Extractions: Privacy and Legal Notice February 28, 1996 08:00 GMT PROBLEM: Reports have been received of Domain Name Service (DNS) servers being exploited, using BIND and sendmail weaknesses. PLATFORM: Systems running DNS servers; programs which access those servers (like sendmail). DAMAGE: Vulnerabilities exist in Domain Name Service (DNS) servers, allowing data to be corrupted. SOLUTION: Patches are available for several platforms. See below. VULNERABILITY Intruders have been able to exploit this vulnerability on DNS ASSESSMENT: servers. This vulnerability may potentially extend to other network services. CERT has released two advisories related to Domain Name Service vulnerabilities. One relates to vulnerabilities in the Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) program, allowing an intruder to corrupt data provided by a Domain Name Service (DNS) server. The other relates to a sendmail, which can be taken adantage of if a DNS server has been compromised (by the BIND vulnerbality or other means). Silicon Graphics Incorporated subsequently released an update to the sendmail vulnerability, which has been integrated into the CERT advisory below. ftp://info.cert.org/pub/cert_advisories/CA-96.02.README

Extractions: Optimize your Apache Server Once your web site becomes popular, you will have to start worry about another issue, how to get the most out of your server. With the traffic loads pounding it constantly, you will have to find a way to optimize it to handle the traffic a bit better. That is where this part of the tutorial comes into play. Before we begin, I must state that all of these tips will be aimed at unix servers, as Apache is not optimized for Windows at all. When looking at speed issues and Apache, we must look at the hardware/operating system, your configuration files, and how you compiled the server from the start. For those of you that want to read all of your performance options, check out http://www.apache.org/docs/misc/perf-tuning.html and http://www.apache.org/docs/misc/perf.html

Extractions: (Download QScan QScan is a mail filter for Qmail. It will scan incoming messages for viruses through the Sophos Antivirus engine, and immediately reject infected content. QScan is designed to be minimal, yet extremely fast and secure, with multiple pipes instead of traditional temporary files and privilege separation. QScan works with non-native versions of the virus scanner (ex: OpenBSD with Linux or FreeBSD emulation) . Minidentd Metalog home page Metalog is a modern replacement for syslogd and klogd. The logged messages can be dispatched according to their facility, urgency, program name and/or Perl-compatible regular expressions. Log files can be automatically rotated when they exceed a certain size or age. External shell scripts (ex: mail) can be launched when specific patterns are found. Metalog is easier to configure than syslogd and syslog-ng, accepts unlimited number of rules and has (switchable) memory bufferisation for maximal performance. PureDB PureDB home page PureDB is a portable and tiny set of libraries for creating and reading constant databases. It manages data files that contains text or binary key/data pairs of arbitrary sizes. Lookups are very fast (normally only one disk access to match a hash value), overhead is low (a database is 1028 bytes plus only 16 extra bytes per record), multiple concurrent read access are supported, and databases can be up to 4 Gb long, and they are portable accross architectures.
