Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Experience the birth of the modern novel, or compare the development of language using dictionaries and grammar discourses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can one learn to dance with a book?

This is a very thorough book.

The book has 182 Pages of about 48 dances with dance floor etiquette, counting, cue sheets, oodles of pictures (mostly feet and direction of movement), dances separated starting with easy dances and moving toward more difficult dances.

And the big finish: Chapter 10 has eleven pages with charts showing for each of the dances included: Type (Couples, Line, Circle or Singles), Tempo (Beats per minute), and Songs known to be used with each dance, and performers known to be associated with the song(s) mentioned. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Playford 1st Edition
If you love 1651 English Country Dances and are interested in learning them on your own or teaching them to other people, this is THE book to have. It shows a facsimile page of Upon a Summers Day right beside the modern musical notation and modern print of the dance reconstruction. Careful attention needs to be paid to the instructions.Using the melody line helps with the reconstruction of the dances.

Another great use of the book is making your own arrangements to the melody lines included for each of the dances.

I found this a valuable resource to information I have already gathered about ECD.

The English Dancing Master: Or, Plaine and Easie Rules for the Dancing of Country Dances, With the Tune to Each Dance

4-0 out of 5 stars Right to the Source
This is it, the oldest original source for English Country dances, complete with sheet music, diagrams, and instructions.Of course, it's all public domain material available for free on the web, but it's handy to be able to carry the book around with you, and it's even small enough to hold in one hand while you're dancing.

5-0 out of 5 stars For 17th century dancers
To my fellow reader I give my heartly welcome.

John Playford is one of the most know dance teacher all times. So this book is a must to everyone who is starting or has danced historical dances. Music is no problem if you know how to play violin or recorder, because there are notes for every dance.

If you don't know how to play that isn't a problem at all. In the internet you can find freely copyable music to almost every dance.

English country dances are easy and fun to dance. And you have to use your head in these dances that is very different to modern discodancing. So buy the book, start to dance it keeps dementia away.

Happy dancing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent usable guide to 17th century dance
The English Dancing Master has been most useful to our theater company in staging authentic ancient dance. The single line of melody in standard music notation is easy for musicians to use.The dance instructions are clear and make it easy for a small group to learn the dance. The dances are beautiful, and there is a wide variety of styles and partnering. ...
