U.S Place Names Show Our Diversity (Lesson Plan) US Place Names Show Our diversity. Objectives. Students will learnabout the origins of US place names. Materials. State road atlases; http://teachervision.com/lesson-plans/lesson-4981.html
Extractions: (This printable is a PDF. Click here for help with PDFs.) Procedures Present background on place names. Here is some information. The United States is a country that has been settled by people from all over the world. Some of the groups of people settled in particular parts of the country. It was only natural that they gave their settlements names of places that reminded them of the countries from which they came. Sometimes, they placed "New" at the beginning of the name, as, for example, New Prague, which reflects a Czechoslovakian origin. Sometimes, New was not included, as in Berlin, New Jersey. Some places have been given certain names because they resemble other places in the world. Cairo, Illinois, at the conjunction of the Mississippi River and the Ohio River, caused settlers to make an association with Cairo, Egypt, which is located on another great river, the Nile. In this case the use of Cairo doesn't mean that the people who settled there were Egyptians.

Extractions: Alberta British Columbia Manitoba New Brunswick Newfoundland Northwest Territories Nova Scotia Nunavut Ontario Pan-Canadian Prince Edward Island Quebec Saskatchewan Yukon Elimination of Racism/Promotion of Diversity Racism and other forms of discrimination are significant barriers to Canadas development as a country and to the well-being and learning of Canadian children and youth. Canadian reports and statistics show that discriminatory practices, beliefs and attitudes continue to hurt and hinder Canadians and limit the social cohesion of our schools, communities, regions and our nation as a whole (Corson, 2000; Dei, 1996; Solomon, 1996). More than the Classroom Formal classroom learning is only part of a necessary comprehensive approach that enables the school, parents and the community to work together to eliminate racism and promote diversity. Other elements should be present within the school and the community in order to complement formal instruction. They include: Teaching Practices Teachers should understand the characteristics of ethnic groups represented in their communities, how discrimination, diversity and equity influence student behaviour and how to use sensitive teaching and other approaches to develop and assess complex cognitive and social skills among their students.
