Product Description
For many years it was believed that translational symmetry would be the fundamental property of crystal structures of natural and synthetic compounds. It is now recognised that many compounds crystallise without translational symmetry of their atomic structures. "Incommensurate Crystallography" gives a comprehensive account of the superspace theory for the description of crystal structures and symmetries of these incommensurately modulated crystals and incommensurate composite crystals. It thus provides the necessary background for quantitative analysis of incommensurate crystals by methods in Solid State Chemistry and Solid State Physics. The second half of "Incommensurate Crystallography" is devoted to crystallographic methods of structural analysis of incommensurate compounds. Thorough accounts are given of the diffraction by incommensurate crystals, the choice of parameters in structure refinements, and the use of superspace in analysing crystal structures. The presentation of methods of structure determination includes modern methods like the Maximum Entropy Method and Charge Flipping. ... Read more

Product Description
This text focuses on the practical aspects of crystal structure analysis, and provides the necessary conceptual framework for understanding and applying the technique. By choosing an approach that does not put too much emphasis on the mathematics involved, the book gives practical advice on topics such as growing crystals, solving and refining structures, and understanding and using the results. The technique described is a core experimental method in modern structural chemistry, and plays an ever more important role in the careers of graduate students, postdoctoral and academic staff in chemistry, and final-year undergraduates.
Much of the material of the first edition has been significantly updated and expanded, and some new topics have been added. The approach to several of the topics has changed, reflecting the book's new authorship, and recent developments in the subject. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Diffuse X-ray scattering is a rich (virtually untapped) source of local structural information over and above that obtained by conventional crystal structure determination (crystallography). The main aim in the book is to show how computer simulation of a model crystal provides a general method by which diffuse scattering of all kinds and from all types of materials can be interpreted and analyzed.

Part I gives a description of the experimental methods used to obtain diffuse scattering data. Part II describes a number of simple stochastic models of disorder, which allows various concepts to be established and enables simple examples to be generated to illustrate key principles. Part III describes example studies of a wide variety of real materials. These examples not only document the development of computer simulation methods for investigating and analyzing disorder problems but also to provide a resource to help future researchers to recognize the kinds of effects that can occur and to point the way to tackling new problems which are encountered. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
The author applies methods of nonlinear elasticity to investigate the defects in the crystal structure of solids such as dislocations and disclinations that characterize the plastic and strength properties of many materials. Contrary to the geometrically motivated nonlinear theory of dislocations continuously distributed over the body, nonlinear analysis of isolated dislocations and disclinations is less developed; it is given for the first time in this book, and in a form accessible to both students and researchers. The general theory of Volterra's dislocations in elastic media under large deformations is developed. A number of exact solutions are found. The nonlinear approach to investigating the isolated defects produces results that often differ qualitatively from those of the linear theory. ... Read more

Product Description
Many materials used in industry are crystals. These crystals often show anomalies, such as sudden softening or embrittlement at certain temperatures. If controlled, such behavior can be extremely useful, for manufacturing and high-technology applications. This is one of the first books to describe the recently determined physical origins of such behavior, and provides an insight into the important thermodynamic principles and microstructural properties involved. It starts with the fundamental principles of structural phase transitions in materials. Ferroelasticity, twinning and related microstructures are then described.Landau-type theories of phase transitions are introduced, together with details of elastic and specific heat anomalies, the formation of spontaneous strain, and the generation of solitary waves at temperatures close to the transition point. ... Product Description
Crystal Structure Refinement is a mixture of textbook and tutorial. As A Crystallographers Guide to SHELXL it covers advanced aspects of practical crystal structure refinement, which have not been much addressed by textbooks so far. After an introduction to SHELXL in the first chapter, a brief survey of crystal structure refinement is provided. Chapters three and higher address the various aspects of structure refinement, from the treatment of hydrogen atoms to the assignment of atom types, to disorder, to non-crystallographic symmetry and twinning. One chapter is dedicated to the refinement of macromolecular structures and two short chapters deal with structure validation (one for small molecule structures and one for macromolecules). In each of the chapters the book gives refinement examples, based on the program SHELXL, describing every problem in detail. It comes with a CD-ROM with all files necessary to reproduce the refinements. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook for advanced beginners
This book is an excellent source of information for beginners that have proceeded beyond the first steps of structure determination and even for experienced users. It is most likely not a book one would read all the way through (even though that is possible). However, it contains lots of useful examples how different problems in structure determination can be dealt with. I had been working with structure determinations for more than ten years when I bought the book and I have learnt lots from it since then. (As a crystallographer, you will encounter problems you've never seen before until your terminal breath ...). It is a very nice complement to Massa's book, which gives you the theoretical background and enables you getting started. Many people use the SHELX programs. If you are about staring using them, these two books are strongly recommended (and the manual, of course ...).

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for SHELXL, but use of the program manual could replace the book.
The book gives some examples on how to deal with some problems that might encounter while solving a structure. However, I suggest refer to the SHELXL user manual if one is just need to learn the software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Everyone.....
If your a beginner or intermediate this book is great for you.The Shelx manual is as hard to read as a normal manual tends to be.This book takes you through a lot of things step by step and is a good accompanying text to the manual. Its well worth the money and written by someone who knows what he is talking about....

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good textbook
For the beginer, it's a very good textbook with lots of examples and useful refs. However, if you are like to read the SHELXL manual, you can save your money, hehe! ... Read more
