Though she likes to use music to tell her stories, the more music she uses and the larger her audience, the more expensive the whole endeavor becomes. Contracts the network had signed with agencies that manage music royalties limit the number of times Roy's work can be aired. "When you're using (footage) or music, you have to license it from whoever owns the rights, and that can be scary," she says. "Every song that you use, even if it's like a needle drop, is going to cost a certain amount of money." Now an initiative launched in December by The Creative Commons, a nonprofit based at Stanford University, aims to lift some of the heavy legal burdens. A centerpiece of its plans is to provide creators with a set of standardized licenses online that allow them to specify how their work should be used.
