The book was delivered quickly, as advertised.Nearly new.No problems or issues.Great seller - Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This book is very informative for someone who doesn't know anything about computers to those who are pretty knowledgable such as myself. I learned a few new things from this book which was bought for a class, but other than that I wouldn't have bought it for the simple fact I already knew most of what was in the book, but the exercises are helpful for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Prep for the IC3 Exams
I used this book to take and pass the Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3) exams. The book is well written and has just enough information without getting bogged down in minor details. I love the layout of this book, as it is set up so each section corresponds to a specific IC3 exam (Computing Fundamentals, 2007 Key Applications, or Living Online). The quizzes in the back of every chapter are helpful as well. Overall, a great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Conputer Literacy

the book was kept welL! I liked it when I received it! thank you! :)

1-0 out of 5 stars IC3 Unit 2
Books took a lot longer to arrive than any previous items I have ordered through Amazon. When they did finally arrive, I received the wrong book and had to wait for a replacement and then send the other book back to them. BIG hassle and LOTS of wait time!
They were in good condition, but just don't be in hurry to get them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Computer Literacy for IC3
The book came as described, was priced reasonably, and arrived promptly and undamaged. Thank you for this easy transaction!

5-0 out of 5 stars Instruction Manual
I was looking for a book that I could use to provide non-technical students with basic skills. This book was just what I was looking for and helped me plan out my class. I like the way the book is divided into sections that gradually build. Some information is repeated but this helps students to understand the material. Overall a great book if you want to learn computer basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the reason it was written
I have been teaching people of all ages how to use (including all versions of Windows and Office) and build computers for over 6 years now.I just decided to get a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology and was told that I needed to pass the IC3 exams as an introductory course.Thinking that I could probably pass the exams in my sleep, I ordered this book to look over the material anyway just to make sure that I wasn't being overconfident.I learned a couple of obscure things that I hadn't known before and I'm only 1/2 way through the book.It was worth it to me (bought it used).

This book was written assuming that the person reading it knows virtually nothing about how to use Windows or Office. Why does it concentrate on products from Microsoft?Because that is what the IC3 exam will cover.Simple as that - the book prepares you for the exam.

The book does not talk over a person's head - it is plainly written with great examples.Lots of color pictures along the way to illustrate key points too.My only complaint is that it assumes you are part of a class that is teacher lead - which is a problem if you are home-studying like I am.There's no answer key to the questions then, but you should be able to figure out the correct answer as it lets you know which part of the chapter to look in for the answer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Computer Security Basics
This is a truly great introductory security book. It does a very good job in explaining the basics for those that might be new to the topic of security, and manages to do so without the gross oversimplifications that are all to common in books aimed at the uninitiated. While this is definitely more of an introductory text, I was very happy to see good coverage of topics such as encryption and biometrics, and even an appendix covering TEMPEST. A truly great book for learning security concepts. I'm going to look into switching the present text for this one in one of the introductory security courses that I teach.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All
It's a good book for starters. Covers security concepts pretty well even for it's age being published in 1991 I believe. There's a lot of history and references. The author definately did her research. Other than being a starting point there are a lot of other good books out there to fill in the blanks and pickup where Computer Security Basics leaves off. Plus, you can read this book in a week or less.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get your favorite clueless techie up to speed on security...
It still surprises me how many of my information technology colleagues still have no clue when it comes to computer security. This particular book is one I'd feel really good about when it comes to a recommendation to get them up to speed on the subject...Computer Security Basics (2nd Edition) by Rick Lehtinen, Deborah Russell, and G. T. Gangemi Sr.

Contents:
Part 1 - Security for Today: Introduction; Some Security History
Part 2 - Computer Security: Computer System Security and Access Controls; Viruses and Other Wildlife; Establishing and Maintaining a Security Policy; Web Attacks and Internet Vulnerabilities
Part 3 - Communications Security: Encryption; Communications and Network Security
Part 4 - Other Types of Security: Physical Security and Biometrics; Wireless Network Security
Part 5 - Appendixes: OSI Model; TEMPEST; The Orange Book, FIPS PUBS, and the Common Criteria
Index

While not a technical "how to" manual, this book does a great job in dealing with technical issues and concepts.Pretty much all the significant issues surrounding computer and technology security these days is covered in sufficient detail to allow for a functional understanding of the topics. For instance, the chapter on viruses would allow even the most clueless techie to grasp the problems. The authors distinguish between viruses, worms, trojan horses, bombs, and other various nasty surprises. The history is valuable to understand how we got into this condition, and by the end of the chapter you'll know what you need to do to start to combat the problem. From there, you can dive into the more technical details of any one of the areas that pertain to your particular situation.

