5-0 out of 5 stars stitchionary vol 4
I have the previous 3 stitchionary books. This one is NO disappointment.I love it! definiteley recommend this series to serious knitters & crochet lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Written
I knit, I didn't know how to crochet except one simple stitch. This book explains and shows the stitches. The pictures are very clear.Indespensible for the knitter or the one who crochets.I feel confident that by using this book I can do any stitch the pattern calls for.

While I still prefer knitting, I love that now I feel confident to do some crochet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
It is wonderful to have an encyclopedia of crochet stitches. I am an experienced knitter and have been wanting to try crochet. This book is very inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous
First off, I don't understand the other reviewers dissapointment in the lack of patterns. This is a STITCH DICTIONARY, not a pattern book! No one book could possible contain every set of crochet stitches, although I believe this one does a fair job of representing the spectrum. Color photographs are large and crystal clear, instructions are easy to follow. Overall, a great addition to your personal library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eye Candy of Knitting Stitch Dictionarys
The series of Vogue Stitch Libraries are by no means intended to be as complete as Barbara Walkers or probably even the ORIGINAL Harmony guides. However, their production values are SOOOOOOO much better that I find myself going to these in order to get a better view and more inspiration than the Walker or Harmony guides. If you can only afford one set of stitch dictionaries, these probably wouldn't be it. However, if you are a stitch pattern junky like me, these are definitely a good set to add to your collection. ... Read more

Product Description
"Knitting Yarns and Spinning Tales" brings to life the unique and universal experiences of knitters from a variety of backgrounds.

This exceptional collection combines lighthearted essays with more philosophical pieces from authors and experts such as Meg Swansen, Perri Klass, Lily Chin, Teva Durham, Lela Nargi, Susan Gordon Lydon, Suzyn Jackson, Amy Singer, Greta Cunningham, Laura Billings, Kay Dorn, Betty Christiansen, and Jennifer Hansen, who put down their needles long enough to share their thoughts and musings about the popular pastime.

In these entertaining yarns, the authors provide insight into the warmth and enjoyment of knitting and crocheting. Join one writer as she shares a poignant Sunday afternoon in March shearing sheep with her father; travel to Sant ’Arsenio, Italy, where women gather on their door steps to knit, crochet, embroider, and chat; laugh at one woman’s memories of learning to knit in an uncomfortable classroom chair beside a World War II vet named Max; and smile at the essays that delve into the psyche of the knitter.

If you live to knit, enjoy the companionship of other knitters, or appreciate the intricate handiwork of a handmade sweater, this is a must-read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars knitting loves crochet review
Excellent book, excellent photos and diagrams.Lots of projects from basic to advanced.Something for everyone.Great book for knitters who want to expand their skill set and excellent book for crocheters who want to learn to knit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crochet trim
This book is simple enough for a beginner yet has advanced designs also. Good instructions easy to understand. Creative pieces.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Exciting
This book had very little information that was usedful to me.It is mainly about adding trims - either crocheted to knitted objects, or knitted to crocheted objects. There mere mitts, hats, afghans, scarves, and sweaters, but most of the projects were unexciting.Anyone who can both knit and crochet would have probably already thought of adding crocheted trim to projects they've knitted. One of the best projects is the tank top shown on the cover. The only other interesting project was a drop stitch scarf that alternated knitted sections and crocheted motifs (similar to granny squares, but nicer). The crocheted flowers that were sewn to knitted items were also uninspiring. You can get many more interesting patterns on-line for free.

5-0 out of 5 stars crochet properly done
Having been taught to crochet 30 years ago by a senior citizen, I was not sure that I was "doing" it properly, as things did not always work out properly. This book revealed that I was indeed off base on quite a few things! However did I manage to make so many things incorrectly. What a relief to learn them the correct way.Crochet has become a joy finally. There are clear pictures, good directions and nice projects. The yarn used is beautiful.I decided to make every project using the yarn suggested. What a wonderful idea this turned out to be.They are really even more beautiful than in the pictures. For once all the suggested hooks work too because I used the yarn listed. There is the wrong way and then there is the Vogue way.The Vogue way is so much better. They show the place to put the hook for every stitch, which was confusing to me because so many books, and even my teacher, had never explained this properly.I think everyone should examine this book and reevaluate their crochet style. It is amazing how much you can learn from this one little book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best basic books that I have seen
This is an admirable book on the basics of crocheting. The pictures explaining the stitches are unusually clear and the explanations are well written. There are also sections on yarns, hooks, finishing and care, as well as very useful descriptions of various accessories that are available. One cavil - the author recommends using safety pins as stitch markers. I don't like regular metal safety pins as the thread often gets caught in the spring - at least make sure that you are using non-rusting pins! Better still, there are plastic safety pins that don't have a spring.

