An Index to the Signatures of Deposit for the Freedman's Savings and Loan Bank, 1865-1869, for the State of Mississippi: Columbia, Natchez and Vicksburg by Nettie Nesbary, Betty Craft, Lettie Sabbs & Karen Massey. This book indexes records of the Freedman's Savings and Loan Bank, which was begun after the Civil War to provide black Union troops with a place to deposit their wages and bounties. It consists of three indices of Registers of Signatures of Depositors, one for each of the three branch offices in Mississippi: Columbia, Natchez and Vicksburg. More than 7,000 African Americans can be located within these indices. Each entry includes account number, surname, given name, place of birth, place of residence, race, and a notation as to whether more information is available in the original record. The actual Registers of Signatures of Deposit for the Freedman's Savings and Loan Bank may also include the following information: date of entry, place raised, age, complexion, name of spouse, names of children, name of father, name of mother, names of brothers and sisters, and more. The compilers of this index are members of the African American Genealogical & Historical Society of Chicago and have been researching Mississippi families for ten years. Some help for the afflicted
Like 5% of the male population, I have red-green color deficiency. I build a lot of web pages, and trying to find a pleasing color scheme that also matches the mood I'm after is a maddening process of asking my wife, "How does this look?" and having her reply, "That's purple; it doesn't go" over and over.

This book got me past all that. It is simply a collection of color combinations that work, grouped into categories like "Active", "Quiet", "Natural", etc., with sub-categories like "Art Deco" and "Earth and Sky". Besides the color swatches and samples, each color comes with its RGB components, so duplicating them on a web page becomes a snap.

I wish the book were larger physically, so as to allow for bigger swatches, but that's a minor complaint. For anyone who has trouble with color, this book is a godsend. ... Read more

A Favorite Resource Book
After 15 years of running my own graphic design business, I don't refer to books too often but this one is a great tool for those days that you are just stuck.

It is filled with a huge variety of concepts for playing with type, composition, photos, color, and basic layout. It is easy enough to look at one section or all of them.

I am also an adviser to our local Career and Technology Center for high school students learning trades. This was my recommended book as a tool for the Commercial Art program. It not only has a ton of basic information but has many lessons and hands on activities to apply techniques. It would be a terrific learning tool for anyone just starting out.

I'm already a fan of the "index" books. This is the top of the list.

Jury's still out
I ordered this book for a class. Since school began we've only had one assignment from the book so I really can't rate this book fairly from a technical point of view.I did consider using the book as a reference and the book does an workmanlike job on fleshing out some of the concepts, however, it did not fit with my concept of a resource book.In completing the assignment, the material could have been presented in an more engaging format.I am past my prime as regard being a student and perhaps this is how stuff works now-a-days.I'll reservemy opinion as neutral until I have more class time/resource check time to investigate it.Stay tuned!

Great for all designers!
I found this book to be outstanding!

Whilest most design books go into design trends, Jim Krause goes into details about design fundamentals that are essential not only for begining designers, but more advanced designers as well. Also, the book is layed out in such a way that it is not subject to time. This book will still be a good read even ten years down the road.

If you're interested in getting into design, this book is an absolute must-have.

Too small to know
This book may be fantastic, but I have no idea as the width of the book is too small to properly open the book.Why would a designer approve this book size, makes me question how good he can be.I wished I had saved my money as it is too frustrating to battle out holding the book open to read. ...
