Product Description
The constant changes in technology have made a definitive impact on our daily lives, from work to play. And it is this "play" part around which a lucrative industry has grown. From such humble beginnings as the game of Pong and the now-archaic Commodore 64, video games and computers have come a long way. Computers become obsolete seemingly as soon as they are purchased. Each year brings with it a new, hot game system that allows for more realism and high-tech features than last year's model, and a steady stream of game titles is a staple of any electronics store. Our collective obsession with computer games has led to criticism that we have become too sedentary and neglect "real" life. However, many of these games involve intricate strategies and the use of hand-eye coordination. Aside from the multibillion industry of game production - with such giants as Sega, Nintendo, and Microsoft - considerable academic research has gone into devising the best tactics for game success. The cutting edge of technological thought and development shines in the area of the computer gaming, making what began as a simple and entertaining diversion into a serious and popular field of study and play.

This book serves as a portal to the vast array of literature about computer games. A substantial and carefully selected bibliography is the central feature, with a thorough listing of the most relevant writings on the field of computer gaming highlighted. Further access to this information is then provided by author, title, and subject indexes. In order to stay abreast of the most recent advances in video gaming and computers, one must understand the base of knowledge this book cites, creating a valuable reference resource. ... Read more

Product Description

This book covers recent advances for quantitative researchers with practical examples from social sciences. The twelve chapters written by distinguished authors cover a wide range of issues--all providing practical tools using the free R software.

McCullough: R can be used for reliable statistical computing, whereas most statistical and econometric software cannot. This is illustrated by the effect of abortion on crime.

Koenker: Additive models provide a clever compromise between parametric and non-parametric components illustrated by risk factors for Indian malnutrition.

Gelman: R graphics in the context of voter participation in US elections.

Vinod: New solutions to the old problem of efficient estimation despite autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity among regression errors are proposed and illustrated by the Phillips curve tradeoff between inflation and unemployment.

Markus and Gu: New R tools for exploratory data analysis including bubble plots.

Vinod, Hsu and Tian: New R tools for portfolio selection borrowed from computer scientists and data-mining experts; relevant to anyone with an investment portfolio.

Foster and Kecojevic: Extends the usual analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) illustrated by growth charts for Saudi children.

Imai, Keele, Tingley, and Yamamoto: New R tools for solving the age-old scientific problem of assessing the direction and strength of causation. Their job search illustration is of interest during current times of high unemployment.

Haupt, Schnurbus, and Tschernig: Consider the choice of functional form for an unknown, potentially nonlinear relationship, explaining a set of new R tools for model visualization and validation.

Rindskopf: R methods to fit a multinomial based multivariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) with examples from psychology, sociology, political science, and medicine. Neath: R tools for Bayesian posterior distributions to study increased disease risk in proximity to a hazardous waste site.

Numatsi and Rengifo: Explain persistent discrete jumps in financial series subject to misspecification.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for students.
As a Library Assistant studying for my Library Technician degree this set of books became my best friend. While most colleges or universities will have copies for loan, I found that I oftened added things to the book, thus the importance of having your own copy.

The first volume covers the rules for using and assigning DDC numbers.

The second and third volumes contain the schedules / summaries for actually assigning the DDC number.

The fourth contains the Relative Index (a Library Tech's best friend), which assists in locating appropriate numbers.

I know its a lot of money, but it is well worth it if you are serious about working in this field.

3-0 out of 5 stars memories come back
For researchers into personal computing, Allan has amassed a useful bibliography of key books and articles. He divides these into various lists. Where a list might be about the IBM PC, and another list is about Apple.

Just thumbing through the lists should bring back memories for some readers. You may well have read that book about the rise and fall of Steve Jobs at Apple. Which was written before his triumphant re-entry.

Or perhaps you remember Jerry Pournelle's musings in Byte magazine? Alas, that magazine is no longer with us in hardcopy form. Though Pournelle is still very much around. [And grumpy as usual!] ... Read more

Product Description
Quinn Mitchell is a nine-to-five spy. She's a data analyst for the CIA during the day, and a suburban wife and mother on evenings and weekends. After a series of personal struggles and professional failures, Quinn hopes to find redemption in her newest assignment: a series of bizarre assassinations where victims are found with three-digit numbers tattooed, burned, or carved into their flesh. As Quinn pursues the killer across the globe -- always one body behind -- their lives become entangled in ways neither of them can predict.

This novella by Christian Cantrell (about 13,000 words) takes place in a world bordering on unprecedented change: as oil-based economies shift to hydrogen, the majority of wealth is redistributed across the globe; as aging nuclear arsenals are replaced with even more menacing threats, terrorists try to seize opportunities to tip the balance of power; and as humans become increasingly dependent on machines, massive indexes of information accumulate which can reveal almost anything about anyone to those who know how to use them.

