Product Description
Colonialism may have significantly changed the history of North America, but its impact on Native Americans has been greatly misunderstood. In this book, Neal Ferris offers alternative explanations of colonial encounters that emphasize continuity as well as change affecting Native behaviors. He examines how communities from three aboriginal nations in what is now southwestern Ontario negotiated the changes that accompanied the arrival of Europeans and maintained a cultural continuity with their pasts that has been too often overlooked in conventional “master narrative” histories of contact. In reconsidering Native adaptation and resistance to colonial British rule, Ferris reviews five centuries of interaction that are usually read as a single event viewed through the lens of historical bias. He first examines patterns of traditional lifeway continuity among the Ojibwa, demonstrating their ability to maintain seasonal mobility up to the mid-nineteenth century and their adaptive response to its loss. He then looks at the experience of refugee Delawares, who settled among the Ojibwa as a missionary-sponsored community yet managed to maintain an identity distinct from missionary influences. And he shows how the archaeological history of the Six Nations Iroquois reflected patterns of negotiating emergent colonialism when they returned to the region in the 1780s, exploring how families managed tradition and the contemporary colonial world to develop innovative ways of revising and maintaining identity. The Archaeology of Native-Lived Colonialism convincingly utilizes historical archaeology to link the Native experience of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to the deeper history of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century interactions and with pre-European times. It shows how these Native communities succeeded in retaining cohesiveness through centuries of foreign influence and material innovations by maintaining ancient, adaptive social processes that both incorporated European ideas and reinforced historically understood notions of self and community. ... Product Description

Rich in images and gently told, Keeper of the Delaware Dolls is the story of a Delaware Indian woman, Lynette Perry, and the remarkable life she has led in rural Oklahoma throughout the twentieth century. As Perry reflects, hers is a life "lived to old rhythms played by a country fiddle and an Indian drum," a fluid merging of square dances and Delaware stomp dances. Through her eyes, readers are afforded a rare glimpse of how the world of the Delawares has persisted and remained meaningful into the modern era.

A recurring theme in Perry’s life has been the making and keeping of dolls, a practice joining her to her female Delaware ancestors. Her great-grandmother Wahoney (Ma Wah Taise) was a doll keeper who died at the age of 108 in 1909. Believing the Delawares’ old world to have slipped away, Wahoney asked that her dolls be buried with her. Unlike her great-grandmother, however, Perry feels that the abiding force of traditional Delaware culture has returned to her, time and again, throughout her long life. In an effort to connect to her Native past, she has revived the doll-making craft.

The nation of Lenni Lenabe is the most important nation of Muurs in the United States of America’s history. This is due to the fact that if it weren’t for us there would be no United States of America. When William Penn first arrived at our country he was given permission by the SagaMuurs to set up his government. He was not sold land he was given land to occupy. The Sagamuurs never sold land because we understood that it was not our land to give. We knew that the Earth was, and still is a gift from Great Spirit to his chosen people stewarded by a Grand Shikem. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better organization required
I am a Lenni-Lenape and of course was interested in reading the book.I was disappointed because the book contained a good deal of information, but it was not properly presented. The book was not edited. While I salute the author's knowledge, I am disappointed that there are no reference sources for the information contained in the book.A book of this type requires support, if not it merely falls into the category of speculation.I would suggest that the book be rewritten and include reference sources as support. Also better sequencing of ideas would be nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars In regard to my brothers review in LA!
I was able to understand the concept of this book and speak personally with the writer on his scope of Lennni Lenabe People. My understanding is that we are a solemn people. You may not see much activism, but activism by the people can be felt because we are able to interact one to one to spread the message of peace and love. This is the new activism of the millinneum. it is not for you to agree or disagree. This book is the written word, and for the intellectual minds that understand the meaning of origin and how this land came to be. It is like the bible. The understanding is there because the faith is there. There are no questions. Learn to be what you feel, and rather than just see what you do not know. This is a powerful book. Allow its message to reawaken our orgin and true rights of passage.

Product Description
Contrary to the fictional account of James Fenimore Cooper, the Mohegan/Mohican nation did not vanish with the death of Chief Uncas more than three hundred years ago. In the remarkable life story of one of its most beloved matriarchs--100 year-old Medicine Woman Gladys Tantaquidgeon--Medicine Trail tells of the Mohegan's survival into this century.

