Product Description
In the three hundred years since his death, Cook's reputation has been much discussed, opinion ranging from Britain's celebration of his achievement to more subjective assessments of the long-term implications of his voyages in those countries of the Pacific which he visited. The thirteen essays in this book, grouped in four sections, continue the debate. 'The Years in England' cover Cook's Whitby background and the part played by the Royal Society in the Pacific ventures of the period; 'The Pacific Voyages' investigates the clash between the Endeavour's crew and Aborigines on the banks of the Endeavour River; the process by which Cook and his crews became 'Polynesianised'; Cook's visit to the Hawaiian Islands; and his visit to Nootka Sound on his final voyage. 'Captain Cook and his Contemporaries' views other European explorers in the Pacific, and concludes with an analysis of Russian attitudes towards Cook. 'The Legacy of Captain Cook' compares Cook's death on Hawaii and the later killing of a missionary on Eromanga; examines fluctuations in Cook's reputation; and describes life on board the replica of the Endeavour. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Superlative Rough Draft
This is a very readable professional biography of the voyages of Captain James Cook. Its lucid, flowing style should make reading this work a pleasure rather than a chore. However, Ms Gaines is ambivalent about who her intended audience is.While the text is written on a level for the young, sophisticated terms are sometimes used without explanation-the British pound symbol is explained but the quotation device "sic" is used without explanation, and is sure to confuse children. The paucity of maps is unsatisfactory when dealing with so many exotic place-names-the geographically literate reviewer was constantly consulting an atlas. If she intended to write for an American or European audience, she shouldn't have put the word discover in quotation marks; these places were known to the aboriginal peoples, and they were discovered by the Europeans. In her analysis at the end of the book she deplores the eclipse of Polynesian culture, while failing to note that the Polynesians were as responsible for this loss as were the Europeans. The Polynesians wanted what the Europeans had to offer (e.g., iron tools) as much as the Europeans wanted what Polynesia had. This book is laid out in chapters; is nicely illustrated; and has a timeline, chapter notes, further reading and internet addresses, and an index. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A dangerous journey
Another excellent book in the "You wouldn't want to be" line of books. The series, created by David Salariya, gives a funny approach to learning about history for young students. The student assumes the role of sixteen- year-old Issac Smith who joins the Royal Navy in Britain. Your parents have persuaded a relative, James Cook, to allow you to sail with him. After reading about your duties and what to expect you may want to reconsider? The student will be introduced to his shipmates and what is expected of you. It is not fun. If you don't obey orders you will be flogged. The drawings are hilarious and the hints given on each page are interesting. For example, you are told to eat your bisquits at night so won't see the weevils! Along your journey on the Endeavor you will reach New Zealand and meet the Maoris, a tatooed tribe of people who live there. The life on the seas is harsh but is it worth it? You decide after reading. The young student will learn about the life of a sailor on an exploring expedition. Included is a glossary for easy reference. Recommended for young students studying history and forK-6 and community libraries. ... Read more

Ships "resolution," 462 Tons, And "discovery," 300 Tons, In The Years 1776-7-8-9-80.In the preceding voyage, the question respecting the existence of a southern continent was for the time set at rest, but the practicability of a northern passage to the Pacific Ocean was still an object of so vast importance to England as to excite an earnest desire for the most diligent investigation. It had long been a favourite scheme with the most celebrated navigators, and with the learned men of the day, to discover a shorter and more commodious course to the Oriental regions than by the Cape of Good Hope. This had been attempted in various directions for two centuries and upwards, but the completion of this favourite object was as distant as ever, and the problem of a junction of the two great oceans, the Atlantic and Pacific, by the northern shores of America, was left to be solved in our own time by the several voyages and discoveries of Sir Edward Parry, Ross, Sir John Franklin, Collinson, M'Clure, Sir Leopold M'Clintocfc, Dease, Simpson, Back, Richardson, and Rae— Franklin being now proved, beyond all doubt, to be the first discoverer of a north-west passage. For the conduct of such an enterprise, it was evident that great skill, perseverance, and abilities, were required; and though, by the universal voice of mankind, Captain Cook was the best qualified, no one could venture to solicit him on the subject. The services he had already rendered to his country, the labours he had sustained, and the dangers he had encountered, were so many and so various, thatit was deemed unreasonable to urge him to engage in fresh perils. As an honourable testimony, however, to his merit and... ... Product Description
The Ship tells the exciting story of Captain James Cook's voyage on the Endeavour and describes what happened when a BBC team of volunteers boarded a magnificent replica of the ship to retrace a dramatic stretch of its route from Cape Grafton in Australia to Jakarta in Indonesia. Simon Baker, author and volunteer able seaman, begins by taking a fresh look at Cook and the origins of his first voyage - how it turned from a scientific expedition to observe an eclipse into a far-reaching quest for the Great Southern Continent. Drawing on original journals, he re-examines Cook's motives and reputation, revealing a more complex character than the hero that history has handed down to us. The replica Endeavour provided a unique opportunity to 'test' the achievements of Cook and his company within an authentic eighteenth-century environment. ... Read more

The Ship brings to life Captain Cook's famous voyage of exploration to the South Pacific aboard the square-rigged ship Endeavour. Between August and October 2001 a volunteer crew, sailing an exact replica of Cook's ship, retraced the most perilous stretch of the original voyage from the Great Barrier Reef (off the east coast of Australia) to Indonesia. This book tells the story of Cook's journey through the experience of the modern crew. Featuring original drawings, maps, and artworks, plus spectacular new photographs.
