5-0 out of 5 stars Great for cooking for kids on the go
It seems we're always running out of time at the end of the day and it's great to have some short-cuts that help me get dinner on the table without having to send my four year old to bed late.I use the section on vegetables most often to get last-minute veggies on the table, or to give my daughter something to snack on while the rest of dinner cooks.

I admit I change some details of recipies to suit our tastes, but the cook times are there for me already and I find it easy to double or triple quantities.I could get snarky and "clever" by making jokes about cooking for one, making it seem like a cookbook for the lonely, but a) I use it to cook for my family all the time and b)appreciate the flexibility the book offers by allowing me to prep something to cook for lunch at work, just for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cure for Lonliness
Alone in my dark apartment, having worn my 3 Wolf Moon T-Shirt as well for countless weeks, found this book to be my bible. I sit at my dining room table, playing World of Warcraft night after night, sobbing silently for want of notice by another human being. Pizza boxes piling up, chinese food leftovers filling my fridge, I was beginning to run out of options. I recently lost my job as a Custodial Consultant for sniffing the amonia in the utility closet. My funding for my gourmet meals from such world reknown chefs as Boyardi and Uncle Ben had begun running low. Stumbling in a drunken daze through the local bookstore, my elbow carelessly knocked a book onto the floor as I turned a corner. As I peered down, I saw the title, "Microwave Cooking for One."

Curiously, I picked it up and decided to have a a quick read. As I began flipping through the pages, I began to see that this was no ordinary cookbook. No my friends, this was a book passed down from the Gods themselves, displaying the infinite beauty of their messenger Marie T Smith on the cover. I knew at that moment, that this book would change my life. I purchased it with the last few dollars to my name and brought it home. Because of this book, I now eat like a King. Filet Mignon? Chicken Alfredo? Caviar? Its all in there. Not only do you never need to buy another cookbook, there will never be a book so beautifully written ever again. From that point, I ahve divided my life into two different categories, life before Microwave Cooking for One and life after, much like the Old and New Testament.

From this book I have made more friends than I can count, gained 30 pounds of rock hard muscle, and have a new job as VP of a major financial holdings company. This book worked for me, and I am sure it will work for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lone wolf - looking to make a pack
Sigh... another night of me and the boys...Alpha, Lunar and Windsong (the wolves on the t-shirt i'm wearing). As comforting as they are, they don't know a damn thing about making a meal for me. Tired of stouffers and hungry man i decided enough was enough and I was going to lower the salt in my life and hopefully my lonlieness. I think it was the piles of microwave dinners in my shopping cart that c-blocked my efforts with the ladies at the supermarket (it certainly wasn't my shirt or be-dazzled jeans, thank you very much). This book forced me to come up with a plan and actually buy groceries. Armed with a list, a shopping cart, and the Black Panther cologne i doused myself with before leaving the house, I went about the searching for the things needed for these easy to make recipes all the while keeping an eye out for someone to invite over for some company and maybe share my collection of precious moments figurines with. That day I got 3 phone numbers, and only 2 of them were fake. is there a microwave cooking for 2?

4-0 out of 5 stars A good cookbook for the single person
Microwave ovens are not known for cooking gourmet meals and indeed, that's not the intent of Microwave Cooking for One. As the author states in her Introduction, the book was written to help people create easy, quick meals for themselves, whether they live alone, or perhaps have a spouse who is away on a business trip.

The author begins with an overview of various equipment, noting the importance of using the specific cooking ware mentioned to insure proper cooking of the meal, how to handle various leftovers (after all, cooking for one will leave a lot of half packages of perishable ingredients), timing and how to adjust for your microwave and finally, several tips such as knowing the wattage of your oven.

Recipes provided in Microwave Cooking for One cover the full range of meals, from breakfast, soups, fish, poultry, cakes, cookies and pies. I prepared several meals and found the instructions very easy to follow, and the food quick to prepare. It did take a bit of experimentation at the beginning to figure out the cooking times for my microwave and Smith does talk about this issue at the start of the book. In fact, each recipe has a (_____) space next to the cook time so you can insert the time that works with your microwave. Once I'd prepared a couple of meals, I had the conversion times figured out and it was quite simple from that point on.

Meals for the most part were tasty, and as stated previously, easy to prepare. With a couple of meals, I doubled the serving size and the food still came out nicely. The poultry was a bit mealy as was the beef but that's the difference between preparing food with an oven versus a microwave. The book is a bit outdated with its microwave heating times and strengths, but overall, it provids a nice array of meals for the harried, hungry, single person.