For a subject that could be painfully dry without much effort, Lehtinen et al. do an admirable job in keeping the reader engaged and involved. If you're trying to educate someone who hasn't kept up with the topic of computer security, this would be a very good starting point...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great computer security book for absolute beginners
This book is the long awaited second edition of a classic book in basic computer security. It is an introduction to the field, not a technical reference. If you need details on a particular aspect of computer security, you should refer to another more specialized book. Since Amazon does not show the table of contents, I review this book in reference to its table of contents:

Part I, SECURITY FOR TODAY
Chapter 1, Introduction
Introduces computer security: what it is and why it's important. It summarizes the threats to computers and the information stored on them, and it introduces the different types of computer security. It notes that if you ignore computer security you could not only be a crime victim but an unwitting partner in crime.
Chapter 2, Some Security History
Describes how we got to where we are today. It summarizes key events in the history of computer security, discusses some of the government standards and programs involved with computer security, and introduces the concept of computer databases and the preservation of privacy.

Part II, COMPUTER SECURITY
Chapter 3, Computer System Security and Access Controls
Introduces computer system security and describes how it controls access to systems and data.
Chapter 4, Viruses and Other Wildlife
Explores viruses, worms, Trojans, and other types of malicious code. The financial effects of malicious programs are discussed first, including that of wasted time. Next it equates viruses and public health - in that once your computer is infected others can be too using your computer as a jumping off point. The history of viruses is also discussed, including the fact that today's viruses and worms are basically malware written by malicious individuals, not computer scientists exploring the limits of technology as was once the case. Remedies, and more importantly, prevention is discussed.
Chapter 5, Establishing and Maintaining a Security Policy
Describes the administrative procedures that improve security within an organization and the three general categories of administrative security. It also introduces business continuity and disaster recovery as part of security. It also introduces the large numbers of laws now on the books relating to computer security, many that carry heavy fines in case of violation. It also mentions that it is important to implement separation of duties so no one person carries the load of security-related tasks.
Chapter 6, Web Attacks and Internet Vulnerabilities
This chapter deals with the basics of the Internet and the Web, as well as several important Internet protocols that keep the Internet humming from behind the scenes. The chapter then discusses vulnerabilities of several of these services, as well as exploits that can be used to attack them. Finally, this chapter gives several suggestions of how users can defend against those who misuse the Internet to steal or annoy.

Part III, COMMUNICATIONS SECURITY
Chapter 7, Encryption
This chapter explains what encryption is and how it protects data. The chapter discusses encryption definition and history. It also discusses DES (the Data Encryption Standard), as well as listing the acronyms of many other encryption algorithms. The chapter also defines message authentication, and lists several government cryptographic programs as well as mentioning cryptographic export restrictions.
Chapter 8, Communications and Network Security
Introduces network concepts and discusses some basic communications security issues. These issues include what makes communications secure, and the definition of modems, networks, and network security. Appropriate steps to keep your computer network safe from attack are outlined.

Part IV, OTHER TYPES OF SECURITY
Chapter 9, Physical Security and Biometrics
Introduces physical security and describes different types of biometric devices. Physical security is largely a system of common sense precautions and photo IDs, where biometrics is a new science where an individual's retina patterns, iris patterns, voice patterns, signatures, and keystroke patterns are measured and identified.
Chapter 10, Wireless Network Security
Describes the workings of wireless networks and the security ramifications of this access medium. Shows that although wireless computing is very convenient, it opens up a whole new world to hackers. Proper antenna selection to keep radio signals confined to the appropriate area is discussed. Careful attention to network cabling--all wireless networks end up connecting to a wired network at some point--also help assure security for the wireless environment.

In summary, this is a great little book for those just entering the field of computer security, as well as individual computer users who want to learn how to not be the weak link in either their professional or home network. It carefully defines terms and even has some good general advice on securing your computer and your network, but you should consult other books for details. I highly recommend it to the beginner who is interested in the field.

1-0 out of 5 stars Less Than Basic Basics Fails To Keep Up To Date
The problem all computer books have is that they are almost out of date before they reach the bookstore as things change so quickly and unfortunately this 10 year old book, although okay for the casual reader who may want an understanding of security generally, is a dinosaur concentrating on old technologies, orange book concepts and not even touching on modern problems like distributed denial of service, e-mail viruses etc. Very disappointing for an O'Reilly book. An update is long overdue. ... Read more

Product Description
Although most educators know they can use computers to successfully deliver reading instruction, many are grappling with how to incorporate computers into their classrooms in ways that best enhance students' literacy learning. This book will help you reflect on and gain insights into the complex nature of the teaching-learning process when computers are used to support students' literacy growth.

