A lesson on how easy it is to come boldly to the Throne
A bout with leukemia left me unable to read because of the drugs. A friend sent me the book and I decided to read it in spite of the fact that I had not been able to read more than a few words. Perserverance paid off and I read the book while confined to my bedroom for 2 months. I was blessed to have time to contemplate the "different type of relationship" the author had with Jesus. The author was bold, he was irreverant according to my "religious world" and yet he didn't seem to apologise for it.I found myself questioning if I had pushed into knowing Jesus as the author obviously had done.To date I have reread the book and absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to know how to search out new ways to get to know Jesus. I'm sure Jesus loves the book!

The interview we all dream of having!
George has written the interview we all dream of having. He asks the questions we all have, along with biblically sound answers. It is quite apparent that the Holy Spirit inspired George throughout this entire book! You, too, will find yourself asking questions and thoughts being evoked at a depth you may never thought you'd go. It's a quick read... or not, depending on how you ponder over the meat within not only the answers, but the questions as well. A very relevant book for such a time as this. Save your money- This book is awful.
This book is just terrible.I bought it as a reference and to so that Iwouldn't have to write down everything from dance class.But upon readingit I find almost every dance is presented in ways I have never been taughtor seen practiced in any of the clubs here in San Antonio.I think maybethe Salsa step was the same and some the rumba but all the other dancesjust look wrong.Also the dance frames shown are the type of holds I havebeen taught as wrong. ( hand on the poor girls kidney instead of higherup.)In terms of the step being taught the diagrams and descriptions arenot clear and many times they will use a term like Ball-Flat withoutdefining the term anywhere in the book.

Useful, but its success is limited by not explaining *why* things are the way they are
A few years ago I began listening to contemporary music, that is to say, classical music composed after World War II (e.g. Ligeti, Gubaidulina, Boulez, Norgard, and so forth). While I found the soundworld of these composers immediately entertaining, I was intrigued by the concepts their music is based on. I needed an introduction to music theory for the complete beginner, and Margaret Richer's TEACH YOURSELF MUSIC THEORY is one of the few options I found.

TEACH YOURSELF MUSIC THEORY begins simply enough with rhythm. Richer proceeds to reading the staff, understanding sharps and flats (with the piano keyboard as an illustration) and to knowing the various types of scales. The bulk of the book is dedicated to the ins and outs of common-practice tonality. The author does try to reach out to diverse audiences, for jazz and rock get as much attention to classical music. Sometimes classical gets the short shrift, as although some minutiae of Baroque ornamentation is abundantly treated, counterpoint (one of the unique contributions the Western traditional has offered to music) gets a mere paragraph! Still, the exercises in the basics are pretty rigorous, and the CD that accompanies the book is easy to use. Also, the emphasis is clearly on the theory behind Western music, as the author calls a number of sounds dissonant when in various indigenous musical cultures they are seen as perfectly normal.

Though Richer discusses the "what" of music theory, she doesn't discuss the "why", and I felt that that could have made it easier for some readers. Music theory has a basis in real life: a given sound is a wave made up of a fundamental and partials, and that's why the Western diatonic scale ultimately has the arrangement it does. Once I began reading descriptions of the music of the spectralist movement, composers like Grisey, Norgard, and Saariaho, I felt much more comfortable with the theory, as I know why it works the way it does. With Richer's book, however, all of the theory seems arbitrary. For example, Richer explains that timbre is the difference in sound between two instruments playing the same note, but she doesn't explain how it works, nor that the sound of an instrument can be altered through certain techniques (like strings playing harmonics or a trumpet sounded with a mute).

Now, that lack of acoustic explanation won't bother all readers, and those looking to understand popular music and jazz will probably be happy with what's here, but for readers interested in 20th century musical developments, I would recommend a few additional resources. The first is Per Norgard's article "Inside a Symphony" published in the journal Numus West in 1975. Another is a special collection of papers on the spectralist movement published by the Musical Times several years ago. And finally, Kurt Stone's Music Notation in the Twentieth Century (W.W. Norton, 1980) will show the reader those new features of contemporary music scores that Richer's book is too simple to adequately cover. ... Read more

I knew enough about dancing to be dangerous.It was time to do some serious reading up on what I wanted to do. This was my first book on dancing. A quick way to understand structure, genres and reviews using available examples.
Buckland starts with the basic of aesthetics and techniques of long take, deep focus and montage.He next tackles film structure and narration, and has an extended section on the narration of the confusing Mulholland Dr, so readers will want to watch that movie before reading that section (or while reading it). Looking at the director as artist with examples of Alfred Hitchcock, Wim Wenders, and Kathryn Bigelow. Perhaps the section on film genres was limited, with discussion only of"fallen women films", film noir, and 1950's science fiction.Readers may want to watch on the Michael Moore films (Jack and Me, or Bowling for Columbine) before reading the section on non-fiction films.Finally viewers of Spiderman 3, will appreciate 4 different reviews on the final chapter on "reception of film". My understanding of the review process is much better now, and I think my viewing of movies will be richer, and slightly different after reading this book.

How to watch movies like a pro
We all go to the movies, and some of us read the reviews in the magazines and newspapers, or watch reviews on TV. if you're like me, you've sometimes wondered why a movie you liked didn't get a good review, or more interestingly, a movie you didn't like got a rave review. What up? Why? Isn't a movie just a movie?

Well, no. Movies are a lot of things to a lot of people: a way to make a living for some, a place in out of the cold for some, art for some. Some movies we all sleep through, others keep us on the edge of our seats. Others have scenes we still remember after so many years, like the shower scene inPsycho, where Janet Leigh "gets it", at Bates Motel.

I think the answer is, the many of the people who make movies are very smart, are very well versed in literature, art, sculpture, music, history. As such, the movies they make or star in often seem to be a melding or conglomeration of "all of the above". Often, unless we're very alert, these things go over or past our head, and we don't consciously even notice them, but they sink in, and stay with us.

So what should we be looking for, and how can we recognize it? One place to start is to begin thinking like a screenwriter, or a director, or an actor. This little book is a great start on how to do that.

Some chapter headings: Film Aesthetics: Formalism and Realism; Why is the music the way it is? What emotions is it evoking in us? Why afre close-ups used? Why long shots? Why is the camera moving? What is it trying to tell us?

Film Structure: Narrative and Narration: whose perspective and point of view is the camera taking? Why? How much of the plot doe we know, as opposed to the principal characters?

Film Authorship: the Director as auteur: Which is more important: the script or how it's interpreted into voice inflections, emotions and body language? Were there phases, or periods, movies went through, and what does that mean to us today?

Film Genres: Defining the Typical Film. This is sort of like putting numbers on the backs of the players: we expect a certain "structure" in a western, that we wouldn't expect it a slapstick farce or in a WW II based spy thriller. Well, what are the basic structures?

the No-Fiction film: Five Types of Documentary. Do you feel a bit uncomfortable watching a Michael Moore documentary? WE often forget that in addition to Mr. Moore, there is a camera person, probably an audio person, most likely a director, all there but out of sight. What might that tell us about what we see on the eleven o'clock "news"?

I have a small library of books on film studies and film criticism. However, if I could only have one, this book would be it. If you go to the movies for anything other than a warm place out of the cold, or to eat popcorn in a darkened room, get this book. It will make your movie watching infinitely more interesting.
