Editorial Review

Product Description

Historically, it has been historically difficult to measure the impact of policies and programs designed to address juvenile crime. The most commonly used strategies for combating juvenile delinquency have primarily relied on intuition and fads. However, the promising research documented in Changing Lives presents methods that can directly remedy these deficiencies in our juvenile justice system.

Peter W. Greenwood demonstrates here that as crime rates have fallen, researchers have identified more connections between specific risk factors and criminal behavior. At the same time, program developers have discovered a wide array of innovative interventions. The result of all this activity, he reveals, has been the revelation of a few prevention models that reduce crime much more cost-effectively than popular approaches such as tougher sentencing, the D.A.R.E. campaign, boot camps, and "scared straight" programs.

Changing Lives expertly presents the most promising of these prevention programs, their histories, the quality of evidence to support their effectiveness, the public policy programs involved in bringing them into wider use, and the potential for investments and developmental research to increase the range and quality of programs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Well Researched
Peter Greenwood's book is primarily an academic study that exhaustively analyzes prevention programs that particularly target at-risk youth in context of the juvenile justice system. But he goes well beyond juvenile justice by exploring almost all facets of prevention programs aimed at children, including those acknowledged as genuinely evidence-based programs and their counterpart, those that wind up being ineffective and a waste of money because they haven't been subjected to rigorous evaluation. (The DARE program, "boot camps," and Scared Straight are chief among those known to have failed.)

Greenwood's analysis is both thorough and provocative, but he goes one step further than analysis by including an evaluation of the politics at play. Serious business, indeed.

This is a good addition to the library of anyone interested in criminal justice, prevention programs, research methodology, and how political will is shaped. And, although it generally is academic in nature, it's sufficiently readable for lay people who just want to know a little more about the subject. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good review of the juvenile justice field
I used this book in a Juvenile Deliquency course. It ispacked with important information, theoretical orientations, and Howell spends much time addressing the history of the field and JD in general.I found the book to work very welll for the more professional orientated students in the class. For example, I had a couple of police officers who really liked the book because it addressed some very practical issues they were facing every day. Other, less experienced, students were a little put off by the small print and the textbook format. The book is also a little repetitive, and the same topics are are addressed in different places in the book.Although it was published in 2003, many of the statistics are outdated which is a shame. I would love to see a revised and/ or a condensed edition. ... Read more