Author Maureen Carroll shares her study of how one teacher and her elementary-grade students integrated computer-based literacy instruction into their curriculum. The chapters highlight the three major themes that emerged from the study-collaboration, exploration, and play-to help you understand the diverse ways in which computers both foster and hinder students' literacy development. You'll ultimately discover that technology's function should not be to replace the instruction that is already in place but to enhance it.

Reflection Points and classroom vignettes will provoke thought and discussion about computer-based literacy instruction. Lessons, such as Internet Scavenger Hunt and Family Fun Night, also are offered to help you begin integrating computer use in your classroom.Use this book to imagine new instructional possibilities, undertake new classroom activities, and question your own teaching-learning process as you use computers to support your students' literacy growth. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars No Literacy Instruction
Carroll transcribes plenty of dialogue from her 6 month study in a 2-3 classroom. The students are given so much time to explore andlearn to navigate on the computer that they never accomplish anything. The teacher and author believe this social time and learning to navigate are the most important aspects of technology education. There is nothing wrong with this perspective, yet for a book on using a computer for literacy activities it is suprisingly void of useful activities. ... Read more

Product Description
Andrea diSessa's career as a scholar, technologist, and teacher has been driven by one important question: can education--in particular, science education--be transformed by the computer so that children can learn more, learn more easily at an earlier age, and learn with pleasure and commitment? This book is diSessa1s informed and passionate affirmative answer to that question. While written at a level that anyone with a good acquaintance with high school science can understand, the book reflects the depth and breadth of the issues surrounding technology in education. Rejecting the simplistic notion that the computer is merely a tool for more efficient instruction, diSessa shows how computers can be the basis for a new literacy that will change how people think and learn. He discusses the learning theory that explains why computers can be such powerful catalysts for change in education, in particular, how intuitive knowledge is the platform on which students build scientific understanding. He also discusses the material and social reasons for the computer's potential and argues for "two-way literacies," where everyone is a creator as well as consumer of dynamic and interactive expressive forms. DiSessa gives many examples from his work using the Boxer computer environment, an integrated software system designed to investigate computational literacies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meeting Minds
What willcomputers do to our minds? Will they make us smarter or will they, instead, reduce us to mindless button clickers? Is there anything we can do to influence the outcome? These are the questions motivating Andy DiSessa's thoughts in Changing Minds. The basic premise is simple. The invention of written language led eventually to wide-spread literacy and to a large advance in the capabilities of the human mind.Similarly the invention of computer-based communication tools could create a giant leap in human mental capacity. But that leap will only come about if we develop appropriate tools and establish a culture that encourages their widespread use.Current trends are not encouraging.Few suitable tools are being developed and there is no culture encouraging widespread use. In Changing Minds DiSessa describes the kinds of software we would need to develop if we were to reach for the next level in human mental capability. He describes efforts that have been made to create such software and provides examples of the exciting results that can be obtained when children are given access to such tools. But he also warns of the many obstacles blocking the path to this better future. In the end he is unsure that we will have the will to reach it. If Changing Minds were only about the future of the human mind it would be an important book, but it is much more.It is an opportunity to experience a particularly exciting mind of the present.Reading Changing Minds is rather like spending an intensive weekend with a new friend.Through this book you come to know Andy. You see how he thinks, discover what motivates him and learn many fascinating details about his life.Few authors have ever been able to bring a character to life as effectively as Andy brings forth himself. So pack your bags, bring a little calculus and physics if you can and prepare to enjoy an exciting new friendship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary!
An absolutely amazing book!Stimulating and engaging material is addressed in a totally approachable way.Truly new and complicated ideas are described with expressive and informal language making it greatlyappealing to a reader at any level. The subject matter is extremelyinteresting and far broader than the book's focus on computers andeducation; it ranges from children, to product design, to the internet, tohuman/machine interface, to driving a car, and to the role computers willplay in society in the future. All this fascinating material revolvesaround the author's ideas of a Computational Medium and ComputationalLiteracy (which is very different from computer literacy as we usually usethe term).

The ideas are powerful and, whether or not you agree with allthe conclusions drawn, will likely change the way you think aboutcomputers.I work in a completely unrelated field, but the focus oneducation was still very engrossing and enlightening.Especially the manystories and anecdotes about actual children, and what they had done usingthe Boxer computational medium. The author points out that any high schoolalgebra student can now easily perform the proofs on relative motion forwhich, had it been offered then, Galileo would have surely won the NobelPrize, and proves unarguably that we must continue to modify and update oureducational system to progress as a whole, and to take advantage of the newdevelopments and efficiencies (such as algebra) of a society that isconstantly evolving.