There are patterns featuring different types of crochet: granny squares, flowers, circular.

Probably not for the experienced crocheter, but excellent for the beginner, or those of us who need a refresher from time to time.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's an okay book
Book shows you the a few of the very basic crochet stitches and then teaches you how to use the stitches in various items.I have seen better crochet books then this. ... Read more

Product Description

Designer Kristin Omdahl is one of the most innovative designers working today, and in this collection, she showcases her signature motif designs and experimental construction in 18 original patterns—five scarves, six wraps, five shawls, and two skirts—that provide new ways to think about knitting pieces that wrap, drape, or tie.

Unlike other wrap books, this collection offers ingenious ways for wrapping your knitting, whether around the neck, shoulders, or waist. The designs for these garments are just what you've been waiting for—inspirational, creative patterns that advance your skills, explore shape and silhouette, and are beautiful to wear year-round.

All of the garments incorporate interesting elements, from reversible stitch patterns and unique knitted edgings to interesting closures. Each project is knitted, but much of the aesthetic draws inspiration from the geometry, motifs, and techniques of crochet.

Some of the techniques are quite unusual and the enclosed DVD will demonstrate them in-depth before you cast on for a project.

With her passionate attention to stitch detail and one-of-a-kind motif designs, Kristin offers a wide range of projects in A Knitting Wrapsody for a variety of skill levels and time commitments. Expand your wardrobe with bold, stylish shapes and add form-flattering pieces perfect for layering.

Product Description

There's a new generation of knitters out there, turning the traditional image of granny-knitters on its head. Everyone has heard the mantra "Knitting is the new yoga" but not everyone is lucky enough to have someone to show them the ropes and get them started on their very first row. Unless they have a friend or relative to teach them how to start, often would-be knitters turn to the so-called 'beginners patterns' but these can be confusing, difficult to follow, and more often than not written in 'knit' rather than English. This book will be a tried and tested guide for people at the very beginning of their knitting lives, looking for guidance and patterns for projects that they can use to make that first all-important step to "Beyond the Scarf".

Contents include: Knitting Basics: Getting Started; Knitter's First Project: The Scarf; Workshops: Decreasing; Creating a Rib; Changing Color; Increasing; Finishing; Knitting a Flower; Cable: Making a Cable; Making a Cable Bag; Eyelets and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference material
Having purchased a previous Stackpole on rug hooking, I knew that this one would be good as well.I was not disappointed. This is one of the books on crochet that I reference the most. The dialogue is clear and concise which excellent pictures to reference the written material. The projects start out with the basics and progress to more difficult tasks.Excellent book to add to your library on crochet especially when beginning to learn how.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Crochet Book
I really loved this book.I've never been able to "get it" before, but with this book's help, I am actually able to crochet!

The instructions are excellent and don't leave anything out.The photos are clear and the illustrations are helpful. If you're new to crochet, this book will show you exactly how to do the patterns. It explains different types of yarn as well, so you don't go out and buy the wrong thing.

The projects are a nice variety; the apparel and accessories are fashionable and contemporary.Have fun trying it out!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Way to Crochet
This book has everything you need to know to begin the craft of crocheting. The instructions are extremely helpful, and the photographs and sketches tell you exactly how to proceed. No step is omitted here. There are a variety of projects; my favorite is the basketweave blanket. The "Tips", highlighted in yellow, are like having a personal instructor looking at your work. When the book is opened to the page you are working on, it lies flat because of its spiral binding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellence with one issue.
I bought this book a while ago, I instantly admired the photos and the steps laced through the book. I instantly thought, "man, this is a great book for beginners!" Then when reviewing reviews of the book, I realized something that stood out to me. Another buyer (that purchased the crochet bible) commented on how it was written in English crochet and not american. So I ran downstairs and grabbed the book. sure enough, It is written in english crochet and not american crochet.