Quill says: A good cookbook for the cooking challenged, rushed, person.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for a single person
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (02/10)

As a reviewer of a cookbook I'm asked to test out three recipes and, as always, it gets to be a challenge of which ones to try out.As I browsed through the book, at first I found the formatting to be a bit odd, and felt the book was jam-packed with too many recipes for me to even decide what I wanted to do.This created an issue for me, more so than what recipes to choose. However, I confronted the challenge and made a decision.

The first recipe I tried was "Buttermilk Pot Roast."I did have a small chuck roast and buttermilk available so it seemed like a winner to me.The interesting part was to put the ingredients into a one-gallon plastic bag and let it sit in the refrigerator until the next day.Change of plan on having the pot roast on that day.The wait was worthwhile because in the end the pot roast was delicious and savored.

The second recipe I tried was "Green Plantains." Frying the plantains in the microwave was an easy way to go and the end result was satisfactory.

"Rhubarb Crisp" was quick and easy to make.I am a fan of rhubarb and making a crisp is one of my favorite ways to use it.However, I do prefer to make the crisp in the oven so that the top is indeed "crisp." I doubt I will try this one again.

All in all, "Microwave Cooking for One" by Marie T. Smith is good.It certainly gives possibilities of a variety of recipes when cooking for only one person. And, of course, using a microwave saves much time for a busy person.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but needs to be updated
This book is a wealth of information, but it desperately needs an update. It was published nearly 15 years ago, when the most powerful microwave was 700 watts. Now with 1000, 1100, and even 1200 watt microwaves being thenorm, her recipes all need to be adjusted and updated. Also, there are awhole slew of new utensils- like browning dishes - that could beaddressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only microwave cookbooks you need.
Not only is this a very readable and informative cookbook but Karen Dwyer really knows what she is talking about! I find hers to be the only cookbooks i need to both learn and keep learning about microwave cookery. Thanks Karen. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
In this case, I think you're better off buying a Betty Crocker or BHG cookbook and learn basic cooking methods if you seriously want to cook. There are tons of recipes in this book, but of the few I cared to try, none of them turned out very well. The proportions seem a little off. Some of the dips are good, but other seemed watery and flavorless. The only useful recipe for everyday was the recipe for making eggs. The oatmeal turned out gross, and some of the recipes were very strange. Some of the recipes have so many steps, you might as well use pots and pans on the stove. It's not really too much of a time-saver, which was what I was looking for.I love the concept, but I find the microwave very unpredictable for cooking entire meals.I really wanted to like this book, but I hardly ever even look through it.I reach for my other more trusted cookbooks instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook
I love all the cookbooks by this author.

She writes for those of us who really love to cook but love the wonderful appliances that make life so much easier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Long Overdue...but it is good?
Why hasn't anyone really taken on the microwave for modern-day style foods? This book is a fresh take on a lost goal--great microwave cooking! Instead we use our microwaves for reheating, melting, maybe cooking frozen peas in abag. Hensperger has taken modern favorites, with elegant and refined tastes, and shortened the cooking time immensely. The Thai soup I made was well received by my family, except for one son who disliked that I added too much lime zest! It had a fresh and authentic Thai taste (better than I expected!) It definitely took longer than reheating a frozen dinner, but tasted better and was cooked very quickly in the microwave. The ingredients were a little hard to find and I wish there were some info on them including substitutes.

The book is loaded with tips and cooking times for common foods. This is a helpful guide, however, I have a microwaver with inverter technology. It cooks a little differently than others (and is fantastic-btw. see my reviews) so it would be nice if she treated that aspect in the book since mine cooks more evenly and quicker. It also can actually cook at lower levels instead of standard microwaves which, at 50% power, simply intermittently cook on high and don't cook).

Beautiful cover. Sturdy, quality hardback. Great Value. More photos would always be nice!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good mostly for sides
I liked a lot of the side dishes that this book has and feel that it would be worth it for those recipes alone. Other reviewers have already stated the lack of meats and the lack of pictures which is a negative but for the price point of this book I still think that with what it has it's a good value. I also liked several of the soup recipes and some of the deserts. I personally love peppermint bark. A lot of these recipes aren't going to save you a lot of time, but you wont have to monitor the stove when you're using the microwave, so you can nuke it and then go check on your kids really quick without having to worry about anything burning. I didn't expect the book to revolutionize my life so I wasn't dissappointed in it. I liked it and think it's worth the purchase price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starter book, but not likely to convert tradional chefs
I liked that this book introduced me to new ideas about the microwave.I honestly never thought about using it to cook fish or make rice; as far as I was concerned microwaves re-heat and that's about it.I am glad that the book at least opened my horizons, so if I'm stuck in a situation where all I have is a microwave, I can whip up something more interesting than prepackaged frozen dinners.