Changing Minds potentially offers invaluableinsight, and at a minimum entertaining intellectual exercises, aboutcomputers and education. From web or software designers, to systembuilders, to CEOs, to technophiles, and to the teachers, administrators, parents, and students in our schools, everyone will take something awayfrom this book. For anyone involved in (or interested in) either computersor education, this book is a must read! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Solid book, but you may just want to get the previous edition, which is much cheaper

This is a solid book, and I highly recommend it.I've had 150 students pass the exam using both this book, and the previous edition of the book:

IC3 BASICS: Internet and Computing Core Certification.

But for nearly $100 for the new version, I would recommend that a cost-conscience buyer to purchase the previous edition (IC3 BASICS: Internet and Computing Core Certification) which sells for around $15-$25 used on Amazon. Why?Because the old version has 98% of the information students need to pass the exam, so why pay a huge premium for that extra 2%?You can easily supplement the previous version with free information readily available on the Internet, and save yourself $75.

Either way, the new version or the old, you can't go wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great gift item from Amazon
I have purchased other 'Idiot' topics for myself. My sister needed something to assist her with learning the computer so I purchased this at Amazon for her. Product shipped quickly, and I have never had a bad shippment with Amazon in all my years of shopping from them. Very pleased with the price, delivery and the product itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Computer Basics and More
Computer Basics, Fifth Edition, is an excellent resource for beginners and anyone else who needs to know the basics associated with using a PC. Recently, when neighbors asked me to help them troubleshoot a problem with their PC, I referred to my copy of Computer Basics, which assisted me in no time at all in helping solve their problem. Leaving their house with my copy of the book was a little more problematic (they wanted to keep it for themselves).

I appreciate how easy it was to find exactly what I was looking for in Computer Basics. The chapters are easy to get through, and the Index provides quick access to just the information I need. I also like that the graphics presented in the book look exactly like they do on screen, and that the call-outs to those graphics are clear and concise.

From setting up email on your PC and finding lost and misplaced items, to the basics associated with using spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation programs like MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, this book really does have it all, and it really is super easy to read and understand!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great buy for all types of computer users!
Joe Kraynak presents computer 'basics' here with wit, charm and plenty of helpful tips and information.Perfect for the true computer novice or even for those computer users who consider themselves PC savvy. 'The Least You Need to Know' sections at the end of each chapter do a great job of hitting the high points.Great job Joe!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tips and tricks even for those who are computer literate
I travel a great deal in my business and inevitably, as soon as I get away from home, my wife has an issue with our home computer. It's 5+ years old and definitely is not state-of-the-art, but still adequate for our needs; primarily e-mail, web browsing, etc. I picked up a copy of this book for her reference when she had a problem and I wasn't around to solve the issue. It's well laid-out, easy to understand and covers the basics thoroughly.

I consider myself to be reasonably computer savvy, but in thumbing through this book, I found several sections containing tips and tricks I didn't know. Chapter 31 was particularly useful; tuneup suggestions that made our old PC run much faster and with greater stability. Who knows - we might get another couple of years out of it. Thanks Joe!

My sister received a computer, but had no clue how to use it.I got this book for her, because it explains things clearly without a lot of jargon.I would have preferred that it had a little more information about some aspects of the computer such as email, but this book has a lot to cover. It can't go in depth about everything (and besides that, the publisher puts out other books in this series that explains individual computer subjects).A good starter textbook for those who are totally new to the computer, however. ... Product Description

Sams Teach Yourself Computer Basics in 24 Hours is the replacement documentation that you don't get with sub-$1000 computers.

It's designed to be an "all-in-one solution" to help users to get up and running on their computer and learn all the software applications that came pre-loaded on their system.

This book is a cost-efficient alternative for the user who will probably not purchase separate books on general PCs, Windows, the Internet, Word, and Excel.

Amazon.com Review
If you want to learn how to use a Windows-based personalcomputer (as opposed to a Macintosh), you'll be confronted with alearning curve. Teach Yourself Computer Basics in 24 Hoursteaches you Windows 98 conventions so you're able to use and enjoyyour computer.

Unlike many other books for new users, this book istext-heavy, foregoing comic-book-like sequences in favor of numberedsteps. The author begins by identifying the parts of a personalcomputer and helping you find the floppy disk drive, the mouse, andthe other major components. She then steps back a bit, explaining howto assemble a typical PC right out of its box and start it up. Then, she details the critical conventions of Windows, explaining what afile is, how to use nested folders, and how to adjust screenresolution. She walks the reader through the Internet Setup Wizard(which the reader will use to get online) and touches on using Windows98's Internet applications. She also explains a little bit aboutMicrosoft Word, Microsoft FrontPage Express, Microsoft Works, andMicrosoft Money 98.

