Product Description

Each year writers and editors submit over three thousand grammar and style questions to the Q&A page at The Chicago Manual of Style Online. Some are arcane, some simply hilarious—and one editor, Carol Fisher Saller, reads every single one of them. All too often she notes a classic author-editor standoff, wherein both parties refuse to compromise on the "rights" and "wrongs" of prose styling: "This author is giving me a fit." "I wish that I could just DEMAND the use of the serial comma at all times." "My author wants his preface to come at the end of the book. This just seems ridiculous to me. I mean, it’s not a post-face."

In The Subversive Copy Editor, Saller casts aside this adversarial view and suggests new strategies for keeping the peace. Emphasizing habits of carefulness, transparency, and flexibility, she shows copy editors how to build an environment of trust and cooperation. One chapter takes on the difficult author; another speaks to writers themselves. Throughout, the focus is on serving the reader, even if it means breaking "rules" along the way. Saller’s own foibles and misadventures provide ample material: "I mess up all the time," she confesses. "It’s how I know things."

Writers, Saller acknowledges, are only half the challenge, as copy editors can also make trouble for themselves. (Does any other book have an index entry that says "terrorists. See copy editors"?) The book includes helpful sections on e-mail etiquette, work-flow management, prioritizing, and organizing computer files. One chapter even addresses the special concerns of freelance editors.

Saller’s emphasis on negotiation and flexibility will surprise many copy editors who have absorbed, along with the dos and don’ts of their stylebooks, an attitude that their way is the right way. In encouraging copy editors to banish their ignorance and disorganization, insecurities and compulsions, the Chicago Q&A presents itself as a kind of alter ego to the comparatively staid Manual of Style. In The Subversive Copy Editor, Saller continues her mission with audacity and good humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun little book

This is a nice little book for editors and writers alike. It accurately discusses many of the dynamics in that relationship, and offers good advice for dealing with them. Written in a very readable, enjoyable way.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's like finding out your mother smokes!
Editors break rules. How liberating! Carol Fisher Saller's "Subversive Copy Editor" confirms what I learned as a scientist: The more you know about a subject, the less dogmatic your opinions. Rules can be broken; editors do make stupid mistakes. Saller brings great common sense and, yes, sharp business acumen to her profession. The book reminds you that if an author--consistently--has styled his 985 references in a totally nonstandard, but logical style, what's the point in undoing all the painstaking work? Having enjoyed this "Chicago Manual of Style" editor's online Q&A page for years, I loved reading more about the crazy questions she gets about editing (and sometimes other topics, like fashion, when someone mistook "The Chicago Manual of Style" for a fashion advice book) and the clearheaded, sometimes funny answer she gives. But beyond her approach to editing and her invaluable hints on how to stay organized as an editor, the book includes invaluable lessons in modern business etiquette: ways to work with difficult co-workers and authors, the importance of answering e-mail promptly, even if you don't know the answer; how to defer a decision; the importance of keeping the big picture (in this field, the big picture is the reader and book sales); rules of etiquette not only in your own e-mails but especially with how you handle others' messages; and so on. The book can be read from front to back, almost like a novel (well, I am an editor, so perhaps I found it especially compelling), and Saller's self-deprecatory humor had me laughing out loud. Editors, writers, students, and businesspeople who handle any sort of communications will enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A literary must-have
This thin, little volume will open the eyes of writers and editors alike with its simple and experiential approach to the practice of copy editing. The author shares anecdote after anecdote (her own as well as others') that demonstrate the nuance of judgment required to master the craft and build relationships with authors.

The book's structure is based on a working, day-to-day point of view; extremely practical and as much a have-at-hand reference as the encyclopedic Chicago manual. It addresses the fallibility of human nature and will appeal to readers at every level of experience. The Subversive Copy Editor should be required reading for anyone interested in becoming or living their life as an editor or writer. Buy two and give one to your most difficult client.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stet
While written for the narrow orbit of copy editors and those who might desire such a career, this book deserves a wider readership.

Authors, language mavens, newsletter writers, corporate communicators, to those who simply want general good advice on handling co-worker business interactions at any type of office--all these and more would profit from Carol Fisher Saller's advice.

Practical, good humored, well written, and nicely proofed. (The jacket design by Isaac Tobin is nicely done, as well.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Copy Editor Wannabe Who Became An Author
When I stumbled across this book, I just had to read it. Many years ago, as a college English major with a concentration in creative writing, I graduated wanting to go into the publishing field. On job interviews I was told I was perfect for the job except that my typing speed was terrible, and to come back when it was better. My typing speed is just a little better, still hunt-and-peck but it was never good enough to go back, so I never gotthe job I wanted in the publishing field. I entered the mental health field instead but I have gotten to know the publishing field as an author. I hada book published nine years ago, and a second one that is looking for a publisher. Through my experience with book #1 (When the Body Is the Target: Self-Harm, Pain, and Traumatic Attachments), and several journal papers, I certainly can empathise withthe writer who does not want to change a word or comma. Although that was never me, when my publisher edited out four entire chapters of a very large book, it hurt. It felt like giving birth to four babies and then having to give them away. It was not copy editing but nonetheless I know what it is to become very attached to ones own words. I read first and appreciated most the chapter on the difficult writer and the one meant for the writer. Now I know more about the world of the editor even though I never got to know it the way I wanted to when I graduated from college. This is a most valuable book for copy editors and writers alike, and I am grateful to Carol for writing it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Academic
If you live and die, and otherwise make your living based on that which the 'Chicago Manual of Style' has to say about copy editing, then you'll find your money is well-spent. However, for me, my money was better spent elsewhere.

