Product Description
Hooping generally refers to artistic movement and dancing with a hoop used as a prop or dance partner. Hoops can be made of metal, wood or plastic. Hooping combines technical moves and tricks with freestyle or technical dancing, and is typically accompanied by music. Hooping describes the activity that unites the subculture of hoop dancers who practice this art, also known as Hoopers. In contrast to the classic toy hula hoop, modern hoopers frequently rotate the hoop around parts of the body, other than the waist, including the hips, chest, neck, shoulders, thighs, knees, arms, hands, thumbs, feet and toes. All spaces both within and outside of the hoop can be freely explored. Modern hooping has taken cues from diverse art forms such as rhythmic gymnastics, hip-hop, freestyle dance, fire dance, twirling, and other dance and movement forms. Hooping is part of the greater spectrum of Flow Arts, which are playful movement arts involving skill toys that are used to evoke the exploration of dynamic, flowing, and sequential movements. This movement, and the related mind/body state, is referred to as "flow". ... Read more

Product Description
This is a dynamic collection of twenty-four social songs, dances, and flute songs. Also included are several guided listening experiences and instructions for making traditional and contemporary instruments. This collection is the culmination of years of exploration by Bryan Burton, who is of Caddo, Choctaw, and European descent. Included are pieces from the Pueblo, Lakota, Kiowa, Nanticoke, Hidatsa, Haliwa-Saponi, and Seneca people among others. Each selection was taught directly to Bryan Burton by group members. Although many authentic renditions of ancient songs are included here, the music of Native America is not frozen in some distant past remembered only by the tribal elders. Young musicians have absorbed the lessons and songs of those who came before, and are translating them into vibrant contemporary compositions. This well rounded collection blends the old with the new. From ceremonial pieces to American Indian rock, the songs presented here are heard at intertribal pow wows, cultural centers, and blasting from radios. Appropriate for use with students in grades K-12, college music education classes, ethnomusicology and Native American Studies. ... Read more

Product Description
Marsha Scarbrough finds herself divorced, middle-aged, living in Los Angeles with a downhill career in film production, and then is given a bad mammogram. After fruitless visits to doctors she hears of a Native American visionary and teacher in town doing private healings, one Joseph Rael, also known as Beautiful Painted Arrow, and goes to him for treatment. When her doctors finally schedule an ultrasound, they find.nothing. This is just the beginning of an apprenticeship with Beautiful Painted Arrow to learn more about these ancient ways of healing. Marsha endures a range of treatments including sweatlodges, marathon walking meditations, and a three-day dance-fast. In this fast-paced memoir she shares the wisdom gained from her experiential participation in Native American shamanism and illustrates the relevance of this ancient tradition to contemporary life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Medicine Dance: One Woman's Healing Journey into the World of Native American Sweatlodges, Drumming Meditations and Dance Fasts
An interesting read. Marsha is a gifted writer with a wonderful way of weaving her experiences into a contemplative story that stimulates the imagination. The sharing of her experiences about her personal healing journey is a gift to all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding healing at the heart of the Dance
Marsha guides the reader beautifully into the spirit of personal healing found at the heart of dance as medicine. Her stories of discovery repeatedly bring gold nuggets of deep inner wisdom and truth to serve as wonderful guide posts through the dance of life. Her learning's around ego, co-dependence, and perfection helps us to more effectively find inner peace and awareness. Marsha's book helped me go further into the indigenous view of dance as a path to Great Spirit, while gaining precious insights.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good stories
This is an easy read and gives you very personal insights into one woman's journey into the ways of medicine. So the book is right on with it's title and content matching. As someone who follows the works of Joseph Rael I would say if you are looking for that information then don't get your hopes up.There is scant information on Joseph in this book.If you are looking for information on Joseph and his dances then stick to his books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medicine Dance Invites and Engages The Reader
Medicine Dance Invities and Engages the Reader to picture author, Marsha Scarbrough on her healing journey. She tells her story with such clarity that I could picture the Native American sweatlodges, hear the drumming and feel a part of the dances.

It captured me as I read page after page of this beautifully told personal story written with such honesty. The book is full of personal stories about relationships and the choices made in the name of transformation.

Medicine Dance is a story of courage, risk taking and, is certainly a book of encouragement to each reader to find their own personal healing journey. It was a pleasure to read this book by Marsha Scarbrough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dance Revolution
I loved this book! Marsha Scarborough's journey to the heart of Native American spiritual healing is so human, so vivid, so damn funny, I felt I was with her every step of the way. I loved the reality of it all. Marsha seems such a clear-eyed and practical person. Her encounters with the mystical realm thus seem all the more believable as we share in her own struggle to see beyond the surface, into the deeper nature of things. Through it all, she keeps her own fine sense of the absurd - of how ludircous it is to be offering a cake to the spirit of your dead mother in your own back yard, hoping the neighbors aren't watching! To go from there to the scortching desert ritual dance of the final chapters is such an amazing journey. What a gift that she has shared that journey with us. ... Read more

Product Description

For countless generations, Native American storytellers have watched the night sky and told tales of the stars and the constellations. The stars themselves tell many tales—of children who have danced away from home, of six brothers who rescue a maiden from the fearful Rolling Skull, of the great wounded sky bear, whose blood turns the autumn leaves red, and many more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very detail and a good reading
I agree this book doesn't go into detail about the significance of the myths or the specific stars that figured into the tales, but it does give a broad representation of the kinds of tales told by the various peoples. This makes it a lighter read and make also to any researcher a good initial guide for etnoastronomy.

4-0 out of 5 stars broad overview of Native American star lore tales
"They Dance In The Sky" is divided into chapters that focus on particular regions of North America. Within each chapter are descriptions of the tribes in that region and then retellings of several of their star myths. At the end of each chapter the reader will find a listing of each tribe's constellations or important stars, and the Western equivalent, if known.

This book doesn't go into detail about the significance of the myths or the specific stars that figured into the tales, but it does give a broad representation of the kinds of tales told by the various peoples. This makes it a lighter read, and for some that's just right.
