not what i expected
The book arrives is good condition. But it contains no frequency information like I thought it would. So its pretty useless to me. But thats not the sellers fault...its mine.

worth a lot more for multiple reasons ...
Although this book may be many years out of date it tells you the nature of the technology being used. The different people using it, what different people use it for, how scanning radio recievers are aquired, as well as the realities and misconceptions of such devices. In addition to this Mr. Eisenson has a uniquely humorous sarcasm in the way he colorfully describes various different stupid things people do with radio scanners such as "how not to repair or clean them" among other things. Basically even though most of the information is obsolete the book is still a lot of fun for people who are amateur radio and/or scanner enthusiasts.
For example towards the end of the book He states in not so many words that there really are no secret frequencies just different ways of encrypting, coding, and transmitting on them. One might argue that this book is like taking the extra fun information that would have been in an old issue of Radio Shack Police Call (which is now defunct) and multiplying it by at least 100 !!! The book really truly is a must have for people who are into radios.

Desperately needs an update
All technology and frequencies referenced are over 15 years old at this point.That's several lifetimes in scanning.For example, trunking and digital transmission are referred to as future technologies!Sadly, as a result, over half of the book is obsolete to the point of being useless.

In its day it was deep enough to keep your average hobbyist busy for several years.Were the author to update it this would be one of the best reference manuals around.

outdated
This book has a copyright date of 1995.Some of the information and laws have changed since this book has been written.The scanners that are on the market today did not exist 12 years ago, therefore most of the information on the scanner itself is hopelessly outdated. Other than radio theory which at times can be confusing, this book is a waste of time.

Modifications in this book are for old model scanners from the early 90's.The publiser should pull this book!

This book is great. I personally knew Mr Bill cheek before he passed on. This book has more info than the average person would use. You must be hardcore to do the mods and have very good eyes. Outdated
Mostly easy to understand info even for a beginner, but be aware that most of the information is academic as it is 10+ years old. These mods are not possible on digital microprosser driven equipment. The section on antennae is very good and accurate.

excellent product very satisfied with this book and also with amazon for a speedy delivery.

Too much basic
This book is too much basic and elementary. The language is poor and little pleasant to read. The scanner mods are very explicit, but you can find similar on the net, with same results. The graphics are very poor, with bad resolution (sounds like a dratf). The topic about antennas is a little more interesting, but it provides little help with decimal system, because all formulas use inches and no convesion tips are provided. It's really a VEEEERY introdutory scanner book. You can find better information on the Internet. I didn't like it.

For beginner or pro
Mr. Pickard has obviously spent a lot of time and research to pick up the best Scanner and antenna mods available. Now, You might say "Why Buy the book, I can find these mods on line free". I have a junk pile ofburned up radios and scanners I'll sell you if you believe that to be thecase. I have literally burned up scores of radios following "Online" advice. The Most recent was almost an expensive 10 meter Radio,something kept saying to me "This isn't right" so I stopped anddrew out the circuit myself.. Bingo.. I had almost torched this baby.

You won't have that problem with Jerry's book, his designs and mods arebased on sound, proven mods and practices on the more popular scanners ofour time. He has good color photos, and walks you through each mod step bystep. He gives you a list of tools needed and how to use them.

Ipersonally enjoyed the section on antennas. Antennas are an oftenoverlooked part of radios, which are probably more crucial than the radioitself! Jerry covers many antenna types, as well as "StealthAntennas". His Stealth antenna may be worth the price of the bookalone if you are ever in a situation where you NEED an antenna but feardiscovery. This book is Solid, well written, entertaining and provides thenovice hobbyist a chance to learn new skills and techniques. Beginner orPro, it doesn't matter, you'll enjoy this book! ... Read more

Experience Necessary...LOTS
The problem with very knowledgeable authors is that they fail to see things from a broader perspective, and they have no idea that what they know is quite a lot. This is a very inadequate book for the new PC builder. The illustrations are no better than zerox handouts. The first chapter titled "Computer Talk" explains terms to people who already know a good deal of it, and it just explains the slang terms or buzz words. One should already know DOS, for example. The book WILL get you to put a PC together, BUT will leave you fending for yourself, when for example you have a dead or defective component somewhere. What will you do when you have to flash your BIOS? What's that? It does not tell you half of what to do when you have a problem after turning it on! Who do you call for tech support? After paying for tech support, you will have easily spent more than the price of a prebuilt PC. Experience is necessary before opening this book. It is a prerequisite. Maybe I'll write a book for the regular person if and when I REALLY learn how to build & upgrade my PC. But it won't be from this book.

This book saved my life!
Here I was, a woman who 2 years ago didn't know how to turn a computer on let alone know how they worked. After taking classes and getting just a little bit brave, I decided to buy. A friend, male, suggested I build myown. Ha! I'll show him. I happened on "Build Upgrade Repair YourComputer" and away I went. I have now successfully built a total of 6computers. The step by step pictures helped as much as the easy to read,and understand, instructions. I color- tabbed the pages and loaned my copyto many friends who in turn purchased their own copies. Alas, the lastperson to borrow my copy has lost it. I am replacing my dog-eared friendwith a new copy. Thank you Mr. Harris for bringing this over 50 female intothe wonderful world of computers.