As a marketing communications editor, I needed something for friendly with the journalistic world. I needed a book that considers the AP book the style-setter.

"Chicago" is a great book, and for some purposes, I use it. Not usually, but occasionally. With this in mind, "Copy-Editing : The Cambridge Handbook for Editors, Authors and Publishers" is the way to go. However, if you are ready to step up and put on some big bucks for an editing book, but need an AP-focused text, check out "Copy Editing for Professionals" instead.

I fully recommend "Copy-Editing : The Cambridge Handbook for Editors, Authors and Publishers," but only after you are sure it is what you need.

Product Description
KLAN RALLY: A Photographic Essay is a photographic art book as well as a social history textbook of the USA. It is available in both hardback and soft cover. The format is 8 and 1/2 by 11 inches in size. The photographs are printed on high quality 100 lb acid- free paper stock and the book is 64-pages in length. For nearly fifty years after they were made, the negatives for these extraordinary photographs sat forgotten and gathering dust on the back shelves in closets on both coasts of the country. Most of the 250 black and white images had never been printed or seen by anyone other than the original photographer. On the afternoon and two evenings when these pictures were taken, the Ku Klux Klan and their rivals the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan were celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Klan s birth. The Klan s membership having dwindled to practically nothing, both branches of the KKK decided to hold public recruiting rallies around the country in hopes of attracting attention and increasing their membership rolls. The two public rallies portrayed in this collection of photographs took place in southwest Ohio, near Cincinnati. The twenty-one year old photojournalist that took the photos was a student at Ohio University. Since he was studying to become a professional press photographer when he happened to notice the towering cross and billboard-sized signs advertising the public KKK Rally at the side of the Interstate Highway, he decided to attend and see if the event produced any interesting photographs that he could use for his college class assignments. The pictures were fascinating, but after using a few for his journalism classes and a couple of photography contests, the negatives were placed in a drawer and forgotten. During the following half-century, the KKK continued to decline in importance and the pictures took on a kind of historic interest that only the passage of time permits. While working on a memoir the photographer came across the dissolving Kodak boxes containing the negatives and some proof sheets. Looking at the material with a fresh viewpoint, it was obvious that the pictures had acquired a certain historical significance. After making the first set of proofs of every image in the coverage, the best 100 images were narrowed down to fit into this fascinating book-length photographic essay. Here is what went on at two different KKK Recruitment Rallies celebrating the 100th year anniversary of the founding of the movement. Come, mix with the robed Klan members, undercover and uniformed police, nearby farmers, the news media, and just plain curious folks who had seen the signs and overcame their personal fears to stop and investigate what seemed and was a surreal, out-of-this-time event. ... When Maggie Adams was fourteen years old, four of her friends drew a pentagram on the floor, lit candles made of human fat, repeated the words of an ancient spell, and raised a demon. They had no way of knowing that what they did that night could bring about the end of the world. They did not know that a supernatural force beyond their comprehension or control had waited patiently for this very moment in time. And no one had any way of knowing that a little dog, sent from God, was the only living thing that stood between them and total annihilation. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars received for LibraryThing's Early Reviewers
It's clear the author loves dogs, and it's a very sweet sentiment, to love your pets so much that you feel inspired to write a fantasy novel with a dog as a hero.

However, this is a book that should have gone through several more re-writes before being allowed to see the light of day. There were inconsistencies galore, and it got very preachy at times. Character motivation was nigh impossible to understand, despite the overabundance of description.

I felt obliged to finish the book because I got it as part of the Early Reviewers program, but I really wish I hadn't bothered to read it. It really felt like a waste of my time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intensely Creative
At first glance this book seems like an absolutely ridiculous story. However, once I began to read it really captured my attention. This book has an excellent story line that is filled with imagination and drama. It is extremely graphic so it is definately not for the faint of heart. I very quickly became attached to the characters and cheered on their victory in the end. I am definately looking forward to reading the sequel. The only negative comment I have towards this book is that there were several typo's throughout the book. I believe Pureheart is perfect for those who have a very active imagination and love the idea of the unexpected hero.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love and Courage Conquer Hell
Occasionally you find a book that shows the author's heart as much as the characters within it. The love that Rita Hsu Syers feels for the animals in her life, and the empathy and understanding she has for teens, show in this heartfelt story of the purest creature that could be found, a young dog. The young people in her story make huge mistakes, and fight their way back from them. Crippled in mind, or crippled in body, they each overcome the minions of Hell itself to save the world, which will never be as they knew it again.