Sometimes the author assumes that the settingson a reader's machine are a certain way, when there is more than onepossibility for the settings--this could confuse a nervous newuser. Aside from this flaw, Teach Yourself Computer Basics in 24Hours is a competent introductory computer guide. --DavidWall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Introduction to the Personal Computer
For several years I volunteered at a couple of senior citizen centers teaching/coaching "seniors" how to use a personal computer. There was no standard text, curriculum, etc. because of the varied interests of the participants. For example, some wanted to learn the internet; others email, or word processing, or spreadsheet basics. Most brand new students came to the class not knowing what a computer actually was or what it did. I eventually settled on this book as my recommendation for a good, all-around introduction to the computer, its functions and uses. It covers all the essential basics of computer use, from an introduction to the machine itself, to the basics of Windows, email, word processing, spread sheets, etc. The supporting graphics are excellent, with lots of screen shots to illustrate each lesson. I got nothing but expressions of satisfaction from the students that bought the book. It's the manual that should come with the computer for the first time or casual user, who wants a good introduction to the computer and a good overview of many of the things it can do.

Okay, really this could be just the book for you...Depends on what your looking to learn. I was supposed to buy this book for a computer class and i did, only to find that nothing in the book was helpful. I passed the class with flying colors, but with no thanks to this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Convert Your Primary Classroom to the 21st Century
Dr. Jean Casey's book is a handbook for converting elementary language arts curriculum into an interactive learning experience for the students. This book displays many examples of student work and it is an easy read for any busy teacher. Dr. Casey teaches how to use technology as a tool to bring writing alive for all level learners. One of my favorite activities that I have used in my classroom has been the Readers' Theatre. The students can write and illustrate their own stories on the computer, print the stories then let the students read and perform in class. Another level of integration with their stories is to convert the documents into a (.jpeg) file to import into the software application Photo Story 3 so they can record their voices reading their stories and create a digital story to video format. Students are so motivated to read and write because they want to use the technology tools to be producers and publishers.
Dr. Casey book will give teachers new ideas and inspire their creativity to come alive in themselves and in the lives of the students. This book also contains many valuable website resources. I would like to mention one such as, Assistive Technologies closes the gap on learning difficulties, [...]
Digital Literacy is a necessity in 21st century teaching!

I would like to thank Dr. Jean Casey for inspiring me in my teaching career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplement for anyone learning basic computer programming
This is a pretty good introduction to basic undergraduate ideas in computer science including different number systems (hex, binary), computing structures (components, architecture), and the concept of program layout and algorithms. This book does not go deep into these concepts, but at least it makes the student aware that these issues exist and gives a very brief idea of how they work. In other words, don't expect any in-depth examination of computational complexity in the section on algorithms. The lion's share of the book is dedicated to simple programming concepts. First the ideas of variables, constants, operators, operator precedence, and input/output are introduced. Then these concepts are used to examine the constructs of control structures, functions, subroutines, arrays, strings, files, and data structures. There is a very basic chapter on object oriented programming that includes the advantages of object orientation as well as an introduction to terminology and program structure. Simple programs are shown as examples and also given as exercises in four popular languages - C, C++, Visual Basic, and Java.

This book was written in 1999, so the properties of the four featured programming languages have changed some, but not enough to nullify the usefulness of this book. I would say that this book is suitable for high school and freshman college students getting their first look at the basics of computing and of programming in any language. This book does not substitute as an introductory textbook for learning the four programming languages used, but it would make a nice supplement.

4-0 out of 5 stars overview of 4 popular languages
This book is unique in that it is both low-priced and provides an overview of four popular languages- C, C++, Java and VisualBasic (I couldn't find anything on Pascal and Fortran, unlike what the Publisher's reviewimplies). It is sometimes heavy going and or lacks detail in places, andwill need to be supplemented by other books and courses. Still, it'sgoodvalue for the price. ... Read more

Product Description
This book brings together a group of internationally-reputed authors in the field of digital literacy. Their essays explore a diverse range of the concepts, policies and practices of digital literacy, and discuss how digital literacy is related to similar ideas: information literacy, computer literacy, media literacy, functional literacy and digital competence. It is argued that in light of this diversity and complexity, it is useful to think of digital literaciesthe plural as well the singular. The first part of the book presents a rich mix of conceptual and policy perspectives; in the second part contributors explore social practices of digital remixing, blogging, online trading and social networking, and consider some legal issues associated with digital media. ...