THE EPOCH INDEX is a story about a world changing faster than humanity can adapt to it -- a world which may require us to redefine what it means to be a hero. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Crighton has nothing over this guy!
"... the micro-meteor: an incredibly tiny, very high velocity, and very hot projectile that pierces the heart or brain so quickly that it's usually mistaken for a headache or indigestion until the triggerman is enjoying an espresso and a scone at least three blocks away. When coroners measure cauterized entrance and exit wounds of less than a millimeter in diameter, nobody ever bothers looking for the slug"
This is how Cantrell describes just one of the several terrifying assassin tools-of-the-trade that haunt his stories - often leaving me cringing (in the best sense) from the vivid imagery. His plots are short, succinct and so powerful that their message linger and rattle around in my head for several days after reading.Once started, they're impossible to put down so allot your time accordingly for you will read them to the end in one sitting. Fortunately for those who pride themselves on being punctual, these novellas require less time to read than it would take to plow through a newspaper but for me, I always end up back on the Amazon site looking for another.

I know of no place else where I can receive so much value for less than a dollar. His novellas stack up well with the finest in the genre - or any genre for that matter.
Thank you Mr. Cantrell. Keep up the great work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cantrell Novel Yet
I've enjoyed each of Cantrell's novels but this one is by far the best. This story is light years ahead of all the others.I could not put it down and, though the ending was great I was sorry it was over.

His character development is great in this story but he doesn't short change the reader on his high tech sci-fi.I can't wait for the next one.

A happy Oklahoma reader

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Cantrell story
I liked Containment, and Human Legacy Project was just as good. Brainbox was good, but the story itself was not very attractive to me. Now, if Containment and HLP were excellent, then Epoch Index was excellent to the 10th power.

In the other 3 Cantrell's that I've read, he has done a great job of 'creating' new technology, but in Epoch, what he did was 'explore' whole new branches of science. Epoch Index is absolutely amazing, and brings Cantrell to the level of Asimov, Card, Verne and Wells.

I always enjoy how his stories develop from events that are going on today, be it climate change, the shutting down of NASA, recycling, etc; but in this case he has completely outdone his other works by referencing the LHC and creating a whole new branch of science. I don't want to give away parts of the plot, but thank you Mr. Cantrell for bringing Science Fiction back to life, where it is not just cool lasers that are used, but where science is invented and created. The genre is called Science Fiction for a reason, although lately, most new SF works should fall under the 'Technology Fiction' genre. That has been truly disappointing to me, and I welcome the 'return' of good Sci-Fi.

The plot is unbelievably crazy and awesome (for lack of better words). The plot twists along with the alternating points of view make Epoch Index a story full of suspense and thrill.
I once again note how good Cantrell's endings are. They are hard to surpass.

The book description didn't get me interested in the book, as it didn't sound too much like Science Fiction. The cover looked interesting and having read Cantrell's other works, I knew I liked his style, so I choose to read it, and I don't regret it. Trust me, it is Science Fiction, and it is probably the best you will have read in a long time.

As with all of Cantrell's stories, this one is too short. Please make it longer! The story in Epoch Index is too good to be so short.

A great read overall, highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Follow-up to His Other Works
One of the most enjoyable things in literature is to watch as an author adapts and grows. For Mr. Cantrell, The Epoch Index, while short in length, does an admirable job of addressing some of the concerns/critiques that have been leveled at his other works, primarily his novel, Containment. Most notable of the critic's comments was that the characters in "Containment" lacked depth and were vehicles to carry the technological-focus of the novel. In "Epoch," it's my opinion that the entire story is based around the characters; with their development, motivations and proclivities forming the fabric that the plot is displayed, not the other way around.

Extropians take heart: this is not to say that technology and innovation take a back-seat to pithy characterization -- this is a Christian Cantrell story we are discussing here, so it has more than its fair share of subtle and not-so-subtle futurist and science fiction elements.

With this story, I'm even more excited for the future works of Mr. Cantrell!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best story yet - Please flesh out full novel!
Epoch Index is an excellent hard-to-put-down hi-tech thriller.Highly recommended as are Christian's other short stories. This is my personal favorite so far.His writing style is fantastic in its straight-forward story propelling attention to detail and concepts. That's all I'll say about this story - read it!

My biggest frustration though with his short stories are simply that they are short stories to begin with.Cantrell is *far* too talented to write short stories that are the equivalent of tech demos - great ideas without the hard work to really flesh them out to full novels. In today's world of information overload where we are constantly multi-tasking and taking sips of data from numerous sources, I as well many others I'm sure CRAVE a full satisfying meal of a long form novel.I don't want a story I can finish in one day between elevator rides, car trips, blog posts, etc.I crave the escape and undistracted focus that an excellent novel provides. Please do not underestimate your reader's ability to maintain attention beyond 20 pages. ...