Blending autobiography and history, with traditional knowledge and ways of life, Medicine Trail presents a collage of events in Tantaquidgeon's life. We see her childhood spent learning Mohegan ceremonies and healing methods at the hands of her tribal grandmothers, and her Ivy League education and career in the white male-dominated field of anthropology. We also witness her travels to other Indian communities, acting as both an ambassador of her own tribe and an employee of the federal government's Bureau of Indian Affairs. Finally we see Tantaquidgeon's return to her beloved Mohegan Hill, where she cofounded America's oldest Indian-run museum, carrying on her life's commitment to good medicine and the cultural continuance and renewal of all Indian nations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tonyea's evaluation
I liked this book because it has woolly mammoths in that book. My favorite part was when the Indians had set a trap for the mammoths and the mammoths got killed. Other kids would like this book because it has saber-toothed cats in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chris's evaluation
I liked this book because the mammoths are friendly. When we read this book, I learned about how the Indians survived with the mammoths by killing them (after the mammoths' revolt). Other kids would like this book because it has awesome pictures and good illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
This book is about the Paleolithic time in what is now North America, the Great Spirit creates Yah-qua-whee (the mastodon) to help the people. But when the mastodons turn against the people, the smaller animals side with the People to defeat them. After hundreds are killed in the great battle, the "creator" sends thunderbolts into the ground, killing the mastodons. The "crane-berries" that grow in the bogs formed during the fighting are a peace offering from the creator to the people. They are also the gift Native Americans give to the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving.I found this book to be very interesting. The legend was something that I had never heard of and the way the author told the story really held my attention. The illustrations were beautiful and would be very helpful to a young reader. This would be a great book to use when doing a culture unit in the classroom. ... Product Description

The Delaware Tribe of Oklahoma is an American Indian tribe currently incorporated as part of the larger Cherokee Nation. Originally from the Hudson and Delaware River valleys, the Delawares are neither socially nor historically related to the Cherokees and were incorporated with them simply because they were forced to move to the Cherokee Nation in 1867. The Delawares never assimilated into Cherokee society and culture and today seek federal recognition as a separate tribe to protect their particular cultural and political identity. However, Delaware efforts to achieve federal recognition are complicated by the Cherokee Nation, which does not support Delaware independence as it could potentially compromise Cherokee jurisdiction.

Delaware Tribe in a Cherokee Nation is an ethnographic study of the Delaware Tribe and its struggle for federal recognition and political separation from the larger Cherokee Nation. Brice Obermeyer details the Delawares’ struggle for self-determination, revealing important insights into the process and politics of federal recognition. This perceptive ethnography of a tribe trying to assert its right to sovereignty and its independence from a larger and more powerful tribe complicates accepted notions of how the federal recognition process works and the effects it has on tribal members and tribal relations. Although many tribes exist today as constituent parts of a larger American Indian tribe, Delaware Tribe in a Cherokee Nation is the first book to study this phenomenon in Native North America.

(Height, 14.5 in.)Unami M?singhâli'kun, which was interpreted as "Living Mask," or "Living Solid Face." According to the Unamithis being was made guardian by the Creator of all the wild animals of the forest, and is sometimes seen riding about on the back of a buck, herding the deer; but he lives in a range of rocky mountains above the earth. His face is large and round, theright half being painted red, the left black, while his body is covered with long dark hair like that of a bear. Unlike most of the deities in the Lenape pantheon, he is represented bya"gravenimage, " a huge shell used by M?si ngw'.wooden mask, (Length, 16.7 painted half red and half black (fig. I); which is left in charge of some family whowill take good care of it, and burn Indian tobacco for it from time to time. With the mask is kept a coat and leggings of bearskin to represent the being's hairy body, a peculiar rattle of turtleshell (fig. 2), a stick, and a bag made of bear-skin, all used by the man selected to impersonate M?singhâli'kun at the various ceremonies when he is supposed to appear, and which will be described later. To the back of the mask is fastened the skin of the bear's head, which effectually conceals the head and neck of the impersonator (pl. n), while the bear's ears, projecting, add to the uncanny effect.Fig. 2.—Rattle of turtle-If any Lenape had a child who was weak, sickly, or disobedient, he would send word to the keeper of the mask that he wanted MÄsinghâli'kun to "attend his child." It is said that it did not take the impersonator long to frighten the weakness, sickness, or laziness out of the child, so t... ... Read more
