Product Description
Conservation and Sustainability in Historic Cities examines how the two key issues of urban conservation and sustainability relate to each other in the context of historic cities, and how they can be brought together in a common philosophy and practice that is mutually supportive. It sets out the theoretical and practical background to architectural conservation and how its perceived relevance and level of attainment can be extended when harnessed to wider agendas of sustainability and cultural identity. Product Description
The unique approach to ecological restoration described in this book will appeal to anyone interested in improving the ecological conditions, biological diversity, or productivity of damaged wildlands. Using sound ecological principles, the author describes how these ecosystems are stabilized and directed toward realistic management objectives using natural recovery processes rather than expensive subsidies. An initial emphasis on repairing water and nutrient cycles, and increasing energy capture, will initiate and direct positive feedback repair systems that drive continuing autogenic recovery. This strategy is most appropriate where landuse goals call for low-input, sustainable vegetation managed for biological diversity, livestock production, timber production, wildlife habitat, watershed management, or ecosystem services. No other book provides such a comprehensive strategy for the ecological restoration of any wildland ecosystem, making this an invaluable resource for professionals working in the fields of ecological restoration, conservation biology and rangeland management. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars One of the few books available on this topic
I had to buy this book for a class. While doing research for that class, I would search the internet for restoration topics. Google returned googlebooks results and this one was near the top. I don't know of other resotration books that focus on repairing damaged areas using the process oriented approach. I would not have bought this book had it not been for a class, but overall it was an interesting read and I would recommend it for anyone interested in restoration ecology or ecology in general. ... Product Description
Since the 1970s sustainability has evolved as a significant mode of thought in nearly every field of intellectual activity. In 1992 the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro brought the ideas of sustainability and development to the forefront of global politics. For historic resources-whether a cultural landscape, town, building, or work of art-which cannot be physically regenerated but only retained, modified, or lost, sustainability means ensuring the continuing contribution of heritage to the present through the thoughtful management of change responsive to the historic environment. This volume brings together contributions from specialists in a wide range of fields-archaeology, architecture, conservation and management, city and regional planning, anthropology, biology, economics-who examine issues of sustainability as they relate to heritage conservation. The topics range in scale from individual buildings and sites to cities, landscapes, and other historic environments. The volume offers a global perspective and demonstrates that conservation must be a dynamic process, involving public participation, dialogue, consensus, and, ultimately, better stewardship. Through its dual focus on theory and case studies, the book also makes an important contribution to the larger debate on quality of life and the environment. ... Read more

Product Description
This book has set out a theoretical framework based on sustainable urban revitalization, and used this framework to propose a model for assessing the level of sustainability in historic urban quarters. It examines how the two key issues of urban conservation/revitalization and sustainability relate to each other in the context of historic urban quarters and how they can be used in the sustainable futures of historic urban areas. Therefore, the aim of this book to set up a model for assessing the level of sustainability of historic urban quarters and to prove the relationship between urban revitalization and sustainability, or in other words, to put the statement about how the revitalization of historic urban quarters would become sustainable. Depending on this aim and the model, a method for developing and selecting the site-specific sustainable revitalization indicators according to different indicator frameworks also are explained. ... Product Description

Repairing, even just painting, an old house with some of today's conventional building materials could begin processes leading to decay, or bring about changes that erode interest and value. This book introduces kinder alternatives, including traditional and sustainable repair methods and philosophies that can also preserve the character and fabric of the smallest old house and which need not cost the earth. Many old houses were built in the days before fossil fuels were exploited, so they were designed to be sustainable—and still can be. The author shows the reader how to prepare old houses for the future by considering the balance between preservation and energy-efficiency. Starting at the top with chimneys and roofs, and working down through the building, the author examines external walls, rainwater disposal, doors and windows, internal walls, floors and ceilings, building services, damp problems, and the importance of "breathability" and ventilation.
