Excerpt:A tree bog is a form of outside toilet which has willows, nettles and other nutrient-hungry plants planted around it. The faeces are held in a chamber open to the air which allows it to decompose rapidly, feeding the trees around it. Unlike a conventional compost toilet, a tree bog should never need emptying. Effectively, it is a system for converting human faeces to biomass. The tree bog was invented by Jay Abrahams of Biologic Design in the UK after he observed that the trees around the place where faeces were deposited were particularly vigorous. Tree bogs can be considered examples of permaculture design. The tree bog is a simple method of composting wastes, and since its introduction by Biologic Design in 1995 over 500 tree bogs have been built in Britain. They have been on sites ranging from fruit farms and pick-your-own enterprises, campsites and an angling lake to annual festival sites, remote/low impact dwellings holiday cottages and churches. A tree bog can be created if one is on the mains but wishes to lower the environmental impact of sending wastewater to the sewage works. The tree bog has attracted the attention of NGOs and aid workers who hope to develop its potential for shanty towns or refugee camps - anywhere that water is scarce and the population pressure on resources is high. Most regions have vigorous and useful plants which, if willow is not available, can be used (e.g. Gliricidia sepium or Quickstick in the subtropics). Thinking Dirt
The copyright date makes this book seem long in the tooth, but some topics are constants and change little over the years.
"Soil and Composting"is about soil enrichment and the art of composting in about equal measures. After all, the whole point of composting is to enrich the soil to grow healthy plants.

There's much to like about this composting and gardening guide. For the beginner are annotated photos and graphics as well as helpful charts dealing with compost, mulch, and plants. For the experienced grower are facts and figuresthat bear repetition and refreshing,little details that may have been buried in one's memory, and even some new ideas to incorporate into this year's growing season.

I expected a book that dealt mostly with the science and art of composting, but certainly didn't mind the extra information that extends and elaborates the composting information in a practical and useful way. Had I read this book before purchasing a tumbling composter, I may have opted for the tried and true (and cheaper) instead.

This is quite the helpful guide for a weekend gardener and a handy reference book that earns a reserved spot on one's bookcase.

Not so Boring on a Boring Subject
This book is in the Taylor's Weekend Gardening Guides series of books.Like most books in this series, it is easy to read and understand. While ittouches upon some of the science behind why good soil is important, itdoesn't bore the average gardener with laborious explanations. It quicklygets to what most gardeners want to know, that is what to do to improveyour soil's quality and have healthier plants.

$.50 worth of paper
the amount of paper that makes up the book is not even worth $.50. What a let-down - when I received the package I thought it was a CD. Wrong. What a rip off - do not buy if you are a first time composter!!!!

Be warned this book is tiny!
Adequate information and the book is tiny in size. I thought I would be receiving a regular-sized book.

This little book packs a whole lot of practical information on how to compost, including the various approaches you can use.It is written in good, plain English (in Australia) and great good humor.Recommended for the beginner composter, and useful for the experienced.

Simple explanation, good starter!
So many web sites and books have way too much info all at once, and it's easy to be overwhelmed with everything.This one is easy to understand.Good troubleshooting info, and funny in places, too.Lots of info in a tiny book!

Don't waste your money
This book was a total waste of money. The English is so poor, "moisten them real good" that it was painful to read. Also there is a reminder not to drink the "tea" and that animals can't go in the compost.It just didn't seem like the writer edited or proofread.Find another book by a reputable author. ...