Excellent reference for someonenew to building
Although a revised edition would be a big help, this book walks you through many of the upgrades a home user could accomplish by themselves. I built my first home PC (an AMD K6-II 350 system) with the use of this bookand found it to be exteremly helpful. Up and running with a license tolearn. Little of value on retouching and restoration
'Scanners For Dummies' was shockingly empty of helpful content. I was looking for useful advice and helpful tips for archiving photos, practical tips for best scanner settings and insights about how to deal with less than perfect images. This book had little information of relevance and nothing of depth.

I must own a dozen 'Dummies' books, and this is by far the least instructive and practical.

That said, who would benefit from reading the book?
- An absolute beginner who needs encouragement to start exploring scanner settings.
- A scavenger who wants a full chapter on how to connect a SCSI scanner that he/she obtained for free on Craigslist.
- Someone who wants instruction on Paint Shop Pro and not Adobe photo applications.
- Users who have no interest in retouching or restoring older photos.

The author, it seemed to me, had little interest or experience in scanning, retouching and restoring older images. To be more specific, the Histogram setting is not even mentioned and the info on adjusting Highlights, Shadows and Gamma settings is so superficial as to be of little or no help. However, the author does excel when discussing hardware issues.

I have since read and recommend as vastly superior 'How To Do Everything With Your Scanner.' Even 'Digital Photography For Dummies' has more detailed and practical help for scanning and restoring damaged photos.

If you buy this book for under $1, you are doing OK. But, if you want detailed and practical advice for scanning and improving photos, look elsewhere.

Great book on scanning
Although I don't have a Microtek scanner like the author has, I was still able to follow along and learned everything I needed to know. This book also has almost as good a selection of novice material on Paint Shop Pro as PaintShop Pro for Dummies! Well worth the money.

Wonderful!
This book told me all I needed, I'm using my scanner just about every day now that I know what to do. (Plus I have it set right to take the best scans) Great coverage of filters and plugins too.

Highly recommended
This book is as good as the amazon editor claims, I got my new HP scanner up and running in an hour so you know the installation and setup chapters were good! The coverage of web graphics is very good and provides lots of tips and instruction. You won't find as much on PhotoShop but the step by step Paintshop pro material is worth its weight in gold. Well written and funny. I am going to add this author to my Dummies watch list!

A MAJOR Disappointment
As a long term fan of the Dummies books, I can't begin to express my disappointment in this offering. Scanners for Dummies is so exceptionally elementary as to offer absolutely nothing beyond how to "push a button" or "move a slider." Nothing is presented that couldn't be discovered by simply turning on the scanner and playing with it for a half hour or so.

The worst part, however, is that much of the information about scanners and Paint Shop Pro is misleading and in several cases, just plain wrong. This is the absolute worst Dummies book I have ever read and, while it is not my first one by Mark Chambers, it may well be my last. ... Read more

Some background on this work
First a disclaimer: I was asked to write the foreword on this book by Carolyn P. Meinel, and I did. I am not terribly proud of it, since somehow the rough copy ended up there unrevised. But that's done and I must live with it. Furthermore, I was not paid for that work, and did not request any payment.

Uberhacker is not a terribly good book, but it isn't as bad as some make it to be either. It is more of a primer designed for absolute beginners, something to get a kid started and interested, with just enough information to get you into trouble - information that is available on the Internet, in a thousand pieces everywhere - and importantly, a book that does take a great deal of care in keeping you out of trouble,or at least warning you about its potential impact on your life. It is THAT information, one rarely attached with what you can find on the Web, that adds solid value to it.

Any 10 year old can find hacking how-to's if interested in the topic, and will probably get them from the same reviewers here that start with "Carolyn is well know in the hacking community..." and go one calling the author an incompetent fraud (unusually kind words from people used to a much cruder vocabulary).

Carolyn P. Meinel isn't a fraud or a bad writer. While her intentions often exceeds her resources, she pulls a competent cataloguing and vulgarization job here, keeping the above in mind. She is careful about what she writes, and how she writes it. Giving youngsters Uberhacker may be the better alternative: It will not land anyone in jail.

What Meinel has, however, is a 20 years talented history of making enemies in the black hat hacking community, a vindictive and vengeful group if there was ever one. A quick web search will show you what kind of mud slinging these guys have done elsewhere. This more than anything is what explains the tone of some reviews written by folks I seriously doubt ever opened a copy.

UberHacker...
"This Product Sucks... buy mine instead!" Those aren't reviews, they're sophomoric and shameless plugs. I wonder how many of these people actually READ the book.

Ugh..
The author of this book is well known in the hacker community.......for being a crook. Seriously, some of the stuff in this book is just beyond nonsense. Go read a more technical book, so you can learn alot more about "Hacking".