This will never be seen as an ordinary book. Its portrayal of courage under overwhelming odds will stay with you. it's worth reading.

"Pureheart" is a perfect blend of the ingredients that it takes to produce a great book.Warm fuzziness, loveable characters, un-loveable characters, an interesting plot, a touch of heaven and a bit of hell create this consuming piece.Yep, it contains pure evil from the unearthly bowels of hell.I am not one who normally reads the guts and gore but now say, with the right balance it helps to make a good book great."Pureheart" by Rita Hsu Syers is nothing short of great.

A petite, regal Brazelton Boston terrier wins the coveted St. Aubyn Kennel Club's "Best in Show" trophy and proceeds on a destiny to help save the world of terrible demise.A constant voice inside this small dog's head leads her out of the spotlight of New York City to an animal shelter in the small town of Chincawee.Limping and consumed with pneumonia, nearing death, she collapses on the doorstep of the Women's Humane Society for Animals.Lucifer himself could not stop her from making the trek.Seeking love, not fame, the feisty little animal wills herself back to life, longing for the home and companionship she has never felt before.

As the voice inside the terrier's head led her to the shelter, Maeve, along with her daughter Maggie, was being led to the same shelter.Shortly after Maeve and Maggie entered the shelter they came out the door with the beautiful and happy Bronwen.Several months later Bronwen gave birth to one male and one female pup conceived through Immaculate Conception.

The tale falls into place with events proceed that were destined to happen before time began. One pup is a warrior, the other a healer. Each is faced with many challenges until the day of the Luna demonicus. As all hell breaks loose with demon raptors battling warrior angels, the puppy's work, along with a great blend of family, to save life as we know it.

All is not as we hope it would be and "Pureheart" by Rita Hsu Syers blends its own mix on good and evil. This is truly a book you will not be able to put down once you begin reading. It may be the voice, but I think it's the quality."PureHeart ends.LionHeart begins."I for one can't wait for the next installment.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Read
I saw Pureheart at a friend's house, who told me she knew the author. So I borrowed it, and am glad to say had a delightful read.

The story seems to have been born from the author's love of dogs.I love dogs too.The hero is a dog, Jack, sent by God to win in a clash between the forces of evil and good. The family has great love for their special dog, just not knowing quite how special he is.

Now, I tend to watch more TV than read, but for several thrilling nights I gladly put TV aside and returned to the book. I'd categorize this as a Stephen-King-type book, where the hero has some pretty rough conflicts with a no-holds-barred evil adversary.I'm not conversant with Christian theology, and I enjoyed the backdrop of fallen angels becoming demons and demonesses.

It's not a complicated book. The age group that I think would like this is teenage.(Harry Potter series, Stephenie Meyer's Twilight books might be other books Pureheart readers would enjoy.) The plot is well-thought out, and proceeds at a pace that draws out the suspense just the right amount.

I'd gladly read a sequel to this.

Good book for surveyors at any stage of their career.I recommend getting the spiral bound not the neat bound. My copy fell apart after five days.Maybe his publishing house should take some of his advice and not be cheap with the binding, because for $65 dollars new it better last a lot longer.

3-0 out of 5 stars for the price rather disappointing
The book is very poorly edited (was it edited?) as there are numerous typos & syntax errors, the latter making for some nonsensical sentences unfortunately. Additionally, in Chapter 6, there are multiple numeric examples the author depicts where it isn't readily apparent from the given worksheet examples where these numbers have come from, or if they were simply left off. In example, I would love to see where 'net income' & 'net / total sales' dollar amounts are coming from. If your given examples cannot be followed mathematically or even linearly by readers, why put them in?

All of this is hugely unfortunate because I think the overall message the author has behind his book is critically important for the surveying profession. It's a shame that while this book is priced at a premium, what you get can hardly said to be a premium quality read. At half the price the errors could be less grievous, but no less annoying. ... An action-filled novel that combines Biblical and scientific themes.
Traveling by sled, Japh spends the night in a infested floating forest. A scream in the night, a sudden crash and flight becomes his only option, beginning a chain of events which will change not only his life, but the entire course of history.

At every turn, evil has flooded the earth. Deceit, immorality, murder, and all leave the godly remnant as the only certainty. The earth is shaken, its very survival and the fate of humanity hang in the balance.

The author Phillip Stott takes us on a journey back to the future a few thousand years ago. The place is a world that only we can imagine and may not want too. Most everyone has forgotten God and only a few believe that God's judgment is coming.

My Thoughts:

The book is a very serious book to read and really was hard for me to understand. But as a Christian I do believe that Christ is coming back some day and taking His children home so we all need to watch and pray all the time as we do not know the time nor the hour.It is so much better to be ready when He comes.