What this means is that there is no single crochet. Well, there is but it is called double crochet in the book. a double crochet is called a treble crochet in the book. a half double is called a half treble.

So it looks like my students will have another lesson that was unplanned. The difference between english crochet and amercian crochet.

other than that, they have advice that is still the same, like changing colors, how to preform the stitches, and some embroidery stitches. I still think this is a great book to have, If you are able to get over the stitch names. but the stitches are the same :)

As for the knitting side of the book, it is perfect :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Knitting and Crochet Bible
It's a fantastic book. Easy to follow instructions and beautiful photos. I recommend to all beginner knitters. It has really been a great help to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vogue Knitting on the Go: Felted Crochet
Very colorful book, easy to read and understand directions, nice projects. The books are small and compact and travel well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource for Crocheters who Felt
I must respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer. I've found this book to be a good resource. The introductory material about how to felt crocheted items is excellent for the beginning felter. I have almost 2 years experience in this area, and even I learned a few things. True, not every project is going to be to everyone's liking, but I have found many of the techniques shown to be useful for other projects. Note: I had this book on request for seven months from the local library before I got it. There were 27 crocheters ahead of me!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the best effort.
I really adore the Vogue Knitting on the Go collection of books. The project on the cover of this one was sooo inviting, but, wow what a disappointing collection of ugliness is this. ... Read more

This book is so full of unique ideas and information, It's been on my desk since buying it two months ago.Having never knitted or even picked up a crochet hook, ever, it was amazing to me that the directions gave me the courage to jump right in doing both and now I find it more fun than ever imagined because the 'HOW TO' section along with the stitch collections are very thorough. The book goes way beyond explaining and showing the most beautiful examples of what free form is because it provides the encouragement and ideas to embellish a project with everything from ribbon embroidery to beads and beyond. It also informs the reader about the many types of yarns out there in the world so that you feel very confident in choosing the correct ones for the many projects and ideas the book lays out.It took me about two weeks to realize I didn't need to put a strangle hold on the needles or hooks and that it's okay to keep the stitches loose enough to let some air through the yarn, but every now and then I'd get an "Ah HA" moment and remember something I'd read that would allow a revisit to the page so it would make each successive piece go much easier.
If you feel you want to do something creative that has no boundaries and want to produce next seasons Christmas gifts rather than buying them already made, you won't be sorry you started with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Art Form
I love all Jenny Dowde's books. She is a true artist.People who don't like them are probably stuck in a time warp.I'm 71 years old and consider her books to be a great art form. However, I've always been a little unconventional but that's what people like about me.I'm looking forward to her next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
I love this book. Not only is it a wonderful tribute to the knit and crochet artists of the 1970's/80's era - the Retro vest honoring the style of those artists is amazing -it's full of fun design ideas for creating designs from scratch and for using expensive yarns without having to buy lots of it.I also have the author's first book, Freeform Knitting and Crochet, and this one follows on from that in a more 'geometric' way although this one also has several patterns for organic-shaped 'fragments' favored for use in freeform knit and crochet work. What I love about this author's books is that she encourages the reader to 'do their own thing' rather than slavishly follow the project patterns. With the ideas given there are endless possibilities to do just that for those of us not afraid to step outside the box.I also appreciate having instant access to the many fun motifs and geometric shapes included in the book which means I don't have to go searching through other books. Getting past the slavish need following of patterns exactly, to creating your own art work is not an easy step totake for many of us, but the author's somehow made it far easier for me to take that step, helping free me up to be more creative and the results have been well worth the effort.I really appreciate her books for having made
this all possible for me.All in all, a well thought out book full of ideas for the reader to expand on.Well worth the money for the experienced fiber artist as well as those newly exploring their own creativilty.I strongly recommend this book for those who want to explore or enhance their own creativity!