The book has a lot of information about microwaves in general, including their history and things to watch for when deciding what size will be best for your needs.

From the recipes I tried, I am not convinced that microwave cooking is any better - or even on the same level - as the more traditional methods of cooking.Often, the recipes didn't seem to save much time, and they were rather bland...but that's good, in a way.It keeps your options open for customizing flavor to your individual tastes.I was a little disappointed that there weren't photos for the many recipes, but a lot of them are so basic you don't really need to see how the food looks.

I think this is a great book for new chefs or students who don't have access to great kitchen facilities, but experienced cooks who enjoy traditional food preparation will not be impressed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Book!
This is a great book.I bought this book and the Easy Microwave Desserts in a mug.You don't need both books, I have found out.The recipes are the same except for two.All recipes in the "Easy Microwave Desserts in a Mug" are in this book except, Sugar Plum cake and Almond peach bread. Those two are in here and not the other, although the other book has Amaretto Peach Bread instead of the Almond. The other book has more recipes and this one is like a smaller version of the other.I love the microwave books, it makes it much easier than the ones that you bake in the oven with your mug.I didn't find as many mugs that said they could go in the oven, where as most say they can go in a microwave. This book is simple to follow and very enjoyable. If I were to purchase these books knowing what I do about the recipies included, I would only buy the other book, which has most of these recipes and more.I would buy this one if I wanted to give as a gift to a child or teenager with a mug. They would really enjoy it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great pot
I was intrigued by the story and information about this pot.It sounded and behaves somewhat like a microwave presure cooker.I've yet to explore the Japanese recipies included with the pot and the focus of the author's cookbook, but have found this little wonder is superbe for microwaving veggies: in 4 minutes a FULL pot of perfect green beans was on the table. Its easy to use, easy to clean, good for direct table serving.Everyone asked for ordering information after dinner.

3-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
When I bought this book (and the Zen cooker) what I was expecting to
get was something similar to a slow cooker for Japanese dishes which
used a microwave. That is to say, I thought each recipe would be a
complete meal, in which you would put all the ingredients in the
cooker, turn on the microwave and presto -- dinner tonight! This is
not the case. The recipes, from what I have tried, are good, but if you
want to make a complete meal from these you will have a bit of trouble
since you have to cook each section (i.e. rice, vegetables, main dish)
separately you have the trouble of keeping them all warm.

The book and the Zen Cooker are not cheap, and even though the
recipes are good, for what I bought it for -- it was not a good
purchase for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's not a cookbook, it's an instruction manual!
The description of this book did not indicate it was relating solely to a specialized, microwavable device. (There was a picture of the "missing" item on the cover, but no words.) We bought the book as a gift - but not the device - and as such the recipient was somewhat put out. He thought the book was ancillary to the device! Needless to say that we were embarassed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, Innovative, and Beautiful!
The recipes in this book are all cooked in a cute microwave pot.I have found all of the food really simple to make, with few ingredients and cooking times of only a few minutes. You can treat the recipes like tapas dishes and make a varied meal by putting a few of them together. What I love most is that veggies retain their color and nutrition, and are much more flavorful than steaming or boiling on the stove. It's also amazing to find a book and device that can cook meat and fish deliciously in the microwave!!!Lastly, and so helpful is that almost all of the recipes have beautiful full page photos. As mentioned in the Oprah write up, the Cook-Zen pot can be bought online at www.korin.com.Like the other reviewer, I am giving the books and pots as Christmas gifts, especially to my niece for cooking in her college dorm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product and recipes
I love this product and the recipes in the book are great. Saw it recommended in Oprah magazine. Have been using it for a couple of weeks and have made 6-7 meals. Meats and fish remain flavorful and juicy and broths with them are delicious. made the best rice I've ever made with it. I did have to make a trip to an Asian grocery to get some ingredients. Veggies are wonderful this way and keep all their nutritional values. Am giving a zen-cooker to my son with this book for Christmas. Would love to have more recipes if anyone knows of any. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cooking for the Inexperienced
I didn't keep the book but gave it to my 23 year old grandson who was moving into his first apartment.I'm waiting to get his reaction. Interesting to me was the format which reminded me of a child's book with its cardboard covers and pictured ingredients. He can barely use a can opener but should not be intimidated by the book's user friendly approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars A barracks-full of young soldiers liked the results
This is a great series of books! Been using them for years. As a novice cook (though not A Man), I appreciated the straightforward directions which use real-world terms and don't assume you actually know anything about cooking. I've learned more about cooking now, but still enjoy the writing style and really good, healthy, hearty stuff! One big thing which keeps bringing me back is the creative, non-traditional take on what can be made into "guy food." It goes way beyond meatloaf and sloppy joes. Chicken in coconut milk curry sauce, anyone?

