeven-handed, open-minded and fair.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book to Understand the Columbus Myth
I came upon Kirkpatrick Sale's The Conquest of Paradise years ago as I was researching what happened in the New World when Columbus showed up.After having read dozens of books on the issue, Sale's book probably stands asthe most important single volume in understanding the Columbus Myth and howit came into being.I used his book significantly in writing of my ownresearches into the Columbus Myth and other lies I was taught as a child. If you want one book to begin understanding why we have a national holidaynamed after the man who initiated history's greatest genocide, The Conquestof Paradise is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absorbing & fascinating
A must-read for the student of Columbus and the conquest of the New World that tells the story of the Great Discoverer as it has never been told before. Be prepared, for it shows Columbus as the product of a sickly anddispirited Europe convinced of the impending end of the world. It revealshim to be a rootless and lonely man who had difficulty getting along withhis fellow Europeans and had little or no understanding of the lands hediscovered and later governed. The book also dispells many enduring myths, such as how Queen Isabella supposedly pawned her jewels to finance hisvoyage, tales of mutinous sailors who believed the world was flat, and howColumbus supposedly died in obscure poverty. Read this book & you'llsoon discover why there was such a backlash against the 500th aniversarycelebration in 1992. There is a fascinating section that deals with theholocaust inflicted against the Indians, with stories and recollections ofunbelieveable cruelty and astonishing horrors committed by the Spanish, including Columbus himself. Later chapters deal with his enduring legacy.Included is a look at the pros and cons of the Noble Savage-asenvironmentalist controversy. Well-written, engaging, and superblyresearched. In my estimation, this is THE book on Columbus! ... Read more
