Product Description
The Java(tm) Tutorial Continued provides accurate, up-to-date coverage of features added to the original core Java platform. Written by the experts, The Java Tutorial Continued employs a hands-on, self-paced, example-driven approach. This book concentrates on JDK 1.2 APIs but also contains the information you need to use the JDK 1.1 versions of the APIs.

The tutorial books, including this book and The Java Tutorial, are the definitive programmers' guides to the core JDK. This book covers a road spectrum of JDK features, including:

The Java Collections Framework
Internationalization
2D Graphics and Sound
JavaBeans(tm)
IDL (Interface Definition Language), which adds CORBA capabilities to the Java platform
Database connectivity through the JDBC(tm)
RMI (Remote Method Invocation)
Security
JNI (Java Native Interface)
Reflection
Other topics such as JAR, the Standard Extension Mechanism, and Servlets

The accompanying CD-ROM contains all the material from both The Java Tutorial and The Java Tutorial Continued in HTML, including the source code for all of the examples. The CD-ROM also has much more, including the JDK and everything you need to start programming with JDK 1.2.

You will come away from this tutorial with an excellent conceptual understanding of the JDK, along with the practical know-how to put the Java platform to work for you.Amazon.com Review
Based on Sun Microsystems' online tutorials, The JavaTutorial Continued: The Rest of the JDK provides anup-to-the-minute guide to essential Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.2features. This book provides material that is absolutely necessary forJava developers who are seeking to get up to speed with the latestrelease of Java.

The book begins with a summary of JDK 1.2 featurescovered throughout the text. It then moves on to the new JDK 1.2collection classes, which, for the first time, give Java programmersaccess to robust, customizable data collections.

After a section oninternationalization (also newly enhanced), the authors show how touse the Java 2D API for 2-D graphics, from creating basic graphicsprimitives to displaying images. The authors include some material onbuilding JavaBeans and then discuss Java Database Connectivity (JDBC)database programming, including new JDBC 2 features such as batchupdates and SQL3 data types. Sections on Java Remote Method Invocation(RMI) and Java servlets show off other ways to use Java in theenterprise.

For the real-world Java programmer, there is perhapsnothing more frustrating than coping with Java's securitymodel. Several chapters within this book help you take advantage ofthe new JDK 1.2 security policy and cover signing Java Archive (JAR)files to permit local file access for both applets andapplications. The book closes with some useful material on the JavaNative Interface for mixing Java with native C/C++ code. --RichardDragan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Java programming
An excellent book - very informative but should be seen as a book to build on the foundation of the Java tutorial - edition 3 or something similar as the content assumes a good foundation of java basics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated now, good if you're two years behind on JDK, though.
Looks like a good tutorial book - however, it's now several generations out of date, which is a problem. Sun keeps updated copies of the books on line, but the limits of printing mean that the bound volumes don't get updated. This covers Java JDK 1.2 - NOT JAVA JDK 5 (the current release).Since there are significant changes between the revisions, this is of limited utility these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Java Tutorial
Excellent book - detailed, comprehensive and yet easy to read and understand. I highly recommend this book for learning and implementing Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Java Book
I bypassed AWT knowing that SWING was on it's way. This book made it simple for me to create great looking GUI's for my apps.Follows the same style of "The Java Tutorial" Second Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great additional volume to the Java Tutorial
This volume largely contains topics newer to Java. The topics includes Collection, Internationalization, 2D, JavaBeans, IDL, JDBC, RMI, Security, JNI, Reflection, JARs, Extensions, and Servlets.

This new volumefollows the tradition of good writing from the original volume. The book isextremely readable and a great source to learn from. Unlike the firstvolume, which I recommend only to beginner, even experienced Javadevelopers will find tutorials in this volume that will make it worth thepurchase price. It is an excellent book for programmers of all levels ofexperience. ... Product Description
The protection of sensitive information against unauthorizedaccess or fraudulent changes has been of prime concern throughout thecenturies. Modern communication techniques, using computers connectedthrough networks, make all data even more vulnerable to these threats. In addition, new issues have surfaced that did not exist previously,e.g. adding a signature to an electronic document. Cryptology addresses the above issues -- it is at the foundationof all information security. The techniques employed to this end havebecome increasingly mathematical in nature. Fundamentals ofCryptology serves as an introduction to modern cryptographicmethods. After a brief survey of classical cryptosystems, itconcentrates on three main areas. First, stream ciphers and blockciphers are discussed. These systems have extremely fastimplementations, but sender and receiver must share a secret key.Second, the book presents public key cryptosystems, which make itpossible to protect data without a prearranged key. Their security isbased on intractable mathematical problems, such as the factorizationof large numbers. The remaining chapters cover a variety of topics, including zero-knowledge proofs, secret sharing schemes andauthentication codes. Two appendices explain all mathematicalprerequisites in detail: one presents elementary number theory(Euclid's Algorithm, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, quadraticresidues, inversion formulas, and continued fractions) and the otherintroduces finite fields and their algebraic structure. Fundamentals of Cryptology is an updated and improved version ofAn Introduction to Cryptology, originally published in1988. Apart from a revision of the existing material, there are manynew sections, and two new chapters on elliptic curves andauthentication codes, respectively. In addition, the book isaccompanied by a full text electronic version on CD-ROM as aninteractive Mathematica manuscript. Fundamentals of Cryptology will be of interest to computerscientists, mathematicians, and researchers, students, andpractitioners in the area of cryptography. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars easier than a book to some of you
For those without a strong mathematical background, the software presented here can be useful in developing a good qualitative understanding of curves and surfaces. The interactive nature of the software lets you develop an intuition about such ideas as the parametric curve and surface, basis functions and Bezier curves.

Some readers will take to this much more easily than a conventional text. The coverage of the common ideas for constructing such items, in computer graphics can be very useful in dealing with more advanced graphics packages that assume this prior knowledge. ... Read more