I recently acquired A Man A Can A Microwave and packed it along on a trip to visit my fiancee, who is an Army private stationed at Fort Bliss (Texas) and living in a brand-spanking-new barracks with a lot of other young soldiers. I put the small-but-functional microwave in his kitchenette to good use with several of the recipes in this book, and as smells of cooking wafted through the hallways, soldier after soldier wandered in to have a bite. Lots of enthusiastic responses and taste-test approval from a whole bunch of US Cavalry Scouts -- now, that's guy-testing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is great! Its funny and my Dad loved it for fathers day. Filled with good food ideas that are quick and easy. Good book for the single man. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars for the man who say's he can't cook!
This series of books, I got them all for my no cook hubby and now he Can and has a Plan . Take the book shooping for ingrediants (with Pictures) and he has to follow the easy steps and now no excuses! It Idiot proof! What a product!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy the Original a Man a Can a Plan cookbookinstead
This sequel is cashing in on the Original A Man A Can cookbook that was surprisingly very useful for my bachelor sons.It had dozens of tasty recipes that the boys could do easily by opening several cans of easily procured and stored foods.
This one, however is just a microwave cookbook. It involves buying pounds of meat , shrimp, chicken and unprepared foods that need to be cooked properly before even assembling. This is WAY too much trouble for a bachelor when you can heat a frozen pizza in 15 minutes.
You might as well just borrow your Mom's microwave cookbook and learn to cook beef and chicken, spending an hour cooking dinner.Do you really want to do this? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great price, in great condition
I'm looking forward to finally having my own copy of this extraordinary cookbook. The copy I received was at a good price and in very good shape.I'm very pleased with the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
I just made the Rogan Josh for dinner tonight. It was outstanding.Amazing authentic tasting Indian food that is almost laughably easy to make. When I remember my Indian friends working for hours on what now takes 45 minutes, well, lets just say, these days we are eating a lot more Indian food. The caramelized rice pudding (Banrasi Kheer) is to die for.Remember that to make this the old fashioned way you had to cook it hours just below boiling to be careful not to burn the milk. Not so in a microwave! You just zap it for about 30 minutes (yes that is an insane length of time for microwave, but you need to just trust her).

The only problem is that a lot of the recipies will boil over, so plan on setting aside some time to clean up the microwave.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have cookbook for anyone who like Indian food
I received this cookbook as a gift from a friend who had served me several delicious meals from it.I had the book probably two years before I was brave enough to try using it but once I did haven't stopped. The recipes are well written, easy to follow, and delicious;they keep, store and reheat well.Julie Sahni really demystifies the spices, ingredients and cooking methods. My copy of this book is falling apart, I've used it so much.I can't praise this book highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sahni's microwave magic creates real Indian food
Don't disdain this marvelous book. Julie Sahni teaches you how to cookIndian food in the microwave, with flair and flavor. In the process, youlearn things about microwave cooking you never knew. The microwave reallycan make "real" food, and Julie Sahni shows you how. The recipesneed the quantity of spices increased in some cases, but this book is anendless delight and resource. Wonderful for summer months when you cravethe flavor of that luscious curry but want to beat the heat in the kitchen,or just for any time when speed and ease seem the way to go! I love thisbook. I own over 30 Indian cookbooks, but I return to this often.

5-0 out of 5 stars These microwave recipes really do save time and taste great!
I tried several of her recipes after watching Ms. Sahni on the Frugal Gourmet a few years ago.
The dishes I prepared were a hit with family and friends.I would especially recommend making the Indian sweets using her microwave methods. The results were quick and delicious! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars glad to find the copy
when I received my first microwave this book came with it . It has been used very much and became tattered and the cover came off. When I saw I could purchase one I was elated. It is in good shape and will last longer than I will.
