BJESF Lesson Plans Israel_People Page 1 The Peoples of Jerusalem Cultural diversity in Israel (Judaic Program for JerusalemDay, Israel Independence Day, or for Teaching Cultural diversity) Kaylee http://www.bjesf.org/MAIN/L/Israel/people.html
Extractions: My 5th grade Day School class studied the multicultural aspects of Jerusalem over a period of 4 weeks. In class, we read about and discussed four groups of people living in Jerusalem, i.e., Yemenites, Moroccans, Christian Arabs, and 'Modern Israelis' who had been living in Israel over several generations. Using our class textbook and enrichment materials provided by the Bureau of Jewish Education, we compared and contrasted the following elements of each cultural group; history and nature of their immigration to Israel, traditional foods in daily life and in celebrating special events, traditional clothing (again, in daily life and in special life-cycle celebrations), music of that culture, and customs and/or folklore specific to each group. For the first 2 weeks, the class studied all 4 cultures together. We then broke into 4 groups, each group further researching one of the above mentioned cultures. By contacting friends, relatives, and community leaders, and then researching via Internet and in libraries, we gathered pictures, found recipes, acquired musical tapes, and recreated the people who would represent each culture.

Extractions: Statement of teaching philosophy Learning is a life-long adventure that never ends, filled with fabulous experiences along the way. As an educator, I am just one of the numerous tour guides my students will meet on their journey, so I must make the most of their stay in my classroom. I will provide my students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills they will require along the highway of life. Each student is different in his or her own way. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to connect with each and every one of these special individuals on a level he or she can understand. In order to do so I must maintain an open mind and make my students' education important to their lives. I will find out what their interests are, connect them into my daily lessons, and show them that English is more than just the traditional canon. It is critical that students understand the diversity included in the study of English and literature. While the canon may be fundamental, contemporary and diverse authors need to be included in the classroom. By including such authors in my classroom, I will teach my students that English is very much alive and active in each of our lives. But most important of all, I will learn from my students. Children are changing everyday. It is imperative that teachers learn from these developing minds. What were effective teaching practices many years ago may not be so effective any longer. As students grow and learn, teachers must grow and learn right along with them. If a lesson fails or does not accomplish what I hope it will, I will adapt the lesson, perhaps in the middle of the lesson if necessary. Just as I am a tour guide on my students' journey through education, they are also my tour guides, my teachers.
